Adventures in the Night
It was late. Charlie knew that. She also knew that it was likely past curfew, but not having a watch or some sort of clock on her, she didn't exactly know what time it was. The perfect daughter in her wanted to go back inside, but her heart said no. Wandering along the shore of the Great Lake, Charlie thought about how she normally would skip rocks or journal, but today she just stood.
Shuddering in the frozen air, she wrapped the puffy jacket around her tighter. Charlie leaned against one of the good sized trees, thinking. She rarely had time where she saw no one and had to worry about attempting to fit in. Charlie didn't really have many friends, at least ones she saw on a day to day basis. Her one friend she felt like she could talk to was always busy getting into trouble, spending time with others, or attending some fun event. Charlie felt as if Ava was the perfect girl, perfect friend, perfect daughter... everything.
Taking a deep breath and clearing her head, she slid down the bark of the tree and plopped down on the bare ground. The dirt was cold and rocky, but the patch of dirt under the tree was clear from snow. She reached for her Defense Against the Dark Arts textbook, and opened to their current chapter on Pixies. It was dark, but light enough that she could just barely see the words inked on the page.

Adventures in the Night

Coming upon @Charlie Jacobsen at the Lake
Simon was in his dormitory, pandering over some notes he had taken about his observations with Herman when something struck him - curiosity. Did Herman, the Giant Squid that lived in the Great Lake, sleep at night or was he perhaps partially nocturnal? Perhaps, in his venture to get a photograph of him with his wizarding camera, Simon needed to go at night!
He quickly checked on Rascal, ensuring he was cozy enough and then gathered up a few things and took to the chilly night air of the Scottish Highlands, wizard camera in bag. He was ready for some night photography if it was such he case, but he wasn't entirely sure anything would come of this.
As he got closer to the Lake, he could see someone there. A student, he hoped. He thought back to when he first met Clair Fernandez and they mistakenly thought the caretaker at the time was a hag. Let this not be a hag.
But no, as he got closer he could see that she resembled someone he knew and he smiled when he did realize it was Charlie Jacobsen. "Good evening, Charlie!" he said with a smile and glanced down at the book. Luckily with his larger dilated pupils he could see her and it, one of the benefits of being a dhampir. "Is this the time and place you always come to learn about Pixies?"

Adventures in the Night
Charlie didn’t even know anyone was coming until the boy who turned out to be Simon said something. She really needed to work on her spatial awareness, but now was not the time. “Simon! Hi!” she said as she popped up from sitting on the muddy ground. She probably had dirt on her somewhere, but she was so startled by Simon that she didn’t notice. “Not usually, just catching up on some school work. I just wanted to be outside otherwise I would probably be in my common room.” She said. “What about you? What are you up to? I feel like it’s been awhile since I last saw you.” She quickly added.
Charlie closed her book and held it in her left hand, as she knew learning about Pixes in this moment wouldn’t be very helpful. Her face fell as she remembered something. Simon was a Prefect. It was past curfew. Crap. She returned her face to a neutral position, hoping he didn’t notice. Maybe he won’t remember or notice the time, she hoped, although Charlie knew that was unlikely. As she waited for Simon to react and respond, she set her textbook on the ground, next to her bag. She then quickly grabbed her book and stuffed it in her bag, then zipped it.

Adventures in the Night

Talking with @Charlie Jacobsen
"Sometimes we need some fresh air," he agreed. He adored his dormitory space - the singular little windowless room within the Hufflepuff dormitories that he could call his own and be up any hour of the night; which suited his dhampirness quite well. He also adored his Common Room as it was probably the coziest of places within the old castle. But still, there was something to be said for some fresh air and especially the fresh air of the Scottish Highlands.
Simon wondered if her fidgeting around with her book and backpack wasn't an indication that she was nervous. She was out while it was rather late but so was he - and sure, he was prefect, but this was even past his patrol time. "I often wonder if Herman sleeps through the entire night. Any sighting of him? The giant squid?" It was a name that he had heard an older and former friend of his, Alexa Mackenzie, call the creature. He wasn't sure it was official but he'd call him nothing else.
"Are you leaving already? If you're wanting to head in, by all means, but if you're wanting to stay a little while we could catch up. Tell me about quidditch and the cat. How your classes are going?" that always would appeal to a Ravenclaw, perhaps.... Simon smiled a little, hoping she'd stay and talk awhile. He wanted to get to know Charlie more as she was one of the only other fellow dhampirs he knew.

