Potions class - April 12 2024
Interacting with @Rebecca Lark

Great, it's my first year at Hogwarts, I still haven't made many friends, a total of one. Now I'm being put with another potions classmate, not to mention that I still struggle to even get around this maze of a school. I just hope I don't drag them down. I'll do what I can to seem useful while I try to not get in their way. Tommy thought to himself as he pattered down the hall following the instructions a Slytherin peer had given him on how to get to Potions class.

Tommy entered the classroom with his head down, avoiding students by noting where feet were. When he found a table with only one set of legs, he filled the empty position next to it. Maybe he should have asked permission, but he was too nervous to think ahead at that point. His head was buzzing with all the possible things that could go wrong in class. He had never had a partner in a class activity before and if it was going to be anything like his experiences with the neighbourhood kids, Tommy would not enjoy it, at all.

"H-h-h-ell---oh my name is Tommy Patterson" Tommy said with his eyes closed, turning to face his potions partner. "I'll start by ensuring all our instruments are clean as to prevent any cross-contamination between any ingredients that should not be used in the potion."

Tommy then opened his eyes and was puzzled when he did not see a potions partner. He then looked slightly down and realized she was just short. Tommy breathed a sigh of relief at his partner. At least physically, was much less intimidating than he had expected. He realized he may be the intimidating one given his unfriendly looking face and in an attempt to become friends with the girl; he said "My mother always told me it was customary to break the ice with three facts about oneself when meeting a peer in a professional setting. My three facts are: 1) I want to become a world renown chaser 2) I am terribly ungifted with magic but I won't that stop me I always try my hardest even if I am bad at things and 3) I have been a seer since I was but a babe, naturally seeing the future has its downs but I have foreseen us getting an 'O' in today's class so let's make this yet another correction for I, Tommy Patterson". The last one wasn't exactly the truth, but he had received an 'O" in all the classes he had managed to complete since transferring to Hogwarts and he felt maybe this would instill some confidence in the girl's incompetent partner (Tommy). Perhaps one of her special facts would spark something in Tommy that he could ask for her mentorship in?

"Sorry I have been talking so much, who are you if I may ask and what are your three fun facts?" Tommy's face flushed red, he had a nasty hobby of monologuing too much when meeting someone new but he just could not stop his mouthing from yapping, Sometimes his older brother would refuse to call him Tommy and only refer to him as Yappy, anything to get under Tommy's skin.

𝓦hy are we put here on Earth? Just to suffer? Every morning, Monday through Friday, Bex was forced to pull her bleary, miserable little lump of a body out of the warm haven of her bed and make her way to class, crawling and weeping her pitiful way through the corridors. While this of course wasn't true in the literal sense, early mornings tended to make her especially dramatic, one of the many reasons it was probably for the best that all of her friends were outside of her year; her year-mates, doomed by the narrative into having classes with her, received the dubious daily pleasure of experiencing her at her worst.

A simple solution, of course, would be for Bex to just go to bed earlier, but the stress and anxiety that was eating at her during the day had a nasty habit of following her up into the Ravenclaw dorms at night. So she'd continue on with her 2:00 bed time, thank you.

She's half asleep, struggling to stay awake as she sets out her equipment and supplies, so she doesn't notice the Slytherin boy at first when he slides into the seat next to her. It's only once he introduces himself, as Tommy Patterson, apparently, that's she's finally clued into the facts that 1. he is alive and 2. he is using said life to be very loud, directly next to her. No one should be allowed to be that loud this early. "Uh, hullo, I'm Bex. Would you mind being qu-"

The other boy barreled on, though, eyes shut tight as if the sight of her was just too much for him to bear - which, like, rude - and Bex struggled to get the tired gears in her brain whirring enough to keep track of what on Earth the boy was talking about. "Why would you clean my instruments?"

The dark-haired boy finally opened his eyes only to stare past her, and Bex was growing more than a little annoyed with the boy. He had started the conversation with her. "My eyes are down here." The nerve of some people.

Her trigger-happy temper stuttered to a stop, though, as the boy introduced himself to her with three fun introductory facts about himself. Huh. What were her fun facts?

"Oh, um. Number one, I'm a beater, on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. I'm just second string, though. Number two, uh, I have a ferret? Her name is Crumb. Well, her name is Pleione, but I call her Crumb. I'm not sure if she'll live to see her first birthday. And number three, I can do a double flip on the trampoline."

She managed to make it through all of that while only yawning twice, which was very impressive.

It was only after she was done with her own facts that she actually took the time to process the Slytherin boy's. "What's a seer?" Then, after another moment of thought, she added, "Also, I think we're supposed to be making potions right now."

