Sarah was very frustrated. It had been a very long day at Hogwarts. She had Charms class, Herbology, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Flying. She was exhausted. All Sarah wanted to do was go to sleep in her dorm, but she wasn't able to because of all the homework she was given. She considered putting all her homework off to the side until tomorrow, but Sarah is a big over achiever and knew she should do it now.

Sarah was going to study in the common room but it was very loud in there with other Hufflepuffs talking and laughing, so she decided to study in the library. It was very quiet in the library. There were many other students studying. Almost all the other students had another person as a study buddy. Sarah was hit with loneliness. She wished she had a study buddy.

Sarah sat at a table near the back of the library. She dropped all her stuff on the table and sat down in a chair. She decided to start on Herbology homework first when she realized-

Shoot! I forgot my textbook in my dorm!

Sarah groaned. She got up from her seat and began searching the library for the right textbook. She finally found it in the back of the library.

Here it is!

Sarah went to grab the book but was startled when she saw someone on the other side of the book shelf.

Lately, the library was Lyrra's favourite place to study. It was usually quieter here than in the Gryffindor common room, and the sight of other students silently reading or doing their homework motivated her to do the same. When Lyrra entered the room, she could hear the sounds of scratching quills, turning pages and low whispering. For a few seconds, she stood there in front of the tall doorway, briefly looking around the room. On one side of the room, there were tall shelves packed with books. A familiar sight, but magical nonetheless. Lyrra wondered if there was even a single book that couldn't be found here.

Lyrra walked over the long carpet that stretched next to the bookshelves. It was a bit busier than usual, many students were studying in pairs or small groups. Lyrra preferred to study alone, she had never even tried anything else.

After dropping her parchment, quill, and ink on the nearest empty table, Lyrra headed towards the bookshelves and began searching for the particular book she needed for today's homework. While searching, she stumbled upon a different book: a Herbology textbook, the exact one she had in her own trunk as well. Out of curiousity, she wanted to grab the book. But before she could, it was pulled out from behind.

On the other side of the bookshelf stood a brunette girl with brown eyes. The girl seemed startled by Lyrra's presence.

"Oh," Lyrra wasn't sure how to act. "Sorry, you can have the book. I don't need it."
Out of curiousity, she added: "Are you going to study?"

Oh, Sorry, you can have the book. I don't need it.
Sarah looked up through the bookshelf. There was another girl standing there. She had long dark wavy hair, and rosy cheeks. Sarah's first though was how pretty the girl looked. Sarah wished she could keep her hair down, but she doesn't like it getting in her face, hence why she wears a ponytail all the time.

Are you going to study?

Sarah though for a moment. She was pretty lonely and did want a buddy... After all Herbology class was not her best. She would really need some help on the subject. She had also been really lonely lately.

Um... Yes actually...

Sarah pulled the book and walked to the other side of the bookshelf to meet the girl.

Well, since we both need this Herbology textbook, I'm guessing we both are studying that topic right now? How about we help each other out?

Sarah walked towards the table that she had put all her stuff down on and gestured for the girl to come sit with her, but Sarah paused. What if the girl didn't actually want to sit with her?

Um... You don't have to if you don't want to of course...

Sarah looked up at the girl waited anxiously for the girl's answer.

"Um... You don't have to if you don't want to of course..."

The brunette girl had made her way towards one of the tables and Lyrra followed. She gathered her parchment, quill and ink that she had previously dropped on another table and pulled back a chair next to the girl. Although she hadn't initially planned to work on Herbology, it was something that had to be done anyway. And what would be a better occasion to work on it than now? Lyrra smiled at the girl and sat down on the chair.

"Yes, I was just about to start my Herbology homework," she lied. "Have you started yet on the assignment?" Lyrra neatly arranged her belongings in front of her. The truth was, although Herbology was one of her favourite subjects, she had been meaning to put off this particular assignment until the last possible moment. She would probably only end up working on it the night before it was due, had this girl not asked her to study together. Lyrra usually preferred to work on her least favourite subjects first, to get them out of the way quickly, while filling the annoying late evenings with something she was interested in at least.

