The Cautionary Tale - Or How Lily Spent Her Detention

30 September, 2023
AngelFyre was an insomniac, so being anywhere early on any morning was never a problem for her. She was not familiar enough with Lily to know whether the girl was a morning person or not, but either way, it did not matter. A good bit of thought had gone into this detention, and there was a reason it had been requested as early as it had been. It would start here, in the 2nd Floor Classroom, but it would move out onto the Grounds in its final stage.
Given the nature of the task(s) in front of her, AngelFyre knew Lily was going to need some time. She also knew that the students of Hogwarts, (those allowed to do so and even those not) were generally raring to get themselves out and away from Hogwarts as soon as they could once the weekend rolled around. To capture a sizeable audience for part of Lily's detention requirement, the earlier this all started the better.
She lifted the sleeve of her royal blue sweater and looked at her watch. It was 06:56 a.m. Sunrise would not be for another 22 minute or so, give or take a minute, so the Grounds were still cloaked in relative darkness. As she gazed out the window, she would spy just the faintest burnished yellow streak pop against the darkened palette of purplish blacks. The room had been quite chilly when she first entered, but a quick casting of Aer Calidus had taken the edge off. AngelFyre sat in the high-backed chair behind what looked like it could have been a professor's desk at one time. As she sat and scanned her notes, the tip of her toes on her right foot slowly swiveled her first in one direction and then the other.
A minute before her appointed time to be there is when Lily walked through the classroom door. It was early and dark. Before Lily got the chance to say a word, AngelFyre spoke up. "I am glad you are on time. You have a lot to do and a lot to think about today," and she directed her gaze very deliberately at Lily with little to no humor in her eyes, "and when I say 'you have a lot to think about', I mean it. I do not want you to turn in just some quick, knee-jerk, mish mash of words to be done with this in record time. I know you are capable of deep thought and I want to see evidence of it today, understand me?" Again, a blue, steely-eyed gaze bored into Lily. "If I feel like you are just attempting to glide by, I will refuse your effort and send you back to try again... as many times as it takes."
AngelFyre moved from behind the larger desk and sat on the corner of it. "This detention is going to consist of two parts and will take place in two locations. The first part of it will require that you write a one woman play about the folly of first and second years going off to Hogsmeade. I do not care if you make it a one woman act or you play the part of many characters. I leave that bit of creativity up to you. But I want a seriously thought out effort on your part."
AngelFyre reached around behind her and grabbed her cup of hot chocolate and took a sip while Part 1 of her detention was sinking in with Lily. Moving her cup down to her lap and wrapping both hands around it, she continued. "Part 2 is going to take place down at the Entrance Gates to the Grounds of Hogwarts. As students move to leave the Grounds, headed for Hogsmeade, they are going to be audience to your one woman show," and AngelFyre chuckled, "so make it a good one!"
"And oh! I know you did not have time to get breakfast, so I brought some fruit and pastries from my Common Room. Feel free to help yourself to any of it, as well as to the hot chocolate," and she nodded her head to the second, unopened thermos sitting on the desk.
"Okay. Get cracking. Daylight is now burning and the show must go on."

The Cautionary Tale - Or How Lily Spent Her Detention
7 a.m was too early to get up. Or better yet 6:45 was too early to get up. Lily sighed under her breath as she rolled herself out of bed at that time on September 30. Seriously, what was AngelFyre McCubbin thinking to set the time this damn early in the morning? Lily grumbled under her breath as she dragged herself to the bathroom, her clothes for the day draped over her arm. She turned the shower on and turned it to hot, so at least that would still partially wake her up. Hell it was still dark outside. Way too early.
Lily finished showering and got out, getting dressed after drying off and she dried her hair, and then brushed the knots out of it. She hastily brushed her teeth and washed her face then went back to her dormitory. She quietly opened her trunk and got out a winter cloak, hat, scarf, and gloves. She also grabbed an inkbottle, quill, and parchment, wondering why she needed all this.
Lily walked towards the classroom trying to keep herself awake to at least make it to the classroom. She arrived a minute before, which was a miracle on how slow she was walking. Once she arrived she noticed two things. One: there was food and a second thermos. It didn't take rocket science to figure out who that was for. And two: AngelFyre was already there. She must be a morning person, but one thing was for sure: Lily was not a morning person. She listened, slightly bewildered but having a sense of this-is-going-to-be-disastrous enter her bones and nerves, as AngelFyre explained she didn't want a 'load of mish-mash handed in to her.' The statement that she would make Lily do it over again was not helping either.
And then AngelFyre explained the detention and Lily just wanted to melt into the floor. Or better yet take a time turner and not fight the hag doll last year and let it kill her. That was always a option as well. And then she made it one hundred and ten percent worse by saying Lily had to perform this...act in front of an audience. This was bound to be a disaster. And an audience?? Seriously?? Could she have picked the worst possible detention there is? The answer is yes. Yes she could and she did.
AF then said the food was for her and Lily took no time walking over and picking the plate up carrying it to the desk where she sat her quill, inkbottle and parchment down on it. She slid into the seat and reached for a pastry before realizing she forgot her hot chocolate. With a sigh, she got up and grabbed the thermos before sitting back down again and drinking a little bit of it. At least that woke her up some. Lily then proceeded to devour the plate in front of her. Though with manners.

