There were quite a few students now searching in the daffodils for their keys and it was proving a harder task than EmmaLee had first thought. Between all of the hands and clothing of the other students and the general underbrush surrounding the daffodils, EmmaLee wondered if maybe it would be prudent to take a step back and let the area clear before she tried to find her box.

As she took a step back from her searching, EmmaLee caught the whisper of a couple of words that sounded like Stephen. Her anxious ears could have caught his whisper in a windstorm. Could he be here already? Practical and punctual as always, of course he would be here somewhere. EmmaLee's heart leapt into her throat in a weird mixture of excitement and nerves. She hated this feeling from the very first onset and as she had been experiencing it every single time she encountered him all week, she was really rather over it. She would have much preferred the old excitement back without the nerves of how to behave around him without giving her feelings away. Taking a breath to shove down the nerves but not the excitement, blue eyes searched the gaggle of students for Stephen's own starry blue eyes or his fluffy crop of brown hair.

EmmaLee frowned as finding Stephen proved just as hard as finding the boxes containing the keys to their evening among the clothing and limbs of the other students. Taking another step back in order to maybe have a clearer view, her attention was grabbed by another voice coming up beside her and she turned to see Kaya Bennett.

"Kaya!" She said, beaming at the other girl. "It is wonderful to see you again! You look absolutely stunning." She commented, looking over her friend's outfit. It really did suit her, from the silver cat mask to the icy white and blue jewelry and her dark blue dress. "I would to love search with you." She giggled a little. "Rather, I would love some help searching, as I am not sure if the boxes are just very well hidden or if there are too many people looking in the same place to be able to find them easily." She remarked, gesturing to the gaggle of students.

What a view. The grounds rolled out around them just like Greta remembered, green in every direction and beautifully framed by highland mountains and lake. With several hours still remaining of the day, warm rays of sunshine beat down upon them with promises of good memories to be had. Around her, students filed towards the Quidditch pitch in various states of attire, all of them spectacular in their own ways: from elaborate costumes, to vividly coloured textiles, to immaculately crafted gowns. It was like something out of a fairy tale. She couldn't exactly recall how long it had been since she'd been able to make the trip to Hogwarts, having taken up a stint interning with her mother for the family business during those breaks when her peers traveled west. But she wasn't going to waste a single moment of it.

"NIIIFFFYYYYYY!" A holler sounded from somewhere behind the throng of students making their way through the pitch. Although she couldn't see much, there was at least one individual Greta could make out even at a distance. There could be no other who fit the image of a white-haired boy riding atop the towering shoulders of their Britalian brethren. A wide grin erupted across the little Norwegian's countenance at just how easily she was able to track down her brothers. Not that much tracking had been required. They stuck out like a sore thumb.

Her on the other hand, standing at her grand height of barely over five feet, would have to work to catch their attention. Cupping her hands around her mouth, she called out again, "ROOOOOOOO!" To some it might have sounded like she was howling, but if anyone looked her way, she paid them no mind, hopping up onto her toes and waving her arms enthusiastically above her head before bounding forward again.

It was a little trickier this time compared to past experiences, fingers plucking up her dress so that she didn't trip on the hem in her rush to join her friends. Having lost some of her baby fat and starting to look a little more womanly, Greta had felt the need to wear something more than just "cute". She wanted to be pretty. Her poor mother had gracefully received Greta's begging for a new dress with staunch defiance, but even she had eventually relented. No doubt her rationale was in a deeply seeded hope that perhaps it would help her daughter to mingle and make positive impressions with others of her age appropriately raised. Naturally, Greta had immediately interpreted this as "appropriately pureblood". She hadn't said anything at the time, though. Whatever her mother's motive for relenting, the little valkyrie wasn't about to argue when she was actually getting what she wanted.

And it was so lovely. Just the bodice of the dress alone was a testament to the gown's exquisite tailoring, snugly embracing Greta's form though not quite so tight that she couldn't breath. Skillfully constructed, it accentuates curves while offering comfort and support. Crossed lacework detailed its front, adding an air of historical whimsy. The sweetheart neckline, while modest, was edged with a wide band of golden ribboning that framed her collarbones. With any luck, it would add a touch of subtle allure, something the girl was desperately hoping to capitalize upon. But it was the colour that she most adored. With notes of green and teal and blue, its gradient reminded her of the sea near which she lived, and it almost seemed to shift depending on just how the light struck it, like the very fabric was alive.

