Closed A book buddy!? PV Matilde O’Fionnagan

As it was about a month into the school year, Matilde was finally adjusting to life at Hogwarts. She could navigate the corridors much better now, at least, she no longer had to give herself twenty extra minutes to find her classes as she had the first days of school. She even felt like she was getting used to the structure of her classes. Being homeschooled until Hogwarts, it was all very foreign at first. She had to admit that making friends was not as scary as she had first though, and there were many nice people at Hogwarts. Despite this, she had yet to connect with anyone in her house.

Regardless of her growing comfort with the castle and its goings on, on this October weekend she was feeling rather homesick. She longed to be outside, with her pets and the wind and nature. Though she loved her plant extravaganza of a dorm, on days like today it just wasn’t the same. So she made her way to the grounds.

Matilde burst through the castle doors, inhaling the autumn air and breathing a sigh of relief. Turning her face to the sky, she did a little spin. Back home, before he moved away, Matilde and her best friend used to spin like this, trying to outlast the other, seeing who could go the longest without falling. Matilde continued to spin, until the world tipped and- she was on the ground. She laughed out loud. Matilde brushed the grass off herself best she could, but her jeans sustained some damage. Oh well, magic could surely remove grass stains. When her head had stopped spinning, she got up and walked toward the lake.

The grounds were definitely one of Matilde’s favorite places at Hogwarts. She sat down at her favorite tree and looking around, spotted another girl a ways away. She knew she had seen her before, but she had never spoken to her. Matilde was pretty sure she was a Hufflepuff. She was pretty sure she had a flower name, maybe Lily, or Rose? She seemed a little shy, but in Matilde’s experience, the quiet were often some of the best people.

Matilde walked up to her, and smiled when she saw what she was reading. “Ooh, I love The Tales of Beedle the Bard!”

Violet was not really surprised when the girl actually came up to talk with her. She had pretty much expected that. She was sure she had seen the girl somewhere, probably a Hufflepuff like her too but she couldn't pin point her name at all.
The girl smiled towards her showcasing her love for the book Violet was reading.
Violet said rather excitedly, "Oh this book is absolutely lovely. I could never grow out of it. I have heard these stories time to time, over and over again. However everytime I read it, I feel spellbound. Each tale in here is so beautifully written. It makes me want to read it again and again. Though this is not my own copy, I borrowed from the library a while back."
As soon as Violet said all that, she realised she had said too much in her excitement. She visibly blushed, feeling embarrassed about how she just sounded previously. She looked down over to the side, looking at the red-yellow leaves trying to calm herself down and meanwhile, also hide the embarrassment she was just facing.

After a moment or so, Violet asked the girl infront of her, "Do you like reading books? ", her tone now being calmer.

Matilde smiled as the girl gushed about the book. She was a bit surprised, in a good way, at how much she was talking. “Me too! My grandfather used to read it to me before I knew how to read myself, so it’s very nostalgic. But it doesn’t feel like a little kids book.”

The girl seemed to recover her composure at bit, then asked Matilde if she liked to read. The young Hufflepuff’s eyes brightened. “I do! What other books do you like to read? I love Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as well. I like wizard books, but most of my favorites are muggle books. I think my favorite is Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” Matilde trailed off when she realized that if the girl was a pureblood, she may not have read any muggle books. She couldn’t even imagine. Matilde had always been in a bit of a weird place as a half blood wizard. She sort of had one foot in the wizarding world, and one foot in the muggle world. It was very weird to switch between the two. It didn’t bother her when she was little, but that was starting to change as she got older and more aware of her place in the world. She realized that likely wouldn’t be the case for pure blood students.

Despite her embarrassment, Violet smiled at the positive response she got from the girl, now in front of her. Books had always excited Violet, even though shy, she could never stop herself from gushing on and about books.

The girl in front of her answered Violet's previously asked question in affirmation and it made Violet think of a possible friendship that could develop between the two girls. The girl went on telling about her favourite books, books she had never heard about, of course the girl had mentioned they were muggle books, but she had read some of them in her mother's library, and the one she mentioned wasn't one of the 'some of them'.

As she was asked a question, Violet replied, "Well, out of all the wizard fantasies I have read, this book is just one of my favourite. My mom would narrate this story and get me to sleep. Don't mind me asking, but what is Percy Jackson and the Olympians anyways? You mentioned it's a muggle book , and I'm a pureblood so I have never heard of it. It sounds interesting though. Is it related to Greeks? I I have read other muggle books, Jane Austen and Agatha Christie are my favourite authors. They write so beautifully while maintaining the suspense. Muggles use these things called guns in Christie's novels, it is so intriguing.

