Nighttime, Close to Curfew
Chilly, Rainy Weather
Another day, another hour spent studying in the abandoned bathroom. At least for Marla, since she found the library to be very stress inducing. There was too much noise, especially for a place significantly used for studying. Not that Marla cared, since that was only partially true, she was just making up excuses to go to the abandoned bathrooms more. They were much more creepy when shrouded in night, with almost complete silence, except for the occasional chatter she'd hear from outside the thick wooden door. But somehow it was comforting, the dirt on the walls and cracks of the floor reminded her of her uncle's flat in Scotland. The only place where she genuinely felt at home other than Hogwarts.
Marla took a great, big breath of the musty air and indulged herself in the peacefully isolating ambiance as she leaned against a wall in between two sinks and continued reading a book that she had put a fairly good dent in; The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self Protection. Even though it was meant for school, which was probably invented to be the most unbearable and boring place to be ever (even learning magic could get a little boring), Marla couldn't put the book down. It was so interesting to learn about different spells and methods of using them. Especially because of the girl's aspiring dream of becoming an Auror. It was technically a magical superhero, how epic was that? Of course, the obvious disadvantage was the looming threat of death at almost every second, even when off the job, but why live a long life if it's going to be boring?
No matter, it was getting late and although Marla adored the atmosphere around her at the moment with everything shrouded in darkness except for the light protruding from her wand, the pitter patter of the rain on the windows, and the muffled whistling of wind from outside, she hadn't gotten in trouble for the whole year and she wasn't going to break her record by something as stupid as breaking curfew. But as she gathered her things together and was about to head out the door, a slither of light protruded from the door, along with a loud creeak!, as she saw another student coming inside the bathroom. For some reason, she didn't even know why, but it made her a bit annoyed for some reason. Maybe it was because of Marla's lack of sleep, or that she had skipped dinner that day... Either way, she was not in the mood to see another person.
"What're you doing in here?" She asked plainly, trying not to show any emotion as she shined her wand in the students face, holding her heavy book in her other hand. "It's almost ten thirty, I suggest you go back to your common room." Marla spoke in a firm, passive-aggressive tone and decided to sit back down in her previous spot, between two sinks, opening her book and pointing her wand at her book, proceeding to read where she left off. This was probably not going to go well.

To say Blaire was upset was an understatement. Another brisk turn of the page, eyes squinted in frustration. Her mind was racing a thousand paces, playing the events that had occurred at dinner that night over and over again in her head. She shouldn’t have blown up like that. But then again, that girl had no right to yell at her that way. Blaire hadn’t meant to step on her, it was a total accident. She had tripped for goodness sakes.
Sighing, Blaire finally glanced up. She could sense the few Slytherins that were loitering around in the common room were talking about her in hushed voices. Slamming the book on her lap closed, she stood up. Not wanting to retire to bed just yet, she ducked out into the corridor. She needed some fresh air. But fresh air was hard to come by down here in the lowest part of Hogwarts. Making her way up to the ground floor, she moved silently, unaware of what time it was. Blaire couldn’t be hundred percent positive as to what time it was, it was raining outside and had been dark out most of the day. Still, she didn’t want to be caught out roaming the halls past curfew.
Blaire listened to the rain pounding down on the castle walls outside. It was soothing, and it masked the echoes of her footfalls on the stone floor. Blaire took another staircase, looking about at the moving portraits surrounding her. Recalling the words the older Slytherin had barked at her, Blaire flinched instinctively. Someone had tripped Blaire as she was leaving the Great Hall after dinner. Her arms had been full, carrying the homework she had worked on during dinner. With nothing to catch her fall or help guide her to the ground she tumbled forward, pushing the other girl in her back on her way down.
”Could you be any more of a spaz?” Blaire looked up to see who was yelling at her, as she was sprawled out on the ground. Her books and loose papers had gone flying. As she frantically tried to gather her stuff, the older girl stepped in front of Blaire, blocking her escape. By now everyone around them was starring, some giggling. Others pointing. Blaire could feel the heat rise to her face, surely her cheeks were bright red now. Standing her ground, the little Slytherin rose from the floor, looking her pier in the eyes. ”It was an accident, no need to spaz out about it.” Blaire had retorted, raising her voice ever so slightly to show she wouldn’t cower down. Even though the other female was twice Blaire’s height, and probably weighed double. ”You aren’t worth the detention, wimp.” As she said this, she gave Blaire a hard shove backwards before taking her seat. Blaire, fuming at this point, exited the Great Hall quickly.
Blaire felt like a chicken; she should have stood up for herself better. The thought brought tears unintentionally to her eyes. Blinking rapidly, she tried to force them back down. But it was too late, she could feel some of them gliding down her cheeks already. Farther down at the other end of the corridor Blaire thought she heard the faintest laugh. Not wanting to be seen crying in a hallway late at night, she slipped into the closest door to her. She had assumed it was a classroom she had just entered. Jumping at the unexpected voice coming from behind her, she glanced around as her eyes adjusted to the darkness. It wasn’t a classroom she had entered, but the old abandoned toilets.
Getting her bearings down, Blaire finally cast an apprehensive look at the other student. What right did she have to scold her for being out of bed so late? She herself was here too, not in her dormitory. Wiping at her tear streaked face quickly with the back of her hand, she felt a slight tinge of warmth in her cheeks. ”I could suggest the same thing to you. I’m assuming there isn’t some special clause in that rule that allows you to be reading after hours in the toilets.” Blaire could hear the brassiness in her voice. Pursing her lips together, she crossed her arms in front of her chest defiantly. Who did this girl think she was anyways? Blaire wasn’t in the mood to back down this time.

