“Bye!” Devon called out, as she skipped out of her apartment carrying her gym bag with her soccer uniform in it. Standing at the railing, she breathed in a happy sigh of relief. Today was her first soccer game and she was very excited for it! The young blonde-haired girl giggled as she descended her apartment complex and down to the subway. She rode in silence, giddy and happy, typing away on her cell phone to her older sister. Her siblings were always so worried about her. Since mom and dad were busy a lot, the siblings watched out for each other. Being the youngest in the family, she was watched a lot.

After a while, Devon arrived at the soccer field. She giggled at it’s wetness and shrugged. Being wet never bothered her. She went to go get changed. She exchanged out her dress and sandals with her soccer uniform and cleats. By the time she emerged, she had already seen another girl there. ‘Is she going to practice before the game,’ she thought. She quickly jogged over to where the girl was. “Hi!” Devon greeted her brightly. “Are you planning to practice before the game? Do you mind if I join you?” She asked, as enthusiastic as ever.

Devon smiled brightly at the girl’s acceptance of practicing together. ‘I don’t normally get here this early, which may be why it feels a little weird. But, I’m glad she’ll let me practice with her. Otherwise, I’d be very bored,’ she thought. “Thank you so much!” She exclaimed with a giggle. She went over to where the girl was, kicking around the ball and trying some moves. “Nice! You’re fast,” she smiled, hoping this girl would like her enough to talk after her compliment. And maybe even become friends? ‘I hope I don’t scare her away.’

Smiling, Devon listened as Alice introduced herself. “Hi Alice. I’m very pleased to meet you. My name is Devon Wallen. And, on my gosh, your family owns a shake store? Shakes N’ Smiles? That sounds awesome! And you help your family make the shakes? Oh, that is so cool! You must know a lot of delicious flavors. Where is it? I don’t recall seeing it near my apartment complex,” she took a moment to breathe after her excited rambling. An apologetic look graced her face. “Sorry for peppering you with questions, I get excited way too easily. For me, I love soccer, too. I also like to read. Oh, and I play the violin and dance … not together, but I love watching videos of people who could do both at the same time,” she replied, with a laugh. As she was talking, her smile never wavered, and she seemed to have so much energy, while talking.

Devon giggled at Alice’s response. “Thank you, and yes, I find them enjoyable,” she smiled. “49th Street. I live in 6th Avenue. We’re not that far away, but far enough that I never went by that shake shop. I also take the subway often, so I likely didn’t see it. Do you mind if I come to visit?” Her green eyes widened at Alice’s offer. “Oh, cool. I’d love to learn, if you don’t mind,” she smiled, brightly, bouncing with excitement. ‘That’s presuming she doesn’t mind my weirdness. But, I don’t seem to have bothered Alice, yet.’ She rather enjoyed having shakes. There was a shake bar a few blocks away from her apartment that she used. But, if Alice didn’t mind her presence, perhaps Shakes n’ Smiles would become her newest favorite spot.

Hearing Alice’s plan, Devon nodded in agreement. “Yes, I’m okay with that,” she smiled brightly at Alice. She quickly stretched her legs before catching up to Alice and walking together toward the middle portion of the field. She nervously played with a stray strand of her hair. “Thanks for playing with me,” she said, earnestly. She hoped this was the start of a wonderful friendship. Even just between the shared parts they valued, it was already starting too look promising. At least, that was what Devon thought. ‘And I hope Alice agrees.’
