Spring was a great time. And April was proving to be an even better time. First, it started off withe April Fools day. Now that was long past. It was time for another errand. It had been a while since she had participated in one which was why she was here today. In addition, this one was special. Reyna was an astronomy intern and that made this errand even more important.
When she had heard about it she had signed up almost immediately. Reyna loved Astronomy. Maybe it was because it was her best subject of maybe because she found the planets and stars so fascinating. Not something that she had thought she would be interested in but things turned out the way they did.
Reyna arrived in the Library for the errand. She would have to write an essay or a poster. Or both. She needed to choose a topic first though. She scanned through a few textbooks. As an Astronomy Intern she wanted to choose something cool and more complex. Zodiac signs interested her but she decided to do something else. Not stars, not planets.
She delved deeper into the book and found something she hadn't learnt about before. Auroras. After doing some research she was ready to write an essay or create a poster. She would start with the poster then if she had time she would then write the poster.
She looked up to see who else was there. She noticed plenty of Astronomy Interns and then she also noticed Linda as well. In addition she noticed the poster advertising for Astronomy Interns. Glancing at it, she recognized it as Linda's handwriting. She grinned. Linda had made a nice poster advertising if people needed help. Reyna grabbed her stuff and moved to Linda's table and tapped her on the shoulder.
"Hey bestie!" I said, "How are you? Have you written your essay or made your poster?"
I began to work on mine now. "I'm working on mine right not haha! As you can probably see right here." I added, "What topic did you do? I'm doing Auroras."
I glanced back at the textbook to do some more research. I was excited for this poster to come along. I started by writing a few facts down on the poster. Then I would do the drawing and pictures and lastly the coloring and glueing. Of course I would add some additives and glue them on as well.
I wrote down four facts and decided that I was done with the facts part. Then I moved on to the pictures and the drawings. I found four pictures and cut them out in different shapes so that it would look cool.
Then I glued them on next to the facts. I then started with the drawings and the titles. For the title I put my name and Auroras. I was almost done now. I cut out some stars and drew out some Auroras to the best of my ability which was not very great. I mean it kind of looked like an Aurora. On the other hand it looked kind of like a galaxy as well.
I guess it was informational, that was what mattered, not how good the drawings were. I stood up to admire my work. It was pretty good. I glanced at Linda. "Hey Linda, do you like my poster?" I asked.
I liked it. I looked around. There were many people here working on their posters or essays. I would work on the essay next if I had time. First, I wanted to walk around a bit and talk to some people. I took a short walk around and glanced at other people's works. Their's were pretty good as well.
I went back to the table I was at and smiled. This was honestly pretty fun. Now essay time. At least I had already done the research.

Mellani had heard of the errand and as an astronomy intern, she felt obliged to be a part of it and help all the others out. Besides this, it was also taking place in her favorite part of Hogwarts - The Library. Mellani entered the library and looked around. It was beautifully decorated, and Mellani could understand the effort that was put into it.

She looked at all the poster making supplies and decided that she would make a poster. Mellani picked up several books and piled them on a desk. While taking books, she noticed the other Astronomy Interns gathered a short distance away and waved to them. Linda, her bestfriend was also present, and Mellani went to greet her. "Hey Linda! What are you doing your poster or essay on?", she asked.

After a bit of talking, she helped those in need, finding books and supplies for whatever they wanted to do. She encouraged those who seemed to be struggling with what to do telling them to be creative and make whatever they wanted. No one was going to judge them. She also appreciated the work of several people before going back to her own poster. After a bit of reading, she decided to make a poster based on the black hole.

The black hole was a subject that struck Mellani as something really interesting. She knew that it could be extremely dangerous, but to her young mind it sounded cool and like a lot of fun. A place which even light couldn't escape... Mellani got to work, first using light pencils to shade the black hole. After that, she took markers and began writing a few facts, all the while wondering what the black hole actually contained. Maybe someday astronomers would find a way to enter the black hole without putting their own lives at much risk. She knew that this sounded impossible, but after seeing the world advancing day-by-day, she was pretty sure technology would find a way to acheive this feat.

