Arc Perscivious wrote: 9 Apr 2019, 07:36 Arc Perscivious moved towards the Ravenclaw table as the cheered died down and a new name called towards the Sorting Hat. “Thank God for Ravenclaw,” Arc muttered under his breath. His father, Markus Zenith Perscivious, would not stop talking about it if he got into Gryffindor. He had forced him to go to the forest and did physical activities to rub his ‘Gryffindorliness’, as he liked to call it, to Arc. Again, thank God!

The boy smiled curtly to the many other Ravenclaws that greeted him. One overly enthusiastic boy raised his hand up for a high-five and Arc gave one. He would never leave a hand hanging, that would just be rude. That was something his big brother had said a long time ago. Talking about the guy, how was he doing? Arc already missed him. He sincerely hoped that the big fella was doing fine at home.

The dark-haired boy finally found an empty spot for himself. He sat down and most of the boys and girls around him had already focused their attentions back to the Sorting Hat. Some of the other Ravenclaws, though, gave him handshakes and introduced themselves. Arc might have an impeccable memory, but through all the events and people he met, he would certainly forget one or two of them. He would do his best to at least commit their faces, though.

Looking at the food in front of him, he realized that he hadn’t eaten anything for quite some time now. But he wasn’t hungry at all. All the adrenaline was still coursing through his blood and he didn’t feel like eating anything. His father had told him many times to eat more or the ladies wouldn’t like him, but truthfully, he couldn’t care less. At least, for now... Arc took a small bite of the custard cake before looking around for someone to talk to or something.

If only he had brought a book in here!
Merle had been picking at the food in front of her when someone new approached the table. She glanced up from her plate, eyeing the newcomer. She felt rather awkward surrounded by strangers, her usual distraction, her notebook, was in her luggage and was likely already in her dorm. She figured that if she couldn't disappear into her own little world, she might as well try to make friendly conversation. Besides, she didn't know anybody yet.

She smiled at the boy, "Hi, what's your name?" Great work Merle, now what? She fidgeted for a split second, unsure of where to go from there. Then she remembered something she'd overheard on the train. "Did you hear that apparently there's this giant squid in the lake? Personally, I'd love to see it." Small talk was a good go-to when one didn't know what to say. "Is there a certain class you're looking forward too? I really wish we could take Divination this year, but Potions sounds fun too. I'm still kind of in shock, I think. I mean, just a month or so ago, I didn't even know magic existed! Well- I guess I kind of thought it did, but not on this scale. Sorry, I'm rambling."

Merle suddenly realized she hadn't even introduced herself! She stuck out her hand, "Oh! I'm Merle, by the way."

Arc just blinked for a few seconds as he watched the girl rambled.

"Hi, I'm Arc Perscivious," said the boy while firmly shaking Merle’s hand. He had to raise his butt off the bench to reach the girl’s hand as she was sitting across the table. "You can call me Percy, the Devious Dime, or Arc, whichever floats your boats." he said with a smile of his own.

The scrawny kid let go of Merle’s hand and sat back on his bench. ”And it’s alright to ramble,” he continued speaking. “As a matter of fact, I like watching people ramble. That’s like number five on the list of what I like to do.”

Arc took another bite of his custard cake -which was actually better than he thought it would be- and took a gulp from his glass of water. That, he probably needed more. He should've drunk the glass of water first before jumping straight into a custard cake. He felt so stupid for someone going into Ravenclaw.

“As for the Giant Squid, my brother told me that it was actually pretty kind. So, you don’t have to worry about it.” Unless she wanted to swim at the lake alone or threw a firecracker to the lake or something. But the girl seemed sane enough. She was a Ravenclaw to boot. She should have the wisdom not to do such silly things.

“What makes you look forward to Divination? I personally wanted to learn Charms as it seems very useful,” said the dark-haired boy as he took another bite of the custard cake.

"Well," Merle briefly considering her answer, she hadn't really put a great deal of thought into why exactly. "I suppose it's the idea of being able to learn about the future. There's so much I'd like to know. Apparently, people don't take the class seriously. Can't imagine why though."

Merle looked at the platters of food, grabbing a slice of treacle tart. Her dad used to make it around holidays and she considered it her favorite dessert. As she took a bite, it burnt the roof of her mouth - maybe magically kept hot? - so she set the tart down on her plate. Internally, she was a bit disappointed she couldn't eat it yet but she rather liked her mouth being unburnt.

"Charms sounds fun too. Do you know what sort of stuff they'll teach us to do? If your brother knew about the squid though, then I guess that would have to mean he went here too. Is your family magical?" She gingerly took a bite of her tart, happy to find that it had cooled somewhat to a reasonable temperature. "Mine isn't. My mum's from America, but that's not nearly as interesting as being magical."

