Walking down to the lake, Emile hadn't really known exactly where he was going. He was kind of just wandering around, and somehow got here. He was standing near the edge of the lake, watching the sky and the water. Just trying to embrace it all. It was the kind of moment that made you want to do yoga, but of course he wouldn't do that out of embarrassment.

When he knew where he was, Emile decided his goal was to see some merpeople or the Giant Squid. He had heard many things about the inhabitants of the Great Lake, and since he was curious, he wanted to see them. He wanted to see how they looked, how they acted. He had read about merpeople and the squid in books from the library, or heard stories from his grandparents, but he always thought the best way to learn was to do it hands-on. Maybe this was why he enjoyed charms so much, but that was besides the point.

As he walked closer to the edge of the lake, he could see more clearly how the water looked. It looked quite murky, almost black. You couldn't really see to the bottom. This probably was why it was also known as the Black Lake. He wrote about how the water looked in his notebook and then slipped it back into the pocket of his robes. Even so, the landscape was still breathtaking. The lake was surrounded by large, green mountains, and it was somewhat foggy today. It looked mystical, and Emile felt like it was something you could really only see in all it's glory at Hogwarts. Even after being at the school for so long, it still felt magical, which was great for him.

In the back of him, he heard some people walking, probably who were students. Then he thought about how he was alone looking at this beautiful lake. It made him kind of blue, and he tilted his head and sighed. He scribbled those feelings in his notebook too. He threw a rock into the water and watched it sink. "I've got to go get some social interaction." He decided, then started to walk back to the castle. In the act of doing so, without even getting five steps, he tripped on a rock and fell backwards into the water. "Yikes. That is cold!" He said, getting a chill down his spine. He had heard how cold the lake was, but some had been able to swim in it without getting too cold. Maybe he was just weak. He got out of the water, this time taking care not to trip again. He didn't feel like falling back into the water again. When he got out, he was soaking wet. His hair, his robes, his clothing. And his journal. Immediately he took it out of his pocket and checked the pages. Thank heavens! The ink hadn't been ruined. He sighed relief, then set it on a nearby rock to dry off.

He took off his robes and socks, and set them down on the rock as well. He decided he would wait here until he was dry enough to walk back into the castle without people giving him strange looks. He hoped that no one had seen him be the clumsy person he is, and sat on the ground, drying off.

And one, and two, and three, and four!

Fingers splayed outward as a small hand tickled the underside of an orange tabby cats chin. Holding out a small treat in his other palm, Warren's eyes twinkled with mirth as he watched the cat sit once more upon command, the petite feline nipping at his fingers for the tuna treat. Strangely enough, the boy seemed perplexed by the cats behavior.

"Stunning, stranger. You're a lucky boy to have such a nice owner! Heck, you even know how to sit," he cooed, his finger scratching at the small spot behind the cats ears. It let out a long mewl at this and turned its tail in the air. With a parting twirl of its tail the feline began to paw through the grass, a small jingle with each step as its bell like collar rang.

Huffing and brushing his hands free of crumbs, Warren tilted his head and looked upward toward the cloudy skies with a smile. One day, he mused thoughtfully, one day I'll have my own little fuzzy friend. It was no surprise that the cat wasn't his, but the young Slyhtherin seemed to have a knack for getting along with less than human creatures. They were his favorite things to talk to, to play with, and to take cozy naps on leather couches with. A faithful companion who sought friendship in unlikely ways that made his heart warm at the thought of owning a kitten, a rat, or an owl.

Truth be told he'd prefer a rat, if he had the choice that is.

Warren settled on pushing for a bit more adventure before returning to his studies. As much as the young boy loved to cram his nose into the worn pages of ancient texts, there was a part of him that yearned to explore and experience Hogwarts for what it was, not merely for what he'd come for. However, a mature part of him understood that this was only his first year of attending the school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There would be plenty of time come the next six more years for him to explore every nook, cranny, and crevice...

... but not every day would have an open door.