When she was a kid, Mellani often thought that blackholes were the same as wormholes, leading to a different dimension or different time. She had often seen movies (another thing she missed about the muggle world), and in those movies, it had seemed a lot like those things actually existed, but come to think of it now, other dimensions just sounds like a childish idea. After all, if there was any such thing, people would have discovered it by now, or at least have some hints, wouldn't they?

The thoughts entered and left Mellani's mind as she quietly worked on her poster, hoping that the professors would like it. All her efforts for making the other students feel better and telling them that no one would judge did not apply to her. She kept feeling like someone would judge or say something about her poster, especially since it was not exactly based on a topic that many people had interest in such as the zodiac signs or meteoroids, but was based on something that the world had hardly any knowledge of. She knew that most people were probably just going to ignore her poster, but she was worried what they would think anyways. Mellani sighed and submitted the poster with her hands shaking.

She took a deep breath in. Whenever she felt nervous or anxious, reading calmed her down, so that was exactly what she did. She opened the books and started reading about different aspects of astronomy. She read about things other than the black holes. She also read about her own zodiac sign, Libra, which apparently stood for balance. Maybe someday she would have more balance in her life too.

Astronomy. It was one subject Nellie didn’t really have any great love for. Sure, it was interesting, but it was a subject in which she found random facts interesting rather than the subject as a whole. An asteroid was going to pass near Earth in the next few years, possibly impacting the surface? It was as interesting as it was terrifying. A star galaxies away with a string of numbers she'd never remember had whatever element present in it's atmosphere? Facts like that exited her mind nearly as quickly as she heard it. Maybe it was just the way she was wired.

And yet, here she was- working on the astro fair. Perhaps she was lured by the thought of something to do. Or, perhaps it was just the house points. She was stil of the opinion that the wizarding world didn't have television for the simple fact that it encouraged wizarding kids to participate in things, like life. Really, it wasn't a bad philosophy. The truth was, she supposed, she'd been lured by the idea of creating art for people to see, no matter how simplistic an approach she was taking.

Finding her mind wandering, she shook her head in an attempt to return herself to the here and now. It worked, focusing on the poster in front of her. So far, she'd painted it black and spattered a few white specks over it to look like stars in space. It had been her undertaking the day before. Today, she'd paint the black hole. Overall, it wasn't really a hard project. It was a chance for her to paint and be artistic. Getting to work, she layered brush stroke upon brush stroke until the black hole was complete. It was good, she guessed, but nothing that would garner any attention. Around the dense black void in the middle of her painting, she added purple, hoping it might allude to the way the black hole bent time and space around it. Her critical eye took in the finished piece. Her brow furrowed and her lips pursed as she studied her work. The art wasn't her finest. Perhaps she needed to paint more space inspired things, but for now, it would do.

Setting that aside to dry for a bit, she moved on to finding her chosen facts to add to her poster. Her feet carried her to a book about black holes. She remembered quite a bit, but she didn't know nearly enough nor did she remember everything she'd learned on the topic. It was one of those things that had actually interested her. Once she was confident in her choice book, she read. Well, really she skimmed. Who could read such a large book in a short span of time? And who, outside Ravenclaw, would want to? Not Nellie. Finding a few facts about black holes, some remembered and some freshly learned, she wrote them on a piece of parchment and returned to the table with it.

Touching the poster, she realized that it wasn't quite dry, though almost. So the Hufflepuff spent some time wandering the library, apprectiating the effort that had been placed into it's decoration. It was no Great Hall, of course, but it was nice. Eventually she found herself back at the table in which she'd begun. Oh how she hated painting words, but in the spirit of continuity, that was the path she'd chosen. Her bush stroke were slow and careful. This was the part that took her the longest. Every word was checked and double checked for spelling so a to not ruin the entire thing with something so silly. Finally she was done.