Sheer sleeves fell three quarters of the way down her arms, allowing a tantalizing glimpse of skin and adding touch of elegance. They were a little bit poofy, something Greta had had mixed feelings for at first, wondering if perhaps they were just a little bit too fantastical. She had come to quite like them, though, as they provided a certain roominess that accommodated her generally active movement. She didn't have to worry about accidentally popping a seem or feeling constricted. Plus, they breathed quite nicely, and the elegant cuffs at her forearms kept the fabric out of her way and her hands free for whatever activities she might like to pursue.

What really set the gown apart, however, what had led Greta to fall in love with it as something more than just a dress but rather a transformative work of art, was the skirt. Made of a soft sheer material like the sleeves, it cascaded from the waste of her bodice in layers, each adding to the whole in an ethereal sort of beauty. A gentle shimmer could be seen on some layers, while others were stitched with lace motifs of leaves and flowers. Despite its diaphanous nature, the material held a certain weight to it that allowed it to fall elegantly to the ground and swayed with every movement, evoking a gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze. Continuing from the bodice, the colours of the sea continued its gradient, fading to paler tones as it reached its hem. And there, embroidered with an immaculate attention to detail was the very image of the forest itself. Silhouettes of trees and flowers, little creatures and fauna wound their way around the fabric, depicting a whimsical wooded scene.

Greta hadn't just feel like she was in a fairytale when she had first donned the gown, she was the fairytale, feeling every bit a forested princess. Using feathers and flowers she had collected and dried over the years, she crafted a mask to match. Her hair had been left largely natural, large waves of ashen blonde cascading down her back, although she had elected to weave a section of it into a pulled braid, adorning it with flowers and leaves to bring the ensemble together. She had even applied some makeup to highlight her cerulean eyes and bring out the best of her features. All with one goal in mind: to finally work up the courage to do something she'd been wanting to do since that game of spin the bottle at the pirate summer camp. And if how she had felt when she had finally stepped back to examine herself in the mirror was anything to go by, perhaps today might just be that magical day.

Shoes pitter-pattered on the ground as she hurried forward, skirt flying out behind her. As much as she kept her trajectory and weaving in and out between other students in the direction of the other Durmstrang students, she couldn't help but let her attention wander. It was glorious. She couldn't remember there being trees like this on the pitch the last time she had been here, but the way they arced and wove together overhead to form something of a passageway made it feel like she was being transported into a land where anything might be possible. Lights twinkled like the stars that couldn't yet be seen, and Greta made a little wish behind a dimpled smile. The flowers were stunning as well, the pathway lined with such a lush variety that she found herself almost spinning just trying to take them all in.

"Oh, isn't it just glorious," she breathed with a dreamy sigh as she neared Valentin and Romeo. "I never know what to expect from Hogwarts and their events. They really change it up every time. It's so creative. But I think I like this one best. Doesn't it feel like we're in a...." Her comment tapered off, glee and excitement slowly fading to be replaced with a tilt of the head and a curious look towards the gates. "Why are they closed?" she wondered. "Has it not started yet?" Her head craned briefly up at the not-giants next to her. "Niffy, that's really not fair. You two are already too tall as it is." Arms folded over her bodice, lips turning to a frown. With nearly two feet on her, Romeo was already a ridiculous contrast to her diminutive size. The addition of Niffy on top of him only made the situation hypoerbolically comical. "Come down?" A lip protruded in a pout. "Please?"

Today was the big day. The Spring Ball. Kaitlyn was apprehensive. She took her time throughout the day. To style her hair and apply her minimal makeup. All by hand, the muggle way, her vastly preferred method. Just like with her regular appearance, she took the time to make sure she got it right. Her makeup was indeed minimal and highlighted her freckles. Her dress hugged her body, swaying just right. Her sandals were comfortable. Her hair looked amazing, tightly styled.

Kaitlyn was not a big fan of crowds. She was naturally introverted and kept to herself, a lot. Through her social interactions so far in her first year, she was slowly growing. Growing to be less shy and more comfortable talking to others. Yet, she was still apprehensive about crowds. They made her want to clamp up in a ball to hide in a corner.

