Our Own Little Ball
Our Own Little Ball ♡
Finn and Markus had planned to attend the Blossom Ball together - though by the time they've arrived, they found fire, screaming, and chaos.
Finn had actually dressed up for the event - well, as dressed up as he could get considering his limited wardrobe. Before leaving his dorm, he'd sat in front of a mirror for a good half an hour, fiddling and fidgeting with his outfit and hair. Borrowing hair gel from another boy in the dorm, he'd ran it through his hair, calming the strays that often sat atop his head and giving his hair a gleam to it that it previously didn't have. He hadn't brought many clothes from home - mostly because he didn't have much to begin with, and also because he knew he'd been spending the majority of the time in his robes. Luckily, however, his mother had made him pack something decent, just in case.
His mother's 'just in case' outfit consisted of a lavender button-down tucked into black slacks (that he had only slightly outgrown, his ankles showing a bit more than they were meant to), and a black tie with little cats on it. Shelby had picked out the tie for him. The memory made him smile.
"Here we are," He motioned outward with his arms. They were a good distance from the location of the ball - so as not to experience any repercussions of the fire. The great lake was just in the distance. You could see the reflections of the moonlight dancing on the water's surface, rippling gently and fading every so often when a cloud lazed its way across the moon.

Our Own Little Ball
Markus was absolutely pleased that his father didn't send in his stuffy and extremely formal tuxedo set.
Wearing it would only restrict and limit his movements since he wouldn't want it to get ruined and dirtied by the area, which would be extremely difficult since they were staying outdoors after all. He wore a white dress shirt with a fancy royal green vest and pants, a golden chain visible on the breast pocket. He wore his slytherin tie since he forgot to mention the tie in his owl. His hairstyle remained the same and his glasses were polished and clean. He brought his violin with him, just in case the party had 'distasteful' music (even though he knew the music would be classy, he just wanted to show off to Finn), which was shrunk and placed in his pocket.
He really looked forward to the blossom ball, so he was absolutely shocked to see the event in such a chaotic state. He agreed to leave the chaos behind and go elsewhere. Of course, he grabbed two pizza slices on a clean plate before they left, just in case they got hungry. Besides it would be a shame if the pizza got burned too.
As soon as they arrived, he couldn't help but admire how amazing everything looked. The hush sounds of crickets had blocked out the unpleasant sounds and chattering from the chaos filled ball. He set down the plates on a huge table-like rock, putting his hands on his hips. A huge grin seen on his face as he looked at Finn.
"Going here was a marvelous idea! I didn't expect the ball to be set ablaze though, but i'm sure the professors could handle that amount of craziness. Anyways, i like your tie! It looks absolutely..'purr-fect'."

Finn laughed. "My little sister picked it out for me. Her name is Shelby." His voice sounded a bit wistful when he spoke her name - not a day went by where he didn't miss her. He looked down at their make-do dining set, and gave Markus a cocky grin. "I've never been to such a prestigious restaurant, my good sir." He planted his butt down on one end of the 'table' and mimicked tying a napkin around his neck like he'd seen rich people do in films. "I'd like one Sanbria*. On the rocks, please." Finn had also heard people say on the rocks, before.
His eyes moved down to the rock, then up to Markus, down to the rock again, then back up to Markus. "On the rocks!" He tapped his hand on the stone to emphasize the pun before bursting into a fit of giggles.
Finn took a moment to note Markus' outfit - at the ball he'd been too focused on the, er, fire to properly allow himself to take it in. Markus looked extremely put together, Finn realized. He felt himself blushing a bit, and a hand went to his hair to smooth it down self-consciously. He became suddenly very hyper-aware of the fact that his pants were too small and his button-down was too big. He glanced down at himself. And my tie's crooked, too!
*Finn doesn't know what a 'Sangria' is, or how it's pronounced.

