Hand in hand, Alexandra and Kaitlyn quietly snuck through the Hogwarts corridors, weaving through hallways and tiptoeing around sleeping portraits and wandering ghosts. Everything was dark and silent, their soft footfalls the one indication of any living being wandering about.
It was almost surreal, the hallways tinged in the soft blue moonlight, and dramatic shadows making the suits of armor on the walls seem almost alive. I reckon it'd be quite terrifying, she mused as they passed, if armor could just get up and walk around. How would it keep itself together?
Her thoughts were quite consumed until she felt a light tug on her hand. She blinked, noticing that they now stood in front of the double doors leading into the Great Hall. Alexandra brushed a few stray hairs away from her face, her eyes wide. Her nightgown rustled with the faint draft that seemed to chill the hallways, and she seemed to buzz with excitement as they stared at the doors.
"Well," she whispered, turning to grin at Kaitlyn, "no time like the present right? This is a bit scary, I won't lie, but I think it'll be amazing." She pushed one of the doors open, flinching a bit at the creaks and groans it made, then turned to Kailtyn, "After you!"

Thoughts: italicsWhile still holding hands, Kaitlyn snuck through the corridors of Hogwarts with Alexandra. The moved slowly past sleeping portraits and ghosts. The castle itself was dark, illuminated by the moonlight through the windows. In what was normally a bright atmosphere. At night, it certainly felt spooky, with shadows everywhere. It was completely silent, other than the sounds of their steps, as they moved in unison.
‘I can only imagine how this would feel, if I came out here by myself. I guess you could get used to it, especially if you have a habit of walking around at night. I do like knowing that Alexandra is here with me, a constant reminder of the hand I am holding,’ she thought, smiling briefly. Despite the chill in the hallways, Kaitlyn didn’t shiver from the soft and light fabric of her nightgown or the sandals she was wearing. Then again, the Slytherin common room often got chilly like this. It would be something she’d have to get used to, whether she wanted to, or not.
Kailtyn’s eyes grew wide, as they looked upon the giant doors to the Great Hall. A sense of excitement flowed through her as she imagined how the room looked at night. She turned toward Alexandra, returning her grin. “I c-cannot wait,” she giggled quietly. She watched Alexandra push open the door, the sounds it made giving her a slight shiver. ‘I hope no one heard that,’ she thought. “Ok,” she smiled, slipping in to the Great Hall.
The night sky shined on the ceiling, the stars and constellations, not to mention the moon, were clearly visible. The entire room was bathed in the faint moonlight from the windows, shadows clearly everywhere. The normally joyful space was replaced with something dark and foreboding. Kaitlyn held the door open for Alexandra. “Oooh, t-this is exciting. I wish I h-had my sketchpad with m-me for this,” she mused.Reducio

The Great Hall was as quiet as the rest of the castle, but the enchanted ceiling made the place sparkle. Thousands of bright, glittering stars dotted the roof, a beautiful moon painting everything in soft shades of blue. It was a clear night, not a single cloud to cover the shining night sky. Alexandra had never seen anything so beautiful, not ever in her 11 years of life. The moment felt almost suspended in time, like if she kept staring, it would never end.
She was eventually brought back to Earth as they moved further in, passing through the empty benches and dining tables. It's beautiful in a scary way, she concluded, nodding to herself, I don't think I could be here alone. She looked over at Kaitlyn, looking starstruck as she looked around, and smiled to herself a bit. Yeah, I definitely couldn't be here alone.
"Oooh, t-this is exciting. I wish I h-had my sketchpad with m-me for this," she heard Kaitlyn say, and turned towards her, interest glittering in her wide brown eyes.
"You draw?" She asked, a smile flitting over her lips, "That's amazing! What kinds of things do you draw? Is it like, landscapes and such?" Alex had never been much of an artist, preferring to resort to stick figures, but she could appreciate the beauty in art.