Turning on his heel, Warren took off in a brisk walk down a winding cobble path. His robe fluttered at his feet, his hands hidden beneath long black sleeves as he turned his head in circles to observe the trees that covered the area. The path wound through a section of woods for students to quietly traverse, and it allowed for a perfect viewing of the black lake that circled school grounds.

Pausing in his walk, Warren looked out over the hill and toward the lakes shore that glimmered in the dull fog. A grin pressed on his cheeks, and he gripped at his robe as he watched a few fish nip at the surface from afar. He was so caught up on the bubbles that occasionally rose that when a loud splash caught his ears he nearly jumped out of his skin!

Stumbling on his own two feet, Warren shimmied his way down the hill beside the pathway and stepped into the soggy grass that decorated the edges of the lake. He tilted his head to the side, a single lock of stark white hair falling beside his glasses. He pushed the pesky strand behind his ear to hide it behind the unruly waves of blonde, and he took careful steps forward.

"Pardon me," he called out, his voice turning into a slight grunt as he stepped over a branch and grabbed at his robes to avoid getting mud all over them.

Turning toward Emile, he flashed the soaked boy a smile and waved a spirited hand in the air. Laughing, he says in a calm voice, "Fancy a swim? Innit a touch too cold to go around tacking a crack at the rules? Also, last I checked, apparently swimming isn't common practice in this lake."

Jokes aside, Warren moved over and eyed Emile thoughtfully. As if a light bulb had popped up over his head, the boy held up a finger before taking the robe that settled over his body and began to take it off. He loosened the adjustable strings on the inside so that the robe would come undone, and he pulled it off over his head, his green stripped tie nearly following in pursuit.

Standing in his tanned dress pants and white long sleeved button down, he adjusts his collar and holds out the cozy robe to Emile. Funnily enough, the young Slytherin had a slight embarrassed chuckle escape him as he looked up at Emile.

"I'm... Well, as you can see, you're quite a bit taller than myself, but I'd prefer my fellow classmate didn't freeze to death. Please," he held out the robe and smiled, "Bundle up! Also, pleasantries are in order. My name's Warren Kirkland, but you can call me War if you'd like."

"And so he was reading the story as if it were a spell and the words of it, spoken aloud, could make magic happen.”

Emile's ears perked up when he heard footsteps approaching. As of now, he looked like a depressed, gray cloud. His jet black hair was drooping at his sides and it looked even more black now that it was wet. It looked like a mop and had lost it's usual fluffiness during the fall. His usually sparkling green eyes also looked a bit like fish eyes. Moreover, his pale skin really sold the deal. He was kind of cold, he was wet, and he wasn't feeling too happy. Hearing someone approach, he braced himself for the worst. He would probably be made fun of, or worse. He sighed. Here was where he Hogwarts social life ended. At least he would have something to write about for his novel.

He was just being overly dramatic, but this was the mind of a child with too eccentric authors for parents who usually were overly dramatic themselves. You couldn't blame him, but he also needed to find a way to overcome things like that and actually solve the issue at hand. Maybe someone might think he was crazy or cool for "taking a swim" in the lake? Even though he had actually just fallen in. He sighed, wringing out some extra water from his shirt and pants. He shook off his head a bit, little droplets of water flying everywhere. He then sat and looked out over the lake, wondering if the person would see him.

"Pardon me," a voice said from behind him. His head whipped around to spot a Slytherin. He could tell from his robes. Emile's breathed in quickly and nervously smiled. Anyone could tell the smile was obviously nervous, but he hoped that it didn't seem that way.  "Fancy a swim? Innit a touch too cold to go around tacking a crack at the rules? Also, last I checked, apparently swimming isn't common practice in this lake." The boy said, giving Emile a big smile.

All of Emile's hope immediately returned. This boy didn't know how wonderful it was to hear a joke, even if it was about him, after he had just fallen into a lake and was not feeling very happy. He thanked his stars and then smiled at Warren. It was a relieved smile. "Yeah, I was wondering if I might meet the squid. It was extremely cold though." Emile answered jokingly. He wasn't quite sure if the Slytherin could tell he had fallen in, but Emile didn't intend to tell him if he didn't know. He was quite embarrassed. Emile could get embarrassed very easily. He thought that someone was always looking at him..even if they weren't. He was self conscious and worried most of the time. He greatly appreciated banter from the Slytherin.

