Just like every year it came around, he always kind of hoped that it would skip, that maybe one day he would just not have to suffer it and he supposed this was his chance. However, that thought had been very quickly dashed from his mind as he woke to find surprises from his friends in the Regulus Dormitory. Cards, cake and ridiculous decorations lined the walls of their room with music blasting against every wall. They must have been up all morning he thought to himself regret drowning him from the inside. Putting on a brave face he took every birthday bump, every celebration and every card with a beaming smile, laughing along with the boys and making sure to seems as grateful as possible. It was a beautiful gesture after all and it made him feel like he really had family here, but that was exactly the problem.

Breakfast was disastrous at best and utterly humiliating at worse as he was surrounded by those nearest and dearest to him while they presented him with a chocolate cake lined with 12 lit candles. The cake and amount of company was already overwhelming but once the singing began he felt like he was going to instantaneously combust. He had half hoped that blowing the candles would release him from their torment but they took the cake from him as quickly as they had procured it and informed him he wouldn't be getting any until he had suffered the same punishment at lunch and dinner. His only solace was that his celebrations seemed to at the very least be annoying his enemies as much as it did him.

Continuing the day only ended in more disaster, suddenly the understanding of why the need for celebration was presented, as he learned that his friend Rowan had told everyone he was close to of the days significance. She was a literal ball of sunshine one could hardly be mad at, and what right did he have to be. These people wanted to celebrate him, there was nothing wrong with that, at least to them. Period by period the knife drove deeper and deeper into his chest, every 'Happy Birthday' and every cheery stupid smile driving him closer to a breaking point. The worst part was that none of them even knew why, they had no idea that he hadn't celebrated this day properly in years, his father and he had agreed to always celebrate on the 12th instead but of course no one knew that. Very few people even knew about his family.

It was only a matter of time before he really did explode. Luckily he had a free period and needing a release, some kind of quiet solitude where he could catch his breath he made his way towards the abandoned bathrooms. There was a reason no one came into this place, one because it was utterly vile inside failing every known standard of cleanliness possible but also because if someone was in there they were no doubt in dire need of space. While climbing the staircases and slipping inside the door he swore he could hear his name being called but the day had been so overwhelming he was hardly able to differentiate reality from fiction and was in a world of his own. Rushing towards the sinks he began to fill the basin and dunked his head into the icy water holding it there, the silence of the water filling his ears leaving him unaware of everything around him. Exactly like he wanted to be.

Looking for @Matthew Campbell
Viva was tired. She was tired of staying up late working on homework, tired of all the stress from her classes, tired of all the people, just tired in general. Walking down the corridor, she felt like she might collapse at any minute. Her usually very neat brown hair was in a messy ponytail, and her robes were wrinkled. Despite her exhaustion and haphazard appearance, Viva had a mission that she was determined to complete. Over her shoulder was her trusty book bag, and inside that bag was a very important item Viva needed to deliver.

Trying not to yawn, Viva continued on her way. She was heading to the study room, where she thought she might find the person whom she was looking for. She glanced down at the small package in her book bag, smiling as she caught sight of the tag: 'To Matthew.' Viva knew he had a free period right now, so she assumed he would be trying to get some homework done. She had already checked the library, but he had not been in there. If he wasn't in the study room, then she would have to wait because he was probably in the Slytherin common room.

She brushed a strand of hair from her face and turned the corner. Suddenly, she saw a flash of green slip inside the abandoned bathrooms. It's him! Viva thought excitedly. Then she frowned. What is he doing in there? "Matthew!" she called, running up to the bathrooms. Peering around the doorframe, her eyes filled with horror as she saw her friend. He had rushed to a sink, filled it with water, and dunked his head under.

Viva raced forward, book bag swinging and brown hair flipping into her eyes. She came up alongside the boy, and stopped. Reaching forward, she put one warm hand gently on his heaving shoulder, letting him know that she was there. She removed her hand after a minute and stood there next to him, not interupting, just waiting patiently for him to resurface. Obviously Matthew was having a hard time right now, that Viva could plainly see. She didn't know what was wrong, though. But that was okay. She didn't need to know. She could still support and be there for her friend, no matter what. And right now, it seemed like he needed a little breathing room. So, she stood there, waiting until he was ready.

Startled by the sudden weight on his back he felt the water rush into his mouth and nose and before he knew it his head was flung from the water. Choking on the water he expelled it all coughing violently and taking deep strained breaths. Once he had regained his composure he turned to see the kind though clearly concerned face of Viva Delacourt, it was a mixture of emotion she was quite used to regarding him with. Looking between her and the sink he couldn't help but burst into a fit of laughter. The whole thing seemed entirely ridiculous now that he had been caught doing it.

