Prompt: House Elf
Artform: Writing
Made using: written on a google doc
Explanation: Sage learns about house elves from her step-mum!
“Today’s lesson: House elves,” Cassie declared to Sage one windy midday at their breakfast table.
“House elves?” Sage repeated, confused. She’d never heard of a house elf before. “What’re those?”
“House elves typically work for rich pure-blood families and Hogwarts to clean, serve, servant stuff,” Cassie explained, writing out the information for Sage to take note of.
“So… they’re servants? Why are we learning about them? They must not be that important,” said Sage cluelessly.
“No, Sage. House elves are quite important! Their loyalty even in difficult situations is inspiring, and they can’t just run away from their owner. They have to tough it out.”
“So?” Sage was getting tired of the lesson. It didn’t matter to her just then.
“So,” Cassie started, “you should learn about them because they do a lot of behind the scenes work for our lives, even if we don’t see them.”
“But why are they so important?” Sage whined. “This is boring, Cassie!”
Cassie took a deep breath and put her hands down on the table. “Okay. Let me try to summarize this: House elves are incredibly important creatures to the wizarding world. They serve as servants to wealthy or important wizarding families. They are an underrated race, and work harder than we give them credit for. Does that make sense?”
Slowly, Sage nodded. “So… we should respect them?” she asked.
“Yeah. They deserve it.”

Prompt: Potioneering
Artform: Writing
Made using: Written on a google doc
Explanation: Sage is practicing her potioneering and accidentally messes up the potion, causing her quill to turn bright and sparkly.
“Ugh!” I grumbled, throwing my hands up. “This is impossible!”
I was practicing potioneering for a test later in potions, and everything about it seemed to be impossible. The measurements were so difficult to achieve and the wording in my textbook made zero sense to me.
Cassie told me once of a story when she was at Hogwarts of how she loved potions. I was upset that I couldn't do as well as she did.
Eventually, I gave up on trying to do what the book said and started to throw random ingredients into the caldron. I didn’t pause even when the liquid started to shimmer like glitter. I threw another handful of a salve I couldn’t pronounce and the bubbling potion exploded into a bright light, the liquid staying inside the caldron.
I ducked when the potion burst ino light. “Aah!” I cried, jumping to the floor.
When the light was gone, I hesitantly approached the potion. The light was gone, but the bubbling and sparkling was not. I stuck my quill in to stir it since the spoon I had been using had been thrown out of the way when I ducked. When I stuck my quill in and pulled it out, it was impossibly bright and sparkling like glitter.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I muttered as I tried to wipe off the potion from the sparkly quill. No luck. “Well,” I decided. “I suppose now I have a glittery pen.”

explanation: Cassie, Kora, and Sage move into their new house

Why’d we have to leave?” I whined to Cassie once again.
“I told you already, so we can be us without worrying about your father,” Cassie reminded me.
Kora paid us no mind as she ran ahead into our new home in Kent, England. “Come on, Sage! It’s pretty here!” she squealed.
I looked at Cassie. “It isn’t home,” I mumbled.
Cassie looked sad, but managed to smile. “I’m sure it will be eventually. I moved around a lot as a kid, and I managed.”
“But I just want to go home!”
Cassie sighed and grabbed a box from the back of the car. “Here.” She took one for herself. “What would you say to planting a garden in the backyard after we’re settled?”
“A garden?” I repeated.
“Yeah! It could be fun!”
I shrugged. “Where’s my room?”
“Second floor third door on the left. The first one’s Kora’s room. The first on the right is mine. Second on the left is you and Kora’s bathroom, and the other is my office.”
“Mum?” Kora called from inside. “Where are you?”
“I’m outside, Kor! Come help us with the boxes!” Cassie replied. “Come now, Sage. You’ll get used to it soon enough.”
I was hesitant to walk inside. I wasn’t used to this place that was supposed to become my home. It was almost like leaving would truly mean I had let go of Mum. I wasn’t ready for that. I didn’t think I’d ever be.
“Sage? Are you coming?” Kora asked, rushing out and grabbing my hand.
I looked at the house in front of me, then back at the little girl holding my hand. My sister. Not ‘step’ not anything like that. Just my sister.
“Yeah. Welcome home, Kor.”