Suddenly, it looked like the boy in front of him had an idea. Emile watched as he took off his robe and held it out to him. "I'm... Well, as you can see, you're quite a bit taller than myself, but I'd prefer my fellow classmate didn't freeze to death. Please, bundle up!" He said with a smile. It was true. He was a bit smaller than him, but Emile was desperate to stop shivering at this point.

"Are you sure? I don't want to take it if you're going to be cold too. Better only 1 than 2, right?" Emile said with a nod.  His face looked like he was fighting with himself. To take the robes, or not to take the robes. "Well.." Emile said, looking at his shivering arms, "I owe you a favor now." Emile said, taking the robes gratefully. He slipped it over his head, immediately feeling a lot better having something dry on.  He felt his shoulders relax a bit, and his arms stopped shivering a lot less than they had been before. Even if his clothes underneath were wet, and even if the robes were a bit small, he genuinely did feel a lot better. "Thank you. Really." He said, smiling brightly.

"Also, pleasantries are in order. My name's Warren Kirkland, but you can call me War if you'd like." He said. Emile decided he would use the nickname. Whenever he had a chance to, it made him feel like he knew the person better, even if he didn't really. It also made him feel a bit more casual, so why not?

"Well, it's lovely to meet you, War." He said. "I'm Emile Yorke. I don't have any nicknames, so you can call me whatever." Emile said with a smile. "What brought you out to the lake?" He asked, trying to make conversation. Maybe Warren had been exploring like Emile?

"A dip for a tickle with Mister Squiddly, ah? I don't blame you! I've fiddled with the thought myself, but fortunately I haven't the foggiest idea how to go about having a one on one with Hogwarts very own connoisseur of the black waters, if you will," Warren's riddling words seemed to play further on the now running gag of Emile taking a dip for the brief hopes of meeting eye to tentacle with the black lakes most prominent resident. His smile never seemed to fade as he helped Emile toggle the robe up over his shoulder, and with a finally pat to the shoulder the young Slythern took a few steps back and adjusted his glasses to get a good eye on the slippery Gryffindor.

The other student showed great concern over his well being, too, and though it warmed the petite boys heart to know that there were those out there that thought beyond studies and themselves, Warren had to shake his head and tug at the collar of his sleeve. The air was biting, chilly even, but the young Wizard merely dipped the glossy tip of his shoe to the grass and bowed his head in a respectful manner.

"Thing one and thing two were a hell've'a lot more successful when they thought together, but luckily for us we're students in Hogwarts and not mythical bouncy boys in footy pajamas," he waggled his finger in the air and laughed as he fastened his sleeves button and smiled. Hands propped themselves on the belt that looped through his sleek black dress pants, and he cocked a blonde brow upward.

Finger in the air, he said wittily, "A favor is for those who have deeds to be done. Actually, I don't have anything for you to do! I would say 'don't sweat it', but as it were I'd prefer you sweat and warm yourself. There's nothing fuzzy and cute about a Wizard with the sniffles."

Had Emile shown any signs of confusion, curiousness, or guarded behavior, Warren broke through those walls with his blinding grin and selective sight. The spunky boy had a way with getting in the nitty gritty fun bits with those around him, and Emile was no different. Letting out a string of hums, Warren swung his arms from side to side as Emile introduced himself. Emile Yorke, he noted.

"Brought me out here? On this dreary day," he started to answer Emile's inquire, but paused and tucked a stray lock of stark white hair behind his oddly shaped ear before continuing with a sigh, "Well, I'll be honest with you, Emile. I may or may not have gotten a touch distracted by a cute cat. She was precious and I always carry around some sort of treat for pets! Always! I have hopes of one day finding a rat, but... Alas, 'tis not in my near future. Anyway, to make a long story short, I went sight seeing on the forest path and heard a commotion, you, and figured I'd check it out."

