A white haired girl stepped off the Hogwarts train, rubbing her eyes and dragging a midnight blue trunk that was frantic with bright blue butterflies fluttering around on it. EmmaLee LeDames deposited her trunk where all of the other students trunks were stacked and stared blearily, anxiously towards the castle. At no point in time had she ever wanted to come back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry less than this moment.

As students milled about the Hogsmeade train station and herded themselves towards the thestral-drawn carriages, the French girl lingered, waiting until the last possible moment to take the last possible carriage.

It wasn't so much that she didn't want to go back to the school, or that she didn't want to encounter the reason for her lingering back. Well, she didn't want to encounter him, truthfully, but it was less about him and more about the churning butterflies in her stomach. She had escaped the subject with her parents, who had given probably the worst advice about the situation, for almost all of the vacation and had been bombarded with uncomfortable questions about the subject at the funeral with her mother's family. Her family? EmmaLee physically shoved that confusing situation away from the front of her face with a sweep of her pale hand.

Stephen. What to do about Stephen Schwartz. Her parents had told her that there was nothing to be done. That she should just not worry about it and let things run their course, but how could she let things run their course when she wasn't even sure they were on the same one. What if he was broom racing while she was dueling? Those paths weren't even in the same part of the school.

EmmaLee reluctantly climbed the steps into the last carriage, which was mercifully empty. Better to have this particular crisis alone, she'd already had more advice about the situation than she could fit into her buzzing brain.

With every turn of the carriage wheel, EmmaLee felt her insides twist into a greater knot. Her aunts had told her that it didn't matter what she did, because first loves were always doomed anyway and Grandmother would be helping her find a suitable match anyway. It was best to just cut the whole relationship off at the knees because husbands were often jealous of a first love anyway. They couldn't be friends and they definitely couldn't be more than friends.

EmmaLee sighed and looked at her folded hands in her lap. Would he be there already when she got there? She wouldn't be able to see anyone arrive this year. Ilvermorny usually arrived some mid-afternoon, so he was probably in the Great Hall already, waiting for her to arrive. She'd already missed a promised meeting once in their friendship and she had vowed to never do it again if she could help it, so it wasn't like she could just skip dinner altogether and avoid him completely until she figured out how to act around him. Darn Hufflepuff loyalty and determination.

Blue eyes turned to look out the carriage window as the sparkling castle drew nearer and nearer, much too slowly and much too quickly at the same time. So much like their k--- NOPE! No thinking about that. If it didn't matter to Stephen then it shouldn't matter to her. EmmaLee waved the thoughts and memories of the last ball away from her like a buzzing fly or a mosquito out to get her.

The thoughts came anyway though. EmmaLee was fully sure at this point that she was the only one who felt this way. The only one who might want a change in their situation. Stephen certainly didn't have time to bother with her silly fancies when he was finally able to work towards his real dream. She probably played no bigger part in that plan than a friend he sent a letter to when he had the time.

EmmaLee nodded to herself. It wasn't exactly a good conclusion, but it was a conclusion nonetheless. Stephen was going to be far too busy over the next years to deal with her silly, childish feelings. It was hard enough keeping in touch with anyone across the pond, even Kiernan, Alura, and Grace. It was better to just nip this in the bud before she really lost a friend over it. Stephen was the kind of person who would feel obligated to continue their friendship to spare her feelings, no matter how awkward the exchanges would become since he didn't feel the same way. Then, as her aunts said, if he found someone else that he liked later down the road: someone at Ilvermorny most likely who he could spend real time with, their friendship would dwindle anyway.

Yes. It was best for her to just shove her own feelings in a box and act as if everything was normal. Feelings faded with time, yes? Feelings faded with time. Everything would remain just as it was. She could continue to support her friend in his pursuits and eventually they would find people better suited to them at a more opportune time and age and they would fade off into acquaintanceship as normal adults do.

As the carriage rolled to a stop, EmmaLee took a deep, resolving breath and hopped out and onto the path towards the castle doors. She was still trailing behind, but not dragging so much as she entered the Great Hall and looked around for the object of her panic and affection. Some of the students from the other schools were already there, but she could tell that it wasn't quite all of them. EmmaLee took a breath of almost relief to not find Stephen just yet, she had been blessed with a few more moments to pull together her regular cheerful demeanor, and sat down at the end of the Hufflepuff table so that he could easily find her.

Now there was just the waiting.