Marla rolled her eyes. In any normal circumstances she would have disregarded the girl or probably tried to befriend her, even. But she was completely exhausted and overall in a horrid mood. It wasn't wise to take out her anger on somebody, but she was going a bit haywire from being starving and sleepless for hours.
”I could suggest the same thing to you. I’m assuming there isn’t some special clause in that rule that allows you to be reading after hours in the toilets.” The girl returned the coldness that Marla had given her. As she looked up at the student, the small girl felt a twinge in her gut. Was she crying? Her face was slightly pink and her eyes near bloodshot. Marla felt horrible– she didn't mean to make this girl's day even worse, and everything was screaming for her to not say anything rude back, but Marla wasn't letting her pride get in the way of anything.
"I'm sorry– are you crying?" Marla asked in no particular tone, trying to see how things would play out. After all, she didn't exactly want to be enemies with anyone. Especially at a school where they teach you spells that could be disastrous for the victim. She pointed her wand more upwards to get a better look at the girl's face. "And I was just suggesting that you go back, not telling you what to do." She reasoned, crossing her arms with the book she had been reading in her grasp. "I wasn't trying to be a jerk or anything, sorry if you got the wrong idea." Marla mumbled her words so low that it was almost a whisper, she wasn't even sure if the other student could hear her. Even if they got off on the wrong start, it wouldn't hurt to introduce herself.
"I'm Marla. And you?"

