It was almost midnight, and Anthony had grabbed a couple more books from the shelves of the massive Hogwarts Library. He had always been one for late night studies, and tonight was no different. However, as he was walking down the corridors of shelves filled with countless books, he noticed something that he didn't notice before. It was a section of the library cut off from the rest, it was deep within the library inaccessible by a metal gate. Out of curiosity, I tried to touch it and try to open it. Unfortunately, I was greeted with a magical shock on my hand. "Ouch!" he exclaimed, "What's with all the magical protection?" Confused, Anthony looked around for more clues, he saw that the gate was lined with runes. "Could this be what is causing the magical protection?" he thought. The runes then started glowing, then morphing into familiar letters spelling out, Restricted Section: No unauthorized witches/wizards beyond this point. "Well, that explains it." He thought to himself. He grabbed his books and hurried away, curious as to the secrets that lie beyond those gates.

Anthony eventually made his way back to the main lobby of the library he had snagged a couple of books regarding Charms, Transfiguration, and his Defense of the Dark Arts Classes. However, he did also end up grabbing a book titled, Astronomical Events of the Wizarding World, which highly intrigued him. He sat down and there were barely any students, giving the library a peaceful mood. As he was settling in for a solo late night study session, he felt a light tap on his shoulder...

Malin might have had a reputation for being clumsy and loud, but when she was in the library, it was like she was a different person.
Of course, she still tripped over nothing and was often hitting her toes when she dropped books, but she was otherwise quiet as a mouse.
She moved quietly through the bookshelves, several books already in hand.
Transfiguration for Dimwits, Magical History for Muggles, Explosions and How To Prevent Them.
She was missing one, however. One she had seen earlier in the day, but had forgotten to grab before leaving the library.
Astronomical Events of the Wizarding World.
Malin had always liked, no, loved astronomy. That and the fact that she was trying to learn as much as she possibly could about magic and wizards was enough for her to pursue the book in the late hours of the night.
After roughly ten minutes of searching for the book, she stumbled across another student a Ravenclaw by the looks of his robes. She scanned the books he had acquired.
And there it was. Astronomical Events of the Wizarding World.
Malin, having rarely ever feared embarrassment -or other people for that matter- went up and tapped him on the shoulder.
"Excuse me, but are you nearly finished with that book?" She questioned, pointing to Astronomical Events of the Wizarding World.

"She's delightfully chaotic; A beautiful mess."

Anthony turned to see a Gryffindor girl about the same age as him, as were all the other students he had interacted with this year. She had an interesting color of hair that almost reminded Anthony of a golden honey, and she had a pair of thin reading glasses similar to his own however they seemed a little big and quite comical. She asked if he was still using the Astronomical Events of The Wizarding World book he had just picked up. He did read a little bit before he even sat down but he still had quite a few things that he needed from that book.

However, Anthony thought that there might be another book that may be of particular use. He was always jumping around from subject to subject and from book to book to learn as much as he could. He jotted down a few more notes in his journal, specifically marking areas of a small circular object that he had sketched and writing notes down on their importance. He then closed the book and held it out in front of him with one hand. "Yeah, I'm just about done with this book." Which was more or less a lie but Anthony was good at improvising and knew multiple sources of similar information. Besides he didn't want to be rude. "Now, if you could just point me back to the Astronomy Section of this massive library, or better yet if you could help me find the Astronomical Tools as well as the Mapping The Cosmos book I would most appreciate it. "

He gave her a warm smile and hoped that this wasn't too much of a favor to ask...

"Now, if you could just point me back to the Astronomy Section of this massive library, or better yet if you could help me find the Astronomical Tools as well as the Mapping The Cosmos book I would most appreciate it." River had barely heard the boy's request before the words slipped past her lips as she walked past the library table, "Section A, Bookcase 13 on the left, 5th shelf from the bottom, 4th book from the right for Astronomical Tools."