Thoughts: italicsAs beautiful as the Great Hall looked, it was certainly haunting, too. Kaitlyn was simply in awe. If she knew it looked like this combination, she would’ve brought her sketchpad with her. It was such a clear night and just perfection! While she had no idea if she had the bravery to come out there by herself, she was glad to be there with Alexandra. Perhaps, they could even do this again, at some point?
Kaitlyn turned to look at Alexandra, as their conversation turned to her drawings. She nodded in confirmation. “Y-yes, I do,” she confirmed. “Thank you. I d-draw a lot of different t-things. I can draw l-landscapes. I really like drawing p-places here at Hogwarts. I can d-draw people … with limited success, a-at least right now,” she replied, smiling at Alexandra.
A quiet giggle danced on her lips. “If you -want, I can show them t-to you in our dorm at s-some point,” she offered. While she had no idea if this was a genuine interest or just something to talk about, she was glad to see Alexandra talk positively about her work. ‘I hope she likes how I draw … I think I’d be very happy about that.’Reducio

Alexandra nods along as Kaitlyn speaks, her eyebrows raised in genuine interest. Everything about being here felt somehow liminal, but with Kaitlyn's quiet voice filling up the space, it made it all much more bearable. She was certainly enjoying their adventure so far, and would love to do it again. Maybe somewhere new, she considered, the Astronomy Tower, or the kitchens. But those were plans for another midnight escapade.
She listens intently as Kaitlyn describes her work. "Amazing," she breathes out, giving the other girl a bright smile that seemed to use up her whole face. A cold draft makes her look around, goosebumps littered her skin, and she lowers her voice down as she speaks, "I'd love to see them. I bet they're amazing! When did you start drawing? Do you usually sneak out at night to draw?" The last question was said with no malice, only curiosity. If Kaitlyn was sneaking out once in a while, maybe Alexandra could tag along and watch her draw, watching as the scene came to life on the pages. Drawing felt to Alex like looking through someone else's eyes, and to understand how they saw beauty in the world. It'd be a good bonding experience!

Thoughts: italicsSeeing the haunting beauty of the Great Hall at night made Kaitlyn wonder just how the rest of the castle looked. Barren from the lack of students congregating. Bathed in moonlight and shadows. The small creaks and the sound of the wind outside gave just that little bit of errieness. Not enough to make you frightened, but enough to make you uneasy. Ugh it was perfection! It gave off total haunted mansion vibes.
Kaitlyn giggled at Alexandra’s comments about her drawings. ‘Wait until she sees them,’ she thought. “Ok. M-maybe when we get back to the dorm, a-and if we’re not tired, I can show you t-then?” She offered with a kind smile. “I started d-drawing a few years ago while a-attending an all-girls boarding s-school,” she replied. Glancing around, she quietly giggled, before resting her blue eyes back on Alexandra. She shook her head. “No. T-this is my first time, ac-atually. But, seeing this m-makes me want to,” she smiled.
Suddenly, Kaitlyn began to fidget nervously and she played with a few strands of her hair. “Um, and if y-you don’t mind … would you l-like to come with me?” She asked quietly. She held her breath in baited anticipation, hoping Alexandra would say yes. ‘It’d be nice to have some company,’ she thought.Reducio

Alexandra sat down on one of the benches as they talked, folding her legs beneath her and fiddling with the hem of her grey nightgown. The soft fabric seemed to shimmer under the light of the stars, the cotton illuminated by the galaxies above them. Although her eyes and attention were centered entirely on Kaitlyn, her hands couldn’t help messing around with the lights on her gown, as if they had a mind of their own (they usually did).
“You attended a boarding school?” She noted, tilting her head in curiosity, “A Muggle one?” She’d only ever heard of them in the stories her mother had told her as a kid, but they were usually bad places, where the heroine would uncover some secret plot to tear down the world or something. Surely nothing like that, she assured herself, Real life isn’t usually like that, right?
Alex giggled at her next question, pressing her hand against her mouth to smother it, “I’d love to sneak out with you more often! Gosh, what the professors would say if they could hear us, but yeah. Anytime you want to come out, just let me know Kait- can I call you that? -I’d love to keep you company!”