It was that time of the year again. Time to revisit Hogwarts for another Ball. It had crossed Stephen's mind on more than one occasion to wonder why it was, exactly, or who it was, that had determined all school Balls needed to be held at Hogwarts? Was Ilvermorny incapable of hosting such an event? Surely there was enough room on the grounds to house the other schools. He had not traipsed over every square foot of Hogwarts, but he had definitely flown over it. It didn't seem to be larger, and if it was, the difference was minimal.

In any case, it didn't matter. He'd packed up what he needed for the next two weeks. His clothes, and his masquerade costume most especially, were folded perfectly and efficiently within his enchanted satchel, befitting the obsessive neatnik he was. He was never sure where this tendency came from as his father was anything but tidy, but it was something that Stephen knew he benefited from greatly. Orderliness kept his mind uncluttered and free to think on the things he most wanted to think.

He had last written to EmmaLee about a week ago, letting her know he definitely would be attending the Ball. He really was up to his eyeballs, not only in his magical pursuits, but in his muggle world home schooling assignments on the side. He loved it, but he was tired - no denying that fact. But he was bright enough to know that he also needed a break, and the palpitating stirrings of excitement mixed with nervousness told him that EmmaLee might be the welcome break he needed.

He was pretty certain that he would not be attending summer camp this year, so if he had missed this Ball, he would not not get an opportunity to see her again until next year's Fall Ball, wherever that may be, and he chuckled. He knew where it would be. Hogwarts. Always Hogwarts. The center of the magical world's schooling apparently. But that would be a long time to go without seeing her.

Would it be too long though? Unknown.

The Ilvermorny contingent had all been made well aware of the window of time they were expected to leave Ilvermorny and arrive at Hogwarts. There was no 4 hour submarine ride this year, like there had been two years ago, when they nearly drowned half of the Durmstrang contingent as they surfaced in the Great Lake. Nope. This was just another case of utilizing the Floo Network like they had done in the Fall. Stephen knew it messed with some of his friends' equilibrium for a bit after traveling this way, but lucky for the astronaut wannabe, he was spared those miseries. He chalked it up, at least in part, to the spiral dives Miles had been working with him on during their flight practices. Anything Stephen could learn about broom maneuverability was not wasted time in his book. Plus, it was kind of cool hanging out with Miles, even if the guy was still quite reserved.

As he found himself standing outside of the designated Ilvermorny cabin, he knew it likely that EmmaLee had not arrived back to campus yet. She would be coming in on the Hogwarts Express a little later. Getting here early gave him time to calm himself, freshen up, and think about what he'd been avoiding thinking about since the Festival of Lights. He knew they liked each other. What he wasn't sure about was how much they liked each other. They were more than acquaintances? Absolutely. Friends? But of course! More than frien- - and even just skirting around the edge of that tender subject made his heart beat faster and his breath struggle to even itself out.

What the hell?

Why did this always happen and what did it mean? What did their kiss mean? Maybe she's forgotten it, but he knew better. He kissed her and then essentially never brought it up again. That bothered him as it felt like a very impolite thing to have done to her. Maybe she was feeling as confused as he was or even worse. What if she was so upset with him and his silence that polite, non-committal conversation of any sort awaited him when he met her at the Great Hall in -

Holy crap on a cracker!

Looking down at his watch, he found he needed to hurry. He'd been distracted, bobbing and flailing about in the waves of his uncertainty for so long that he'd lost complete track of time. He was to meet her at 6:00 p.m. and that gave him just 10 minutes to get up to the Great Hall. He could do it. A quick Scourgify would make him presentable once he got there, but he doubted she'd care a whit about dust on his shoes, or 2,ooo hairs out of place. Still. She was worth the thought and the effort.

Seven minutes later - seven minutes where all thought had completely receded into white noise - Stephen had made himself presentable and peeked inside the Great Hall. It took no time whatsoever to see her, sitting near the end of the Hufflepuff table, all by herself.

Hmmmmm. His stomach lurched as soon as he saw her. Whether from excitement or from nerves was not clear to him. But a smile did take up residence on his lips, and that he'd not had to think about.

He walked towards her and tried to bury the thought as to whether the sweet Hufflepuff he knew was actually caging a fierce Gryffindor lion about to rip into him. He would not blame her one bit if she did.

As he arrived at the end of the table, Stephen simply stood by her side instead of immediately sitting down across from her or next to her. That would be too bold and intimate a move probably. Surely a hug, even if a lion was to be released, would be in order first?

Here's hoping.

"Hi, EmmaLee. It's so wonderful to see you," and his smile lit up even more as she turned her blue, starfire-colored eyes upon him while his arms opened up to greet her.