She glanced at the spectacled boy who was standing near Malin Penns, a girl she had recently befriended, "Mapping the Cosmos is in Section D, Bookcase 4 on the right, 2nd shelf from the top, 6th book from the right." She remembered reading through the books a few days prior for an astronomy assignment and the details had already been embedded in her brain, much like all her other memories due to her Hyperthymesia.

I hope I don't sound too snobby, she thought, I am just trying to be helpful.

"Hello, my name is River Luxley," she held out a pale hand to the boy for a handshake as she glanced over at Lin, "Hey Lin, I did not expect to see you here." Her typically icy-blue eyes softened to a calm grey at the sight of her friend.

Malin smiled brightly at not only being able to burrow the book from the boy but also the fact that her friend was here.
Malin smiled softly at River, "Hi, River." She greeted, then thanked the Slytherin girl for the detailed directions, appreciating how River could seem so scholarly and formal, yet so soft towards her friends.
She padded over to the section River had said, grabbing the books Astronomical Tools and Mapping the Cosmos and bringing them back to the boy.
"Thanks again, River." Malin thanked the girl again, her voice soft with a small twinge of fondness for River.
She turned to the boy, pulling her reading glasses onto her head like unused sunglasses as she spoke, "So, the astronomy books," She began, "School or hobby?" She questioned. For Malin, Astronomy was one of her favourite classes and she often read Astronomy books from the library as a hobby instead of for school. She was curious as to whether the boy liked Astronomy for school purposes, or, like her, as a hobby. Malin could sit and read about Astronomy for hours on end, which was impressive for her as she could barely sit still for one measly minute.

Anthony turned slightly surprised at the sudden sound of the voice. He saw approaching a Slytherin girl with smooth black hair that looked straight with subtle curves or waves to it. He was actually quite impressed with the Slytherin girl at how she so vividly remembered the exact location of the books he was looking for. She then quickly greeted the Gryffindor girl, seeming to know each other and then the Gryffindor girl - whose name seemed to along the lines of Lin, which seemed more like a shortened version of her name - went on and headed into the labyrinth coming back a few minutes later with the books Anthony needed.

"Oh, um, thanks!" Anthony said, still mildly shocked at both the detailed instructions and the fact that the Slytherin girl was, Helpful? Both of his parents had been to Hogwarts - with his mother being in Gryffindor and his father being in Hufflepuff - and their descriptions of the Slytherins that they encountered were less than tasteful. Anthony tried to keep an open mind about people but couldn't help but let his parent's words influence his actions towards Slytherin students. However, it seems that this one girl is changing his perspective on Slytherins forever.

He shook her hand as she introduced herself as River Luxley, "Hey River, I'm Anthony. Anthony Kingsmage. Nice to meet you. You're the first Slytherin that I've met this year, and not be rude at all I wasn't expecting my first interaction with a Slytherin to go well. My parents always told me that they were..." he paused for a moment. "Let's just say less than kind. I've actually seen myself sometimes as more of a Slytherin than a Ravenclaw, mainly in terms of Ambition. But it almost feels rewarding to prove my parents wrong."

He turned to face the Gryffindor Girl, "Obviously, you two seem to know each other. Thank you for getting me the books that I needed. Lin was it? Or is that short for something?" He then proceeded to answer her question. "These books or for more of a Hobby you could say, I'm working on something." He stopped talking about it because he realized he was about to reveal information he considered more personal. "Anyway," he said turning back to River, "If you don't mind me asking River, how is it that you could remember the exact location of the books that I needed?" He asked incredibly curious as to how she managed to memorize such details seemingly flawlessly...

River didn't quite know how to react to the boy's words about her house. She supposed many people had prejudices against an opposing house, Slytherin the worst of all from what she had seen. River guessed she could somewhat appreciate his ambition, even if his words midly irritated her, she wouldn't judge him for views pressed upon him by his parents.