"Say, what's with the nickname 'the Devious Dime?'" Merle asked, putting up air quotes as she said the nickname. "Sounds a bit like a superhero name if you ask me."

Arc nodded along as Merle talked about the Divination class. It was true that with Divination, witches and wizards could glimpse into the future, but a self-fulfilling prophecy was also a thing. The boy was more a fan of logic and ‘shape-your-own-destiny’ thingie, so, he wasn’t fond of Divination. But who knew? Maybe Arc would enjoy the class when he got into it in his third year.

The kid noticed the girl tried to eat a slice of treacle tart before putting the tart back down on her plate. Was it too hot?
"Charms sounds fun too. Do you know what sort of stuff they'll teach us to do? If your brother knew about the squid though, then I guess that would have to mean he went here too. Is your family magical? Mine isn't. My mum's from America, but that's not nearly as interesting as being magical."
Hmm, let’s see,” said Arc, finally finishing his custard cake. “They’ll be teaching us a lot of stuff in Charms. Just from the top of my head, though, among other things, we should be learning the dancing feet and repairing charm, the levitation charm, lumos and nox, obviously, locking and unlocking spell, and the umbrella spell.”

Of course, Arc knew the whole syllabus, but he didn’t want the girl to think he was that into Charms. That seemed just too...nerdy. Not that it was bad to be a nerd.

And yeah, I guess half of my family is magical. The Perscivious family is a pureblooded family. A very strict one at that. They rejoiced at the fact that none of their family member is well, non-magical. Not even a squib. I can’t believe that is true, though. They could very much muffle the truth. So, it pains them to no end when my father chose a muggle to marry.

It would thin the bloodline, they had said. Such a stupid concept.

Thankfully, both my brother and I were a wizard, so, we could keep our family name. My little sister had shown signs of magic as well. I seriously don’t know what will happen if one of us is not magical,” said Arc slightly chuckling.

His mother had convinced all three of them that nothing bad would ever happen. That the Perscivious wouldn’t be that vicious. But their father didn’t share the same sentiment. Which was kind of scary since he was from the family. He should know better. ‘You could even spell super vicious from Perscivious’ his father once said. We couldn’t.

As for my moniker… It’s not so much a superhero name as it is a villain name,” said the boy, leaning forward with a slight conspiratorial grin. “Don’t you think so?”

Merle listened rather intently as the boy listed off a string of various charms. Her mind raced with the possibilities that would open once she learned the spells. An umbrella spell would be endlessly useful in the rainy season, but Merle knew she wouldn't be able to use it. She'd heard the warnings about using magic outside of Hogwarts.

Hearing of a levitation charm, she thought back to one of the defining magical incidents before she got her letter. After a stressful school day, Merle had screamed into her pillow to relieve stress, unwittingly lifting her cat, Flipper, into the air. She finally turned around to see the cat land, shaken, on the bed. Flipper hadn't been harmed but somehow seemed to suspect Merle had been behind it, and didn't forgive her for over a week.

Her mouth twisted into a faint frown as Arc spoke of his family. Were strict magical families common? Surely they wouldn't actually harm their own family for being born without magic - it would be outside their control!
“As for my moniker… It’s not so much a superhero name as it is a villain name. Don’t you think so?”
The conversation - and Merle's thoughts - quickly switched tracks.

"Now that I think about it, I suppose it does sound a bit... devious," Merle smiled to herself, rather proud of what she considered to be a well-timed pun. She wondered what her superpowered name would be, but found herself at a loss. "Surely there's a story behind the name? Personally, I'm imagining one of those bank robbers that over-exaggeratedly sneak around in old cartoons."

Not interacting with/reacting to anyone. Open to interaction.

Hengist was famished. Dinner was what he needed. This year had been much more difficult than his first year. Not just the schoolwork, which was definitely harder than he thought it would be, but the just the stress and strain of being around so many people was particularly taxing for him. Hengist was never great at social interaction and the managing of friendships. Being from a small town, the sheer amount of people that he is constantly surrounded by at Hogwarts is a shock that he'll likely never really get over. It didn't help that is lack of social graces meant that he had drifted apart from the few people that he had managed to interact with at school last year. He couldn't fathom how he could still feel so alone around such a large crowd. Still, he was getting by. The constant letters from his little sister were his biggest saving grace. Even though his schoolwork was taxing and lengthy, he never failed to write her letters at least once a week. Telling her about a place she'll probably never be able to experience filled him with sadness, but her seemingly endless enthusiasm and positivity always seemed to put him at ease. So as he sat and ate some beef stew, he thought about his sister's last letter and what he'd write back.