Instead of pulling on her cheerful demeanor or even doing the smart thing and turning to watch the door for Stephen's inevitable arrival, EmmaLee took to staring at her empty golden plate and completely zoning out. 100 percent out of it, she stared with a mind so full of panic that it was completely empty except for 'here I sit with a plate in front of me'.

A shadow crossed into her peripheral vision and she registered this approach without really taking it in until the shadow spoke her name and she jutted in her seat in pure shock at the disturbance of her quiet not-contemplation. With a genuine yelp of surprise and then a small giggle at her foolishness, she turned to the object of her distraction and panic and affection.

Like she could encounter a Stephen Schwartz with his arms wide open and that great smile on his lips and not return either gesture. EmmaLee smiled widely and hopped up off the bench and into his arms, hugging him around the waist as she said, "'Ello, Stephen. It is wonderful to see you as well."

And it was, now that he was here and there was less worrying to think about. They could have a wonderful dinner as just friends and everything would be perfectly alright. Her aunts made it sound so easy to just toss feelings aside and continue on as if nothing was changed between them. It would be fine.

The decision to greet him in this fully physical manner though had been completely spontaneous and EmmaLee regretted it instantly as Stephen wrapped her in his arms in return and their bodies were pressed together. Things were not fine. What was once a comforting gesture, a friendly and affectionate hello, was now humiliating fire everywhere his body touched hers. Her fragile, betraying face against his lean chest, the underside of his strong jaw resting on top of her brainless head, her arms around his waist, his toned, athletic arms around her shoulder blades.

EmmaLee pulled herself out of the gesture rather quicker than normal, taking great care not to push him away in the process but definitely separating his body from hers. She looked up at him, smile still on as best as she could muster with her heart about to break out of her chest and her lungs about to collapse inwards, and gestured to the seat across from her. She lightly touched the still burning bridge of her nose as she turned from him momentarily and sat down. Apparently, the less they touched the better. Where had any of those thoughts come from? The apples of her pale cheeks were burning as well. So much for hiding anything.

"Did you 'ave a good trip 'ere?" She asked mechanically as Stephen sat down and EmmaLee quickly placed her hands in her lap as to not cause concern. She could do nothing about her burning cheeks, so elected to ignore them and hope that he thought her cheeks were rosier because of her excitement at seeing him.

That said, what a stupid, boring question EmmaLee inwardly chided herself. She should have asked about his studies or his spring holiday. Anything but small talk about his trip. Ugh. Well, it was already out there. Maybe she could get through the rest of this conversation and say something slightly intelligent to make up for it.

Relief washed over him quickly as she smiled brightly and hurriedly stood to hug him. Things were fantastic for about three short seconds before he felt her tense up and pull out of the embrace. She looked up at him and though a smile was still there, it was a very different kind of smile. In fact, everything about her demeanor was suddenly different. Her face had definitely reddened, and she made quick business of asserting her preference for where he was to sit, and it was definitely not next to her. He was paying no attention whatsoever to how that decision made him feel other than he was relieved it was a decision he didn't have to make.

As he eagerly took his place across from her, she asked if he'd had a good trip. He smiled easily and nodded his head. "I did actually. It was quite quick. We were instructed to use the Floo Network like we did for last season's Fall Ball. It's amazing to me how I had so much farther to travel today than you and was able to do it in far less time. I've been at Hogwarts for a couple of hours already. And you? How was your trip? You look," and he started to say 'beautiful' but alarm bells went off in his brain and he stumbled for only a fraction of a second before substituting in "... hale and hearty."

Hale and hearty?

HALE and HEARTY??? Really? Hearing the words trip off his tongue made it sound as if he was describing some ancient longshoreman or something. Cripes. Definitely should've stuck with beautiful. Always go with your first instinct, Schwartz. You know this.

Ever the optimist, his wellspring of hope fountained up the comforting thought that perhaps EmmaLee hadn't noticed his stumbling gaffes, so he quickly tried to cover that disaster with what was possibly another. "You know, you look like your dueling training has really been paying off," he grinned winningly. "That or you've been eating your spinach."

As soon as those last sparkling gems were delivered to her, he felt a sudden surge of panic rising up. This was a feeling he was not at all used to and did not know what it was. They stared at each other blankly for but a few moments in silence before he made his plea.

"Maybe I should let you speak for a minute. If I continue, I fear it's just a matter of time before my oddly out of place nautical references devolve into mentions of Popeye the Sailor Man." And at that, he closed his eyes, cocked his head a bit to the side, and began to rub his eyebrow with his index and third finger.

A brief silence remained between them and when he opened his eyes, he knew what he wanted to say, but he didn't. He instead asked, "Belated Happy Birthday, EmmaLee. How does it feel to be a teenager? Did you have a grand celebration?"