Markus nearly snorted in laughter at Finn's little antics and puns. He was absolutely blessed to be friends with a guy who had a similar sense of humor as his. He was never really fond of 'fancy highbrow humor' his relatives, fellow rich acquiantances and pseudo-intelllectuals had. While he gets some of their references, he just doesn't..find the humor in them. He often felt out of place with them but as he stayed longer here in hogwarts and with finn, he started to finally feel at home.
After laughing for a few solid seconds, he notices Finn's expression suddenly change. He blinked, wondering what could've made his best mate look so down.
"You alright there Finn?"
He asked as he sat right next to the boy, the pizza slices lay forgotten on the side, perhaps something for later. He may not know what's wrong, but he did notice something other than his friend's sudden shift in mood.
"Oh, your tie is a teeny bit crooked. Let me fix it for you--"
He said as he stands up in front of the boy, the rock that Finn was sitting on was high enough for Markus to comfortably fix the boy's tie. There was only a bit of distance between the two and Markus was fully aware of it, he felt a little bit weird about it but he chose to ignore the oddly pleasant weirdness that he felt as he focused on fixing the boy's tie.
"Just in case a beautiful siren, Not mermaid mind you, comes out of the water. We need to look sharp!"
He joked while smiling as he takes a couple of steps backward, satisfied with the complicated tie knot he did on Finn.

You alright there, Finn? The genuine concern in the boy's voice was startling to him. Finn wasn't used to being on the receiving end of things, and the fact Markus had even noticed his slight shift in expression made his heart skip a beat in happiness. Finn thought nothing of this irregularity in his chest - he brushed it off immediately as a bodily reaction to genuine joy and contentment.
Then Markus was directly in front of him, his hands delicately working on the tie around his neck. The boy was so close that Finn could feel his breath on his face. This level of closeness was something he'd never experienced with anyone outside of his family. He felt heat rushing into his cheeks. He was suddenly grateful that their only source of light was the subtle kisses of the moon - he didn't want Markus to know that this was so unusual to him. He figured by this age everyone would have been physically connected with their friends and that he had fallen behind a bit. Why else would Markus be so casual about it?
Finn felt weirdly relieved when Markus stepped back, and it was only then that he realized he'd been holding his breath the entire exchange. He cleared his throat and brushed it off, giving Markus a smile that he hoped didn't convey his mixed emotions. "Why does it have to be a siren? Do you want me to be killed? That would be quite a horrific way to end such a lovely day."
Suddenly feeling a bit too shy to look at Markus, he instead let his gaze drift back to the distant waters. He remembered how he'd learned in his explorer's club that a giant squid lurked just under the surface, and he briefly pondered if the squid was having a nice night, too.

"Nope! But i did partially want to see a toad get all enchanted with a siren like the funny fishermen on those old moving pictures you call 'movies'."
He said with a grin, noticing how Finn stared at the water, he's probably thinking of the things he learned from the books or something about the Great Lake. Comfortable silence, at least that's how Markus views it, along with the sound of the soothing light waves of the lake and the presence of his favorite person made him feel contented. These quiet little moments never cease to surprise him. In the past, he always thought that silence betweem two people caused nothing but awkwardness which was why he would do his best to keep conversations going, no matter how dull it would be. But with Finn, he learned that not all silences are that bad, some can actually be quite comforting.
However Markus didn't just come here to the lake, well-dressed and all with his violin, to just stand there with Finn. A grin found its way to his face as he brought out his violin from his pocket, the said instrument slowly increasing in size to its normal state.
"Since we're all dressed up and i wanted to do something to show off, i decided to bring my beloved violin. I was originally planning to play it in front of everyone buuuut, i guess i wouldn't mind a private show. Especially since this is your first time seeing me play. I'm tempted to play All Star but since you're the audience, you get to choose. Any song, muggle or not, i could definitely play it. Don't worry, first song is free of charge"
He said with a playful wink. Readying himself and his violin, feeling confident in his playing abilities.

Our Own Little Ball
As Finn gazed at the distant lake, he took a moment to reflect on his first year at Hogwarts. It had seemed to go by extremely quickly*, the memories blurring together, but as he reminisced he recognized them fondly. From the knots turning in his belly when he'd first broke into the train platform, to all the late nights spent with Markus discussing the varieties in their cultures, and tonight - his heart felt full.
Markus' offer at a concert was exactly what he wanted to hear. As he turned to look at his best friend, he smized and put his hands in his pockets, knowing that right in that moment, there was nothing more he wanted than to be listening to Markus play violin at the campgrounds of Hogwarts Castle.
Finn racked his brain for a song that he felt would encapture the mood he was feeling, digging through his subconscious list of titles until he landed on one he felt was truly perfect. "The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra." Finn couldn't quite place why that song felt so right to him in the moment, but once it was out of his mouth he realized that there was nothing better suited.

