12th May 2024 - Afternoon
The third and final stage of duels. This was a weekend especially thick with nerves and anticipation for the competitive of them, which had to be many of them--duelling was not a sport for the faint of heart. This was their last chance to prove themselves and their house this year, and as the afternoon set of duels on the second day, it really was the last chance. There would likely be teammates and housemates in the crowd, anxiously waiting for the outcomes of these last duels.
Bridget, for one, was glad that her duel was done. All there was left to do was ensure these duellists had a fair, safe match. To spare the duellists and the crowd from waiting any longer, she stepped up onto the platform as soon as it was time, waiting a second for the noise to quiet. "Please welcome Gryffindor and Hufflepuff to the stage!" She paused to reference her slip of paper with the matchup information. "To my left, we'll have Rose Moon, Elsa Veronica Bennett, and Kim Sato. And to my right, we'll have Lea Hirsch, Julian Pritchard, and Hades Schweighöfer."
She gave them a minute to take the stage and go through any pre-match rituals, before addressing just them. "Good luck, and remember to stay aware of the time." As none of them were first years, Bridget was quite sure they knew all the basic rules and would not be attempting to throw things at each other, or whatever else was inappropriate for a magic-based duel. From a safe distance, she gave one decisive nod. "Begin."

| ⠀ | It was Sunday, May 12th, 2024. All the previous duels had ended in failure for him, despite a most promising start during his first year. But it didn't come as much of a surprise to him at all because he still thought he was cursed in various ways. This mindset carried on into his third year and things had increasingly gotten worse since his last duel had ended in a most unfortunate manner. That loss had taken a greater toll on him because it had been against Eun-ji, one of his closer friends. Kim had also suffered alot, from that loss and his mental state at the time, that he'd gone into a coma for a few days. But now, things were much different for him. Little did he know but Kim was currently afflicted with a magical ailment he was unware of at the time. The culprit for this? Someone who had drawn closer to him over the past few years, by the name of Valentin. With his mental state already broken, Valentin's infection had caused Kim's mind to further deteriorate. The dark haired fourteen year old didn't look that great when he came to the dueling stage. He had dark bags under his eyes and looked sick but seemed able to stand at least. When Bridget called out his full real name, Kim didn't even bother to correct her about the last name. It didn't matter anymore. He didn't care about whether anyone knew who his parents were. It wasn't as if he intended on going on for much longer, so what was the point of that? Kim sniffled and reached up to wipe his nose and coughed a little. Ugh, he felt like throwing up, as his stomach made a noise. The slug inside him tried to entice him to kiss those around him but he resisted the urge, not understanding why he was feeling like this at the time. As he climbed up onto the stage, Kim took out his wand and gripped it tightly, trying to focus as much as possible on the opponents across from him. Upon seeing his fellow teammates, he simply nodded to them. Not able to really speak much. | ⠀ |

Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 4
Nicky was feeling determined. She'd lost two matches that season and she was going to fight tooth and nail for the victory in this one. She couldn't afford to lose another game and let her house down again. She was a brave little Gryffindor at heart and she was going to prove that she could be better.

A strange sense of calm was over Rose before her duel. Usually, she was at least a little nervous, with the fear that she wouldn't be able to beat the other team, and bring down her own teammates. As usual, she tied her amber hair back, this time in a long braid, just to keep the curls out of her face.
All of this felt strange. The last round, she hadn't been on the team. Earlier in the year, she had still been reeling from everything that had happened over winter break, and didn't have a lot of mental capacity for sports or friends or... really, anything more than passing her classes. She hoped that the other teammates didn't think any less of her for it, but if they did, it wasn't like she had much of a choice.
Dueling had started off as a frustration for Rose in her second year, when she first started- losing all of her duels was humiliating and embarrassing. But now, when she had started winning, or at least performing well, Rose had found the sport quite exhilarating. She was glad she didn't give it up back when she was an impressionable second year.
Rose heard her name being called, along with her two teammates and the other team.
The first she had dueled with before- Kim. He was a couple of years younger than her, but excellently capable when it came to duels- both of their duels together last year, they had won. And when time was called, both of them were left standing. She hoped the two of them could keep their streak as an unstoppable team, and with the addition of Elsa Veronica Bennett (who she was fairly sure went by Nicky, but felt it a little inappropriate to ask, since they weren't very close), Rose was feeling pretty confident. Elsa had always seemed like a happy, light of a person, and she was glad that she was with them this time. Rose hadn't had the pleasure of dueling with her before, but being a fifth year, Rose was sure her experience and determination served her well.
But something seemed... off with Kim. Though perhaps "off" was an understatement- he looked exhausted, between his eye bags and the almost unsteady movements he made. Seeing Kim like this, her confidence wavered. She thought about asking him if he was okay, but there didn't seem to be enough time before Bridget, the moderator, gave them a few last reminders. Her stomach twisted.
Her excitement about the duel had dwindled, but she pushed her concern for Kim away. He had made the decision to still participate in this duel, so he must have been up for it. "Ready?" she asked her teammates. Then, looking to the other side of the stage, she called to the Hufflepuffs, "Good luck!"
Rose focused back in. All that practice couldn't be for nothing.

Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 4
Moderating was certainly entertaining, but this was the part that Lea had been waiting for- her own chance to participate in a duel this stage. It wasn't much of a break between the two, deciding to grab a quick snack before finding her team once more to make sure everyone was doing alright and find something to do before the pre-duel anxious got to her head. Thankfully it wouldn't be much of a wait, a heavy exhale as Bridget stepped up to announce what teams were competing. The second team up but the first for her side, Lea would take those extra seconds and glance at the crowd for any familiar faces before turning to look at her allies and opponents.
All of them were at varying levels of familiarity. Elsa and Kim she competed against this year but with completely different teammates. Hades she had paired with last round. Julian was a fellow Co-Captain. It would only be Rose who had the least connection with the Hufflepuff yet as someone who had competed in the past, Lea had certainly been a witness to a few of those games. There was comfort in the knowledge, even if the girl wasn't quite sure what to do with the information except to compete, adapt, and see where this duel would lead.
The thought brought a slight smile to her lips, offering a small bow of her head to the Gryffindors before shifting back to glance at her teammates as a chestnut wand spun in her hands. "Well, end it off strong?"

There was a duel, and Hades was excited about it. Unlike the previous ones, he was in a better mood and you could see it on his face. He found out his rival team would be from Gryffindor, maybe it wouldn’t be a bad thing after all. As soon as he saw who the rivals would be, he noticed that Kim Sato was among them “Here we see faces again, Sato.” he muttered in a cheeky tone.
He also took a look at the others of Gryffindor, Rose Moon being one of them, whose person he was familiar with because he had a duel with her before. But Elsa was someone relatively new. It was going to be interesting, especially because in his team consisted of his teammates that he most habituated to be paired. He had no complaint, in fact he felt comfortable with them!
Hades glanced at the referee with a furrowed brow, as he did not like the detail being his name mentioned as last. He knew not to make a fuss, but he couldn’t help it. Sighing, he set out to do the usual duel starter procedures before he began, and looked at Lea “Let’s do the best we know.” he mused holding his wand. The duel was about to begin, and Hades wanted to win it.

Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 4
Julian had been dueling for three years now, but he'd never had quite as much success as this year. It seemed the hours of dodging and targetting practice that he'd started subjecting himself to the previous year, when he'd been made captain, had finally paid off. Twice this year, he'd stepped onto the piste and won. It was encouraging. Even if he usually was out like a light by the time that victory came.
Of course, with success came expectations and with expectations came nerves. After all, nothing guaranteed that the successes would keep coming, especially not given their current opponents. Kim, he'd faced before and knew to be formidable. He'd lasted longer than anyone should've when his teammate had frozen in their previous duel. Elsa Veronica and Rose were both older than him, which meant they were more experienced.
It was common for him to wake up quiet and subdued in the morning before a duel, but it had been a long time (perhaps since his first duel as captain) since his hands had been literally shaking with nerves as he stepped up to the piste. Still, he mustered a tight-lipped smile at his teammates as he took up his stance on the elevated platform and tightened his hold on his wand in an effort at willing the minute trembling to stop.
"Let's," he replied to Leia with a nod, before turning his gaze on the opposing team, and returning Rose's sentiment. "And to you."

As far as the first moments of a duel could go, there had been more eventful ones at Hogwarts. It wasn't for a lack of effort, all six duellists were successful in conjuring their attempts to incapacitate each other, but they were mostly faster on the dodging end. Rose and Kim would see both their spells just barely evaded by Hades, who seemed to find some gap between the double attack to emerge unscathed. Nicky's attempt to disarm Lea wasn't very far off either, though the Hufflepuff's escape wasn't quite so last-second.
Lea was focused on opening the duel with a splash, and she succeeded at dousing the duel in water. The jets of water missed both targets, but they did crash to the floor and leave a slippery sheen over Gryffindor's side of the stage. It was Julian and Hades who found the most success. The Hufflepuff captain gave Rose no chance to escape with a whip-fast Petrificus, and just as soon as her duel had started, Rose would find herself tasting the dust of the stage. It was a bit wet down there now, too, which couldn't be pleasant, but at least she was temporarily safe from spells flying at her. Hades, meanwhile, caught Kim in a torrent of wind, pushing the Gryffindor back on his heels.
So far, Hufflepuff had the upper hand, but just barely. The duel was only getting started.

Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 4
Nicky was slightly (or not) frustrated by the fact that her third duel in a row this season was starting to go haywire. She couldn't let this happen. If she lost another match, she might as well quit. With a huff, she concentrated on her wand and looked straight at her opponents, preparing for her next move. She was not going to let Hufflepuffs, of all people, walk all over her.

| ⠀ | It was the long awaited reunion with Rose, someone Kim actually got along with very well and they'd had some success together when it came to dueling too. She was also the one who had made him start to consider having a career in healing, rather than dueling. But Kim still hadn't made up his mind about this and was wavering between dueling and healing. There was also the option Bailey had presented to him in the past too. But right now, Kim wasn't thinking about any of these things, all he thought of was how to survive and if he even wanted to survive in the first place. It was obvious, right? Of course he wanted to survive. At the very least, he didn't want to get knocked out during the last duel of the season. Nothing anyone said to him made him react much though, not even his cousin's (Hades) cheeky comment towards him. Kim tried to cast Curse of the Bogies at Hades but although he ended up able to get the cast off, he started to cough at the last second, causing his aim to go sideways a little. Hades was able to easily dodge it as a result. Kim's teammates Elsa and Rose also missed with their spells. As a small comfort Lea missed her spell too but both Hades and Julian were able to make contact with theirs. Julian managed to get off a Full Body-Bind Curse on Rose and Hades targeted his cousin with a Wind Jinx. Kim started to dry heave as he was caught up in a torrent of wind, his nose running at the same time. The vortex of wind was not making him feel any better, it was actually making him feel worse since it was spinning around him. Ugh. Just his luck. What would happen if he threw up now and the torrent of wind ended up blasting his vomit all over the room and onto everyone?! Would everyone start to scream and start barfing too? Kim's head started to spin and he found it hard to focus at the moment but knew he needed to in order to get his next spell off for his team. Whatever it was going to be next. What was he going to do again? He couldn't remember... | ⠀ |