And while he was actually vocalizing those questions, he was silently repeating to her inside his head "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry."

Sometimes, the loveliest thing about Stephen was that he talked so much. Which in this particular moment meant that EmmaLee could say so much less and not worry about messing anything up further. Though she was surely doomed at this point.

She smiled vapidly at him as he explained his trip over via floo system. As he spoke, it admittedly came to her mind to wonder why did they still use the train to get to Hogwarts anyway. Was it just for tradition, or maybe for the non-magique parents' sake? That was the most probable, but the more and more EmmaLee thought about it in that moment, the more she thought that it really was more practical for everyone to just apparate places. The wizarding families at least could just apparate to Hogsmeade, depending on how many children they had, and children could get to school much sooner and not have an entire train ride to anticipate and worry about the events to come once they got to the school. It would also free up the train seating quite a bit. EmmaLee wondered mildly if the school would have a problem with her just turning up in Hogsmeade and taking a carriage up to the school with all the other students. Then she wouldn't have to waste a day's train ride staring out the window with her own thoughts every time. EmmaLee's pondering was brought back to focus as Stephen asked about her own trip.

"My trip was... um... alright." She said, trying to find a word that wasn't a lie, but also didn't reveal how utterly nerve wracking the whole last two weeks in general had been. She'd had a few reprieves from thinking about Stephen by keeping herself as busy as possible, but over the seven days she was in France for the funeral, her love life and what she should do about it was almost the only thing her aunts and cousins wanted to talk about. All of them had different opinions that ultimately all had the same conclusion: get him out of your life as quickly as possible and move on.

EmmaLee stifled a giggle by putting her knuckle to her lips as Stephen stumbled over his description of her and came up with "hale and hearty." He was probably tripping over his own polite fib, as she certainly couldn't be looking any kind of attractive after a stressful train ride and the purposeful nap she had taken to avoid stressing about their arrival any more. "You look healthy as well, Stephen." She said leaning into the theme of his own compliment.

As he continued to speak and fluster, EmmaLee stared at his face without taking a lot of his words in. His own cheeks were becoming slightly red under the tan of his skin as he spoke. EmmaLee always found it rather cute to see him flustered. It was one of the more endearing things about him aside from his general friendliness and excitability. He always seemed so easily put together and very 'man with a plan', so it was just cute to see him falter just a little.

She also enjoyed the spark in his starry blue eyes when he was talking about space or science or broom racing and the way he'd sweep his bangs off his forehead sometimes absentmindedly when he was talking, only to put his hand back down and let the bangs fall exactly where they were before, no messier or neater for the movement. Did the corner of his mouth always twitch up like that whenever he looked back at her, or was she making it up for some minor hint that he might feel the same way she did?

Before she got too lost in analyzing his mouth, Stephen once again brought her back to focus by telling her happy birthday and asking how it went. So far, being a teenager was seven kinds of dreadful. If she could reel back three weeks ago and not come home for the holiday it would probably be peachy. But she didn't want to bring down an already awkward encounter by complaining that she didn't want to grow up any more. So instead she said, "Thank you," in a very mechanically polite way with a mechanical smile of gratitude. "I wouldn't call it grand but it was definitely... full." She said, looking for a polite way to describe her time away from Hogwarts. She tried to think of something, anything to talk about aside from herself or her family or her confusing feelings about everything going on right now. She couldn't tell if her brain was too full or too empty to be attempting conversation with him, but she figured that she should come up with something to say before the silence really stretched on too long.

"'Ow are your studies going?" She asked, finally latching onto the topic properly like a lifeboat. Maybe she could get Stephen talking about something he was excited about for a good, long while. The more he talked the less she had to think of to say. This felt like a good strategy at the moment until the Headmaster welcomed everyone back and began the feast, where EmmaLee could continue to avoid talking by stuffing her face.

Hmmmm or not, as the butterflies had returned to her stomach full force at the thought of anything to do with Stephen's mouth. Suddenly, she was less hungry now than she had been in her whole life, even though she had only had breakfast at her mother's absolute insistence this morning. Also, Chlo had seen EmmaLee pushing around her food and not eating anything on her plate and had so refused to eat her own breakfast until her older sister put some food in her mouth. So, EmmaLee had force fed herself an egg and half a bowl of strawberry yogurt to get Chlo to eat.

"I really can't express 'ow excited I am for you." She said with genuine brightness. Stephen being successful in talking his father into letting him pursue an astronaut carrier after all was some of the best news she had received in the past few months, and although it meant she and Stephen would have less time together now, they had all their lives to be friends......... right?