April 7, 2024
earlier in the day
By the time Aly got to the library for this astronomy festival about which she'd heard so much, it was looking more like a childcare than a student faire. Merlin, that's a lot of first-years, she noted as a gaggle of them ran by with posters and essays clutched in tiny hands. Aly knew she was only three or four years older than the first-years, but there had been something about leaving Hogwarts for six months during the previous year that really made them look so much smaller now, upon her semi-triumphant return.

Still, the fifth-year was not about to let the fact that there appeared to be only three people her age in the entire set-up section of the library - two boys who looked too engrossed in each other to approach, and a redheaded girl she vaguely recognised from Quidditch but still really didn't know - ruin this opportunity for her. Aly had recently begun to pick up more of an interest in Astronomy, which had really always been one of her favoured subjects but had jumped to the top of her list following her father's passing and Aly's inheritance of his beloved telescope. She had tried to get some of her closer friends into Astronomy, but it was becoming increasingly clear that Aly was the star-girl of her little group, and that was something she was thus becoming increasingly determined to pursue.

Maybe even as a career someday. Who knew? She certainly was moving on from her childish childhood dreams of being a Healer, now that she knew that not everything could be healed like she'd always thought.

Speaking of always, that had been the word attached to watching meteor showers in Aly's home growing up. Her father, Benjamin, had always loved to take out the telescope and watch the stars fall from the heavens with her, often in the dead of night - and though Aly had taken up the tradition here at Hogwarts, she'd also come to realise that she didn't know very much about meteor showers at all. Sure, they'd just learned about meteorites in Astronomy class, and Aly knew the Star Shower Spell from one of last year's lessons, and in second and third year there'd been something about constellations and meteor showers - but what were they, and why did they always happen at the same places and times every year? Armed with this topic, Aly marched straight off to the astronomy section of the library, picked out a few hefty tomes about meteorites, meteors, and stargazing, and plopped them on a nearby table to begin sifting through them.

Merlin, she'd missed researching like this, combing through books not for class but for fun. It had been an awfully long time since the little Ravenclaw had gotten to really be a Ravenclaw.
Meteor Showers: They Don't Come To Us, We Go To Them!
Alyssa Salinger

Though it may not seem like it when you're just standing still, our home planet is actually moving quite fast throughout the sky in orbit around our sun. As such, we sometimes run into things - not because the things run into us, but because between our orbit and our entire galaxy's movement, we sometimes go to occupy space that is already occupied. This phenomenon causes a lot of astronomical occurrences that we can see here on the Earth's surface, including but not limited to meteor showers.

Meteor showers look, from the surface, like a bunch of shooting stars over the course of anywhere between a few days and a few weeks, often originating from about the same general spot in the sky - and we may think that those are meteorites coming towards us and then burning up in our atmosphere, but it's actually sort of the other way around. Though the shooting star phenomena is the result of meteorites burning up in Earth's atmosphere and creating those fast, bright streaks in the sky, we come into their space, not vice versa, due to us travelling so fast through space.

But how did they end up there in the first place? Meteorites that burn up to create our meteor showers tend to be the tails of comets that have passed through that area of space before, and the comet just left some litter behind (small rocks, dust particles, ice, etc.) that then burns up in our atmosphere when we pass through. That is also why meteor showers are so predictable - comets are decently predictable as well and follow fairly normal orbits and paths, and we (well, mostly Muggle scientists) can foresee (through scientific Muggle ways, not divination) where the comets will leave their astronomical trash for us to incinerate later.

And one last thing - you may now be wondering why showers are named after constellations instead of comets. That is because, since the comet tail is left in one part of space, one part of our sky gets the meteor shower at a time, and they often look as though they (the meteors) are coming from one specific point in the sky. What else is in the sky? Constellations! As such, we've named our most common meteor showers after the constellations from which it looks like the meteors are originating, which also makes it easier to figure out where to look in the sky if you're meteor-gazing.
After scrawling her essay with one of her favourite eagle quill pens and a pot of glittery navy ink that almost glistened like the dazzling stars in the night sky, Aly stashed everything - extra parchment and all that - back in her satchel, then swung it over her shoulder and stood. As much as she liked Astronomy, there was some other event going on in the courtyard at the same time and the curly-haired teenager wanted to swing by that as well. Seemed that these days there was either nothing going on in her alma mater's hallowed halls... or there was everything, everywhere, all at once.

