Viva was feeling very tired this morning. She yawned as she walked along the corridor. She had a reasonably sized break until her next class, and was just taking a little walk to clear her senses. She had her book bag with her, and was swinging it from side to side as she walked. Suddenly, she heard the sound of a voice. A familiar voice. Katie? Viva thought, walking quickly towards the sound. She peered into a classroom, and saw her friend sitting at the teacher's desk with a sketchpad. And was that a bunny on the floor next to her?

Stepping inside, Viva began to smile. "Hi, Katie!" she said happily, "I haven't seen you in a while! What are you doing in here?" She walked a little closer to her friend, adjusting her book bag over her shoulder. "And where did that bunny come from?" she asked excitedly, pointing at the adorable grey ball of fluff on the ground, drinking water. "It's SO CUTE!" She bent down, coughing a little as a cloud of dust swirled up around her, and began stroking the bunny's head gently. She didn't feel so tired anymore, not now that she was with her friend.

Kaitlyn was so busy with her drawing, she was not paying attention to what was going on. She was sketching the board with its fancy runes, wondering what they meant, while humming under her breath. All the while, the cute noises of her bunny drinking from her bowl gave her calm and tranquil thoughts. ‘Ah, I could see why having a pet could be so rewarding. I’m glad I found my bunny,’ she thought. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Demeter’s ears twitch.

Before she could look up, Kaitlyn heard a girl’s voice greet her. She looked up and saw her friend enter the classroom. “Hi Viva! I know, it’s been a while since I saw you! I was walking by when I saw this chalkboard and I just had to draw it,” she giggled. She beamed at Viva’s discovery of her bunny.

Demeter’s nose and ears twitched. She slightly recoiled a little at the touch but quickly relented and relaxed.

“Isn’t she cute? I found this Mist Hopper bunny at the edge of the Forbidden Forrest. I was outside … in the snow, practicing yoga. Yes, I know that was probably kind of weird. Outside in the snow in a tank top, shorts, and sandals, but that’s what I was doing when I found Demeter. She hopped over to me when I was in the middle of a pose … I kind of fell and bruised my rear. I had trouble sitting for a week.” Kaitlyn admitted.

Viva smiled. She loved how Katie was such an artist. She stood up from petting the bunny. "Ah, good for you! It looks great so far," she said, leaning over to examine the drawing. She listened to Katie's explanation of her bunny, and smiled again. "Oh my goodness! Katie! I hope you didn't get sick!" She giggled. "It's freezing out there! And sorry about your... um... rear!" Viva laughed out loud this time. "Demeter is the cutest name too, I love it!" She bent back down to pet her gently, hoping the bunny would like her.

"So, how's it been going for you?" she asked, making conversation. "How're your classes and everything? I think Astronomy isn't that bad, I just don't like how late it is. I need my sleep!" She laughed again. It was fun to be with Katie, just hanging out and chatting.

"I definitely want to get a pet sometime, I was thinking of buying a cat," she said softly, thinking of her dream pet. "My parents wouldn't buy one for me." Viva hung her head. "So I have to save up the money myself." She looked back at Katie. "But that's ok! I'm kinda close to enough money," she shrugged half-heartedly.

Katie flushed lightly at Viva’s compliment. “Thanks! I wish I knew what they mean though … isn’t there a class in our third year that helps with this?” She asked, thinking out loud and then shrugged. She giggled at Viva’s reaction. “I actually had just finished running. I was still pretty warm from that. But, yes, I felt the cold in my feet, mostly. I know it may sound weird, but I kind of enjoyed it,” she laughed. She giggled at Viva’s comment about her bunny. “Yes it is! I liked learning about Greek Mythology before I came here, so I think it’s fitting.”

As Viva pet Demeter, Demeter relaxed into the movements. Her eyes closed, and she briefly extended her back in pleasure. Then, she continued to drink from the bowl.