It didn't take away all the pain of the day but it felt nice to laugh. With all of the pain that had pent up inside him he was sure his outburst would come from rage but he felt just as much of a relief from the bellowing howls. Making himself more presentable he turned away from Viva to shake out the water of his soaked hair but as he turned back he could still feel water dripping as he spoke "Viva! What are you doing here? Sorry for almost drowning on you there it wasn't my intended goal." he jested. Talking to Viva was easy, like the world was simpler than it really was, nothing seemed complicated when she was around.

Matthew was surprised he had even noticed her now that he didn't have strands of wet hair filling his eyesight. She was not the regular picture of composure she usually presented, with her hair being tied up in a messy ponytail and eyes sunken from exhaustion. He hoped she was okay, because of course he did even when he was angry at the world he still never wanted the people he cared about to be hurt. Timidly putting on a friendly sympathetic tone he asked "Are you ok, I don't mean to offend but you look like you haven't slept in days and that's coming from someone who just tried to literally drown their sorrows!" He hoped she would understand that his comment came from love and that his cheek came through but he was off his game today so he worried he would be misunderstood.

Worrying about @Matthew Campbell
Viva stepped back as Matthew began to choke and splash about, head above the water now. She blinked, startled, as he burst into a fit of laughter. What is going on? She wondered nervously. He's clearly not okay... why in Merlin's name is he laughing? Viva politely looked away while she waited for Matthew to compose himself. She took a step forward as he turned towards her, and then flinched as she was sprayed with water droplets.

Biting her lip, Viva didn't say anything at first. She was no dummy. She knew something was hurting Matthew right now, so why was he acting so chipper all of a sudden? She peered at him through worried blue eyes. "I came to find you," she said, still looking intently at him. Not saying anything else, she shifted her foot around on the stone floor, listening carefully to his words.

Viva blinked at the sudden change in conversation. And now he was changing the topic. "Yes, I'm okay, Matthew," she said, trying to smile for his sake. She sighed at his description of her current state. "I'm not offended. I have slept, just very little, I've been extremely busy as of late." She peered at him again. "Now, why were just dunking your head in a basin of water, may I ask?" Viva knew she was sounding a little sassy, but she couldn't help it. It came out when she was worried.

Sensing that there was no way he was going to be able to get away from her questioning he decided that it was best to just come out with it. After all she had already caught him it was hardly worth either of their time to lie. Resting upon the side of the sink he sighed gently to himself as he took in the bathroom around him, it was barely functional a setting perfectly fitting his own state at present. Looking towards her, he was comforted by the sass in her tone as it cut through his attempt to hide, she knew him well enough to push past his defences.

"I needed the water, this day has been a lot and I just needed to feel the cold water fill my ears and drown out the noise. I'm guessing if you were looking for me that means you know what today is. I've never been surrounded by so many people who wanted to celebrate it, it's a lot." his eyes darted between her and the floor unable to stay put on any one thing for too long with a drifting quality to his tone as if he was barely a shred of his usual self. It was as if the second he was out of the water the world had started again and he was still stuck in this day, the day that only got harder with age.

Matthew always struggled to handle his emotions on his birthday but without his father he felt completely untethered from reality, so much so that if someone blew air at him he would drift into nothingness, like dust in the wind. Fidgeting with his nails he looked back towards Viva taking her in and properly focusing on her "I swear I'm not trying to swap subjects but you really need to look after yourself, sleep is important!" he tried not to come off as lecturing as he realistically had no place to. Then speaking up quickly before she could sass him once more he spoke, a quiet, darkness to his voice "To all of you today is just my birthday and that's brilliant. I should be so happy, but to me it will always be her anniversary. My mother... I don't know if you remember from that night, we talked through so many things. Anyways I just needed to breath."

A pause hung in the air while he adjusted his robes, visibly uncomfortable, before quickly adding on "I'm ok and at the same time I couldn't be less, does that make sense? Like this should be the best birthday in the world. I finally have friends who want to be with me and I just want to be able to enjoy myself but I don't know how." it was hard to come out but he had forced himself to keep rambling unsure of what else to do.