Aly moseyed up through the stacks to place her essay carefully on the top of the stack on the professor's makeshift desk, and it was only then that her eye really caught the sign, which she had haphazardly glanced over on her way into the library. It was just instructions, right? She wasn't eleven - she could write an essay on her own, of course, but now she realised that there weren't just instructions written on the sign. It also said that posters and essays would be displayed in the multi-story academic atrium for the rest of April, and Aly made a mental note to come back later and look over the others, partially to make sure that hers was one of the best and partially just to learn more about her new favourite subject.

Then words in the second-to-last sentence jumped out at her, and Aly squinted, leaning in and peering closer at the careful script with a curious green gaze.

If you need any assistance, please feel free to ask myself, Professor Starwise, or any of his Astronomy Interns for some help.

Astronomy Interns.

Reeling slightly, Aly took a step back from the sign. There was an Astronomy internship? How had she not known about this? Having served as a Healing intern in the Hospital Wing since her third year, Aly was quite familiar with the fact that Hogwarts had internship programs, but that was usually for things such as Healing and Care of Magical Creatures - things that were common careers for students post-education, to give them a little taste of their future jobs. She'd had not the faintest idea that there existed one for Astronomy.

And she had been going into the Hospital Wing to help less and less, lately, anyways. Losing interest. Maybe it was time to submit a new application somewhere else.

Her mind spinning with possibility like the Earth spun on its axis, Aly turned heel and walked with purpose out of the library, already planning what she'd write on her internship application when she got back to the Ravenclaw common room...

Note! Piérre is a member of the Astronomy Internship program, so feel free to Lightly Godmod him walking around and looking at your projects or helping to collect supplies for your use. I won't be posting after this post, though.

Piérre is very friendly and smiley if a little bit tired at the moment, but will regardless not only happily listen to your essays/talk about your topics but will also actively engage back. Please tag me in your posts if you choose to mention him.. :]
He was already running late to one of his first few obligations as an Astronomy intern, and by the time he did finally arrive to the library where their new Astronomy professor had set up an errand for the students, it was already in full swing.

Piérre was, well, stressed. He found that it had been something rising in his chest for a while. He was also tired, and that was making his brain very fuzzy in a way that he did not appreciate. Still, he was more than willing to find it in himself to be presentable enough to be delightful enough to be interfaced with. His knowledge of Astronomy wasn't something that was astounding, per say, but it was rather eclectic. He had put it to having had good Astronomy teachers in the past, as well as his own interest in the class that had encouraged him to try and do his own research even outside that of the school's expectations.

But as soon as he did walk among the projects and the essays, the tension in the boy's shoulders loosened almost instantaneously--an easy smile spread across his face softly if tiredly. Taking a seat backwards on a chair, he put his chin in his hands and looked over the proceedings with quiet delight. His heel tapped on the ground lightly as he hummed under his breath, green eyes watching and observing and reading the large titles of the essays that he was able to spot around the immediate vicinity. He didn't want to interrupt the thoughts or the ideas of the children that were already knee deep in their conversations around him on all sides. He was just here to be asked for help if they wanted it, or to help them find things that they needed for their projects that were either in progress or just having their finishing touches done.

He himself had an essay that he had wanted to write, speaking to the nature of the universe and the idea of Intelligent Design, but had somewhat run out of time to finish it. Spacetime was another topic that he had considered trying to do some research into, but similarly had... well... run out of time. And with his current situation in all things in his life being a bit on the tumultuous side, he hadn't really been in the mood to try to gather his thoughts in an attempt to either make or share a point that he felt he wasn't entirely prepared to make or argue on behalf of or against. No... today would be a 'slow' day for him. Today he was just here to observe, to people-watch--as he usually did--with his silver bengal Figaro lazily snoozing on his shoulders and curling his paws in and out of the boy's shoulder with gentle claws de-sheathing and sheathing themselves alternatingly.

