"That's impressive," Malin commented, noting the reassuring smile from the other girl. She had mainly focused on one part of River's answer, however.
The Penns family? She wondered, her mind racing at River's recognition of her last name.
She had only figured out when she got her letter of acceptance to Hogwarts that her father's side of the family carried magic, but she hadn't realized just how much.
So the Penns family is ancient and noble? She thought, No, that doesn't sound right. Maybe a low-key ancient Pureblood family? She tried, but she couldn't make it sound any less weird.
She had only met her grandparents spare few times, but they had seemed rather..un-magic-y?
And if River knew of the 'Penns family', would that mean they were well known? Maybe even one of the older wizarding families.
Malin's eyes gleamed with curiosity, but she kept herself in check, promising that she would go to the library that night and research further into her family.
"Well, you're very good at it," Malin stated towards River's piano skills.
Great one, sherlock. It's not like being good at piano comes with taking piano lessons for seven years, she inwardly scolded herself, praying that she didn't seem like as much of a fool as she felt she was making of herself.

"That's impressive," Lin said, a pensive look overcoming her features as she though of something deeply. "Well, you're very good at it," she glanced over at the piano nearby, indicating towards River's skills at playing it.

"Oh, thank you," River said quietly, a small sincere smile spreading over her lips. She wasn't used to being complimented. Sure, her parents would sometimes ask her to play for them or show them some of her newest artworks, and her tutors were always a little smug at how quickly she would pick things up, but those never really felt as worthwhile as the simple compliment from the girl in front of her. River was good at it, she was proud of that fact, her piano playing having been one of her favourite things to do when not reading, studying or messing around with one of her creatures.

"You are quite adept at the violin yourself," she said to Lin, her cold mask melting slightly as her eyes took on a warmer hue. Her mother had always said that a person could tell how River was feeling just by the colour of her eyes: icy blue when anxious or nervous, stormy grey when angered or frustrated, a light silvery-blue when she felt mischievous and playful, or a soft grey-blue that reminded one of melting snow at the start springtime whenever she was happy and content. River never quite understood it herself, but she would never doubt her mother's words, so she assumed it must have been true. She was sure that, had her mother been present, she would be bemoaning about how her daughter's 'precious cloudy-blues' were kept hidden from majority of people residing at Hogwarts.

Malin smiled gently at the compliment. She rarely got those, and when she did it was usually a playful jab. But this one seemed so...genuine. Like River really meant it.
"Thanks." She said, her tone airy.
She paused for a moment, taking in the scene around her. The light of the day filtered in through the slightly unclear windows and shone on the musical pair. Outside, the sky was turning pink, and the fireflies were coming out, signalling the time for the students to gather at the Great Hall for the last meal of the day.
With an inaudible sigh, Malin took out her soft cloth from her violin case and swept it along the strings and body of her violin. Loosening the bow, she tucked it into the case along with her mahogany violin and shoulder rest. She zipped up the case and carefully slung it over her shoulder, using the straps going from end to end like a backpack.
"It looks like we have to go, but I would really like to hang out some other time." Malin offered genuinely. She truly did want to get to know the girl better, but she honestly was not one hundred percent sure River felt the same way. What if River was only pretending to be friendly? Maybe it was something she had said? Was the James Bond reference too much?
Doubts filled her mind, as often happened, but she showed none of that on her face, having grown used to covering up her doubts and negative thinking.

"Thanks," the Gryffindor said, glancing out of a nearby window. She sighed and began packing away her instrument, speaking to a startled River, "It looks like we have to go, but I would really like to hang out some other time." The offer seemed genuine, and one River would eagerly have accepted if she wasn't so awkward.

Instead, she gave a small smile, hands fiddling anxiously with her sleeves, "I would enjoy that, perhaps we could play together once again? Or we could meet and accompany one another in the Library or at the Black Lake?" There, that's some normal people hangout spots, right? "Or, um, anywhere else that suits you. This weekend perhaps?" She said, a nervous edge to her voice. Doubts filled her mind as she waited for Lin's answer before quickly losing all previous confidence, "We don't have to if you do not wish to do so."