He wiggled his finger in the air and pointed at the lake and then toward the wet clothing laid out behind Emile. His lips turned slightly right, and he waggled a brow while eyeing Emile as he said, "How's about you, mythical beast? What really happened? I'm dying to know what's in that book, too. Looks awful important."

As he said that last bit, Warren leaned over and eyed the wet pages that were scrawled with ink. What on earth...?

"And so he was reading the story as if it were a spell and the words of it, spoken aloud, could make magic happen.”

"A dip for a tickle with Mister Squiddly, ah? I don't blame you! I've fiddled with the thought myself, but fortunately I haven't the foggiest idea how to go about having a one on one with Hogwarts very own connoisseur of the black waters, if you will," Warren said, looking at the Gryffindor. Emile smiled and laughed a bit. "Really though." Emile said, suddenly not joking anymore. "Imagine if we could actually see or meet the squid..how wonderful would that be? I heard he likes toast." Emile said, starting to ramble a bit. Emile's imagination was like a vast field filled with random boxes that were also full of other random things. The boxes had doors leading to other places, and random pieces of food or writings. The short version of that? His imagination was definitely one that reflected him being the child of two authors. "Sorry for rambling." Emile apologized, laughing weakly.  "But again, what a wonderful story that would be!" On instinct, Emile put his hands into his pockets, and searched for his notebook to write that down in, only to remember 1. It wasn't his robes he was wearing, and 2. His notebook was still wet. He sighed. He hoped he would remember that later.

Emile laughed at Warrens statement about thing 1 and thing 2. Even though he had grown up in a wizarding community, Dr. Seuss was one of his favorite authors as a child.

"A favor is for those who have deeds to be done. Actually, I don't have anything for you to do! I would say 'don't sweat it', but as it were I'd prefer you sweat and warm yourself. There's nothing fuzzy and cute about a Wizard with the sniffles." Warren then said, in regards to Emile saying he owed him a favor. Warren seemed very much like someone Emile wanted to be friends with. He enjoyed his personality. Emile needed a little spunk in his life sometimes, if that's the right word. Warren seemed to be the best version of spunk in Emile's eyes. "You're very kind, though maybe you've been told that before. I appreciate this, but in the future please tell me if there's anything I can do." Emile said. He was the type of person that always felt like he needed to make it up to someone, even if all they did was give him an extra quill.

Emile pushed his jet black hair out of his eyes, and noticed it was still wet. It wasn't even damp yet. He sighed. Why had he fallen into the cold lake today of all days?

Emile listened as Warren told him about his journey to the lake, and meeting a cat. And also that he wanted a rat. Emile smiled widely. He absolutely loved animals, and any talk of them made him immediately feel all warm and fuzzy. Unless, of course, it was talk about animals dying or being violent. That made him all cold and hard. Anyway, he nodded as his listened, to show that he was actually listening, and not in his dream state, like he could get into sometimes. "Rats are lovely. I don't know why most people think they're so filthy. They can take baths just like any other creature. I also kind of want to get a rat..but I also want a cat or a pgymypuff." Emile said, seeming a bit wistful. He really, really wanted a pet. Maybe he could adopt of fly and name it Hank. He wasn't sure.

Emile watched as Warren pointed his finger at Emile's small leather notebook. "How's about you, mythical beast? What really happened? I'm dying to know what's in that book, too. Looks awful important." Warren said, leaning down and looking at his pages. Emile's eyes widened and he turned red, which was more prominent on his pale face. "Oh goodness, War." He said quickly, and picked up his notebook. Though he was proud of what he had written in his notebook, his handwriting was an absolute disaster..and there were some seemingly strange or stupid things written in his pages. He was usually embarassed to show people, as most thought he was cold or rude for always writing everything down. Because of this, he usually felt nervous whenever someone started to look. No one wants to be told what they've worked so hard on looks stupid. Emile felt like Warren didn't seem to be the type of person to do that, but he was cautious with everyone, and he couldn't help the fact that he felt that way with Warren too.

"I..I don't think you want to look at that." The Gryffindor said quickly. "My handwriting looks like chicken scratch." Emile admitted, setting his notebook on the rock once again so it could resume drying. He looked like he was handling the family's prized jewels as he did this.
