Matilde leaned forward on her broom, and she zoomed forward. She was going fast- it was exhilarating. The first part of the track was thorns. She couldn’t quite manage to get around them, and she felt them dig into her skin. It hurt, and she appeared to be bleeding, but it wasn’t too bad.

The next part was winds. Matilde griped her broom hard, and sped through them. Suddenly she saw a flash of green. Was that Quinn? She seemed to have cast the sparks charm at the Slytherin girl. Matilde hadn’t yet thought about whether she should try any spells. She ran through a list in her head. She didn’t want to hurt any of her friends, or anyone else for that matter, but it was just a game, right?

Matilde continued on, passing Quinn and the Slytherin. Faster, still, and she zipped past Minnie and the older boy. Wait, did that mean she was in the lead? She felt a rush of excitement. She almost didn’t notice the trees ahead. Maybe it was because of her distraction, or maybe her novice status at the sport, Matilde knocked right into multiple trees. Wham! Again and again. She managed to stay on her broom, but her body hurt all over as she emerged. Maybe she shouldn’t get too cocky.

The appearance of many more snowflake joining the sky was not a sight Alyssea was expecting. It wasn't a spell that was commonly used in the official races, but in a free-for-all, you might as well expect the unexpected. However, the extra chill did not look to be helpful to anyone as they held their brooms firmly and without a single shiver.

But despite their resistance to the extra cold, someone did remain frozen in their tracks. Was it stage fright? Or, well, broom fright? Alyssea wasn't sure what the word was for people who got scared but weren't on a proper theatre stage. One thing Alyssea could be sure about, however, was that she hoped the girl didn't get hypothermia already.

A few people picked up the pace while Matilde opted to slow down. Now the distance wasn't so pronounced. Not only that, it was Pericles on Matilde's tail! It would be pretty intimidating to see a senior fly right behind you, unscathed and unbothered by everything on the track while you were taking a few hits. Fresh out of the woods, Quinn looked as if she'd taken some nasty hits from the trees.

But even with Matilde in the lead, Alyssea only crossed her arms in anticipation. Maybe Quinn had a faster broom that could outpace both Pericles and Matilde. Or someone would get flung off their broom. As many senior racers liked to say, this half-way point was still anybody's race.

	Pericles was getting a taste for racing. One could cast, unlike in Quidditch, and the pace of things was far faster than in Duelling. The quicker one flew, the higher their chances of striking an obstacle, so one had to choose sacrificing speed for evasion or vice versa. As a recently accomplished animagus, he spent an awful lot of time coasting around as an eagle. He liked to think that familiarity with flight helped him maneuver a broom too. As a witch in his wake chilled the air with Nix Facitur, Peri hugged tighter to the Silver Arrow, gripping it with one hand while the other tugged his scarf over his mouth. As he wove through the trees and wind whipped in his ears, he heard the competition bumping into the trunks behind him. From what he could determine, the girl who had passed him was looking worse for wear, too; duellists had a knack for gauging the status of opponents. In fact, as far as Pericles could conclude, the little witch at the front looked like she could be blown away by a single spell. His lips curved into a contemplative frown. After mulling matters over, the Ravenclaw drew his wand and took aim, eyes narrow beneath those goggles....

Quinn bit back a yell as Minnie raised her wand. Snow began to fall from the sky and Quinn shivered making sure that her hands stayed tight onto her broom. She gave Minnie a glare that said things only her and Quinn would understand.
"You idiot! You could have made me fall off my broom!" She muttered quietly to Minnie as she passed her. Quinn felt herself moving past Minnie and was aware of the boy in front of her drawing his wand. Quinn hoped she wasn't the target as she wasn't sure how much more damage to herself she could take. The trees had raked her arms and legs and she could feel the bleeding intenser then before. Quinn leaned forward on her broom realizing that maybe the best way to win this race was speed. Not just speed, Quinn knew you had to be sly... Cheeting wasn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it was more of a nessicary thing that happened every so often. Quinn just really didn't want to be caught. Maybe she would let Minnie cheat first before she did anything. That might work. Quinn smiled as she urged her broom to go faster. She was having fun even though her arms hurt really bad.

After the fiasco with those first trees, Matilde had decided it was in her best interest to slow down a bit. Her speed was definitely affecting her ability to avoid obstacles. She hopefully had enough of a lead. She certainly couldn’t win if she were too injured to fly!

Matilde looked quickly over her shoulder to see what was happening behind her. Minnie appeared to have cast the nix facitur spell. Matilde was glad she was too far way away to feel the affects of the snow.

Matilde braced herself as she went through a second bout of trees. This time she did much better, only hitting one.

At this point, Matilde was feeling pretty exhausted, but she continued to push forward, energized by still being ahead. But- maybe not for long. Again she glanced behind and saw the older boy coming up right behind her. Her heart leapt into her throat as she realized he was pointing his wand right at her. What should she do? She didn’t have much time to think. She decided to trust her instincts. It was her first race, and not even an official one at that. She had nothing to lose. Matilde did the only thing she could think of. She pointed her own wand right back at him.