Blaire could hear the infliction in her tone. She flinched a little at the sound of it. She hadn't meant to come off so snarky. It had been a long day, and the last thing she wanted to do was have to defend herself again. But that wasn’t this girl’s fault. Looking over her fellow bathroom companion, the other girl couldn’t be much older than Blaire was herself. For all Blaire knew, she could be having a bad day as well. She was reading in the abandoned toilets after all. Blaire was not one to judge, she studied in some odd places herself.
For Hogwarts being such a large castle, it was sometimes quite hard to find an empty place to truly concentrate on one’s studies. Blaire missed having an actual space to call her own. She still wasn’t entirely used to sharing a room with multiple other girls. Back home, she had always had her own bedroom, and basically the whole second floor was her domain. Glancing around the restroom once again, she shrugged inwardly, aside from the slight smell, and constant sound of dripping water this wasn’t a bad place.
Not many kids used this area anymore. At one-point, Blaire thought she had overheard a group of older boys talking about it. One of them had said it was haunted by a child that had been murdered here. But Blaire rolled her eyes at this, refusing to believe much of what anyone said. They were probably just trying to scare one another… Shuffling her feet, she leaned against the wall nearest the door, incase she felt the need to exit suddenly. Her guard was very much so still up. Just because the female sitting on the floor looked harmless, didn’t mean much to Blaire.
Adjusting her gaze, she looked down. "I'm sorry– are you crying?" Opening her mouth, she tried to form a sentence, then closed it again just as quickly. First, she thought she may forget her pride for a second and admit to it. But quickly she changed her mind. ”No… of course not.” Pushing herself off the wall, she crossed the restroom, further into the shadows away from the glow emitting from the girl's wand. She wasn’t sure if her eyes were puffy, or if her cheeks were flushed, giving away her real emotions. Her face always betrayed her, giving away her true feelings.
Blaire listened to the girl’s words carefully, taking it all in. ”I’m just not in the mood to argue tonight, I suppose. Sorry, for being so defensive.” Blaire stepped up to the window, tracing a zig zag in the thick dust that caked the glass. ”My name’s Blaire.” Wiping away at her doodle, she turned back to face Marla. ”So, if you don’t mind me asking, what are you doing in here so late?” Blaire asked, raising her hands gesturing at their surroundings.

[quote]Marla pursed her lips together as the girl scrambled to answer her question, moving somewhere else to cover her face. She'd most definitely been crying, but Marla wasn't about to admit that she knew, it was bad enough she was crying in front of Marla, someone she wasn't exactly on great terms with (despite meeting five minutes ago). It didn't matter if the Slytherin had snapped at her– Marla started the quarrel first, after all. She didn't even know why, Marla wasn't even in that much of a bad mood. And now the two were having quite the awkward conversation. Good job.
However, it kind of softened up the mood when the Slytherin apologized for snapping. Marla shook her head despite the other girl probably not being able to see her.
"I was the one who started it. No need to take the blame." She mentioned with a fake smile. Right afterward, Marla set her book down and flopped onto the floor. It seemed the conversation was going to be a while, and there was no way she was holding that giant book the whole time. No. Way. Not with her noodle arms. The Slytherin introduced herself as Blaire, and immediately, Marla got a twinge of jealousy in her gut. Marla was such a grandma-y name. Why did everyone have cool names like Blaire, Koko, Ruby... And she was stuck with a stupid name that her grandparents gave her. How dumb? Blaire was the perfect name for a witch with pristine blonde hair that was enviously perfect. Marla was the perfect name for an old person that smelled like prunes.
”So, if you don’t mind me asking, what are you doing in here so late?” Blaire had asked. Marla let out a small giggle. The blonde's tone of voice made it seem like where she was reading was ridiculous. And, well, she wasn't wrong. The abandoned bathrooms is the most unlikely place anyone would want to be. Which is why she was in there. Nobody came into the deserted, gross bathrooms. Only that one weirdo who exploded a toilet in there around a month ago. Yikes.
"Well", Marla paused, trying to figure out how to word her sentence,"It's so hard to focus and get alone time. I feel like everywhere is too loud except for here. Especially with the thick door, it blocks out a lot of the outside noise which makes it all the better." She explained, a smile tugging at her lips. "And you?" Marla was genuinely curious on why she was in the abandoned bathrooms... At ten at night. What would anyone have to do here? It's a dump.
"Oh by the way, not trying to be nosy, but if you were crying, you can talk to me about it. I know we got off on the wrong foot but I won't tell anyone." She mentioned, playing with the pages in her book. The girl wasn't lying, either. Marla had suppressed her emotions before and she almost exploded with frustration. It's practically Chinese water torture to bottle everything up inside. Might as well let her talk if she wants to.