Kaitlyn giggled, watching her cute little pet. Her eyes looked back over at Viva and smiled. “Mostly well. I’m improving … I think. I like Astronomy. It is a little late, but I like the class. My favorites are potions and Herbology. I know, not the best when it comes to a perfect outfit,” she laughed. “What class is your favorite?” she asked.

“Aw, I’m positive you’ll choose an amazing pet … hopefully less strange than how I did,” Katie smiled. “I never asked my parents for a pet … but, well, I am a muggle-born. The more magical pets were kind of out of the question. That’s good. I hope you’ll be able to afford one, soo,” she replied, her smile brighter. ‘I think Viva would do well with a pet,’ she thought.

Viva smiled at her friend. "Yes, there is a class about ancient runes, I believe!" she said excitedly. "It sounds really interesting." Viva tilted her head at Katie's next statement. "Oh my," she said, her eyes wide. She laughed a little. "Ooo, I liked to read Greek Mythology too! What was your favourite story? I always liked the one about Echo, the girl who could only speak the last words spoken to her. She met a boy, but couldn't talk to him, so had to watch as he slowly became more and more vain and eventually died. I think it's a terribly sad story, but I always found it interesting how it explained how the echo got it's name." Viva was glad to find another common interest she had with Katie. She always forgot that Katie had grown up in the muggle world, just like she had.

Her smile grew as she felt the bunny relax. Aww. I love her so much! Viva looked back up at Katie. "Oh, I'm sure you're improving! And I like Herbology too! But my favourite would probably be Charms. I don't really know why, I just enjoy it a lot!" Viva laughed. "I hope I can get a pet soon, too. I think I might be close to earning enough money for one!" She was very excited.

Kaitlyn nodded to Viva’s words. “Yes! And I think these do look interesting,” she smiled, as her blue eyes glazed back to the runes. “Oh, yes, that was a cool story, I enjoyed that one, too,” she giggled. “I like Homer’s Odyessy. Of Odysseus’ travels after the trojan war. I really liked near the end, where Odysseus had to battle a cyclops, and survive Circe,” she replied. It was a big book, but still entertaining.

Demeter twitched her nose, her head facing towards Viva, as she enjoyed the petting.

Kaitlyn smiled,as she heard of Viva’s favorite classes. “Yay to loving Herbology. I do like Charms. Learning spells is fun, even if I’m not very good at it. I find that I have to try even harder to successful cast a spell,” she lamented. She giggled to Viva’s statement about getting a pet. “Aw, I’m sure you’ll earn enough money soon. I’m positive you’ll choose a great one,” she smiled encouragingly.

Looking back at the runes in the room, Kaitlyn then started talking poetically, as if she had practiced it.

“Sitting in a dark classroom
Only lit by the pale moonlight,
as the midnight hour strikes.
A lone student is hunched over a chalkboard.

What first turned out to be an artistic rendiiton,
Filled with excellently drawn circles of variable widths,
Each one inscribed in another circle.
All to make a telescoping pattern.

As if you, the viewer are looking up at the night sky,
At all the celestial bodies, and the bright stars,
Millions of miles away from us, and yet they spark such intrigue,
By those of us that study them from here on the ground.

At the very center of the telescope bares multiple runes
Etched into the board.
One touch and the chalk doesn’t smudge,
Doesn’t erase,
Doesn’t move,
Almost like it’s burnt right into the board.
All in different colors, different sizes, different orientations.

All in a language mere students do not recognize.
Is it an insult?
A declearation of love?
A statement of the student’s day?
A frustration of school yard bullies?
A lovesick teenager?
Or a teenager high off the euphoria of kissing the person of their dreams?

Not matter its origins, these marks stayed the test of time,
To be found over and over again,
By witches and wizards to guess,
What does it mean?”

Kaitlyn flushed. “Ah, sorry Viva, that sounded bad, didn’t it? I may need to go back to the drawing board with that one."