Minnie smiled as her spell worked, although she was going behind and needed to speed up. The cold hadn't hurt her, but it had nearly hurt Quinn, which was slightly stupid of her. But now she was falling behind and needed to fly much faster than the others. Perhaps her snowball trick might work, but it could fail and accidentally hit Quinn instead of that boy, which she couldn't risk. She saw the boy ahead of her narrow his eyes and raise his wand and hoped it wasn't meant for her. Hmm...what should I do now? I could hit the boy with a spell...but that would be really bad. He would target me and it might now work...If I'm really falling behind I could just use incendio... Minnie shook her head, getting back in the game. All she needed to do was fly really really fast...and then maybe dodge that guy. She looked as Matilde pointed her wand at the older boy, and she decided that perhaps she was safe for now and didn't need to cheat yet. So she flew on hoping not to get caught in the crossfire. In all seriousness, Alyssea could only giggle as Matilde tried to target Pericles. Alyssea, herself, had duelled one senior by the name of Alan Vanes and miserably failed. God only knows what was happening during that duel because none of her team's spells hit for the entirety of the duel, her Dancing Feet Spell backfired, and she got encased in a bubble. Incredible.

Sure, racers had some pretty good luck when it came to going up against their upperclassmen, such as that Slytherin girl who managed to blatch George in the final rounds. Crazy luck. But even on a broom, you can't beat a duellist's instincts, can you?

Having Elisa frozen at the back of the pack gave her déjà vu from the winter races. While she did turn her focus to the groups at the front of the race, she couldn't help but wonder if it was hypothermia all over again. At least Elisa was still on her broom and not wallowing in water.

Meanwhile, Matilde was still leading and Pericles was still close behind, but her guess of Quinn catching right up came true. Looking between them and the finish line, Alyssea clapped. "Less than half-way to go! Woo!"

A grin crept onto her face as the sound of birds echoed through the air. While these birds weren't as scary as the Whomping Willow or a Boggart, even, they had their own charm. Don't forget the vines right before the finish line, either.

	When the witch pointed her wand at Pericles, she would glimpse a rare, somewhat disconcerting sight: he grinned. It was a lopsided thing, all teeth and wry amusement. The eagle kept his wand aloft as he leaned into a barrel roll, tumbling out of her spell's path before firing one back. It might come as some surprise that he elected to cast a healing spell. In part the choice could be credited to his repute of amiability, though the act was just as much benevolent as it was strategic. He knew the odds were already stacked. It would make for worse practice if he lost any of his opponents. Peri wasn't at all insulted by the choice to cast out of self-preservation: it was bold of her, a reckless yet admirable trait to see from a first year. As he continued to gain on her, he cupped a hand around his mouth, hollering over the howling wind: "Be careful where you point that." In all their maneuvering, yet another student passed him by. Pericles quirked a frown, realizing he wasn't exactly doing himself any favors by pulling punches, at least as far as speed went. He had been untouched by thorns, unmoved by the winds, and navigated the trees with ease. There was no reason to keep holding back. While winning was less significant than accruing experience, some prideful portion of his teenage brain didn't want it getting around that he'd lost a race to a gaggle of first-years. He made up his mind with a frown of resolve, leaning hard into his flight.

Quinn felt a spell shoot passed her as Matilde waved her wand. Quinn looked behind her as nobody got hit. The boy in front of her taunted Matilde.
"Imagine being beat by a little firstie!" Quinn taunted at the boy. Quinn hoped it wasn't a bad move. As Quinn looked at Matilde as they where neck in neck. One good shove would make her fly away. Maybe one good shove was all Quinn needed... Quinn readied herself on her broom for what she was about to do. Cheeting smeeting! Quinn thought. Then she realized that Minnie had played a fair game all game. The boy behind her-Pericles was it?- had leaned forward on his broom. Quinn knew her broom could go faster but it would make it a lot harder to steer. He looked like he could doge anything she threw at him. A spell to a rock. Quinn noticed Elisa straying behind. Quinn gritted her teeth as she looked ahead of her. She saw what looked like a bird flying or maybe multiple. Maybe a burst of speed would help her. Or a burst of fire? Or maybe just a burst onto a person. Quinn stole another glace at Matilde. She looked stronger then her and she really didn't want to hit her friend to the ground. But sometimes sacrifices must be made... Quinn sucked in a breath as she urged her broom forward.

Minnie winced as she went into the trees and then frowned. Quinn and Matilde were ahead of her, as well as the older boy. While she was happy for Quinn, she needed to get up ahead with them. So she needed to either take one of them out or fly so fast that she hit the trees or other obstacles. It was a bit of a dilemma, and she really wanted to win so it wasn't going well. She took out her wand and pointed it at Matilde before reconsidering and putting it away. She needed to speed, up, not attack her opponents. Her choices were not great at the moment. All she really had left to do was cheat, a concept she knew plenty about. Hmm...that boy seems...and Quinn...wait, is she about to? I should most likely save her if the boy is about to do anything, considering we...yeah...maybe I'll do that. Minnie thought very hard about her choices, not exactly wanting to get kicked out of the game, but not wanting to lose. If she tried the fire spell, Quinn might get caught in the crossfire. Perhaps she should do another spell. Indecision made her uncomfortable, as she wasn't used to not knowing what to do. As she thought about it for a little more, an idea came to her head and she knew what to do. She lifted her wand and flew-fast.