"Old but Gold. Gentleman, Squid and Merpeople. I present to you, The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra. Finn, this one's for you."
Markus said in reply, mimicking the way those performers would say to their audience. He closed his eyes, taking in the cold breeze that came by before starting to play. As he played, he couldn't help but slightly sway to the music. Whenever he plays, he always pour his heart into it, especially if the song was soft and comforting. He smiled as he played, walking around as he did so, the moon illuminating his features as he walked near the shore of the lake. He seemed so calm and so peaceful, almost forgetting about the fact that he was getting a bit too close to the water. He swiftly moved away as he continued his one man waltz with his violin.
As soon as he finished, he opened his eyes. The lighting was too dark to see Finn's reaction but he sure did hope he was pleased. After all, he was quite proud of himself for pulling it off at a moment's notice. He gave him a bow, before standing right back up.
"Did you know these wizarding violins can play on their own once you 'record' yourself playing? I currently have one song recorded and i was thinking--"
He wasn't sure what he was thinking or why he even thought of it in the first place, but he really wanted to dance with Finn. The thought just made him feel all comfortably warm for some reason, which was something he couldn't understand. Maybe it was because he...missed dancing? He usually did it when their family was invited to such events but for some reason, he rarely enjoyed it. His dance partners were usually nice and polite but he never really view it more than anything but formality. However..maybe it was different because it was Finn? He had a connection with Finn, he was his best friend, he figures that maybe because of that he'd want to dance with the other male.
"Maybeeee...you know...you'd like to dance with me? I mean, since we're all dressed up and a ball isn't a ball without dancing, might as well dance ourselves right? Besides it would be like..practice for the yule ball! When we're all grown up and got our own dates, we'll be an amazing dancer by then--"
He's never danced with a guy before, so this would be a first if he would agree. He wasn't sure as to why he felt the need to be so defensive and explain too much though.

Our Own Little Ball
Finn felt his lips tug into a smile as Markus mentioned him by name. Despite him being the sole audience member, he could picture it in his mind - Finn was surrounded by thousands of excited people, wizards and humans alike, all staring up at adoration in Markus. Then, the spotlight would fall on Finn, reflecting in his sapphire eyes, and Markus would say it into the microphone. This one's for you. Everyone would turn to look at him, and pride would burst in his heart.
He didn't need others to feel pride, however. Markus looked to be enchanted by the music. His feet elegantly glided across the grass. In Finn's mind, he saw a trail of gold following his footprints, swirling up and encompassing Markus in its glowing light.
In what felt like a blink of an eye, it was over. Finn blinked a couple times, trying to remove himself from the world of fantasy he had momentarily been trapped in. He was glad Markus couldn't see his expression - it was surely rather embarrassing.
Dance? It took the word to flitter throughout his head before he was able to recognize just how much he wanted to dance. He wished to join Markus in the land of glitter and musical symphony and light. He had felt completely overcome by it just watching.
"Let's dance," He agreed. His voice sounded distant - he wanted to hear Markus's playing again, whether it was recorded or live. He didn't even realize how quiet he'd been in comparison to his friend.

Markus felt himself beam with joy at Finn's positive response.
A smile found its way to Markus' face as he sets down his violin, tapping the back of the instrument gently. In an instant, it floated into the air, soft music playing as he walks and holds out his hand towards finn. He felt his heart skip a beat as soon as he held the other boy's hand. He took the action a step further as he entwined their fingers together, he placed Finn's other hand on his waist and placed his own left hand on the other male's shoulder. They were once again close, there was only a little bit of distance left between the two and the funny pleasant feeling that he felt earlier in his heart came back. This time, instead of putting it at the back of his mind, he embraced it wholeheartedly. He may not know what it really meant, but he knew it had something to do with being with Finn and he liked it.
Markus took the lead as they both danced, swaying lightly to the music, enjoying the warmth that Finn's hand provided. He tilted his head slightly to look up at Finn. He noticed how bright his blue eyes were under the moonlight and how his skin seemed to glow, he couldn't help but stare for a few moments. Suddenly, his brown eyes met his blue ones and he suddenly felt somewhat embarrassed for staring. He smiled sheepishly before looking at their entwined hands instead. A rosy tint of pink seen in his cheeks if one were to look closely.
"This..this feels nice."
He admitted, feeling the warmth in his insides contrasting the slightly colder weather. He has never felt this oddly comfortable dancing with a kid his age before, he enjoyed it. He was glad he and Finn went here together.