Lyrra knew she had seen this girl a few times before. In class, in the hallways, and perhaps in the Great Hall. Although she knew of her being a first year, Lyrra couldn't recall hearing her name, or what house she was in.

"I'm not sure if you know, but I'm Lyrra. I don't recall your name?" she added as an afterthought.

Sarah watched as the girl sat down in the chair.

Yes, I was just about to start my Herbology homework, have you started yet on the assignment?

The girl arranged her belongings in front of here very neatly. This put Sarah at ease. While doing homework, Sarah always liked to keep her area clean and tidy.

No actually, I haven't started it yet. I forgot my textbook in my dorm. But that's alright because now we can start together.

Sarah recognized the girl. Did Sarah have a class with her? She couldn't remember. Maybe she saw this girl in the common room? Wait that's not it. She is wearing Gryffindor robes so she couldn't have been in the Hufflepuff common room. Sarah considered this. She had never actually really sat down and spoke with a Gryffindor.

I'm not sure if you know, but I'm Lyrra. I don't recall your name?

My name is Sarah. It's nice to meet you Lyrra. You have a very pretty name!

Sarah took a stack of papers out of her satchel and placed them on the desk. She flipped through until she found her scroll with her Herbology homework on it.

Are you a first year? Do we have the same assignment?

Sarah looked down at her own paper.

Just warning you, I'm not to great with Herbology. Are you any good? I could sure use some help. Um... if your OK with that.

"My name is Sarah. It's nice to meet you Lyrra. You have a very pretty name!"

Lyrra softly mumbled a "thank you". Sarah was indeed a name she'd heard before, although she didn't know if that had been the same Sarah. It seemed to be a rather common name, and she could see why: it was simple and pretty.

"Are you a first year? Do we have the same assignment?"

"Yes, I am." After looking over at Sarah's parchment, Lyrra nodded. "And I believe we do." She had not yet taken a proper look at her own, but she vaguely remembered what they had covered during the lesson. And seeing as they were both first years, it was highly likely they'd been handed the same homework.

Sarah continued to speak. "Just warning you, I'm not to great with Herbology. Are you any good? I could sure use some help. Um... if your OK with that."

Lyrra nodded once more. Before her arrival at Hogwarts, she had already gotten a slight head start in Herbology. Her mother's garden, which was a heaven for plant nerds, was filled with many magical and non-magical plants. She had taught Lyrra about a lot of them during her gardening lessons. Her mothers passion, Lyrra thought, was most likely what caused her to develop an interest in Herbology and gardening herself as well.

Despite some experience, she had noticed during Herbology lessons that her initial knowledge regarding the subject turned out to be more limited than she realized. What her mother hadn't taught her, for example, were the applications of certain herbs and plants in potions, only how to care for them.

"I'm okay with it," Lyrra was cautious not to come across as too enthusiastic. She did not want Sarah to think it was a particular strength of hers, as she feared Sarah might expect her to know things she didn't. What if the other girl was just being modest herself? She might turn out to know more than Lyrra.

"If you need any help, feel free to ask. I might be able to help you, or I might not. Out of curiousity, what subjects are you good with?" If Sarah had an interest in, say, History of Magic, she might be able to help Lyrra out with that sometime. That is, if they ever were to study together again. Lyrra hated History of Magic, and her grades in that subject were terrible too.

I'm okay with it,

Sarah grinned at Lyrra. She bent down and read the first question:
What is a Gillyweed?
But before she could open her mouth to read the question out loud for her new study buddy, Lyrra asked a question.

If you need any help, feel free to ask. I might be able to help you, or I might not. Out of curiosity, what subjects are you good with?

Sarah thought for a moment. While she loved learning about potions, she wasn't very good at making them. She is good with Charms though!

Um... I think I'm best at Charms. If you ever need help with your Charms homework I can totally help you out with that!

Sarah stopped herself. She didn't want to come across as cocky for full of herself so she added:

I mean, you might not need help of course. You might be really good at charms too!

Sarah decided to continue with her homework. She read the first question out loud.

"What is a Gillyweed?"

