An older Hemlock would surely have a piece of parchment dedicated to keeping track of the pure-blood ecosystem thriving at Hogwarts. Jessamine had once snuck into her older sister’s room to steal a chocolate frog card and instead found her extensive notes on the pure-blood families in London. As they grew older, Jessamine was sure that the list extended in length too, detailing families from all over the country. Jessamine was no such child. Typically hidden away during soirees, she would have preferred to keep the names of other pure-blood families out of her mouth. Alas, it was too difficult to avoid and as the family wanted to start introducing her to high society, she was expected to learn a little more than she wanted to.

When Hogwarts was finally hers to call home, it came as no surprise to Jessamine that she recognized many of the surnames of various pure-blood students. Some families were ministry workers like her parents, others were nobles, a few built their empires as merchants. It was honestly a bit much to keep up with, and at some point she stopped caring about them recalling her own name and matching it up with her behavior. She did want to poke and prod at some of the pure-blood kids in her own year, though, and the perfect opportunity arose on one fine afternoon.

With an acid pop between her lips, Jessamine strolled into the courtyard and her eyes immediately found the telltale brown-blond hair of a Seacrown. First name Klynn, if she remembered correctly. His parents were involved with creatures and plants. Boring stuff to her, admittedly. Without considering what he was doing, she sunk down onto the stone bench he was sitting on and slid closer to him. Removing the acid pop from her mouth, she gave a cheeky smile.

Whatcha doin’?

Klynn came from a family that was rather different to stereotypical pure-blood family. By that, he and his family didn't concern themselves with keeping up with other pure-blood families. Even if they did, Klynn never really concerned himself with other pure-bloods since most of the families he did meet were those stereotypes.

With that said, there was one family he couldn't help but know about due to his Grandparents. They were both traditionalists and kept in touch with affairs of pure-bloods.

So, one day, when he was visiting them, he was told of Hemlock family: a distinguished family until they were "shamed" by the (quote unquote) affair baby.

Now, alone, this would be meaningless, but when you take the fact that Klynn pays attention to everything he's told, and he hears that "Jessamine Hemlock" is in his year at Hogwarts... Well, he knows who he needs know.

Then, much to his shock, she suddenly appears by him as he was reading his favourite book in the courtyard. For what, he doesn't know. But he knows that he doesn't trust the cheeky smile she's giving him.

"Huh? Can I help you, Ms. Jessamine Hemlock? Do you need something?"

The corners of Jessamine’s green-stained lips rose even higher as Klynn dropped her full government name. Sure, they’d been in classes together since the year before, but he said it with such familiarity that Jessamine wondered if he had taken note of her outside of their academics. That would surely be more interesting than him just being good at remembering names. Whatever the case was, she had his attention now. People had been telling her off more often these days, so Jessamine was glad that she could pick at this Seacrown’s brain. How long would it take him to be done with her?

Do I need a reason to say hi to my fellow classmate?” her lips sunk into a pout as she twirled the acid pop between her fingers. “You were just sitting out here all lonely like. Looked like you needed some company, Mr. Klynn Seacrown.” Jessamine slid away from him, back to her own corner of the stone bench, and crossed her legs. “That a story book?” she jutted her chin out at what he was holding. “Is it fun? Y’know, I don’t really like reading. It’s hard for me to visualize things. I think I have aphantasia. Anyways… tell me about the book.

Klynn raised his eyebrow ever so slightly. She came and found him, someone who makes it a point to observe others while staying out of other people's view, simply to ask about his book? Then when he replayed that in his head... crazier things have happened, so he simply shrugged. Then, he turned to her and explained his favourite book. He's read it many times, yet he never found himself growing bored of it. That book being "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde".

"Well, it's about a man who created a potion that split his personality in two: good and evil. However, over time, he begins to grow ever more concerned with his evil side before, finally, taking his own life in despair. It's both sad and it is interesting. Well, at least to me it is"

He believed a brief explanation would be all he needed for the girl to quickly lose interest and move on, after all, it's not like many people he has explained his book to in the past really held much fascination. So, he simply looked back down at his book expecting Jessamine to have taken off next time he looked up.

Sounds… philosophical… and character-driven.” Those were Jessamine’s fancy words for boring, but she wasn’t going to tell Seacrown that. She wanted their interaction to go on for just a little longer before she soured his opinion of her. “And morbid. Are the Seacrowns okay with you reading such dark material?” It was a question to continue the conversation. Of course she knew that pure-blood kids had very creative ways of hiding things if their parents weren’t okay with whatever they were doing. Jessamine had many experiences like that herself, and even though Klynn looked like the quiet sort of good boy, she wouldn’t put it past him.

So is your main man a wizard? You said he created a potion. Sounds like he could give Zygmunt Budge a run for his money. I wonder if any potioneers have actually tried to brew a potion like that… Then again, who would? What’s the benefit of having two personalities?” she inquired, somewhat interested in the plot of the novel. Jessamine considered quietly for a moment before her face lit up with an idea. “Oh! I know! Did he mess up in the brewing stage? Probably with the wand waving, right? I suck at that part. Surely an error with brewing resulted in the split personality outcome.

"Yes, my family are perfectly fine with me reading this book. My aunt got me it from her job, she works at a muggle school, you know? She got me this book before I started Hogwarts and she said she was going to give me a new muggle book before the start of each Hogwarts year."

Klynn then brought his attention to her latter statement. Klynn let out a sigh. "No, he is not a wizard. The book was written after wizards went into hiding, so the author had no knowledge of magic; he was a muggle. The potion - or I suppose 'serum' would be more appropriate - was made by science. Originally, it was not meant to be one that split the two parts. Jekyll did not wish to create a potion to remove the evil parts of his nature. He desired to make a potion that would allow him to express his urges without feeling guilty and without any consequences besmirching his good name. It went wrong and that created a split personality. The good being Dr. Jekyll, the bad being Mr Hyde. He didn't have a wand nor was the waving of one responsible for the mishap."

Klynn then turned to her. "Now, would you like to give it a read?" He didn't know what to think, but he felt he may have been to harsh with his earlier thoughts on the Hemlock girl. Maybe, if he leaned into her enthusiasm, he may get a better idea of who she is.