explanation: Sage talks about how running is basically her second home

My home away from home is always moving, always up at the starting blocks awaiting the starting gun. Wherever I run, it becomes my home. My feet pounding against pavement, track, earth anything falls under the category of my home. Adrenaline rushing, muscle burning, sweat dripping into my eyes, but my head clear, my anger gone, peace.
Running came in a dream. Cassie and Dad had just gotten married at the time, and I was missing Mom more than ever. I fell asleep, and I saw her standing there. “Mum!” I had cried, shocked to see her standing there.
She didn’t speak, but simply smiled at me. She smiled like she was seeing a long lost kid, which I guess she was. It had been a long time, and if it was really her I was seeing, it had been five whole years since she saw me. She waved for me to follow her. She started to jog, and I followed her. It was hard to run with a running blade, but I kept trying until I was worn out and had to stop.
But the setback didn’t stop me. I got the blade, and I kept going.
The dream showed me how far I could go, and running quickly became my home away from home.

prompt: protector of your dreams
artform: writing
made using: written on google doc
explanation: sage talks about her mom and she protects her dreams

Even dead, my mother managed to protect me through my dreams. Any nightmares I might have had of that horrible day were gone thanks to her. There weren’t fears of darkness or worry about rest. There was just peace. Peace brought by my beloved mother.
Mum always loved peace, or so I’m told. I can’t quite remember. I have to assume it isn’t pure luck keeping the nightmares at bay. It’s her.
Cassie told me Mum would never stop smiling down at me and laughing at the jokes I make, smiling at my accomplishments, crying if I have a bad day. She’d always be there, and she proved that by keeping my dreams happy.
I didn’t realize she was protecting my dreams until I was five, but even then it was hard to believe. “Isn’t death forever?” I would think. But Mum proved that wrong. She kept helping in hidden ways I may not ever recognize. She knew that, and she clearly didn’t care.
I loved her for that. I only got two years with her, but I still loved her for all the small things she did for me. She wouldn’t let death stop her from being my mum. She never let anything stop her from protecting me.
Death doesn’t stop someone from loving you.

explanation: I wrote about when Sage received the picture of Kora and her before she left for Hogwarts!

“I don’t want to go,” Sage mumbled into her pillow.
Cassie had followed her upstairs with Kora in tow. “Why?”
Sage sniffed. “I don’t want to leave you and Kora.”
“But you’ll be learning magic!” Kora exclaimed. “That’s more fun than just sitting around at home!”
“But I won’t be seeing either of you every day!” Sage wiped a tear out of the corner of her eye.
Cassie smiled gently. “I had this made for you last weekend.” She held out a picture of Sage and Kora.
The picture was magical, moving, showing Sage and Kora laughing. Cassie was in the background smiling at her two daughters, proud of how they were shaping up to be.
“I love it,” Sage said with a grin, taking the picture from Cassie. “Is this from the park?”
There was an old park not far from the house that Sage and Kora enjoyed going to. It was usually empty, leaving the girls plenty of space to play alone with no trouble from anyone.
Cassie nodded, smiling at her step-daughter. “Why don’t we pack it for you so you’ll have something to remind you of us at Hogwarts?”
“No,” Sage said quickly, gripping her picture tighter. “I want to leave it in my room until I leave.”
Cassie hugged her. “I’m glad you like it. We’ll miss you at Hogwarts.”
“I’ll miss you, too.”

prompt: Death
artform: Writing
Made using: written on google docs
Explanation: Sage narrating a time in the far future when she’s old and is surrounded by her family as she passes away peacefully due to old age.

I still remember the shattering glass. That never left me, never. Never could I forget my own mother’s death. The accident.
Now it was time for the walls of my glass house to break in like they nearly did when I was two.
I knew it was coming. Knew I had done enough. You could never be prepared for this, but I was as much as I could be. I was happy with myself.
I had done enough in my life. I was proud of that. I welcome the thought of rest.
“You can let go,” someone out of view whispered next to me. “It’ll be okay.”
I smiled slowly. “Oh, I know. I taught you all to be strong; it would be a shame if none of you could remember that.”
And then there was Kora at my side. “You were good, Spice.”
Spice. My old nickname as a child. I hadn’t heard that name in a long time.
Hugs came all around as I smiled at them, remembering all the good times. All the laughs, memories, all of it came flooding back like a tidal wave.
“Why can’t she stay?” asked one of my grandnephews.
“Great-Aunt Sage hasn’t been too well. Plus, she’s older. She’s been around a while, kid,” his mother answered.
“But why can’t they fix her?” he sobbed.
“Sometimes you can’t fix everything.”
I smiled sadly. “I’m sorry. I wish I could stay, but I can’t.” My words didn’t help. “I’m not in pain.”
Kora held my hand and I smiled at everyone one last time. “Goodbye,” I whispered. “Thank you for everything.”
Shatter.