Yet, the socially shy Slytherin knew appearances were important. A fact stamped on her brain from her etiquette classes at St. Ann’s all-girls Catholic boarding school. From the training, they attended parties at local, and some not-as-local, venues. Despite her shy nature, she knew how to act at these parties. Here at Hogwarts, however, she didn’t think she’d be reprimanded for failing to be polite. Yet, it was burned into her soul, figuratively.

Kaitlyn walked out to Quidditch Pitch for this ball. Her movements were slow, due to her apprehension, and yet still as graceful as ever. Her blue eyes passed through the crowd, not acknowledging any mine yet. A light flush bloomed on her cheeks, in addition to the applied blush makeup. Her freckles popped even more. She read the clue on the board. ‘Easy, honking daffodils. Then again, the large group already searching through them likely gives it away, too.’ The shy Slytherin approached one of the bushes not already claimed by another and began to search for the key.

Theo rolled out of bed at noon on the day of the ball and lingered for a while, flipping through a Transfiguration textbook, struggling to keep his eyes open. Eventually, he dragged himself up and began preparing for the evening with a tired yawn. After a shower, he laid out his dress robes on the bed, opting for a simple ensemble with a velvet cape. It was a choice designed to avoid drawing too much attention or standing out, fitting his plan perfectly. He was only attending because his house point tally had earned him a spot on the ball planning committee, obliging him to be present.

Fortunately, it was a masquerade ball, offering him a slight hope that his identity would remain concealed behind his wolf mask. Yet, his distinctive Ashen hair made recognition easy. Still, he couldn't help but acknowledge the reality: he was virtually unknown, a mere nobody. Being ‘recognised’ was an anxiety born from thin air.

Arriving at the practice pitch by 16:10 dressed and masked, he made no attempt to seek out the other members of the planning committee. Instead, he stood at the pitch gates with his arms folded, watching everyone harass honking daffodils. His expression was impatient, stern, and cold, as if he really didn’t want to be there. Hunger gnawed at him too, and it would only subside once the ball entrance was open, compounding his impatience.

Much to Evelynn's apprehensive dismay, the day of the grand masquerade had arrived. Had she it her way, large-scale school events such as this would be canceled. They were simply too chaotic. Whoever thought that allowing students from more than half a dozen schools from all over the world in a relatively confined space with limited—if any—adult supervision wasn't going to be an absolute recipe for disaster ought to be admitted to St. Mungo's. It was the last place the Gryffindor wished to be. And yet, it was exactly for that reason that she had resolved to do so. If there was even a chance for something to transpire that might offer her another glimpse into old mysteries yet unsolved, then her attendance would be worthwhile. She didn't wish to see anybody else vanish. She couldn't. And so, with a drawn out exhalation through her nose and one last look in her enchanted satchel to ensure she had anything she might require at her disposal, she drew a 'v' in the air with her wand, muttered, "reducio", and then tucked both satchel and wand into the deep pockets of her gown.

Hers was a pace unhurried. While peers chattered and giggled around her, eagerly making their descent from Gryffindor tower and down the floors to the Small Hall below, Evelynn meandered with an air that suggested she would get there when she got there. Grey lidded eyes scanned the walls of the corridors as she passed, nodding now and then to some portrait or other if they acknowledged her presence, but otherwise saying nothing. The only conversation she kept was with her thoughts, serenaded by the whispering of her skirt as its hem traced gently along the stone. Every now and then, a hand would drop to either side, pressing through the layers of tulle and chiffon to feel for the items stowed safely in her pockets. Not even arrived at the eve's event and already an uneasy agitation simmered at her core. Accustomed to keeping her wand stowed either in her boot or in a quick-release bracer, the idea of it sitting loosely in a pocket left her uneasy. It would be a relatively simple thing for someone with deft hands to nick it. But given the nature of her quarry, she neither wanted to be predictable, nor obvious with her motives.

As she passed a mirror on her way towards the entrance, she paused to examine her reflection with a calculated gaze. Stark auburn curls were pinned up in an elegant updo. Tasteful makeup had been applied to shadow the eyes, define her brows, and rouge her cheeks. She had even gone so far as to apply a tinted moisturizer to her lips. Earrings of gold and yellow quartz dangled from her lobes, just barely kissing the top of the collar of her dress. Fingers trailed over its beaded contours, ensuring it appropriately latched before gently smoothing down the sheer material over her sternum and plucking at the poof upon either shoulder. For several minutes, she preened, ensuring no detail of her gown—as golden and radiant as a setting sun—was left out of place. Like her wand and her wits, her wardrobe was a tool, and one she intended to employ to its fullest. To whatever capacity that might involve.

