Matilde braced herself as the boy’s spell hit her. Instead of some terrible jinx or whatnot happening to her, Matilde felt… better. Had he actually healed her?

Though she managed to successfully cast the dancing feet spell, he dodged it. Maybe that was really a good thing, considering that all along he had been planning to heal her, Merlin’s beard!

Matilde let out an embarrassed squeak as he called out to her. She couldn’t make out exactly what he had said, on account of the wind, but caught something about pointing her wand.

Matilde suddenly noticed just how close behind her Quinn was. Now they were side by side. The Ravenclaw and Minnie were not too far behind them either. Matilde wasn’t sure where the Slytherin had gotten off to.

Matilde heard the moderator call out that the race was more than half over. She adjusted her grip on her broom, and tried to guess what her opponents might be up to. She glanced beside her at Quinn, who definitely looked like she was plotting. Everything was going so quickly. What should she do? Was it best to be offensive? Could she be able to win if she just kept flying straight? Matilde wasn’t sure.

ROUND 4

This round was, to say the least, very boring... From an attacks point of view. Unexpectedly, nobody fired a shot and instead, zoomed towards the end that was very clearly in sight. Everyone but Elisa, at least. Now worried, Alyssea quickly hopped onto her broom and headed towards the winds, keeping her grip firm and posture steady. Once she got close enough, she tapped Elisa's broom and said, "C'mon, you don't look too good and I've had too many people called into the infirmary for hypothermia the last few months. Nurse Sabo won't be happy at me."

Alyssea quickly cast an air-heating charm to hopefully thaw Elisa enough for the girl to feel her hands. As they set towards the ground, Alyssea watched everyone on.

Here it was, though, the splendid pigeons. Despite how nonchalant and peaceful they looked, they were nasty. As expected, Pericles managed to get by just fine. The rest were manoeuvring like their life depended on it because, well, it kind of did. If they could dodge it, they wouldn't feel gross for the rest of the race.

Minnie was the only one afforded that luxury with Pericles. Alyssea gasped as Matilde got covered in poop and Quinn's eyes were blinded. Getting poop in your eyes was the number one thing Alyssea never wanted to experience which was amusing because she used to be a duellist. Getting blown up by a spell was normal, apparently?

Another gasp escaped Alyssea's lips as Quinn and Matilde got caught in the vines. She got a bit of a flashback when she remembered that exact scenario happening to Serena back in the fall races. Gosh, it really ruined any strategy and hope for a win.

So, it was pretty clear now. Pericles was going to win this. Unless someone managed to break free in time to contend for first place. Pretty nerve-wracking stuff, huh?

	"Imagine being beat by a little firstie!" Quinn's passing goad was answered by a hard squint, but Pericles maintained his manners, reminding himself of his vow against violence on the firsties. He settled for a mumble of mock offense: "Well I never." Evidently, that was all the inspiration he needed to take things a mite more seriously. The Ravenclaw hurtled after the duo, boots braced against the stirrups and scarf fluttering manically in his wake. Sounds were drowned out for a time by the screaming wind. As the racers barreled towards a flock of pigeons, Pericles adjusted his goggles (wouldn't want to risk his eyes). He anticipated their erratic flight pattern, cut a wide berth, and spared himself a gnarly fate. The boy braced for the vines up ahead by tightening his posture against his broom, weaving through the tangles of green untouched. Yet it was there that he realized he'd gone from gaining on the front two to passing them. As the Ravenclaw soared by Quinn, he took the chance to tease right back, drawling "Imagine." Peri slowed to a stop, turned in the saddle and aimed at the vines above them, encouraging "Come on, then. Let's see this through."

Minnie winced as Quinn and Matilde got hit by birds and tangled in the vines. She also felt annoyed as she saw the older boy about to win. She could do something that would definitely stop him...but it was very illegal. And it would slow her down. But...she was very good at incendio....it was a bit of a dilemma, but not a moral one. She was completely fine with setting the older boy on fire. But she wasn't sure if it would stop him. And she really wanted to win, or at least get second. Also, she might catch the vines and Quinn on fire, which would not be good. So what to do? There were a lot of choices to do, and so little time to do them. "Hey older boy, your going down!" She yelled, trying to appear confident whilst in reality the exact opposite. She held her breath and hoped it wouldn't attract any unnecessary attention. It didn't seem like the others suddenly were going to attack her, so she assumed she was fine. She took a deep breath, took out her wand, and pointed it at the boy. Her mind was made up. Quinn saw the birds and knew what was going to happen before it did. Aw God! Quinn thought realizing her eyes would need a thorough washing after this race. Her broom managed to stay mostly on course as she blindly tried to stay straight. A thorn jabbed into her arms and she could tell she was caught in vines. The boy she had been teasing before teased right back. I guess I saw that coming. Quinn thought. Suprisingly his next few words were... encouraging? Quinn rubbed poop off her eyes and saw Pericles stopped in front of them. Quinn also saw a sickening sight. Minnie! No, please no! Don't shoot a spell at me! Quinn thought seeing her colleagues wand out. Quinn desperately tried to rench her broom out of the vines and move forward. If only she had been a little more calculating then maybe she wouldn't be in this situation. The bird poop was starting to really get on her nerves. Her sight was bad seeing as she was squinting and she really hated the feeling of it. The vines were digging into her skin and she could feel herself bleeding. She knew that she would probably need a trip to the hospital wing after this.