With slow blinks and a stifled yawn every now and again, Piérre was happy enough to continue watching, listening... just in case someone needed him for whatever reason.

That didn't prevent him, of course, from being a bit of a 'security' person, making sure that things didn't get too out of hand. You know, children running with scissors or anything. Don't get him wrong, Piérre was the first to advocate for the proper use of chaos, and in other situations he would have been very happy to oblige such a hedonistic instinct if so inspired to act upon it... but this was the library. This was the library, and Piérre had gotten certain vibes if one would that the librarian was not one to take any nonsense. The testing of the man's patience would have to come at some other time, Piérre was sure, but today was not the day for it--especially when he was supposed to be on his "best" behavior.

He continued to watch the young students scuttle about like ants, with the few elder students among them like strange guard ants to their worker counterparts... with those gleamingly curious green eyes...

Sunday, the morning's coming once more. Sere had just woke up from her overnight sleep. She took a deep breath, sat cross-legged, put her gaze straight ahead but thoughts wandered far away... too far from where she is now. Today is one week after Easter and the only child of the Nade family decided to stay at the castle rather than going home and spend the Easter with her family. Sere doesn't regret her decision because she is indeed intentionally limit the contact with her family recently, but for the reason she doesn't know, there's a slight pain like a pinch deep inside her heart. You're just being emotional, Sere. It must be because of the Easter holidays. This holidays are lasted too long. Hold your feelings and use your logic.

Sere got up from her bed and got ready in no time. She put on the Gryffindor robe before her feet led her out to her favorite place in Hogwarts: Library. Time to bring back my logic.

Sunday, when the Easter holiday is almost over, Sere could feel the spring breeze on her face. The girl heard about the event held by the librarian in collaboration with the new astronomy professors, Mateo Sáez and Gargamel Starwise, while reading in the library a few days ago. At that time the library was still quite quiet because -clearly- not that many people chose to stay at Hogwarts during the Easter. AstroFair is the name of the event. Sere feels that she is not that bad at writing essay actually, but she's not very much into writing. She just likes reading. It is just because this all related to astronomy, and I've read a lot of things about astronomy, plus I'm bored and I don't know what else to do on this near-end holiday. There's no harm in joining AstroFair, right?

As that thought went by, Sere entered the library. "Whoa!" Her mouth formed an 'O' because there are al lot more event participants than she had imagined, "When are they all returning to Hogwarts? Ah, nevermind... it looks like I'm quite late."

Sunday, the library filled with simple astrological decorations enchanted to float on the air. The atmosphere is created quite well. Sere approached the librarian's desk, all the materials for AstroFair were provided there. "I don't know that we are allowed to draw posters too," Sere takes some sheets of paper and a black pen, "I wouldn't choose to draw, tho." Sere has nearly zero talent in art.

Sere is sitting at one of the library tables, right on her favorite position -the table near the fire place- since there are still several empty places there. "Umm... What should I write today?" The British-Korean girl looked up, searching for ideas while observing the astrological decorations floating in the air. There are idle-formed sparkles that seemed to floats irregularly, forming beautiful abstract patterns. "Looks like a scorpion in Scorpio, my zodiac..." Sere muttered.

Sunday, a new beginning, also a new fresh mind that brings up some great ideas easily. "That's it! Constellations and zodiacs!" Sere immediately made a mind map to outline what she wanted to write in the essay. She takes her time in a relaxed manner because she knows that she's still has enough time.