By the time she arrived on the grounds and made her languid descent towards the quidditch training pitch, the events were already underway. At a distance, she could see that part of the pitch had been arranged with tables and chairs in the shade. Although she couldn't make out exactly what manner of supplies they were, it was clear even from a ways off that some manner of activities had been set up. If Miss Clairmont had anything to do with the planning, Evelynn could only imagine there would be crayons and colouring and all manner of crafts that she might expect to see in a primary school classroom. There were blankets and seating set out in the sun as well, an invitation to relax and socialize while basking in the warmth of the sun's rays. Surprising herself, she actually started walking in that direction, drawn by that very notion, before realizing and slowing her steps to a stop. For several moments, she let her gaze shift between the two options, head tilted pensively. Ultimately, her path diverted towards the archway of trees and abundance of flowers lining its path. If there was to be any underhanded dealings, she rationalized, it was more likely to be prevalent in the more densely occupied area where the dance was to take place.

It wasn't until she had joined those towards the back of the crowd, however, that she noticed the gates were not even open. Moreover, students aplenty could be seen diving into the various pockets of flowers. Some of them even looked like honking daffodils, plants they had covered quite early on in herbology that would aggressively "attack" anyone or anything threatening their space by nuzzling them with their bulbs and emit a rather annoying honking noise. Lips pressed together, brow lofting, Evelynn searched for some sort of rationale as to why they would risk soiling their dresses in undignified flower wading. She quickly spotted the board hanging from the frontmost tree by the entrance. "Ah.." The riddle—if she could really call it that—provided the answer.

Not particularly keen on joining in on the hunt and in the absence of spying one particular individual clothed in silver gallantry with eyes to match, the lioness contented herself with lingering on the outskirts, gaze roaming over those in attendance to begin the profiling with which she had grown so lax. The most eye-catching individuals had to be the duo of stacked individuals who, combined, easily doubled the height of just about everyone else present. While she didn't recognize the bottom of the pair immediately, the shock of white hair and athletic build of the one sitting on the first's shoulders—and the assistance of a yell of "NIFFY" from somewhere in the crowd—flashed her back to earlier years. There was no mistaking Valentin Schnell, the white niffler. Evidently, Durmstrang's quidditch team was here. She watched them interact for a short while, noting a petite girl about her own age with them, before moving on. Mentioning: Valentin (@Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood), Romeo (@Piérre Marchonné), Greta, and @Pericles Dralt

Apart from them, she noticed a younger boy in a fox mask with bits of blonde hair poking out from the hood he wore. Like many of the others, he lingered near one of the Honking Daffodil collections. Mentioning: @Zach Zaphiere

Nearby, also searching through the flowers, was the interesting sight of an oversized moth. Another time, it might have brought a smile to the lioness' face. She had a certain fondness for moths and butterflies, having been known in the past to garb herself in high fashion clothing themed to their patterns and flair. The feathered antennae were an interesting touch, she felt, and she rather enjoyed the winged silhouette during those moments when the girl spread her arms or a breeze caught the fabric. Though she hadn't any idea who the girl was, Evelynn was likely to keep an eye on her if for no other reason than because she approved of the costume. Mentioning: @Rebecca Lark

Elsewhere, a young girl adorned entirely in pink was difficult to ignore. Hers was an ensemble whose details Evelynn could appreciate. Even from where she stood, the quality of the accessories was quite evident and a certain level of respect was silently relayed at the understated accompaniments. Too often, many of the younger students enjoyed dressing themselves with too many ostentatious pieces whose end result was less than their sum, appearing little more than toddlers freshly returned from an excursion into putting on everything in their mother's closet and jewelry box they could find. The same could not be said here. She was quite pretty, and Evelynn was willing to bet there was old pureblood money behind her wardrobe. Mentioning: @Genevieve Delacourt

