One in the Same
Rowan had just moved in with his aunts, and this meant change in household rules. With his father, there was no consideration of a pet. The only animal in his household was purely functional. In this case, a large snowy owl, who’s only purpose in life was to send letters and packages.
However he was with his aunts now. And you know who didn’t make the rules? Rowan’s father. Syblia actually approved of him getting a pet, as he needed a companion to keep him sane when he wasn’t at school. Or a companion to keep him calm at school, in some cases. She was fully aware of his situation, and troubles with crowds.
However when he entered the store and looked around... he didn’t know what he was looking for he realised. Like with everything else, he often got overwhelmed with choice. So when the cheery woman came up to him, he was slightly alarmed.
“Hello dear. What might I help you with today?”
She looked slightly perplexed by the contraption he was sitting in, however upon seeing how it worked, she seemed to not care much anymore. She was more concerned about him, thankfully.
“Well.. I’m looking for a pet, of course. I don’t think a rat or a toad.”
“That’s quite alright. It narrows down your options, mm? Let’s start with the remaining categories. Owl, cat, or pygmie puff?”
“Erm- What’s a pygmie puff?”
She smiled, and waved for him to follow. As she spoke she walked over to an open enclosure with a multitude of the colourful fluff balls.
“These little guys are pygmie puffs. They’re quite resilient, as you may see. They squeak quite a bit, and like being thrown around.”
“Ah... no thank you.. a little too... flamboyant for me.”
As Rowan looked to the other two categories, he thought over what he would really want in a pet. Something that would be able to deal with his condition, to start. Low maintenance. Preferably something he didn’t have to watch constantly. Though he already knew he wouldn’t let it out of his sight, so that wouldn’t be too much of a problem. Though something attractive too. And he wanted to be able to snuggle and hug it occasionally.
That ended up taking the owls out of the mix. So when Rowan turned back to the kind woman in front of him, he smiled gently, having a better picture already.
“A cat, I think, would be lovely.”
“Of course dear. Let’s have a look then.”
As they moved over to the other section, Rowan caught sight of her other half. The male seemed to be taking care of the kittens and their mother. Out of curiosity, Rowan rolled over to look. He usually wouldn’t go for something so young, but he would just look maybe.
Inside there were the various breeds. Some of them obviously more playful than others, and some obviously plainer than others. He got a good idea of everything by looking at their parents and the kits. However one stood out to him.
A relatively young one was limping along, falling on itself every few seconds. This was because it had three legs, instead of one. Rowan’s eyes went wide, and he gasped softly.
The male followed his gaze, looking at the various normal kits before he finally caught sight of it. The woman did likewise, speaking up first.
“Ah yes, he was born like that... poor thing. Would you rather one of the other Siberians? They’re quite beautiful and a lovely family pet when they grow... what is it dear?”
The husband had raised a hand to cut her off for a moment. He then picked up the small creature and walked over, carefully passing him to Rowan.
“I think he would be a prefect fit, if you would like him.”
“I’ll take him.”
Rowan’s voice was soft as he spoke, cradling the small kitten that waved it’s little paws at him, before it finally settled against his chest, purring softly.