Heroes don't exist and even if they did, I wouldn't be one.

Charlie hopped down from the stool and quickly walked over to the Ravenclaw table after getting sorted into Ravenclaw. She was so excited! Her mom was a Ravenclaw, and so she knew she had a 50/50 chance to get into Ravenclaw. She had been waiting for this moment forever. Her older half-sister, Dakota, who had graduated Hogwarts 5 years ago, had told her all about Hogwarts, and how great it was. Dakota had been sorted into Slytherin, which suited her perfectly. Charlie's dad was also a Slytherin, but Charlie always felt she was book smart, and Ravenclaw suited her well.

She sat down at the head of the table and looked around. This place was everything that she had imagined and more. She had read her sister's old Hogwarts, A History already, but once she saw the castle, she knew that a book couldn't tell all it's secrets. There was so much to learn and explore. She couldn't wait to write her family and tell them all about it.

Her stomach rumbled and she looked to see how many more students were left to sort. Not many. Announcements would follow soon after and then she could eat! She smiled at a couple of students she sat with on the train. They had all been sorted in different houses though.

Morrel rushed off the stool and to the Ravenclaw table shyly. He was never this shy before but for the first time, he's surrounded by people who are wizards/witches (besides his parents) and not muggles. Back in Ireland, all of his friends were muggles.

Neither of his parents was a Ravenclaw. His father was a Hufflepuff, and his mother was a Slytherin. So he had no idea what to expect, he could only ponder on all the infinite possibilities that could happen in the next few years of his life at Hogwarts. He wanted to be a Hufflepuff, and follow the footsteps of his father. But he did feel that Ravenclaw suited him as well. The sorting hat chose him to be a Ravenclaw for a reason.

As he walked to an empty seat, fellow Ravenclaws congratulated him, cheered and gave him high-fives. Morrel relaxed a bit, wiped off the sweat from his brow and sat down. Once he settled down at the table, he examined the great hall. It was exactly what his parents described it to him, except it was even more amazing when he can experience it for himself. He was in awe. His eyes swept the table, looking at all the students. He then noticed a girl right beside him looking quite ravenous, staring at the gold plate. So he decided he might as well introduce himself to her.
"Hey I'm Morrel!", he greeted with a cheery smile, offering to shake hands.

Charlie clapped loudly as a boy got sorted into Ravenclaw as well. He looked happy but unsure, and shy as well. If it wasn't for the fact Charlie had grown up around magic all her life, she probably would be unsure of the whole situation herself. She couldn't imagine what muggle-born witches/wizards were thinking. She tried to imagine growing up in the magic world all her life, only to have to go to a muggle school in the end. It would probably be totally foreign and weird for her as well. She would be out of her comfort zone for sure. She wondered for a moment if this boy was a muggle-born. Not that there would be anything wrong with that if he was.

The boy sat beside her, and as he examined the Great Hall, she took a sip of her pumpkin juice, before setting it down and stared at her empty plate, her stomach growling again. But just as she was wondering what food would pop up in front of her, the newest addition to Ravenclaw turned to her, and introduced himself.

Charlie smiled and taking his hand and shaking his.

"Hello! I'm Charlie! I'm so excited to start my first year! How about you?" She said as she let go of his hand, turning her body comfortably towards him to talk more comfortably.

As Morrel shook hands with her, he awkwardly shifted himself around the wooden bench to face her, his back against the students being sorted into their houses.
"I'm ecstatic!! Like, I just can't imagine being in a school where everyone is a wizard. My parents were the only people I knew that was a wizard/witch back in Ireland. But they told me very little about the wizarding world. I'm still shaken from the fact that I just wore a talking hat." he chuckled. He felt as he was a muggle-born, he barely knew anything about "being a wizard".
"My father forbids magic at home, so I'm a complete alien to it.".

Morrel continued babbling on how it felt like he was an outcast in a wizard's eyes. He doesn't know or heard of any spell before. He never knew owls were used to send letters. He even was surprised when people in his carriage in the train were playing around with "chocolate" frogs and collecting cards that had "moving" pictures. But Morrel was oblivious to the cheering of the last student being sorted, and out of thin air, food of all sorts filled the golden plates and it's savoury smell drifted throughout the hall. He can see roast chicken, sausages, steak and kidney pie, and his favourite, mash potatoes.
Astonished, he said to Charlie,
"This is unbelievable!! By any chance, do you know who cooked this?"