Perhaps one of the more eye-catching gowns, however, was the one that aimed not to be colourful, but rather absorb all surrounding wavelengths of the visible spectrum. Draped in a floor-length black gown, another young girl carried herself with a quiet confidence that spoke of pride and a stable upbringing. Evelynn tilted her head, the grey hues behind her golden mask following after the girl as she waded through the other students. Unlike many of the other students who searched the flowers with disregard for self or clothing, this one took care with how she moved and where she trailed her skirt. Every now and then, the floating balls of light that wandered within the canopy corridor illuminated a series of subtle runic detailing on the girl's dress. Curious. Mentioning: @River Luxley

Another similar sort of confidence wafted from another equally young individual garbed in a skillfully tailored champagne gown with petite floral detailing. The way she stood, just slightly bent over a bush of flowers as though to expend the least amount of energy possible to put on the display that she had joined the hunt screamed pureblood. Evelynn's lips pursed, thoughtfully, possibilities churning behind the studious mask. She wasn't alone, however. Mentioning: @Beatrice Dupont

A boy dressed in a black kimono and kitsune mask searched the bushes near her. Japanese, she presumed. Or at least someone who enjoyed their culture. A holstered wand at his side did not go unnoticed. To have it out so readily was an interesting choice. The only rationale to be that the boy felt its swift retrieval would be a necessity. Her eyes narrowed. Perhaps he was simply of a similar mind of her own, one who felt the preservation of peace to be a necessity. Something at the back of her mind prodded her to tread a more pessimistic road, however. He would be another upon whom she kept her attention, unwilling to give him the benefit of the doubt and instead suspecting his might be fingers that itched more than others. Mentioning: Akira Shimizu (@Avery Chen)

Partway through her musings and observations, Evelynn withdrew a small notebook and pencil from deep within her pocket. On the outskirts of the crowd, she continued her search, much like the rest. Only hers wasn't a search for a key. She searched for something else entirely, pencil scratching away at regular intervals as her gaze moved from one individual to the next. As more gathered and the crowd grew, she would have to step away from her spot and reposition, all the while trying to keep certain individuals within her direct line of sight. It didn't matter to her if the gates were open or closed, or the music played or not. The purpose of her night was already well underway.

Today was the Spring Masquerade Ball. Sullivan had been looking forward to this dance since he first found out about it at the beginning of the year. He loved attending social events, and dressing up was one of his favourite things to do.
He had his outfit picked out for months, and getting ready now - his excitement level was beyond control. No one was in the dorms yet, but he wasnt about to wait for them to put his outfit on. He almost wore it the whole day, but his roommates convinced him against it.

Sullivan was one of the first students to arrive as he made his way down the grounds to the training pitch that had been set up for the Masquerade Ball. The bushes and trees were in full bloom, and in amongst the array of flowers were a multitude of colourful fairy lights. They lined the path towards the centre of the pitch, Sullivan was in awe as he followed them further along. He stopped every so often to smell the different flowers and of course didnt pass up an opportunity to gather a sample of petals, or leaves, or twigs.

Sullivan wanted to see the rest of the ballroom, so he took a lazy lap around the perimeter of the pitch. There were more bushes and fairy lights, and the soft sound of birds chirping filled the evening air as the sun sunk lower casting streaks of yellows, reds, and pinks across the sky. This was his favourite time of year, and his favourite time of the day, everything was perfect and beautiful.

As Sullivan made his way back to the front entrance, he noticed a familiar head of bright blonde hair, Lorcan, he was pouncing on a daffodil bush. Sulli chuckled to himself as he watched for a few moments before walking up to his roommate.

"Have you had any luck finding anything yet?" He asked, joining in on the search that Lorcan was deep into.

Lately, the spring Masquerade Ball was all Élodie had been thinking about. She was excited to see what the students at Hogwarts put together, but she was even more excited to get all dressed up, be at a ball without her parents' watchful eye, and meet new people. So almost five hours before the ball started, Élodie began to get ready.

She'd spent forever styling her hair to perfection, adding in small silvery-white butterflies where she deemed fit. She looked through all her jewelry for what seemed like hours, searching for a certain pair of earrings and the perfect necklace. She'd added just the right amount of mascara onto her eyelashes, blush onto her cheeks, and highlighter to give her a glow and enhance her natural features. But her favorite part about getting ready was her dress. The blue ballgown was truly stunning with its off-the-shoulder sleeves and silvery glitter. Élodie could spend hours just admiring the dress alone. Finishing up her look for the evening with her silver heels and her silver mask, Élodie then made her way down to the Quidditch Training Pitch where the ball was to occur.