She walked back over to the piano, settling the cover over the ivory keys gently before turning back around to face her, hopefully, new friend. "I shall head back to the Slytherin Common Room now," she gave a quick nod as a goodbye, "Goodbye Penns." Without waiting for a response, she walked quickly out of the rehearsal room as gracefully as she could manage.

You are an idiot, River Luxley.

Slightly startled at the sudden swing of character, Malin stood frozen for a second.
But, ever the impulsive Gryffindor, she hurried out of the room, searching for but a moment before she found River.
"This weekend works for me!" She shouted after River, "How about Saturday at the Black Lake?" She offered, her voice echoing through the empty corridor.
Great job. Now you're just hollering at the poor girl. Let the girl take a rest, why don't you? She scolded herself.
She was not necessarily confident, but she wasn't nervous. She had a feeling if there was a possibility of friendship between the two that Malin was going to have to be the one to reach out.
She honestly didn't mind being the reacher, she often was, but she hated the feeling that crept into her whenever she asked if someone wanted to hang out. The feeling that they'll say no, call her problematic, and leave.
She assumed the leaving part was rooted in her father leaving her, her mother, and her two brothers, but the 'problematic' part was certainly the cause of a friend she had once had. A friend who had practically ghosted Malin because she was too 'problematic.'
She forced herself to smile casually, not wanting to look desperate to River.

She strode quickly down the corridor, mind submerged in a tirade of self-ridicule. Why did she just- just leave like that! It was incredible rude, and her pale white cheeks were redder than her mother's favourite roses.

"This weekend works for me!" A voice suddenly shouted, echoing down the hallway. Of course, River recognised this voice, she had just been conversing with the Gryffindor girl a minute ago, and so she froze in her tracks, spine stiff in her anxious state. "How about Saturday at the Black Lake?" The blonde offered with a small smile. Had River been a weaker girl, she would have shed a tear at the relief she felt when she heard Lin's offer.

I haven't ruined it yet! She still wishes to spend time with me!

She swiftly turned around, her indifferent mask disappearing with her surprise, staring in shock at Lin, "You really do wish to spend time with me? I was certain I had completely ruined any chance of you interacting with me after such a rude exit. I hadn't meant to be rude! I- I just...Um, yes. I would love to spend Saturday with you by the Black Lake." Her words rambled together as she spoke, River was sure that her sudden change from composure to a near panic attack would most likely shock the unsuspecting girl, so she quickly took a deep breath and answered Lin's invitation.

"I heard they were hosting a Masquerade ball today, if you perhaps wished to accompany for some of it, that would be wonderful. If you have other plans with osmeone else then I apologise, I don't intend to intrude on your already made plans." Although she wasn't rambling like before, she still struggled to regain her lost mask of cold composure and her nervousness was still obvious in how she held her arms around her waist in an imitation of a hug.

Malin smiled warmly at the rambling girl, "I'd love to go. Don't worry, none of my friends would want to go with me, anyway." She said, hiding the twinge of sadness at the end of her sentence. She had friends here, sure, but none that were close enough to hang around with her for an evening, much less invite her willingly.
She could tell by River's stiff posture and the way she hugged her waist that she was still nervous.
"Have you got many friends at Hogwarts?" She questioned impulsively, then inwardly scolded herself.
If she does, she's going to think you pity her, and if she doesn't...well, that's just rude, she thought.
She waited patiently for an answer, debating whether to take it back, apologize, or jump out the nearest window.
Well, she thought logically, surely I can't take it back now.
She had always had trouble apologizing, as she rarely did it at home. If she did it at home, someone would laugh at her because she was genuinely guilty about whatever she had done.
Plus, she reasoned inwardly, if I were to take off at a sprint towards the nearest window, I would most certainly trip and fall on my face and then what would I do?
Well, she thought, Perhaps I should own up to it? Never talk to River again and avoid her like the plague? No, that would be rather rude.

