Spotting Colin McCoire between classes was easy. The boy's pale hair, his unusual fashion sense (why was he permitted to strut around in a kilt?) and his terribly annoying voice all stood out like a sore thumb. It wasn't so much the sound of his voice, but rather the verbal diarrhoea that came pouring out of the boy's mouth that made Finn wince from second-hand embarrassment.

Slammed with assignments and out of pity for Lily, he had let Colin's accusatory note slide and had moved on. But the Slytherin just wouldn't give it a rest. The boy was obsessed with his sister's imaginary love life and admittedly, Finn hadn't helped things by leaning into Colin's delusion. Instead of fucking off however, Colin had gotten into his face, drooling and snarling like a mad dog and issued a direct challenge, the kind that just couldn't be ignored.

Christmas break had come and gone, but he hadn't forgotten about Colin's challenge. Though the boy had stormed off right after issuing it, Finnegan had made a point of accepting it loudly and clearly when they happened to cross paths in the corridors not much later. Actually booking a spot in the duelling hall when neither of them had class had taken longer than he would've liked, but there wasn't a hair on his head that considered midnight duels in the corridors a viable option anymore, not after what had happened between him and Clark.

One duel won, one lost, third time’s the charm, right? he thought to himself while he paced up and down the length of the duelling platform, drumming his wand against his thigh. He wasn’t scared of Colin, but he wasn’t stupid either. Colin had a year on him and probably knew a dozen more spells at least. How could he possibly hope to counter those when he didn’t even know what they were? I’ve got to be nimble, move fast, stay out of his way… Perhaps not having shot up yet like some of the boys in third-year was to his advantage, there was simply less of him and more of Colin to hit. Still, the last time he’d tried petrifying the obnoxious Slytherin hadn’t gone over too well. Perhaps he ought to try something different this time…

Not wanting to seem anxious, Finnegan hopped off the platform, leaned against the nearest wall and kept his eyes trained on the large double doors leading into the duelling hall. He idly hoped Colin wouldn’t be bringing too much of a crowd with him, but the other had a way of disappointing him. C’mon McCoire… what’s keeping you? Finnegan rolled his wand between his fingers, half-hoping that the flamboyant boy had simply chickened out and wasn’t about to burst through those doors.

Ten slow minutes had crawled past and still no sign of long, white hair; no sign of Colin's smug face, baring his teeth like he was playing at wolf. People were giving him funny looks because he'd been pacing up and down the duelling hall for minutes on end, only to end up sitting on the edge of a mat, turning his wand restlessly round and round between his fingers. No one had said anything yet, but he could feel their silent judgement burn right through his robes anyway. The regulars of the duelling hall were a bloodthirsty, impatient bunch and he could almost hear their scornful thoughts. Another stupid, skinny Gryffindor desecrating their dojo with thoughts of grandeur. How adorable.

Fine. He answered their silent judgement in the privacy of his mind. Fine, I'll go. He stood up and shot one final glance around the room to check if McCoire hadn't been cowering in a corner all along, perhaps hiding behind a plant, but found no hint of the third-year anywhere. The arseling had left him hanging like yesterday's laundry.

Pushing through the double doors like Aragorn@Remedy Norden, he made his way out of the duelling hall and tried to feel relieved.

By all rights he should be relieved. Colin might be an obnoxious git, but he was an obnoxious git with a wand a three years worth of spells in his noggin. Bravery and stubborness alone couldn't beat him and perhaps he had gotten incredibly lucky by avoiding battle today.

Yet for every drop of relief, two more drops of poisinous anger coursed through his veins. He'd been made to look like an idiot, sitting there, clearly anxious and waiting for someone who had never shown up.

He should just let it slide, he should just carry on as usual and thank the Lord on his bare, knoobly knees that he'd been afforded an escape from an unfair fight. Yet all he could muster was resentment and thoughts of revenge. One way or another, they'd have their duel, it was just a matter of time.