Her mother, who was the only one of her parents to attend Hogwarts, has told River of her experiences in the house of snakes, and the prejudices that came with it, but this was the first time that River had been faced with them head-on. Lost in thought, she missed Anthony address Lin before turning back to her, "If you don't mind me asking River, how is it that you could remember the exact location of the books that I needed?" He stared at her curiously, amber eyes glinting behind the thin frames of his glasses.

A little unnerved by his stare, she slowly answers the Ravenclaw's question, "I have a condition called Hyperthymesia, meaning I have perfect recall when it comes to my memories. Think of it as having an internal library that catalogues everything I see, hear, taste, smell and experience, organised perfectly that I only need the slightest mention to be able to essentially 'relive' whatever I am remembering."

She glanced over at the books that Lin had fetched for the bespectacled boy, "I read both of those 4 days ago, the bookcases and shelves are numbered, so I simply need to think of which book I'm looking for and my mind provides the answer."

She set her own book that she had been carrying, her mother's handwritten copy of her book 'Occamies and the Conspiracies Behind Them by Elena Luxley', down on the table. She assumed the boy might have the Ravenclaw curiosity her mother had warned about, so she readied herself to answer any questions he might have for her. She also didn't mind spending more time with Lin, and the boy wasn't loud or annoying as she had seen from some of the other first years, so he was tolerable at the very least.

Anthony blushed with embarrassment. He had no intention of being rude, but sometimes he just speaks his mind without ever realizing it. Anthony could tell by River's reaction that she had been mildly offended by the comment. "I'm so sorry, I never had any intention of being rude. I just sometimes speak my mind without realizing it and I don't realize what I'm saying may be mean or offensive without even realizing it." He tried to explain, hoping that his explanation may help to clear some things up. "Again, I am so sorry. We can still be friends, I mean if you want." He immediately stopped himself from saying any more.

Anthony listened carefully as River explained how she had Hyperthymesia. Anthony could have sworn he had heard that term before but couldn't quite remember where from. One thing was for certain, Anthony himself definitely didn't have Hyperthymesia. "Wow," He said. "I bet that makes some things incredibly easy. But what happens if you witness something terrible, like if you were at the battle of Hogwarts when Voldemort and his Death Eaters killed hundreds of students? Would you just remember every detail of the event?" He resisted every urge to ask another question about her Hyperthymesia, although Anthony found it extremely unique and interesting he didn't want to offend her again.

Anthony then noticed her Incredibly Interesting Ring. It seemed to have runes similar to the ones Anthony saw with the magic guarding the restricted section of the library. He wondered if they had any connection, or what sort of magic the ring may possess. He tried resisting every urge to ask another question, but a warmth suddenly filled him and again it seemed to be emanating form his wand which was in his robes left pocket. "I am so sorry, but if you don't mind me asking," He said with confidence that even surprised himself, "I am very intrigued by that ring you have, specifically it's runes, do you mind perhaps telling me a bit more about it?" He said, almost cutting himself off at the very last letter to prevent himself from asking any more questions.

He just grabbed his notebook and jotted down a few notes regarding what he had just learned, as well as theories and possible connections of the runes, and then flipped back to the page of his personal project, further planning out the blueprints to his device he was creating. When River started talking, he closed his journal and listened carefully...

"I'm so sorry, I never had any intention of being rude. I just sometimes speak my mind without realizing it and I don't realize what I'm saying may be mean or offensive without even realizing it." The Ravenclaw boy was quick to apologise. He seemed earnest in his regret at his somewhat rude tone, so River decided that such a small slight wasn't worth holding a grudge and metaphorically swept the issue under the rug.

He seemed infinitely curious at her explanation of her unique memory and quickly asked, "I bet that makes some things incredibly easy. But what happens if you witness something terrible, like if you were at the battle of Hogwarts when Voldemort and his Death Eaters killed hundreds of students? Would you just remember every detail of the event?"