River smiled slightly when Lin was quick to reply, "I'd love to go. Don't worry, none of my friends would want to go with me anyway." The girl seemed to turn despondent at the quite admission, although River could still hear it in the quiet corridor. The blonde girl looked up at River and suddenly blurted out towards the Slytherin girl, "Have you got any friends at Hogwarts?"

River felt herself blush slightly in embarrassment. Of course she knows you don't really have a lot of friends! You can barely hold a conversation for ti jævla minutter ten fucking minutes! "I have spoken to a few other first years in my common room and the library and we've been quite friendly, but I'm not sure if I could ask them to attend the ball together even if I wished to. I kind of just blurted it out to you due to my nerves..." She trailed off as her blush deepened, she couldn't hold eye contact with Lin anymore, afraid that she would make even further a fool of herself.

She did want to go to the ball with Lin, which uplifted her mood enough to send a nervous smile at the girl, but this would be her first formal event that she attended. Sure, she knew all the theory of how to act at a ball, but that didn't mean she wasn't still unsettled at the idea of having to stand among hundreds of other Hogwarts students and interact with a few of them.

"I would like to go with you," she insisted quickly, not wanting Lin to doubt her invitation, "I'll be the one wearing a black gown with a dragon inspired mask."

She wondered back and forth whether she had made a mistake in asking if River had many friends, but after River responded she was sure it was a good thing to do.
Maybe River was lonely, she wondered.
Lin smiled at the girl kindly, hoping to calm down River's nerves.
"Alright. I'll have to put a costume together, as I wasn't planning on going before, but I'll find you." She stated confidently.
She wondered what she was going to wear, as she had never gone to a formal ball, much less a masquerade ball.
She thought about her favourite things, more specifically things that she would turn into a mask. A Niffler mask would look silly next to a dragon, even if Nifflers were Malin's favourite magical creature. Maybe some sort of bird?
"As for Saturday," She began, snapping out of her own thoughts, "How about we can meet at the Black Lake around two? I have some homework to do first so I won't be fully free until then." She offered, her friendly smile never wavering. She had a feeling from River's statement,
'I have spoken to a few other first years in my common room and the library and we've been quite friendly, but I'm not sure if I could ask them to attend the ball together even if I wished to.'
That River perhaps needed some more friends. Maybe River could look past Malin's awkwardness and then Malin could be the friend River might need.
Maybe even a friend who went to a ball together as friends, Malin thought.

"Alright. I'll have to put a costume together, as I wasn't planning on going before, but I'll find you." River felt elated at the blonde girl's words. She agreed! I have a friend that will be going to the ball with me! Takk Odin! Thank Odin!

"As for Saturday, how about we can meet at the Black Lake around two? I have some homework to do first so I won't be fully free until then." River nodded eagerly to her new friend(!!!). At Lin's friendly smile, River finally allowed herself to drop her mask, even if only for a few seconds. She sent a blinding smile at the Gryffindor, white teeth gleaming in the light as her eyes squinted in happiness, she was so incredibly happy in that moment that her original cheerful personality finally showed itself.

"I would love to!" River gripped her hands tightly in front of her chest, preventing them from flapping about as she spoke in that undignified way her etiquette instructor had always hated and tried to teach out of her. "Two works perfectly, I don't mind waiting but we could perhaps meet in the library first and work on our homework together? We can then move onto the Black Lake after we have finished."

She pulls an ornate pocket watch covered in protective Norse runes out of her robes pocket, checking the time, "It is getting quite late now, so I'll have to be on my way to the Slytherin common rooms. Goodbye Lin." She send one last cheerful smile at the girl before walking down the corridor to head to her destination.