Thoughts: italicsSimilar to Alexandra’s nightgown, the lights from the bright constellations overhead sparkled on Kaitlyn’s nightgown, as well. It gave the illusion of a shimmering effect, only broken momentarily by her graceful movements.
Kaitlyn sat down next to Alexandra on the bench, crossing her legs at her ankles. Despite the light show on their nightgowns, she remained focused on Alexandra. It was likely from her etiquette classes and a constant reminder to pay attention. As much as she was an introvert, paying attention was one of her sore spots.
Smiling to Alexandra’s question, Kaitlyn nodded twice. “Y-yes I did. For five years. A m-muggle school called St. Ann’s all-girls Catholic Boarding School. I m-miss it,” she admitted, as her hands began to play with her nails. Despite the strictness, she enjoyed her time there. Likely that was thanks to her amazing group of friends.
Kaitlyn quietly giggled at Alexandra’s response. Her blue eyes twinkled, mirroring the stars above them. “Thank y-you so much! I won’t burden y-you too much, but thank you for a-accepting it. Ok, I will come see you s-straight away. And yes, you can c-call me Kait, I don’t mind. May I call you Alex, or is t-there a different nickname you’d prefer?” She smiled. “I don’t th-think our Professors would b-be too happy with this conversation, but they’re not here, j-just us,” she giggled, covering her mouth with her hand to suppress her laughter.Reducio

Alexandra adjusted herself to face Kaitlyn as they sat together, heads huddled conspiratorially. They were well hidden by the shadows cast from the tall windows, and well out of view of anyone, ghost or living, who would wander into the Great Hall. When she spoke, she tried to keep her voice lower than usual, her accent fading around the edges into something much softer.
“What was it like?” She tilted her head, curious, “To grow up in a boarding school? I mean, I know Hogwarts is similar, but I figure in the Muggle world it’s a lot different.” Hogwarts is more magical, she thought, At least for starters.
Alexandra smiled as Kaitlyn kept speaking, her freckles bunching up around her nose and making her wide eyes into little slits in the shadows, “Of course you can call me Alex! I’ve never had a nickname before, did you know? It was always ‘Alexandra’ or some of my friends would just call me ‘Grey’. I think my parents are quite attached to it actually, since I was named after Alexander the Great. What a silly thing for my parents to be so interested in, a Muggle warrior, but they quite liked him.” Alexandra went red, her hand flying up to her mouth. Her nails sparkled dully and flashed as she spoke, “Sorry, I know I can ramble at times. I hope you don’t mind!”

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn made sure to stay next to Alexandra the entire time, facing her, as their heads huddled together. The did not have anything to do with her being scared. She was actually quite mesmerized by how the Great Hall looked despite its creepiness. Her politeness told her to remain facing her dormmate. While, the fact they were out of bed past curfew, they also wanted to keep their voices low. She was already a soft talker, but thought it would be best to whisper.
Letting out a quiet giggle, Kaitlyn smiled. “I don’t t-think it’s that much different than here. It i-is a school of all girls. We shared a d-dormitory, like we do. Similar to the o-one we’re in, the room was a g-giant open space will all of us spread o-out in the room. We had a lot of classes a-and activities. Since it is a C-catholic institution, there were r-religion classes, and we had to p-pray. There was no magic, however,” she shrugged.
“Oh, I d-didn’t know that. Well, I’m h-honored to be the first to give you a n-nickname, if you don’t mind, Alex. It does s-seem rather strange to be named after Alexander t-the Great, but your parents must have had a r-reason,” Kaitlyn replied. She gave Alexandra a bright smile. “I don’t mind the r-rambling … please, you don’t have to sensor y-yourself in front of me. If you wish to ramble, I’ll l-listen. I also hope you don’t mind me rambling s-sometimes, too,” she giggled quietly. Her stuttering was noticeably slowing down.Reducio