Tommy used all his might to now yawn back at the small girl who he thought to be his potions partner. "It's a pleasure to meet you Bex!" he stated, despite being stuck on her first fun fact. She was a beater for the Ravenclaw quidditch team. Maybe only second string but a beater none the less.

Tommy's gut sank, imagined all the violent things this tiny girl was capable of. Could she snap him in two? Could she somehow rip off both his arms with ease? Tommy had convinced himself he was on thin ice and that this was actually the worse case scenario for a table partner. He would have to handle this situation and the other student delicately, as he was convinced any wrong move would result in his immediate, painful, and swift death. Tommy slowly turned a ghostly white as the colour drained his skin tone. Even if this was not unrealistic.

Her two other facts had completely slipped through the cracks in the conversation as Tommy was paralyzed by fear. Tommy, trying to regain composure and re-focus on the conversation, took note that the girl had asked him a question.

"A Seer, good question. It seems most people already know since I haven't been asked by anyone else since coming to Hogwarts, but my mother told me it is someone gifted who has visions of the future. It's more of a curse if you ask me. " This was by all accounts a muddied truth. Tommy's mother had in fact told him it was a gift to see into the future and that often seers hate their so-called gift, but they were all foolish as the good outweighed the evil. Tommy, however, only lied about his visions, so he could not personally say if it was a curse or a blessing.

"But yes, p-p-potions, what is the name of today's potion again? I am sorry I hope to not burden you. Today is a partners' class, right?" Tommy asked. The truth was, Tommy, at this point, did not fully understand the subject and thought that all potions classes were meant to be a group activity done by those at the table. He had not realized that sometimes two students will share a desk but work on their own potions individually.

Tommy reiterated himself from earlier, "I'll begin cleaning our instruments to insure there will be no cross contamination. You can organize our ingredients and the list of steps for the potion. I will prepare the ingredients as you tell me and provide you them." . The truth was, Tommy had no idea what potion they were making, the ingredients in the potion, or how to prepare him but he thought his best chance of passing the class would be to rely on his partner that may, fingers crossed, have a better understanding of the subject.

Despite Tommy's naturally unfriendly look, he gave his most charismatic smile he could muster (it was unnatural and extremely unconvincing". Although he lacked a traditional definition of charisma, Tommy thought that maybe he could become endearing in his own way. Worse case scernario, he could always start lying to the girl... actually, he had already started lying.

"𝓤h, likewise?" She wasn't sure whether or not it was a pleasure to meet this boy, but she did want to know what a seer was, so she'd refrain from saying any of these thoughts to his face.

"Seeing the future? Like a psychic? Why's that a curse, d'you see bad stuff?" She personally though seeing the future would be cool, imagine how good at Quidditch it would make you if you knew where the snitch would be. Maybe it wouldn't be the most sportsmanlike to put the other team at such a clear disadvantage as that, but as she'd spent the last year being taught the tricks of the trade by Ravenclaw Quidditch's upper years, a group notorious for incorporating cheating into their tactics, she didn't feel particularly disinclined towards that sentiment. While cheating outside of the sanctity of a Quidditch match was liable to get her worked up into a right lather, she'd developed a rather large and convenient blindspot when it came to her favorite sport.

The realization hit her, though, that if she would immediately think to use a talent like that for Quidditch, then there was nothing stopping Tommy from doing the same. "Wait, what house are you in? Are you going to sign up for Quidditch? Legally, you have to tell me, immediately."

At Tommy's question regarding what potion they were making today, Bex frowned, staring at him in bewilderment. "We're brewing Muffling Draught today, the professor wrote it on the board." She gestured in front of them for emphasis. Shouldn't he know that, as a psychic? Maybe his powers only showed him cool stuff, like dragon attacks or murders.

"Huh, I don't think it's partners today. Wait, did the professor say that it was?" Admittedly her tired brain didn't make for the most efficient focus, so directions not written on the board or in their textbooks were hit or miss today.

Perhaps it must be a partners potion, because the seer boy started setting up and issuing orders. This rankled her a bit, as she didn't much enjoy being told what to do by strangers, certainly not strangers who didn't even know what potion they were making, but cleaning her equipment was by far her least favorite part of the process. As such, the petty, temperamental part of her that would very much like to tell Tommy exactly what she thought of him bossing her around, perhaps with her fists, warred with the part of her that really liked the idea of someone else doing the cleaning for her. Ultimately self-interest won by a hair.