River hummed slight as she thought of how she wished to respond to that, "In simple terms, yes. I would be able to recall every face, action, spell and death that was around me, every drop of blood spilled would be permanently imprinted in my psyche, no matter how much I would wish to scrub it clean of the image. Any reminder of that day could potentially cause me to essentially relive the entire ordeal all over again as if I had gone back in time." While she did enjoy her memory and the perks that came with it, River was in no way ignorant of the consequences of remembering every detail of your life. A few rather gruesome deaths among the magical creatures at home were still quite disturbing to her, even if her mind healer had worked with her over the years to ensure that those kinds of memories would not disturb her daily life.

River watched curiously as he took out a notebook and began writing something down, presumably about the things she had just spoken about. He glanced at her rune-covered ring. "I am so sorry, but if you don't mind me asking," He suddenly said, he seemed surprised at himself, if the startled look on his face was any indication, "I am very intrigued by that ring you have, specifically it's runes, do you mind perhaps telling me a bit more about it?"

She looked down at the silver metal wrapped around her left index finger, the runes etched into the metal more obvious in the light of the library, "They are runes that symbolise family, love and protection. My father had it carved a week before I started at Hogwarts as a reminder that he and my mother were always caring about me, loving me and wishing to protect me. I have a few other items in my trunk that have other Norse runes on them as well. I assume you have an interest in Ancient Runes? Will you be taking the course in Third year then?"

River was quick to answer Anthony's questions, he found her Hyperthynesia to be oddly interesting for whatever reason. Perhaps he had found a new spark for an interest in Wizard Psychology, he would definitely try to find a couple of books regarding that subject. Anthony shivered and shuddered at the description on how she would remember the Battle of Hogwarts, now that he thought about it she would remember even the smallest details of any traumatic events such as childhood trauma or death of a loved one.

Anthony thought about it for a little longer and was actually glad that he himself didn't have Hyperthynesia. That would mean he would remember every detail of his Grandmothers Funeral, as well as her lats days and last words that she said to him. Actually, that last one was burned into his memory. "Please take car of your Mom and Dad for me Ok?" where her last words to me. It was a promise that he made to her when she was in the hospital, a promise that would be forever etched into is memory and a promise that he would not fail to deliver.

River explained how the runes on her ring were Norwegian and that they represented, Love, Family, and Protection. A highly interesting concept which he wrote down in his notebook, perhaps the runes had no connections to the ones guarding the restricted section. But the runes looked to be of similar origin so this may provide some more use.

He teared up as he was thinking about this but quickly tried to wave the feelings away and wiped his tears, hopeful that he didn't cry too much in front of River. The last time he had cried in front of someone whom he considered a friend was on the Hogwarts express. He had not bumped into that student since but was hopeful that they would meet again sometime.

Feeling as if he was showing too much of this to River he turned away pretending to read one of the Astronomy books that River had helped him get earlier, he felt a rushing sweep of cold within him that was often associated with the feeling of witnessing death, a feeling that was first truly felt during his Grandmothers death. However, that cold feeling was soon taken over by that same filling warmth emanating from his wand filling him with something that he desperately needed. Hope.

He calmed down after a couple of minutes and he turned back to River, "Sorry, um to answer your question," he said addressing Rivers question about Interest in Ancient Runes and taking that class as Third-years. "My interest in Ancient Runes is relatively recent," he said briefly looking back towards the restricted section of the library. He could still see the faint purple shine of the runes in the library's candlelit atmosphere. "However, yes I've been studying them for a little bit and have grown a mild interest in them. I am excited to see what we may learn in the Study for Ancient Runes class as third years."

He then looked out one of the stained glass windows of the library and saw the light of dawn beginning to enter the room. "Oh, dang is that the time? I think I may need to go and get ready for tomorrows, or I mean todays classes." He said as he began to exit the library through the massive iron-reinforced wooden doors. "Dang," he said to himself, "I really need some coffee. Maybe I should've asked her if she would want to go get some together sometime. Anyway, I need to get ready for class."

As he left, one final thought was in his mind, "Are we friends?"
