Kaitlyn skipped out of the castle. Her Slytherin uniform was as impeccable as ever, as if she just left her dorm room early in the morning. Even her pigtails down her back looked clean and fresh. Her satchel bounced against her thigh as she headed down one of the pathways. The young Slytherin had a rather … eventful day. She almost knocked over a pot in Herbology, she somehow managed to stabilize her violently bubbling potion in Potions, and she had to save her twin sister, Abigail from a book. The twins were studying together in the library. Somehow, Abigail had knocked over a monster book from the shelf, and it chased after her, attempting to bite her. That was … to put it mildly, wild.

In her satchel, Kaitlyn carried a bunch of drawing supplies and her sketchbook. She wanted to relax sketching. Because she loved the outdoors, she figured this would be a good spot to relax and draw. At least, in her very humble opinion.

As she was nearing the lake, Kaitlyn spotted a girl drawing by the shore. She recognized the figure. ‘I think her name is Sarah …. from Hufflepuff, if I remember correctly. I vaguely remember an incident involving her and a plate from dinner. I hope she’s all right,’ she thought. She turned to skip towards the lake. “Hi,” she greeted her, shyly. “I s-see we have t-the same idea,” she offered a shy smile, as she pulled her sketchbook out of her satchel.

Kaitlyn flushed dark red, when she noticed that she had scared the girl. “S-sorry!” She exclaimed, feeling immediately bad. ‘I should’ve approached differently … gah, my anxiety. I hope I didn’t ruin a friendship,’ she thought and quietly sighed.

Offering a small smile, Kaitlyn nodded at the girl’s confirmation, ignoring the seemingly dismissive tone. ‘I did just scare her, after all. I should just be glad a spell wasn’t thrown in my face. I need to be better at talking to others.’

“It’s n-nice to meet y-you, Sarah. My n-name is Kaitlyn. Yes, please. I’d l-love to join you.” Kaitlyn giggled at Sarah’s statement about the drawing not being good. She smiled brightly at Sarah, wanting to curb her anxiety. “T-there’s no such t-thing as a bad drawing. You can d-draw it however you’d l-like,” she replied optimistically. “A-all that matters is if you l-like it or not.”

Opening her own sketchpad, Kaitlyn took one of her drawing pencils out of her bag. “Do y-you mind if I also draw a m-mermaid?” She asked, quietly. She didn’t want Sarah to think she was going to make her look bad. As she awaited the other girl’s answer, she began to lightly sketch the lake in front of her, carefully reciprocating the ripples in the water’s surface.

Sarah noticed a little stutter in Kaitlyn's voice. This signaled to Sarah that she may be a very shy girl. So Sarah tried to be as comforting as possible when she spoke. The girl, who's name was Kaitlyn, explained to Sarah that her drawing was good as long as the artist enjoyed what they made. Sarah liked this. It didn't matter what anyone else thought of her art, as long as she understood it and loved it.

Do y-you mind if I also draw a m-mermaid?

No. You cannot draw a mermaid. Because I'm drawing a mermaid!!

Sarah made a very serious and stern face at Kaitlyn. Then she smiled and winked at Kaitlyn.

Just kidding! Of course you can draw a mermaid too. We can both draw mermaids and then compare them! It doesn't have to be a competition though.

Sarah added the "not a competition" at the end. Art wasn't supposed to be competitive. Because not one single piece of art was better then another.

Sarah continued to sketch a mermaid on her notepad. It was coming together really well. The shading looked the best she had ever done! Sarah might not have been a good draw-er, but by looking at this mermaid, no one would be able to tell!