Sere was at a time when she liked astronomy so much. That much so that when she accompanied her parents on a business trip to France, Sere asked the family to visit one of the Space Museum in Paris and she wanted them to left her there instead of let her staying in the hotel. In the end, Sere's parents sent their driver to accompany the daughter from the start, instead of themselves. They said they had to attend some meetings all day long. A quiet sad moment at the start, but Sere really enjoyed the visit afterwards. All the love of astronomy started from her interest in reading about constellations and zodiac signs.

Sunday, it started off pretty good. Sere managed to finish her essay in a few hours. "Didn't expect it to go this smoothly." The Gryffindor girl stands up to submit her essay. Hopefully those who read my essay will also be interested in learning more about the zodiac and enjoy it as much as I do. She looked at her paper that is equipped with pictures of dots and lines that form the constellations for each zodiac. She managed to memorize everything about two or three years ago. Refreshing all these things somehow made her feel quite satisfied.

Finish with the AstroFair, Sere directly stepped into the shelves. "That was much more fun than I expected. Now... which book should I read to fill up the rest of the Sunday?"

Minnie saw that the girl had helped herself and walked over to Linda, shrugging and unsure what they could do. She decided to make a poster just for fun, and walked over there. "Oh, um...perhaps we could do a...fun essay about how cool astronomy is?" Minnie shrugged again and sat down to make a poster, glancing over at Kaitlyn. Her heart immediately jumped and she looked down, blushing. It was getting quite bad, her crush.

Starting to make her poster about the upcoming eclipse, she brainstormed about what the interns could do. She couldn't come up with anything then, but kept thinking while she did her poster. Finishing the pencil sketch, she grabbed some colored pencils and colored her drawing, admiring the background color she made it. Once she had finished, she set it down and stood up, moving over to Quinn while still thinking about the whole intern thing.

"Hello Quinn...and funny you should say that...I might have gotten a detention for trying to get into the restricted section of the library using magic to do it and probably some other less obvious and much more boring rules." She smiled and then walked over to Kaitlyn, immediately blushing.

"Hey Kaitlyn...sorry I left so quickly. I had to help a student. Do you need help with anything?" She so wanted the answer to be yes, but kept the thoughts to herself, waiting for her crush to reply.

━━━━━━━ ♔ ━━━━━━━━
When Guinevere walked into the Library one day to catch up on reading her textbooks for history, the first thing she noticed was that the room got a makeover. Decorations of stars and planets floated around, similar to the candles in the Great Hall, and the librarian's desk was also stacked up with papers, looking more full than usual. She walked closer, intruiged, and saw poster-making supplies along with instructions for what seemed like a science fair, but for astronomy. It was quite interesting, and astronomy was one of her less touched-on interest, so it seemed worthwhile to give it a shot. She also vaguely remembered their professor mentioning something about a poster-making fair in the library, but she hadn't paid much attention then, since she was busy trying to not fall asleep and find the constellation she was looking for through the telescope at the same time.
She took a better look at the instructions, and decided to go back to her dorm to get some paper and her astronomy textbook for reference. Doing the poster sounded a lot more fun than reading random texts for history, no offense, so obviously she was going to choose the fun and chill option. She liked how the project was low stakes and wasn't even part of their grade! And even if her poster turned out trashy, that was fine because she still learned stuff. When she got back to her dorm, she dug through her desk to look for her materials, and found a stack of barely crinkly cardstock, regular note paper, and her favorite pen. Guin found it weird how her handwriting changed depending on what writing utensil she used. Quills were cool and fancy, but when it came to functionality, she definitely prefered using pens a lot more. Plus, she didn't need to carry around an inkpot that could potentially spill everywhere.
She shoved everything in her bag, and walked over to her shelf to get her textbook. She wasn't quite sure of what to research just yet, so she decided to flip through the book a bit while walking back up to the library. She could only hope that she didn't accidentally take one too many steps off the wrong moving staircase and fall to her death. That wouldn't be fun. Anyways. The table of contents proved not enough to find her a topic she was interested in. By the time she realized that her textbook would be of no help to her, she was already almost at the doors of the library.
Guin returned to the seat she sat at minutes earlier, but found it occupied by someone else already, so she looked around for somewhere else to sit, and saw an open table near a window. She placed her things on the table, and went off to the astronomy section of the library shelves. Tilting her head sideways 90 degrees to look at the titles and giving herself a neck cramp, she walked through what she thought was at least fifty titles until she found the one. The title was simple: Exoplanets in a Nutshell. She cracked her neck, which was way louder than she intended it to be, and slid the book off the shelf. Flipping through the pages, she decided that she would make an essay/poster on this. She went back to her seat and started reading, and after some quick notes, she was ready to start writing.