Trying to comfort @Matthew Campbell
Viva leaned back against a sink as well, studying Matthew as he spoke. Her eyes were filled with concern. A hard day?! It's his birthday! Viva hastily dug through her memories for any good reason why Matthew would not like his birthday. It had to be more then being surrounded by so many people. She took a step forward, watching how his eyes were darting around. As he fidgeted around (Really? Matthew was acting very strange...) and started talking about her getting more sleep, Viva turned her head and gazed at the cracked mirror of one of the sinks. She forced her memory to go all the way back to that fateful September night, the night she had first met Matthew... and it hit her like a lightning bolt. The memory of Matthew telling her sadly about his mum flashed before her eyes. She blinked, and blinked again, then turned to face him.

Of course he was sad today! His birthday was also the anniversary of his mum's death. The poor boy, she thought. Viva's heart was throbbing with pain for him, she felt his hurt as if it were her own. That had always been a strength of hers, empathy. A blessing and a curse, really. You see, Viva tended to take others' burdens on her shoulders, on top of her own struggles and hardships. She often sort of took on the responsibilities of other peoples' struggles, and had to bear the weight of that as well.

So Viva stood there in the bathroom, across the room from the boy who had been hurt as deeply as she had, but in a different way. She wasn't thinking about herself at all in that moment, all she could think of was how to make things better. And she knew, in this situation, she couldn't really do anything to fix the situation. Pain would never just go away, although many times she wished it would. The best thing she could do for Matthew right now was to support him, and to be there for him during this tough time.

Before she could say anything, however, Matthew explained exactly what she had just deduced. Viva felt a rush of understanding for him come over her, she knew what it felt like to want to curl up in a ball and never talk to another person on the planet ever again. She knew what it felt like to be vulnerable, and hurt, and what it felt like to need a breath. Viva tilted her head, still staring at him, mouth open slightly as she breathed in and out. She knew. Oh, she knew. Without another thought, as soon as he stopped talking, she rushed towards him and wrapped her arms around him in a gentle and warm hug. Tiny for her age, Viva's head barely came above his shoulder, but she still clung to him. She didn't know if this was the right move for Matthew, but she knew that whenever she was hurting, she never wanted to be in pain alone. She wanted comfort, and had never really gotten it. So right now, she was going to do her best to try and comfort Matthew.

Matthew melted into her embrace, it was sweet and comforting and more than anything grounding. That was what the needed, someone to pull him back down to the earth and show him that he was still here. He was so tired of being sad and there in her arms he felt something different, wanting the day not to be sad wasn't enough, he wanted more. Letting the tears begin to softly fall from his eyes they met the dripping of his still wet hair. It was such a simple gesture, a hug, but it meant more to him than anything.

Squeezing tightly one last time, they had just held each other for what felt like forever but pulling back there was something new in his face. An idea just beginning to crawl forth from the darkness his tears began to stop as the smallest smile began to creep on his face, the spark refilling his eyes as he started to resemble himself once more. Brushing his hair out of his eyes he began to speak, slowly at first finding his voice again but growing in confidence as he heard his thoughts form, "Thank you Viva, you always know how to make me feel seen, even when I want to hide. I have an idea, I mean it's not really even an idea more of a thought that could be an idea. This day sucks but maybe it could suck a bit less. I want to do something for her, like a memorial, or plant a tree in her honour or something. I don't know. I just want her to be with me in some way today." He wasn't sure if it made any sense and he certainly wasn't sure Viva would understand, he couldn't help but feel she was lucky in that way. She had her own troubles with her family but at least they were there.

In that moment he hoped she would never have to experience this. He felt protective over her, she was so kind and soft and he didn't want that to ever break. It wasn't fair to compare the two though, truthfully, he had no idea what her struggles felt like. He had seen the sadness it inflicted on her up on the Astronomy Tower balcony and it had wrenched at his heart for her. Clearly he cared very deeply for Viva, the thought struck him like a bolt, electrifying his whole body making it buzz.

Smiling slightly more now he pulled her in for a second hug laughing slightly at her sudden surprise and holding her close he continued "I'm a long way off wanting to celebrate my birthday, but with people like you in my life its hard to be as upset. I know she wouldn't have ever wanted me to be, but I never had a reason not to before. You Genevieve 'Viva' Delacourt are one of my reasons to be happy!" The sentiment was so full of hope he almost choked on it, he couldn't believe that he would ever feel lucky on this day but there it was, the tiny spark he could now begin to nurture.

Being there for @Matthew Campbell
Viva breathed. Just breathed. Her eyes were closed as she hugged Matthew. Looking up at him as the two began to pull back from the embrace, she saw his eyes were filled with tears. Oh! Viva gently reached up and brushed a tear away with her soft hand. Suddenly, there was something else in his gaze. A sort of spark in his eyes, and was he beginnning to smile? Viva smiled back, glad that he was feeling slightly better.