Her face went red. She felt stupid because she didn't actually know what a gillyweed is. Sarah thought back to the lesson from that day. She tried to vision her teacher talking about the Gillyweed but she couldn't remember what it was. But she didn't want to ask Lyrra for an answer already!

Oh! I think I know what those are... um... aren't they the thing..... with the spike... or something....

Sarah looked down hoping Lyrra would save her from this embarrassing answer.

"Charms is fun! If I ever need any help with it, you will be the first to know." Lyrra smiled warmly at the girl, then turned to her homework. She dipped her quill in ink and slowly wrote her name on the parchment.

"What is a gillyweed?"

While Lyrra's eyes scanned the paper she heard Sarah read the question out loud. It was the first question on the assignment, and a pretty straightforward one. Her quill scratched while she wrote, careful not to make a mistake. Gillyweed is a plant that gives the person who eats it the ability to breathe underwater, as well as...

"Oh! I think I know what those are... um... aren't they the thing..... with the spike... or something...." Sarah's stuttering interrupted Lyrra's thoughts. She looked up from her work and turned to Sarah, who's face had turned a little red, and who looked down, seemingly embarrassed.

"Um..." Lyrra scratched her head, wondering how she could help the girl out. "Did you pay attention during the lesson, at all?" As soon as these words left her mouth, she mentally slapped herself. While she hadn't meant it as a sneer, she was almost sure it had sounded mocking. People forget things, dummy, she told herself, I forget things all the time.

Lyrra apologised for her remark, and pointed at the textbook. "Gillyweed allows humans to breathe underwater," she said, "The person who eats it gets gills, and also webbing between their fingers and toes to make swimming easier. Oh, and I believe it had some more effects which I forgot about. Let's see what the book says."

While she was talking, a large drop of ink had fallen from her quill and landed on her parchment with a splat, right next to where she had written her name.

Did you pay attention during the lesson, at all?

Sarah laughed out loud at this. She loved when people were straightforward with her. While what Lyrra said might have been a bit harsh for other people, Sarah loved it. Because it was the truth! Sarah honestly wasn't listening that much today. She was just so exhausted from the night before. She had stayed up very late working on homework from her other classes.

Hah! No, your right. I wasn't paying that much attention.

Sarah noticed that Lyrra seemed to be quietly scolding herself for what she had said. Sarah didn't want Lyrra to feel bad about what she had said because Lyrra was right. Sarah should have been paying better attention.

Seriously, you're totally good. That was funny.

Gillyweed allows humans to breathe underwater, The person who eats it gets gills, and also webbing between their fingers and toes to make swimming easier. Oh, and I believe it had some more effects which I forgot about. Let's see what the book says.

But while Lyrra was talking, a big drop of ink splattered from her quill next to her name on her parchment.

Here. Let me help you out.

Sarah searched through her bag and eventually found a napkin she carried around for situations like this.

Here you go.

Sarah wiped the ink splatter off of Lyrra's parchment.

Alright, back to work!

She looked at her parchment and answered the first question that asked what a Gillyweed was. Her quill scratched on her paper as she wrote.

Alright, let's move on.

Lyrra hadn't even noticed the ink that had dropped on her parchment. Sarah kindly helped her by cleaning it up with a napkin. "Thank you," Lyrra smiled. She appreciated it, and she was also relieved that Sarah was able to take a joke. She had laughed away what might have otherwise become an awkward situation.

"Alright, back to work!" Sarah went back to writing and Lyrra turned to her own work once again, ready to focus on the next question. The ink splatter had left a visible stain but it was barely noticable. While she read the next question, she noticed that she'd started to feel pretty tired already. Even though there was still a lot of work to be done. She reread the question and despite finding it a bit difficult to concentrate, answered it with relative ease. The following questions weren't too hard for her either. Sometimes she had to look something up in the textbook she shared with Sarah, but for the most part it wasn't too hard. When she was about halfway through her assignment, Lyrra realized she should probably check on Sarah. She set down her quill, stretched her fingers and looked over at the girl next to her.

"How's it going for you?"
she asked while peeking at Sarah's work. She wondered how far Sarah had come with her assignment, and if she might need some help. Lyrra herself was getting quite tired of it already.