The pitch had been beautifully transformed. There were trees and shrubs around the pitch, the ones in the middle decked out with fairy lights. Élodie presumed they led to the entrance of the ball. Birds were chirping and there were different types of flowers in their little clusters adding a touch of vibrant color to the green.

Approaching the entrance to the ball, Élodie tried not to wrinkle her nose in distaste as she saw various students digging around through some of the honking daffodil bushes and others standing by, just watching. She had no clue what they could've been doing until she saw the board and what had been written on it. A riddle. Reading it over twice, it then clicked why everyone had been digging around through honking daffodil bushes. One of them held the key to get into the ball.

Reluctantly, Élodie walked over to an unoccupied bush. She couldn't believe she was doing this. Moving the skirt of her dress out of the way with one hand, she used the other to peek into the bush briefly, not wanting to ruin the appearance that she'd worked hard on.

Colin was super energised after playing spin the bottle earlier! Snogging was so much fun! Colin was all smiles as he headed back down towards his dorm to get his stuff together for the ball. He'd been to a couple balls already in his time. He didn't really understand the concept. As he observed the kids planning and getting ready, you'd think that a ball was supposed to be some kind of fancy dress party with fancy food and dancing!

Hah!

Colin knew better by now. Last fall, he and Clair didn't dance at all! They got as far as the boats in the lake and just ended up kissing each other the whole time! He heard later that kids were drowning and being eaten by grindylows or something all the while he and his girl were floating along. Colin just shrugged. And the year before that, he and a bunch of brave kids got involved in a battle against the Hag Doll. Colin narrowed his eyes. That Hag Doll had tried to kill his cousin --- well, now his sister! --- Lily! He could not let that happen!

So. Once Colin heard about the spring ball coming up, he began to make his own plans. He was kind of sad that Clair wouldn't be going. After all, there would certainly be some kissing! He rolled his eyes. And maybe some dancing too! He sighed as he sorted through the detritus of his trunk. Chaos and fighting evil monsters with Clair was so much fun! This time, Colin reckoned he'd have to go it alone.

And so he got his supplies ready, chucking everything he'd need into his bottomless satchel. Broom. Walking stick cudgel. Bruise paste. Cheese. Chocolate. Bottles of water. Lastly, it was time to get himself ready. That would be easy enough! Colin really wasn't that into fancy dress. Plus, he was well known for utterly destroying almost any article of clothing he owned. With the exception of his plain old drab green kilts. He already scourgified them up, and he thought they looked pretty good! A loose white shirt, a cool pendant that hung next to his wolf mark, and some silver ear cuffs completed his look.

Oh!

Colin smiled as he got one more thing from his trunk. Still wrapped, it was a really spiffy silver wolf mask with coloured gems on it!

The Slytherin boy strapped his satchel around his narrow waist and slung his mask over his shoulder. Nodding to the mirror, he determined it was time to head out! Leaving the castle at last, Colin loped along the pathway that led down towards the quidditch training pitch, his bare feet and long legs bringing him down to the place quickly. Greebo scampered along at his side, as eager as Colin for an adventure! A number of kids had already arrived he saw. Pink dresses and blue dresses and high heeled shoes and a horrifically stinky cacophony of perfumes and colognes wafted on the breeze.

Colin sneezed.

He sniffed. Drat. Why did people have to make themselves so smelly!

He shook his wild mane of silvery hair. Oh well! He was here for the chaos and the adventure, not the perfume. He determined to shut that out and push forward. When he got closer, Colin saw some kids looking at a posted sign of some kind. He pushed by a couple of tiny first years, looking over others' heads. It was a poem! A veritable rune to be riddled! Colin chanted the poem in a sing-song voice:

This clue is very easy,
Though the flowers might make you quite queasy.
Toot-toot goes the car,
And so does this flower.

Colin cast his gaze around at all the flowers and shrubs. Kids were searching for something in them. Must be the key! Many had trumpet shaped flowers, but none of them would work on a motor car, Colin thought! He caught scent of several familiar kids, but also many others that were completely unknown to him. Sure most of those were from the other schools! Colin strolled among the bushes and the trees. Lorcan had been by here. He wondered if his younger brother would solve the riddle. That would be revealed soon enough!