Matilde decided against trying anything too close to the end of the game. She pointed her broom straight, and continued forward. When she and her fellow racers were all so close together, Matilde had been sure at least someone was going to let loose a spell. But nothing happened. Focusing back in front of her, Matilde’s eyes widened as she spotted the swarm of pigeons. Though she tried her best to go around them, Matilde was pelted. Ugh, yuck! She couldn’t help exclaim. Quinn had a similar reaction as she too got pooped. At least it hadn’t gotten in her eyes, she reflected, cringing as she realized her friend hadn’t been as lucky.

Matilde kept flying. She did her best to avoid the vines, but it wasn’t enough. She was trapped. No, no! She thought, helplessly. Quinn was stuck too, but not the older boy. Matilde sighed. “Come on then, let's see this through,” she heard him say. She supposed she had expected this. There was no way any of the first years were going to beat him, right? Well, it was all in good fun, she thought, smiling. Not bad for a first race, she couldn’t help but think.

Alyssea could only gape in awe as the precision of Pericles' cast hit only the vines and not the two racers stuck in them. With half the bush now partly gone, it was less of a threat than first established. That would've definitely been useful for them earlier. Oh, well. What's done is done. Should Minnie manage to catch up (she 100% would), the vines would hardly be an issue for her.

UNIT 15 - Moderate Vines

With only mere centimetres to go before the finish line, Matilde and Quinn found the strength to escape the vines' grasp. Was it because Pericles cut down part of it? Maybe, maybe not. Alyssea wasn't sure. All she knew was that she'd have to keep her eyes peeled to see who would cross the finish line first. With the entire lot vying for the finish, she had to keep it fair.

And with that, it was a wrap! Alyssea jumped and clapped as the rest followed behind Pericles. Quinn was very close to the end but just fell short. Minnie and Matilde trailed behind a few seconds later which Alyssea could understand. After getting pushed around by the track, let alone getting pooped by pigeons, exhaustion was just one of many emotions.

Both Minnie and Matilde were on Hufflepuff's racing waitlist and having now seen their performance in a practice race, Alyssea could see potential. Who was higher up on the waitlist between the two, again? They would be replacing Serena come graduation...

(Alyssea pushed the thought of graduation away. As much as she wanted to become a Third Year, she wasn't ready to face people leaving.)

Alyssea hopped onto her broom again and pointed her wand towards Matilde and Quinn, whispering "Scourgify," and watching the pigeon poop wash off in a blink. She gave them all a smile. "Thank you for racing! I'll accompany you guys to the hospital wing for all those scratches."

She turned to Pericles and gave a bigger grin. "Is there anything you can't do? You'd be an awesome racer, too."

	At the successful cast of a Severing Charm, Pericles immediately veered about on his broom, not waiting for the duo to finish freeing themselves from the sliced vines. He heard a voice behind him shout out: "Hey older boy, you're going down!" Without turning, he called back, projecting over the wind: "'Fraid it's a little late for that, Puff!" Frankly, he had expected the entire flock to turn on him from the start, and wouldn't have blamed them for it one bit. But Pericles imagined they might be too timid to cast at an older year, unaware that he'd made a vow of pacifism. While winning against a gaggle of first-years wasn't necessarily significant, losing would have been, as one of them pointed out. In the end, it was an incredibly close win. Peri paused beyond the finish line to stretch and catch his breath, considering those who'd crossed neck-and-neck with him, nodding in approval. "That was some fine flying. You lot gave me a run for my money." His praise to the group was bounced back as a high compliment from Alyssea. Peri's expression warmed with fondness and appreciation, though he spoke with a humble dismissiveness, saying "You flatter me, Lys. Thank you for today. I've been wanting to try my hand at racing, and after this, well... you just might see me in the skies sooner than you think." With a wink, he left her to attend the other racers, coasting off for an easy flight back to Ravenclaw Tower.