"Yes. I one hundred percent agree. Especially with my dorm and the others in Ravenclaw... One just needs time in the outdoors." She added to Simon's comment about needing to be outside. "Even as a dhapmir, I still feel the need to be out in the sun and breathe the fresh air, feeling free-er. If that makes sense." She replied, making her voice soft when it reached the word dhapmir.
As Charlie looked over the Great Lake, she took a deep breath, as if Simon was confronting her, he would have already done it. Right? Simon began talking after a short pause, and the topic caught her off guard. "Herman?! Thats what you call the squid?" She said. After a second to think she added, "No, I have not seen him. Or her. Actually, I don't think I have ever seen him."
"No, no... I'm not leaving yet. She said. " I like staying up. The moon is nice. Quidditch has been well... okay. I'm still first string keeper, and after training hard this summer I have improved a LOT. I just need to work on endurance and all of that jazz. Ravenclaw has some good players, but we are on a loosing streak at the moment, which I hope to break in our winter game." ofc, at the time the winter game had not happened, but we lost to Hufflepuff, and fast. "Our winter game is in just... 10 days! I think. If you're not doing anything you should go! We are playing Hufflepuff..." She said. "Oh, you're a broom racer right? Do you like it? How is that going?"
Simon asked her about Zara, her cat. "Zara, she's good. Just the usual, playing eating and sleeping. She's back up at the common room, sometimes I take her out, but not at night. There might be werewolves or something. Charlie knew there wouldn't be werewolves trying to eat her cat, but you never know. "Classes are good, you saw me looking at Pixies for DADA. Not much happening, just assignments and lots of reading. I have to put in a substantial amount more work than last year." She said. "What about you? How are you doing? Classes? And do you have a pet?" She asked.

Adventures in the Night

Late night talks with @Charlie Jacobsen
"A friend had told me that was his name. It wasn't until she was gone that I realized that not everyone seemed to call him Herman and I unfortunately don't know the story behind it. She was a good friend though and Herman he'll always be." It could maybe be one small little way that he could honor Alexa Mackenzie, friend and fellow Hufflepuff that had passed away one Winter break. In fact, Simon took a moment to look out to the Great Lake - the two had come here often as the girl loved sunshine and it was there at the Great Lake that he found Rascal, her little gray pet rat who was the lone survivor of the car accident that took the life of Alexa and her father. How he had had made his way back to Hogwarts still amazed Simon, but he was glad that the two had found each other.
"Yea, our broom race starts soon too. I hope I'm 100 percent by then," he said and realized his thoughts were sort of elsewhere. He probably shouldn't have phrased it like that because now it just began a new round of curiosity for the Ravenclaw, no doubt. He looked over to Charlie. "I uhh, I encountered an accident of sorts when off of holiday and visiting my father. I ended up in St. Mungos and I'm well, physically well, but my head space has been cluttered with all sorts of thoughts. Muddled, you know?" He sighed and came over and sat down next to where she was.
"I don't really remember what happened. I was hurt, perhaps some sort of accident - but I don't remember it. I only remember parts of that holiday and the parts I remember - I'm not sure they are real," and he paused. He had spoken this only with a few - of course AngelFyre and Clair but it seemed to be a thin line to walk because he didn't want to be perceived as losing his mind, nor did he really understand what had occurred. Maybe it was best to let it leave but it often crept into his mind as he searched for answers - especially on nights such as this.
"Anyways, uh, yea....my classes are going alright and I'll have to have you meet Rascal sometime. He's my pet rat - just don't let Zara eat him," he smiled to her. "He actually once belonged to that friend that called the giant squid Herman."

Adventures in the Night
Charlie smiled softly at Simon, knowing that there was a deeper meaning behind his story. She knew it was truthful, but that there was something he was not telling her. She didn’t pry because there were many things that she hadn’t told him, but not many.
"Interesting.” She said softly. "Herman." She said as she looked over at the lake, stars shimmering off of it, and tall trees reflecting. “I think I like that name. Sounds friendly for a not so friendly seeming creature.” She smiled.
Simon talked about his broom race starting soon, and Charlie began to hope he would say when it was so she could attend. Charlie had never really been to other sports besides Quidditch, which was obvious. She was Ravenclaw’s best and first string keeper, defending her hoops from the quaffle. He said something about not being 100% and a wave of concern immediately began to rush over her, wondering why he was unwell. Before she could ask any questions, he began to talk. Simon had been in St. Mungos, the hospital. He began to assure her that he was physically okay, but not mentally. He had also mentioned that it involved his father. Problematic fathers. Of course. "Well that is definitely another thing we have in common. She said slowly. "My father is… the worst. He’s a vampire, of course, and is just… yeah.” She said, unable to get all of the words out. "I hope you can get better before your race, because as long as you aren’t racing Ravenclaw, I’ll be cheering for you.” She added, sincerely. “If there is anything I can do, let me know. Also when is your race?” Charlie could tell that he was off and she wanted to do something to help. But she knew it was best to not push and let him work on it.
“Rascal the rat. Sounds nice. I don’t know anyone with a rat as a pet, but he sounds cute!”

Adventures in the Night

Questions for @Charlie Jacobsen
She asked about his next broom race and he answered but his line of thinking was definitely elsewhere - his thoughts, so to speak, were in the skies but had nothing to do with flying on a broom. He was thinking more about this vampiric father of his and the misfit group that he lived with and how that all worked. Were other vampires as his father was? Did they all live in such covens? In castles? Was their demeanor all the same?
Charlie had just stated that her father was the worst so maybe it was a sensitive subject to bring up so Simon debated with himself mentally for a bit but couldn't seem to shake off the topic of conversation he was wanting to have.
"You know, it's totally cool if you don't want to talk of him since you said he's the worst and all - but if you're able to - could you tell me more about your father? What's he like? What does he do for a career? How's your household situation different from someone else's? Who all lives with you?" He wanted to know all the details.
It wasn't every day he had the opportunity to talk with someone else who had a vampire for a father.