Colin smirked.

He caught sight of a really cute girl a distance away. A lad was talking to her. He must be from Mahoutokoro, Colin thought. He wore a long black kilt and a kind of orangey robe and a foxlike mask. Apart from the talk, his ears picked up the music of a certain kind of flower.

"Toot toot and daffy hoot! Hoot and toot the daffy-dilly-os!" he chanted as he skipped over towards Bea. Prefect Dupont. He crouched down to check around the honking daffodils. He was pretty sure the key would be found somewhere in the vicinity! He stood and raised his eyebrow in the girl's direction. "I reckon you two have also solved the rune of the hooty-tooty flowers?"

Colin gave them both a bow that might seem to some almost incongruous with his half-wild presentation. "Prefect Bea! Sir Mahoutokoro!" Colin's neck chain and pendant tinkled delicately as he stood back up straight, shaking out his long hair. "Colin, at yer service!" He nodded towards his midnight black cat. "This here's Greebo! Are you here for the chaos, lad, or the dancing? And what about you Bea? Say, where's yer cute twin, Ying? I'm surprised she's not here yet!"

Irya neatened his navy blue tie and stared into the mirror as he had been for the last few hours. Is my hair tidy enough? A couple loose strands stuck out, so he tried his best to flatten them. The last thing he wanted was to look terrible when put alongside the other ball attendees.

The specially tailored jacket (which his mother had insisted upon, despite the cost and the fact that he already had a nice one in his wardrobe anyways) matched the tie in its colour, and was made from a soft and luxurious fabric, with neatly lined pockets and a stylish collar that didn't press hard against his neck. He buttoned it up with increased confidence in his appearance.

When he was finally fully satisfied with the position of his silver-buckled belt and the black, undecorated mask, it was time to head over to the Quidditch Training Pitch, where many students from all the different schools mingled outside the entrance.

As he approached the door, though, a sign met his face and he instantly let out a groan of frustration as he realised it was some kind of riddle, and that he would be pretty useless at one of them. So he took a glance at the other students, who were all crouched around the honking daffodil bushes and digging at them. We're supposed to earn our way in?

The boy paced, with his back straight since this was a formal event, to one of the less crowded bushes, where a girl in a stunning dress and hair styled to perfection, was searching it already. Nervously, he crouched a few metres from her and began to shove aside bunches of the flowers with very little clue as to what exactly he was searching for.

A sense of renewal. The spring wind gently brushed against Della's dress. She couldn't believe that she was here at this ball willingly—by herself. Her ball experiences in her first and second years made her write off the idea of going ever again. She wasn't sure what did it, what made dances particularly dangerous at Hogwarts (not that regular ho-hum of classes were that safe though)—maybe it was just the sheer magical pubescent giddiness concentrated in one spot. It must attract something sinister to the table, some cruel narrator that wished to put them through the gambit.

But last fall she had allowed herself to get talked into going again by her older teammate, Xailah. And they had fun! Just normal, good ole fun. No magic necessary (apart from flying in fashionably late on their broomsticks). Her third year was beginning to feel like a renewal period, resetting friendships, rewriting experiences, and rediscovering wonder outside of broom racing. So over the spring break, she got in her head that should come to the masquerade. Her mom even helped her assemble a proper gown and mask. They spent hours practicing hair and makeup. Even without the mask, Della looked nothing like herself. She never wore makeup, and her hair was usually a long, nearly tangled mess draped down her back. Now it was bundled up with curls on the top of her head.

She truly felt transformed.

She was even early to this ball. As expected, everyone already here was dressed to the nines. Della didn't see anyone she knew immediately—it was either because of the masked attire or the infiltration of foreign students. The ball hadn't even opened yet, and students were mingling around its entrance. There was a flurry of activity like people were searching for something. Her stomach dropped. Was something already happening? Before people had even begun the festivities? But no, upon closer inspection, it was a game. No one was screaming, some might even be laughing. There was a note, a scavenger hunt. Della regained her composure. This would be fun.

She made her way over to the flowers she thought best matched the clue and began rustling through the leaves as much her as her elaborate dress would allow.
