“Flipendo!”

A simple yet effective spell. Sometimes one needs to return to the fundamentals and the knockback jinx was one of the first spells Cassius felt comfortable casting. It was also a somewhat safe spell, at least for the caster, as it was not the most complicated. That suited the young Ravenclaw just fine as this was his first duel with his new wand and he was not quite sure what was going to happen. He had researched wands with Rougarou hair cores and most sources agreed that they were particularly brutal things, likely to cause bleeding and other nefarious side effects. As the jinx hit Bridget, he hoped the effects would not be too painful. He wanted to win, but not if it meant causing any permanent harm.

Such concern was quickly forgotten as a powerful wind jinx hit the Ravenclaw side of the duelling stage. It mightily hurt and would make his movements limited; but, most annoyingly, it messed up his hair. Cassius took pride in his appearance and he thought he had looked quite fresh today. Nothing a comb could not fix.

Every experienced duellist knew how to take a Flipendo. They were the magical equivalent of a punch, more or less, and you couldn't go down after just one, that would be pathetic and incredibly unhelpful to your teammates. Bridget wasn't used to them drawing blood, though. She blinked at the sting of it, which combined with the ever-present nerves of duelling alongside people as talented and generally cold as Dmitri and Astrea, threw the aim of her Confringo. She reached up and her fingers came away wet.

Ow. Okay. So that was the duelling equivalent of getting punched with brass knuckles, or something like that. At least she was not wearing a white shirt, and it was below her eyes so she didn't have to worry about visibility. But she was eyeing Cassius a little warily now, not scared but now aware that she had something else to look out for, something that would make this duel a little more interesting.

It was no surprise for Astrea to inaugurate the new duel with a split Ventus. A flexible duelist of inflexible demeanour, her duelling career had witnessed an incredible amount of support spellwork despite her capacity for damage. This capacity would be clear even while facing their underclassmen opponents, as Astrea’s Ventus triplicated itself upon leaving her wand, the electric buzz of her magic forking one additional time to fire three separate wind gusts towards their opponents. Of these, only the original two struck true, but this sheer expression of magical skill so early into the duel was enough to content Astrea's pride despite the thick cast of fog that settled over her.

Well-acquainted with such visual impediments, she could track only the barest silhouettes of her opponents, distinct from the recognisable figures of the allies she had been duelling alongside for so long. Isolated though she was, there was a certain spark of advantage that shone through the smoke. There was no looming finality for the Ravenclaw team. It was clear that there was no difference between stages — indeed, it was simply another duel to endure and prosper, an opportunity Astrea was sure to seize.

Bridget:
– Bridget lost 23 HP and will continue to lose 23 HP per round for 3 more rounds.

When a certain incantation was heard, Meenauh knew the chaos would erupt.

Damion and Cassius decided to throw the spells at different targets to make sure the radius from the Cracker Jinx would cover everyone. Bridget gracefully avoided both hits, so did Astrea, while standing in the fog. But fate wasn't that merciful to Dmitri, who got hit with a full blast and with a radius blast as well to the point his nose started bleeding as well. Meenauh rarely see such spell effects and it seemed Cassius knew something she did not. Dmitri would feel some general confusion for a while. Which seemed to already be there, as Dmitri did not cast any spell. Was the mumbling back? Was he having flashbacks from his previous duel?

If there'd be any mumbling, it wouldn't be heard any more, as Eun-ji cast her spell and successfully rendered him mute for quite a while. It seemed the Ravenclaws got their lessons from Dmitri's previous duel.

Bridget apart from dodging, made a very good attempt at casting, and launched Cassius' wand away. The end point was Astrea, who from the darkness, she was standing in, produced a bright ball of light effectively blinding the Ravenclaw team.

For a final duel, this one seemed to start out pretty slow.

He took a minute to ruminate and discover what this batch of Ravenclaws had up their sleeves.

And was disappointed.

Sure, for the average witch or wizard, a display of firecrackers in a backdrop of bright, blinding light would look not far from magnificent, but for Dmitri—who knew what each and every one of the spells cast just recently did in the overall state of the duel—it was not as impressive.

Hoping to turn things around and actually give the spectators what they wanted to see, the boy finally raised his wand, an incantation at the tip of his tongue.

Surprisingly, this duel seemed to be relatively slow-paced so far. Eun-ji expected a violent storm but it was more of a tug-of-war game for now. Of course, given their opponents, that could change any minute so she didn't allow herself to relax.

At last, this round her spell actually hit its target. It was a painless and fleeting solution but she did not regret her decision in the slightest considering moments later, Cassius’ wand flew out of his hand thanks to Bridget’s well-aimed Expelliarmus. Well…his wand is kinda scary. The witch thought in agreement…Which was also the last thought before a strong light blinded her. Great. That would certainly not make things easy for their team…

“Nec Divinos Crepitus!”

It was a well-cast jinx that unfortunately was evaded by a well-timed dodge. Quite frustrating. Even more frustrating was the disarming spell that sent Cassius' wand flying out of his hand. He could not even entirely blame the wind jinx that caused him to be distracted. His poor performance was entirely on him. Not what they needed in a duelling matchup that baffled the mind on how it was considered fair.

Alas, there was not much to be done but to keep on fighting.

Familiarly caught within Fumos' haze, Astrea could either fight through the impediment or turn it to their advantage. Were fog-based spells a critical element of Ravenclaw's unofficial duelling playbook, considering their underclassmen's evident imitation of their houses' best? Faced with a misguided dependence on purely logical visuality, it was clear that Slytherin's easy adaptability and cunning drew upon a different flavour of intellect.

Tracking the actions of her fellow Vipers and opponents by silhouette alone, Astrea raised her wand high above her head and drew upon her magic to conjure the equivalent of an artificial sun. The brilliant, blinding light of Lumos Maxima shone through the dark in god rays, serving not to dissipate the swirling fog but to complement it. Shielded by Ravenclaw's own strategy, Astrea was only tasked to maintain her own composure -- possibly the most characteristic role available to her.

Her bloody nose was annoying, to be sure, but she would not let it be distracting. If Cassius could deliver that kind of force with a single spell, then the logical conclusion was to remove his wand from his hands for a while. It was a classic strategy and one frequently used against her team; block the threat out of play for long enough to gain an advantage that they couldn't bridge.

Taking the idea of removing his wands from his hands literally, she aimed a disarming spell through the eruption of crackers, fighting to keep her concentration and balance while ducking away from a pair of them. She emerged unscathed and to the satisfying clatter of a wand to the floor, only worrying about Dmitri's now tied tongue and not looking directly at the mini-sun Astrea had summoned.