[quote]Blaire smirked a little at the girl’s remark. ‘No need to take the blame.’ She was used to always taking the blame. Her mother seemed to always dump it on her. When she was having an especially rough day after a long night of partying, she would always find something to yell at Blaire about. Blaire had to always be on the defense when she was home. She never knew what kind of mood she would find her mother in. The few conversations Blaire had had with her father typically ended with him explaining how if Blaire behaved better then her mother wouldn’t have anything to be upset about. Of course, their marriage issues were due to her, not his infidelity.
Her defensive, abrasive personality could be the reason Blaire hadn’t made too many friends at Hogwarts yet. It could be a bit off-putting to some people. And when Blaire met another strong personality that reminded her of her mother’s, she met them with attitude. Blaire hadn’t acquired the best reputation with some students. But she was trying to work on that. Blaire had hoped to at least make one true friend this year. Someone she could vent to, share secrets with, have inside jokes with. But with the way things had been going, it seemed like Blaire wouldn’t find one of those this year.
Blaire nervously twisted a strand of hair between her fingers, as she nibbled on the inside of her cheek. This was probably the longest conversation she had had with anybody all day. Possibly, all week even. As she listened to Marla talk, she leaned against the wall under the window. She had tried to touch as little as possible, not wanting to get too much dirt or grime on her shirt. But giving up on that idea, she finally dropped down to the floor. Bringing her knees up to her chest, she wrapped her wispy arms around them, hugging her knees. Blaire felt Marla’s frustrations about not having a quiet place. And she also missed her alone time as well.
Blaire smiled ever so slightly, ”I can see the charm this place brings. I miss having a moment just to myself….” Blaire hoped this didn’t make her sound snobbish. ”It’s not that I don’t like my housemates, but when your surrounded day and night by people, it gets a little overwhelming. Blaire fidgeted with her hair again, it was a bad nervous habit she wanted to break. She mulled over the idea of telling this stranger what had happened earlier. Marla seemed like she was genuinely concerned. ”Well, I was out walking the corridors trying to get some fresh air. The Slytherin common room doesn’t have the best ventilation.” Blaire giggled slightly at her own joke. ”But I ducked in here by accident. I thought I heard someone coming towards me and I…. I didn’t want them to, umm, to see that I was crying. But here you are, to witness it. I’m not normally so emotional, but I had a rough time at dinner, I guess. Blaire realized she had been starring down at the floor this whole time. Glancing back over at Marla, she could feel herself blush out of habit.

[quote]"I can see the charm this place brings. I miss having a moment just to myself….” Blaire had mentioned with a smile tugging at her lips. The redhead couldn't help but grin as well. It was nice that someone thought that the bathrooms were peaceful instead of gross. Most people would laugh if Marla mentioned that she sought refuge in the gross toilets where someone had allegedly died. And she could completely understand where Blaire was coming from. Hogwarts was amazing, yes. It's a gigantic, magical castle, for god's sake– but it got crowded. Especially when you're pretty much forced to interact with countless people on a daily basis. But Marla would take Hogwarts any day over going home. She was eternally grateful for even being able to live there. "It’s not that I don’t like my housemates, but when your surrounded day and night by people, it gets a little overwhelming." Blaire had added.
"No kidding. I swear I can never get a minute alone in this school. People are at every corner. It's so frustrating sometimes..." Marla scratched her gold necklace in a fidgety attempt to get the rust off. The necklace wasn't very pretty– it was a tiny emblem, evidently having years of wear, but it meant the world to her. Marla's uncle had given it to her on her eighth birthday. It was almost as if she felt protected by it, a good luck charm. She hadn't taken it off since he gave it to her.
Soon enough, Marla was circling back to the slightly uncomfortable topic of why Blaire was crying. She'd surprisingly answered her, despite their argument just moments ago.

Witches and wizards were no exception.
"I mean, at least you aren't bottling anything up. I did that once and ended up exploding all of the glass in my house." She half-joked, looking down at the ground, tracing the cover of her book. Marla looked up at Blaire, noticing that her cheeks were a bit flushed. She immediately felt guilty for bringing up the Slytherin crying. She didn't want to make the girl feel ashamed, Marla wanted to help her feel the opposite, actually. If she had the chance to help someone avoid feeling like absolute rubbish, the redhead would take it.
"What happened at dinner, if it's alright for me to ask?" Marla asked, squinting her eyes a bit, wondering if that was appropriate for her to mention.