The strain here was real. And obvious. And it was on both sides of the equation. The question was whether to address it or not. The answer to that question was yes and no. Yes, it needed to be addressed. No, it did not need to be addressed here, in this noisy, crowded Great Hall, at this time.

He felt a bit of a coward for not asking her to go for a walk where they could be alone to talk, but he knew she had been on a train for many, many hours. That had to be exhausting, and she did look tired. Beautiful his mind screamed at him at the omission, but still tired. That gave him an out to bestow permission upon himself for more delay. But Stephen was coming to an end of running from whatever this was. Where once easiness with one another had been the mainstay of their relationship, now it was guarded and relegated to polite, mostly clipped answers. It was not sustainable.

Something about his asking her about her birthday seemed to have made it worse. She got his full attention when she struggled to find the word to describe it. There was something more there, that was for sure, and a glimmer of something sparked in his soul that gave him hope this was not all due to him and that kiss so many months ago.

He could feel his eyes squinting a bit as he listened to every word EmmaLee uttered in those short moments, scrutinizing her soft, delicate features before she obviously decided to volley the ball back to his court.

"My secondary studies are going well. I'm currently working on a robotics problem for a competition this summer that has me stymied right now, but it is completely fascinating." He paused for a moment and looked down at the table before continuing, his voice softening with a tinge of wonder. "I never thought my dad would be so accommodating on my pursuits on these subjects, but he really pulled through for me in a way I didn't expect him to," and then he cleared his throat and looked back up at her, offering an uncertain smile.

"EmmaLee, I heard a rumor when I was here last fall that there's a room on one of the upper floors that has a hidden door, appearing to allow entrance within only if one is in need of something. I find I'm very much in need of something and would like it very much if you'd accompany me to said room, if you have the time and the desire to do so, that is? I was thinking maybe 7 p.m., day after tomorrow. Would you care to join me?"

His gaze remained steady, intensifying with each nanosecod as he awaited her answer. "If that time and date doesn't work, I'm happy to have you choose a convenient time for you, any day but tomorrow. I have a meeting tomorrow evening."

He didn't really. That was a white lie. His meeting was simply the time he needed to make some proper arrangements.

As Stephen started talking about his project, EmmaLee only heard enough of his words to ask him a question in order to keep him talking. A robotics competition this summer? Did that mean he would be missing summer camp in order to work on it? Or was it after camp? He usually did the summer broom racing, so would he have to forgo his spot to someone else? That would be a bummer.

EmmaLee smiled to match Stephen's as he talked about his father supporting his goals and further study. It filled her heart in a warm and fuzzy way that he could now talk about his father with a smile, as opposed to the angry frown he displayed that stary night in the astronomy tower when she had ignorantly asked about him. It seemed that their relationship was improving, at least this much.

"What's the goal of the project?" She asked, leaning forward with interest with her elbows on the table and her chin in her right hand. As much as she tried to listen to the answer, she would probably forget it by the end of the night as her mind wandered to how long it was taking for the feast to start, or, how long it felt like it was taking.

While usually every moment with Stephen felt like an hour and a second at the same time, this hour long moment was suddenly agonizing. Maybe in a few days, by the time of the ball, she could go back to enjoying his company, and, well, she was enjoying his company, but she was also becoming exhausted by thinking too much about what she should say and how she should move and how close she should be and how she should not think about how generally expressive he was, she could just watch him talk for the rest of her life and why she couldn't just go back to her dorm and fall asleep and not think at all any more.

Just as her thoughts were rising to a panic, Stephen brought her back down to Earth and halted her thoughts by speaking her name and asking if she would join him the day after next. Oh. He was talking about the room of requirement. She had heard about the room as well, but hadn't quite had a solid enough reason to go explore it yet. She raised a curious, white eyebrow as she answered. "Oh. Yes, I've 'eard about that room, too. It's supposed to be on the seventh floor." She said, her nervousness momentarily eased at the idea of another adventure with Stephen. "I can meet you the night after next." She said with a nod and a smile.

As she thought about his returning smile, the nervousness returned with a slamming force to her stomach. If this is what love feels like all the time, maybe the LeDames women are right and she doesn't want it after all. "Um. On that note," She said, trying to put on a good show of a weary, but unbothered smile. "I 'ad a rather large lunch on the train and am extremely tired. I think I'm going to go on to bed if you don't mind." She said, going ahead and standing up in order to leave. As much as she really did want to have a normal conversation with Stephen and be very interested in everything he had to say, she couldn't stand the rollercoaster in her heart and her stomach any more. She would get a grip and be normal later.
