πaking her way through the corridors, Bex peered out one of the many wide windows as she passed, scowling as the snow swirling outside the glass continued it's relentless assault on the Hogwarts grounds. She longed for the warm, easy days at the start of term where she had spent most of her time, including meals and studying, lounging blissfully by the lake.
In general, she had never been very good at sitting still. It was one of the many reasons why she wasn't very keen on leisure reading, nor was she any good at board games, puzzles, and the like. An object in motion tended to stay in motion, and as her Grandma Vera always said, Bex had learned to run far before she'd ever learned to walk. As such, she could only study in the library for so long before the now familiar "walls closing in on her" feeling started to rear it's ugly head; she'd developed a fondness for studying on the floor of the first year greenhouse, basking in its unseasonable warmth as if she were a turtle sunning itself on a rock, but as she had no desire to trudge through the cold, wet misery that was Scotland today, she would have to make do and find other accommodations within the castle.
A few months prior, she'd stumbled upon Alyssea Brown dancing in the Hogwarts Ballroom, and she'd made a good dozen or so visits to it in the aftermath, seeing as it provided one crucial benefit to her that few places in Hogwarts ever seemed to: it was almost always empty.
While she was a social creature by nature, practicing spellwork (if one could truly refer to her unfortunate attempts in such a way) was something she much preferred to do alone. When she inevitably failed time and time again, her only solace was that at least no one else was there to see it.
Unlike her previous visits though, there was someone in the ballroom today. An older boy - though how much older, she wasn't sure - dressed out of his school robes in a t-shirt and jeans. It was difficult to discern much more about him though, as he had contorted himself into a shape that Bex could not imagine was in any way comfortable.
Her step-dad, Leo, did a lot of yoga; perhaps this was what the older boy was doing as well? If so, he was proper good at it, with his shoes pressed up against the wall at around her head level, and his back bent backwards in an arch towards the floor, hands pressed flush to the ground over his head (or under his head, depending on your perspective.) He'd formed a little coma, or a bridge, with his body, which was pretty cool. But the boy did not look very happy, and actually looked rather unwell, so perhaps he'd gotten stuck like that? Perhaps his talent was also his curse.
Bex made her way over and stood above him, peering down into his upside down face.
"Hullo down there. Is this on purpose, or are you experiencing a medical emergency?"

"Shit. Feckin'. Damn. Stupid. Wand." The thick-headed boy cursed as he sat ass over the tea kettle. The Hufflepuff looked like he was attempting a very impressive wall handstand to the untrained eye. Both feet were stiffly pressed against the wall, unmoving against the porous stone wall. One hand firmly planted against the ground, the other only a fly's pecker away from the handle of an oddly placed wand. "C'mere you lil' shit-" His fingers wiggle, attempting to extend his reach by the millimeters needed to sneak it closer. He could feel the wand with the tips of his middle finger, but as if to taunt him, the damn thing slowly rolled even further away, laughing at him. The Hufflepuff's eye twitched as he imagined breaking that damn thing in way too many inventive ways.
There was no swift rescue from this position that he had managed to put himself in. No amount of torturous introspection would be enough to stop the rivers of lava running through Jack's biceps. The life of a gravedigger wasn't easy, but the long shifts of mindlessly unearthing the flesh-stained hulk of long-forgotten carrion did create massive gains in the boy's physique, not that he even realized. But don't even begin to mention the ungodly hours. His boss was indeed a slave driver.
All the boy wanted to do was climb the damn wall, and now he was cosplaying as a feckin' crescent moon. The boy's face contorted into a nasty snarl, still glaring at the taunting wand listlessly rolling to and fro. His mess of brown hair floated listlessly away from his forehead, scraping lightly against the tiled floor of the Ballroom. It couldn't have been more than five minutes of mindlessly cursing and dislocating his shoulder for just that extra few millimeters of reach that would be required to recapture his long-lost asshole of a wand.
The Ballroom's silence could never repair itself because of the constant expletives and grunts escaping Jack's mouth. If only his mother could hear him now. She would not be proud. Even with the liters of blood flowing to his head, brain, and ears, there was something different about the rhythm he had built for himselfβfootsteps. Footsteps creating a discordant symphony cut across his internal music. The vacant emptiness of the room created an empty echo that bounced around the giant walls, like ripples created by dropping stones into a pond.
Jack's red face twisted as he attempted to take a gander at the intruder, to his embarrassment. An upside-down child, how wonderful. The boy tried to inspect the kiddo, but all he could feel was the vitae rattling his brain more than usual. "Naw, I just wanted to see what it would feel like to be a feckin' bat. He grunted out in the thickest Irish accent, usually reserved for when he found himself between a rock and a hard place. After only a few additional futile reaches for the wand, the boy looked back at his new spectator: "Well, are ya' gonna stand there, or are you gonna help me out?" He rasped, his face growing more cherry-like by the moment.

πt was both funny and a little bit sad watching the older boy struggle, getting progressively angrier as he tried and failed to reach his wand. Bex couldn't understand why he didn't simply detach from the wall and go get it, which made his rather rude behavior towards her even more aggravating. Had she herself made the comment about wanting to be a bat, well- She probably would have meant it. She was just like that. Maybe she was being overly defensive, but the immediate annoyed tone he'd taken with her, and the expectation that she should be helping him, when he hadn't even asked or articulated what he needed before set off her admittedly very short fuse.
She'd been called out on it once before, having once just stood and watched as a boy fell flat on his ass while taking care of the weeds on the grounds so many months ago. Don't just stand there. She didn't want to think of herself as a selfish person, but she'd been finding her curiosity outweighing her empathy more and more. It was a facet of herself that wasn't pleasant to look directly at, and made her feel inadequate and small. It was easier to react with anger than with introspection, and as such she took the older boy's words much more personally than he had likely meant them.
"You want me to get your wand?" She asked, eyes following his unsuccessful attempts to reach it. "I'm not your servant, you should at least ask me nicely. Or better yet, just stop playing around the wall and go get it yourself."
Regardless of his response, her own intrigue would win out in the end and she'd reach down to grab his wand, whether to acquiesce to his request or to just keep it and rub it in his face, if he'd chosen to keep behaving like an ass.
Except- and this is the part that's hard to articulate. She's not sure what happened, exactly. She'd done any number or reckless and frankly ill-advised things this year. Her duel with Raizel, flying with Avery, launching herself at a student that had just bombed a biscuit decorating event; the list goes on and on. She'd done some things that she'd consider to be quite risky, and not once had her wand ever tried to stop her. She was not aware that this was something that a wand could do.
Yet, as she reached down to pick up the older student's wand, it was as if her own wand radiated danger back at her in bright neon letters. Startled, she skittered backwards away from the wand instinctively. She had literally no clue what on Earth that was. Tentatively, she approached the wand again and slowly picked it up. It didn't try to stop her the second time around, but as she held it she knew with complete certainty that her wand did not want her to arm the stretchy boy across from her.
"Huh." She said, completely ignoring all proper, respectful wand etiquette and turning the boy's wand to and fro in her hands, looking for any visible signs of danger. She didn't see anything, but like, this was weird.
"What do you need your wand for?" Which was perhaps the single dumbest question one could ask a wizard, but the older boy clearly didn't need it badly enough to get up and get it himself.
OOC: Bex, an idiot: this could not be about Jack or the centipede in his brain. This must be about the wand.