[quote]"No kidding. I swear I can never get a minute alone in this school. People are at every corner. It's so frustrating sometimes. Blaire couldn’t agree more. At home there was always some place she could sneak off to when she needed time to herself. This frustration would make even the dingiest place seem like an oasis. As she wiped away at another cobweb that clung to her tights, she glanced around. The place was starting to grow on her more and more.
Blaire watched as Marla fidgeted about. Was she uncomfortable having to carry on this conversation with Blaire? It was late, she could tell by the dim light creeping under the door. The candlelight in the corridor was burning low now. Hopefully there wasn’t a teacher, or a prefect roaming the halls, making sure students weren’t out of bed at this hour. Blaire had made it this far in the year without getting a single detention. She had hoped to make it all year without causing too much trouble.
"I mean, at least you aren't bottling anything up. I did that once and ended up exploding all of the glass in my house." A small smirk crept across Blaire’s face, and she raised her eyebrows ever so slightly. ”I got so mad one time that I accidentally made a giant chandelier come crashing down… my mother wasn’t too pleased with me,” Blaire said as she crossed her legs over the other way. Fumbling with a strand of hair she watched as a small spider made its way up one of the sinks closest to her. It disappeared into the faucet.
Blaire looked back at Marla as she mentioned dinner. Twisting the hair nervously between her fingers she looked down. ”Honestly, I lost my temper. I tripped and fell into an older Slytherin girl. She got mad, and yelled at me, I snapped back. I could care less about the girl, but I should know by now how to handle those situations. I shouldn’t let my emotions get the best of me.” Blaire was surprised at how open she was being. She didn’t like to discuss things like feelings with other people. It wasn’t proper, one should always show self-control. Or, at least, that was how she was raised.

[quote]Funny. Marla never thought that she'd say that about someone that five minutes ago she thought was a complete prick, but here we are.
"I got so mad one time that I accidentally made a giant chandelier come crashing down… my mother wasn’t too pleased with me," Blaire said, twirling a piece of hair between her fingers. The redhead burst out in little fits of laughter. She couldn't help it. No, Marla couldn't exactly see the Slytherin clearly in the dark, but picturing a mini version of the girl making a chandelier come crashing down... It was a bit funny to think about.
"Sorry," the small Gryffindor said, a toothless grin plastered on her face,"Isn't it weird to think about how us, just tiny kids are capable of mass destruction?" The girl waved her wand in a jokingly intimidating manner. Despite being a joke, this was partially true. The two in the bathroom were merely first years, and yet they managed to destroy huge parts of their houses. This was magic mixed in with extreme emotions, yes, but that didn't make it all the less dangerous. Especially when children like herself weren't very good at controlling how they feel, if it came out in magic it could be... a hazard. To say the least.
"Honestly, I lost my temper. I tripped and fell into an older Slytherin girl. She got mad, and yelled at me, I snapped back. I could care less about the girl, but I should know by now how to handle those situations. I shouldn’t let my emotions get the best of me." Blaire admitted.
"No sweat, everyone snaps once in a while," she shrugged, "I mean, I get angry so easily. My temper is nonexistent at this point. Gone." She said, looking down and folding the pages in her book. It was strange admitting that she had an anger problem. Marla didn't exactly want to face it, even though she knew that it was there. There wasn't even a reason to do it, really. Maybe it was because Blaire admitted something herself? Either way, it felt good to say that out loud, even if it was kind of scary.
"But honestly? It isn't that bad that you snapped at the girl. She sounds like a jerk. Probably deserved it." Marla added, raising her brows. Blaire seemed like a calm and collected person. If someone made her yell or extremely angry. they'd probably have to try reeeally hard to do that. The small Gryffindor wasn't sure if that was true or not though. She didn't even really know the girl for an hour yet. But for some reason, it felt really nice to talk to her. Freeing, even. Just being able to spill all your secrets out to a complete stranger is somehow very liberating.