As Matilde had thought might be the case, the girl had never heard of Percy Jackson, she was a pureblood. “It is related to Greeks! It’s about demigods, the children of the Ancient Greek gods. They live in the present day, though, in America. It’s a wonderful series! I love the characters, and their stories. They go on such great adventures. My dad’s a muggle and my ma is a witch, so I’ve read a lot of both muggle and wizard books. Percy Jackson is actually kind of relatable for me, in a weird way,” said the Hufflepuff with a laugh. “You’ve read Jane Austen and Agatha Christie?” Matilde said, a bit of wonder in her voice. “That’s deadly! I’ve never read anything by either, but I’ve always heard those were complex books. You must be very smart.” From the authors she had named, Matilde guessed that the girl liked, or at least, had mostly read, classical books. Matilde tried to remember classic books she had read. “Have you read Little Women?” she asked. Matilde wondered if the two girls could use their shared love of books to become friends. She wondered if they had anything else in common. “What else do you like to do at home, besides reading?”

Violet listened with interest as the girl told her all about Percy Jackson. "Woah, the series looks quite interesting. I would like to read it too. I don't know where to get it though. By the way, why do you think it's relatable to you?"
The girl in front of her then went on adding about how Jane Austen and Agatha Christie were high-end books and to that Violet replied, "Well, those were the only type of books, I found in my mother's library, but I found a way to love them. I remember not understanding a lot of words in Agatha Christie's books and would have to wander around my house, trying to find anyone who could explain. Having disturbed every house elf with it, my mother finally decided to sit beside me for an hour or so answering all my doubts on a daily basis." She giggled slightly, as she said that. It seemed like the girl in front of her was as curious as Violet was and was as excited to find the commonalities between them as she asked Violet question after question. "Yes, I have read Little women. It's such a lovely book! What do you think is your favourite quote from that book?" , Violet asked assuming the other girl had read the book too.
The girl infront of her asked her about her other hobbies, and Violet was able to reply spontaneously, "I love dancing! I wasn't taught how to dance, but I still love it. I love playing the piano too. My dad taught me how to do so! How about you?"
Now it was Violet's turn to ask questions. "Silly of us, we have been talking since long and yet, I didn't catch your name. I'm Violet, Violet Rohr. How about you?"

Matilde’s eyes lit up as the girl said Percy Jackson and the Olympians sounded very interesting. “I have the whole series, I brought them with me to Hogwarts. I’d be happy to lend them to you if you’d like!” Matilde loved to share her favorite books with her friends. It was the perfect way to find new books.

Matilde listened intently as the girl explained how she learned to understand and love the books. She laughed with her. Matilde smiled when the girl said she had also read Little Women. She was a bit surprised by her question about her favorite quote, and contemplated for a minute before responding. “I think it would have to be… ‘Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty.’ Or something like that. I’m not sure if that’s exact,” she said, a little self-consciously.

The girl had a ready response to Matilde’s question about hobbies, too. “I love to dance too! Mostly Irish dance. I also play the cello, and I like to paint and draw.”

Only when the girl asked Matilde her name did she realize that they’d never introduced themselves. “Oh you’re right!” Matilde said, laughing. “Nice to meet you Violet. I’m Matilde O’Fionnagan. Or Tilly, though I don’t mind either.”

Violet sent a bright smile towards the other girl's way as she offered to lend her books. "Oh! That would be so appreciated. The series you have mentioned has genuinely caught my interest. Thank you!", Violet said gratefully. Hoping, she is not invading the girl's personal space, Violet added, "We can be book buddies if you want! That way we had get to read so many more books!"
Violet was not always friendly. She was often termed as a cold personality. But, books always managed to do their magic. She would get excited and start blabbering on when it came to books. In fact, her first-ever friend became her friend because of books. The two kids, then, had gotten impressed by the other's zeal towards books.

As the strawberry blonde girl recited her favourite quote from 'Little Women', Violet could not help but complete the quote loudly herself. She added behind as if in a daze, "I am so sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for.." Getting out of her trance, she continued, "Oh yes, you quoted it right! It is indeed exact. "

The other girl told Violet about her other hobbies and Violet could not help but wonder how similar they are. She exclaimed, "You play the cello? That is so cool! We must have a cello-piano duet sometime!"

Violet giggled as Matilde laughed at them forgetting to introduce themselves and replied, "It is nice to meet you too, Matilde! And your name is so sweet-sounding! Do you mind explaining the origin? "

So sorry for such a late reply! And take your time replying to this! I saw your post in the report of your absence thread!

“Of course!” Matilde said, returning the girl’s smile. “Book buddies? That sounds absolutely grand!” Matilde was glad that Violet seemed to be just as excited as her even though she seemed a little shy.

Matilde smiled as Violet finished the quote. “Yes, that’s right. So good.” She felt a little less nervous when she had been able to recite it correctly.

The young witch couldn’t help but notice the subtle differences between her and the girl. For one thing, she was quite surprised that Violet had a house elf. She had never met anyone else who had one. Even so, despite their differences they had so much in common, between dancing, music, and books. It was amazing, really. She didn’t know much about Violet yet, but she already liked her.

Violet said they’d have to play together sometime, which Matilde thought was a wonderful idea. “Like a wee band! If such a thing exists, with just piano and cello,” Matilde said, contemplating. She shrugged.

Matilde couldn’t help smiling when Violet complimented her name. “Thank you! I’ve always liked it. It’s Scandinavian and means 'strength in battle.’ My grandfather on my mother’s side is from Norway. My ma also liked it because of the meaning, I think.”