She was still maybe sixty-five percent sure today's potion wasn't a partners project, but Tommy seemed really sure, even if he was being proper rude about it. "Fine. I'll get the ingredients ready for you, and read you the steps. Not because you told me to, though. Just because you didn't know what potion we were making, so I should probably do the important parts." She intended to inspect the ingredients very thoroughly after the boy prepared them, though.

After a few minutes of preparing everything, she peeked over at him and asked, "Can... can you see my future?"

Tommy was pleased. The conversation seemed to be going well for the most part, and his partner seemed to be kind. Tommy had to come up with a convincing lie as to why being a seer was a curse. What would do? What would do? He thought to himself for a moment, what is the most common sense thing that would be annoying....

"Imagine being able to see the future. You see someone get hurt or something bad happen, but is there even a point in telling them? Can you alter fate? Will you telling them prevent it from happening? Will it make it happen? These are the thoughts I deal with every time I get a vision." Tommy tried to peer off in the distance, trying to look deep in thought. To help with this he pondered on what he would have for his next meal. When would it be? How hungry was he now? Any distracting thought that would take up some level of brain power.

After some time of his dramatics, Tommy spoke to the Ravenclaw girl again. "I am in Slytherin, as far as quidditch goes. Yes, I hope to become a renown player for my house. Do you play quidditch as well? Currently, I have the utmost ambitions to become a chaser." Tommy enjoyed the moments in conversation in which he could be honest. He didn't enjoy lying per se, but it helped him build a reputation and he swore it was only for purposes that he deemed as good... or somehow convinced himself it was for the greater good.

"Muffling Draught, Muffling Draught," Tommy muttered as he flipped through his text book trying to find the page. Upon finding it, he began to read the effect of the potion. It inhibits the inhaler from speaking... was this the potion they were actually making, or was she politely telling him to shut up? Just when Tommy thought things were going well, he seemed to mess it up again. Rather than aggravate the girl, he began to clean the instruments in silence until she spoke again.

"Your future?" Tommy took this as an indication that he had peaked the girl's interest. He thought back to his conversation with her. She kept mentioning quidditch... Maybe she wanted to a career in the sport? "Hmm, I can't exactly force a vision but pass me your palm and maybe I can read it for some signs of the future." Tommy knew this wasn't exactly how seers worked, but he thought if she was willing to go along with this, he would have a chance to say some positive things about her. Maybe him saying these things would stir a fire in the girl, inspiring her to pursue her goals even more. Tommy held out his right hand, palm facing the ceiling, waiting to see if @Rebecca Lark would provide her hand.

𝓘t sounded horrible, knowing something awful would happen to a friend or loved one long before it did. She couldn't imagine being in a situation like that, let alone having known about it in advance and knowing that whatever you chose to do could ensure it, rather than prevent it. If she was being truly honest, it sounded terrifying. Still, the answer to his hypothetical was laughably clear to her black-and-white brain. "Obviously I'd tell them. What use would hiding it from them be? It's better if everyone has all the info, you make better choices like that." She was also abysmally terrible at hiding things like that from people, so there'd really be no point, in her case.

The Slytherin team was already way too good at Quidditch, so this was a terrifying prospect. Mind you, they would be losing their terrifying beater-queen this upcoming year, but the idea of replacing her with someone who could predict the Ravenclaw team's every move was not ideal. She wished she was smarter so she could figure out a way to stop this. Poison? Swatting? Giant squid accident? These were all crimes, which may cause more problems than they solved. Also, this guy had been kind of rude to her, maybe, and was quite possibly too good at Quidditch, but she didn't actually want anything bad to happen to him. She'd have to think more on this. Maybe he could just fly blindfolded. "Yes, I play Quidditch. It was one of my fun facts, remember?" Perhaps that was the cost of such an incredible gift; you could see the future, but the past was more obscured to you. What a terrible burden it must be to know what's coming, but struggle to remember what had already passed. She'd endeavor to be kinder to this unfortunate boy, even if he implied she was short and was better at Quidditch than she'd like him to be. "I'm sure you'll be proper good at it, once you're on the team."

They sat in silence for a bit as Tommy cleaned their equipment and Bex pondered whether or not Tommy would remember this conversation. Perhaps she could get him a journal? Would that be helpful to him? When he asked for her palm, she stuck it out to him without any hesitation. She wasn't sure exactly what use her hand would be to him, but he was the seer expert, after all. Who was she to question it? "Is my palm, uh, good? Does it like, tell you stuff, or do we have to like, hold hands for you to get a vision?" Wait a second, no, she doesn't like that at all. "Hang on, wait, maybe I've changed my mind." She could not imagine a future worth holding hands in public for.