Exoplanets: Kepler 186F
by G. Russetwood

The word exoplanet comes from the Greek word exo, meaning outer or outside and -planet. The definition of it is a planet outside our solar system (the Milky Way). It can also be referred to as an extrasolar planet, and the first recognized discovery of them was in 1992.
We can live on our floating rock of a planet because it is in the habitable zone of a star, our sun. This is the area where it is not too far away from the star, so our planet can sustain life and not freeze, and also not too close, or else we would burn up. Have you ever wondered if there are any other planets in the habitable zone that could be a possibility for life? Well look no further. Kepler 186f is an exoplanet orbiting the red dwarf Kepler 186, is approximately the same size as Earth, and is likely to be rocky, just like our floating rock.
A year on Kepler 186f would be only 130 days, and is closer to the edge of the habitable zone than Earth is. The exoplanet also recieves less light and energy from Kepler 186, so the brightness during noon would be similar to the brightness an hour or so before sunset on Earth.

After maybe two hand cramps and a couple of crumpled up rough drafts, she was done. Gorgeous. She handed the poster in to the librarian's table, and went to clean up. She placed the book where she got it, and shoved everything back in her bag. She pushed her chair in, which made a shrill squeak against the floor that made her cringe, she left the library. Although this wasn't what she had planned on doing, she was still rather productive today, and that was what counted.

Della spent a lot of time in the library—at that time was only increasing with her workload. With her third year came even more classes, even more research, and even more reading. The library was popular, but it still provided a quiet haven for bookish loners.

So it was a shock when Della entered the library to find it abuzz with students, shimmering stars, and floating planets. At first, she was upset—she was looking forward to her usual dreary Sunday afternoon homework procrastination within the stacks. There were a few books in the dragon section she particularly wanted to get sidetracked by. She almost turned on her heel and walked the other way. Whenever there were too many students in one room, it meant trouble at Hogwarts.

But she took a closer look at the decor and saw that the librarian, Mateo, seemed to be leading the activity. Oh, it was just an astronomy study group thing. Della could remember hearing something about that, but, of course, she didn't jot it down in her unused planner. If it was broom racing practice, it usually didn't stick too much in her memory.

Knowing that the dragon distractions and her actual homework could wait until later, she decided to join the festivities. Taking it in properly, she thought Mateo had done a wonderful job transforming the library into something more magical; in addition, to the floating books that were the usual, the floating astrological symbols made it feel like they were truly afloat in space.

Starting to feel the interstellar inspiration take root, Della read through the instructions. They were supposed to do some research on an astronomy topic of their choice, and their work would be displayed in the library for the month. At first, Della's mind jumped to the constellation of Ophiuchus, the "serpent-bearer." She could find out more about him, but she also had a creeping paranoia that she couldn't do too many snake-related things—people might start to be on to her. No, Ophiuchus would be a procrastination project for another day.

She started to flip mindlessly through an astrology book left on one of the tables. Nearby to Ophiuchus was Sagittarius, Della's astrological sign. Looking at the dots scattered across the inky blackness, she thought about how really constellations could be anything—it was all based on the imagination of those who first looked at them. Now that was an idea!

Della rushed off to different parts of the stacks—she selected books from the histories of various cultures, including a hefty tome on Chinese astrology. Lugging her stack of books back to the table, she set to work. She was usually more of a visual person, but the new facts and figures were filling her head, as she flipped furiously through pages and scribbled on her parchment.