The Cautionary Tale - Or How Lily Spent Her Detention
Once Lily completed her short breakfast, she stood up and put the plate on the desk in the front of the room, before flopping back in the seat and starting the dread job of writing this play. Her brain wasn't working having just woke up when she got hot chocolate in her system. As she stared out the window, wishing she was anywhere but here in this classroom , Lily started to doze off and had to kick herself under the table to keep herself awake. She took a sip of more hot chocolate before unscrewimg the ink bottle and dipping her quill in it. For a minute, she sat there and stared off in place unsure of what to write. Or how to even write a play. She had read Hamlet that was true. And other Shakespeare stories but that was different than having to actually write one. And then act it out yourself. Its...not fair. She woukd have rather been cleaning out the Potions storeroom or polishing the trophy room before she did this. It just wasn't fair. But then again she probably deserved it. Even if she doesn't think she deserved it. I mean come on! Other first and second years went into Hogsmeade all the time! Colin did it last year and she was sure that others did too. Actually she know she did. Lily remembered first meeting Quinn Root. They had both been first years and had both been in Hogsmeade at the same exact time. And Lily was absolutely one hundred percent sure almost every student in Hogwarts went to Hogsmeade illegally. But anyway she was the one out of what? Over a hundred people? That definitely didn't seem fair but Lily didn't have the heart to tell on her friends. Well not yet anyway.
Lily realized that she had been staring off for a while and snapped back to her task at hand. She stared at the blank piece of parchment and chewed on her quill before getting an idea. It wasn't a good one; not at all good enough to play in front of a freaking crows. Lily dipped her quill back in thw bottle and started to write. It took her a better part of an hour, with a lot of scratched out lines and a few changes here and there. Lily grabbed a spare piece of parchment and transferred the finiahed product over there.
When she was done, she read it over. It didn't sound good to her. It was mostly about a girl who went to Hogsmeade and bought joke things before getting lost and coming face-to-face with a out of control vampire at the end of the hogs head barely making it out of there alive.
Lily sighed and stood up handing it into AngelFyre.

The Cautionary Tale - Or How Lily Spent Her Detention

30 September, 2023
Lily clearly did not seem to be a morning person, or at least she was not a morning person this morning with a detention looming over her head. She sat silently and listened as AngelFyre spelled out for her what was going to be expected of her in order to satisfactorily complete the terms of her detention. Lily's reactions were nothing out of the ordinary when she was told she would need to write a play, but the look on her face when AngelFyre told her that she would need to then perform her play before a live audience actually heading off to Hogsmeade had her eyes grow wide and all color drain from her face.
That reaction surprised AngelFyre to be honest. Lily always seemed so much a social butterfly and so confident that it did not strike her for even one second that the girl might have a fear of performing in front of crowds, if that was even what the problem was here. Whatever it was, Lily looked miserable. AngelFyre could sympathize with her, if she had guessed correctly, as AngelFyre was no fan of a spotlight herself, but the thing of it was this; the whole point of detention was to act as a deterrent. If what Lily had to do today left a bitter enough taste in her mouth to make her think once, twice, or even three times about going back into Hogsmeade again before her third year, then AngelFyre would consider it a success, no matter how scared the second year might be to face a crowd. Better to be scared here than hurt or unaccounted for or worse... dead there.
AngelFyre sat in silence and worked on her own assignments and personal projects as Lily did her thing. She let her eat and even watched as she occasionally dozed off for a few minutes at a time, but then she finally jumped into the deep end and started to really do the work. She wrote and wrote, often scratching portions out, but she kept at it. Close to 2 hours and 15 minutes after walking into the classroom, Lily handed her play over to AngelFyre to read.
AngelFyre read it once, and then read it again. It was certainly something all right. After asking a few questions to get some clarification on the plot line, and to make certain that Lily understood where the emphasis of her story should focus, she handed it back to her, satisfied that the Gryffindor had it all straight in her mind.
"Nicely done. Gather up your supplies and then get your coat and gloves. It is now time to head down to the Entrance gate for Part 2 of your detention saga."