She felt unbidden tears spring to her eyes at Matthew's statement. "Thank you," she murmured. Tilting her head, Viva listened to his idea. "I think that's a wonderful plan," she said quietly. It really was a good idea, and very sweet too. Another thought popped into her head as well. "What if... you also made a memory box?" she asked, somewhat shyly. "I helped my friend in the muggle world make one once. It's where you take personal and meaningful items from memories you shared with your mum, and put them in a small box to keep the precious memories alive forever." Viva glanced at Matthew, worried he wouldn't like the idea.

Suddenly, she gasped as she felt herself being pulled back for another hug. Her surprised expression soon turned back into a smile, however, at the sound of Matthew's laugh. Again, tears sprung to her eyes as she listened to Matthew speak about her. She didn't know what to say. She couldn't even really say anything, it felt like her throat was closed. All she could do was hold on to him tighter, squeezing as she smiled through her tears.

Finally, after what felt like forever again, she backed away timidly. "So, do you want to go do something for your mum?" she asked quietly, sniffling a little. Her eyes shone with tears. Happy and sad tears. Viva's gaze trailed around the abandoned bathroom. "I think we should go somewhere else, though," she commented with a slight laugh. She looked back at Matthew and extended her hand, holding it out to him.

He laughed his old self re-emerging fully as he watched the pretty face of Viva curl up at the state of the bathroom. She looked funny when she was disgusted, there was an even deeper beauty to her when she relaxed and in that moment she was glowing, despite the sleepless nights she was breath-taking. Teasing her as he took her hand in his he feigned shock as he said"Viva?! You mean to tell me this isn't where you spend most of your days, I thought you called this your second home." his laugh continuing to fill the bathroom.

Squeezing her hand slightly in a gentle manner his laugh faded as he returned his face to a smile of genuine thanks, "I think a memory box sounds wonderful, maybe I could even bury it somewhere and it would be like a grave I could visit whenever I needed her." For a minute he worried that his idea would come across morbidly but he knew well enough by now that Viva always understood exactly what he meant and never judged him. Reaching his hand into his shirt he realised that if he was going to start on this journey he wanted to share with her the most important memory he had. Letting go of her hand for a second as he fiddled with the collar of his shirt he drew out his necklace, with the simple golden ring wrapped around a beautiful inset amber.

Showing it to her he said his eyes unable to keep off it and a joy filling his eyes, "This was her wedding ring, my father gave me it as a kid and I've never gone a day without it since. Apparently on the day of their wedding he told her that no day could ever have been more perfect. Her response was that she was pretty sure one day would be slightly more and gave him the pregnancy test. Whenever I felt bad he would tell me that today might have been her last but it was her happiest." Returning the ring to behind his shirt he took up Viva's hand once more and although his face was sorrowful their was a sense of peace within it, "Lead the way then Miss Delacourt, you're the expert after all!"

Laughing with @Matthew Campbell
Viva had a puzzled smile on her face as she turned to see Matthew laughing. "Are you laughing at me?" she asked. She laughed at his statement, leaning forward, trying to breathe through her giggles. She straightened back up, pulling him a step forward with his hand. "Oh, yes, right, of course, silly me," she said, mock seriously. "I've always called this place my..." she paused and made a disgusted face as she scanned the bathroom again. "...second home. She grimaced, and looked back at Matthew.

She lost her playful manner as he squeezed her hand. She smiled genuinely, glad he liked her idea. "Of course," she said warmly. "I think that's a good idea. Whatever you need." She blinked as he reached for something hidden under his shirt. Still blinking, she tilted her head to the side as he brought the object out. "Wow," she breathed. "It's beautiful," the simple gold ring caught the light and dazzled her eyes, making her blink even more. Viva drew her eyes up to Matthew as he explained what it was, and why it was significant. "That's so sweet," she murmured, entranced by the sad beauty of the story.

She looked at Matthew with a startled expression as he told her to lead. "Me?" she asked, looking at him. "I don't know what we're doing! It's your memory box," Viva lifted her free hand in the air. "And since when have I been the expert?" her dimples were beginning to show again. "Well, the one thing I do know is that we need to get out of here," Viva closed her eyes and lifted her chin, and marched forward, swinging Matthew's hand. She was trying to hold back a laugh. The two walked out of the abandoned bathrooms, and into the corridors.