Homework was always more fun when it was optional and self-imposed. It might have been ironic that Della came here to do her not-so-optional work but was putting so much effort into this astronomy project she had just found out about. But that irony was lost on her just as she was lost in the essay in front of her.
The Many Sightings of Sagittarius

Sagittarius in Western astronomy and astrology is the constellation that resembles an image of a centaur with a bow and arrow. It is also referred to as "the archer." Much of its mythology as we know it today stems back to the Ancient Greek period. However, the Ancient Greeks might have borrowed the constellation from the even older Sumerians. The Sumerians thought the constellation resembled their god Pabilsaĝ, who was an archer. Pabilsaĝ was also a judge and warrior. The Babylonians saw a centaur in the same spot as well—a god named Nergal. Nergal somewhat resembled a centaur holding a bow but also had more embellished elements like wings and a scorpion stinger. Nergal was a seen as bad omen: one who would bring death.

Across the world, the Chinese were seeing shapes in the same stars. For them, Sagittarius was two different characters: the Azure Dragon and the Black Tortoise. Both of these are part of the four constellations that make up the cardinal directions, seasons, and times of day. The Azure Dragon represents east, spring, and dawn, while the Black Tortoise represents north, winter, and midnight.

A section of Sagittarius is also known as "the teacup." The Teacup is an asterism, which is any image that can be seen in a group of stars. There are only 88 official constellations, but asterisms are up to the eye of the beholder. The Teacup's spout looks like it's pouring out the Milky Way.
Once the words were written, Della rolled the parchment up and placed it with the other completed projects. The afternoon light that had been peeking through the windows was now dimmed, and her stomach started to growl marking dinner time. Oh well, her homework would have to wait until another day. She carefully returned all of the books that were now strewn around her table, but, on a second thought, she decided to check out the one on Chinese astrology for a bit of bedtime reading.

“Oh, nice!” Kaitlyn smiled brightly, as Emily showed her the first paragraph of her essay. She made it her business to not judge how her fellow classmates were. She liked hanging out with Emily, and she’d likely be supportive of her friend.

As Kaitlyn returned to her seat with her finished essay, poster, and poem, she noticed Linda enter the library for this constellation errand. It appeared that she was passing out badges to the other Astronomy Interns. ‘That does not surprise me, Linda is very smart.’ She smiled brightly at the second-year Gryffindor. “Hi Linda,” she greeted her with a wave.

Kaitlyn’s cheeks burned red when Minnie walked back over to her, a smile forming on her lips. “Hi Minnie,” she greeted her shyly. “Um no … not really. No,” she replied, sounding more like she was willing herself to not need help. She quickly let her blue eyes roam the room for a few seconds, noting the other Astronomy Interns.

“Um, if I’m not keeping you from what you’re supposed to be doing, may I ask you to read my poem? Um, if you want to, that is. I understand if you don’t want to …” Kaitlyn moved her poem on Sagittarius next to where Minnie was standing by the table. “And, um, if you do read it … may I know your opinion of it?” she asked, her blue eyes dropping to the table. ‘I hope I didn’t mess that up,’ she thought.

Oh Sagittarius!
A magical centaur.
With your bow and arrow,
Ready to foretell the future,
Using the moon and Astronomy as your guide.
Hiding out in the Forbidden Forest.

Greek Mythology resonates, showing the great centaur,
as a healer and having high intelligence.
Just like with magic, a bridge between Heaven and Earth.

Being born under this Zodiac, I’m supposed to have various traits.
Passion, curiosity, intensity, adaptability, and flexibility.
Wanderlust and always on the lookout for an adventure.
Wielders of stories, entertainment, and creativity.
With the good, there is always some bad.
Bluntness, brutal honesty, misunderstanding.

While some of these traits match me.
And some, more than others.
There are some I don’t see yet.
Maybe not even at all.
But, with the bow and arrow asterism,
may I let it guide me,
In life, in happiness, in health, and in love.
