It was a sweet gesture her not wanting him to get in trouble but if he was honest it seemed simply like a perfect excuse to break a rule he was undoubtedly going to break anyways. Continuing to climb up to the balcony he turned back around, a comforting smile now resting on his face "You only get in trouble if you get caught and I don't plan on getting caught, and anyways technically it was those bullies that would be to blame not you!" he tried to sound as reassuring as possible. No one deserved to suffer and certainly no one deserved to be bullied so whether she liked it or not he was going to do the right thing.

Turning back he began to hurriedly rush up the stairs so that she couldn't do anything to stop him. The wind cut through him like a knife as he reached the entrance to the balcony where the glassy dome parted, what should have been a chilly autumn air though was instead utterly refreshing, like taking a cold plunge on a summers day. He let the air wash over him, breathing around his robes and lifting him out into the open air. Matthew had never been a huge fan of heights before but something about this place just melted away all worries and filled him with a peace he hadn't had in a long time.

Taking a nervous step onto the balcony he turned to see what Viva was doing and whispered down "It's beautiful out here, you'd love it." continuing on he gently approached the bag perched upon the railing and bending precariously over the edge of the railing grabbed it. Now that he was here he figured he might as well savour the moment. With the wind blowing through his hair he took in the stars once more, wishing that life could always be this perfect.

Dithering below @Matthew Campbell
Dither: dith·er/ˈdiT͟Hər/Be indecisive. Ex: 'She's still dithering over whether to accept the job she's just been offered.' That was what Viva was doing, dithering. As Matthew had climbed the stairs, Viva had lunged frantically, trying to grab him by his robes and pull him back to reality. To no avail. The boy had sped up and was now standing up on the balcony with her bag. Viva bit her lip. She hated this. Hated it! Hated the feeling of dread, and worry, and guilt. Underneath those bad feelings was something else though, something she liked. She wasn't exactly sure what the feeling was, but it made her all warm and tingly inside. She had first gotten it as she was standing under the night sky, looking at the stars with Matthew. Pushing aside these thoughts, Viva focused herself on the task at hand.

What is he taking so long for?! Viva really was dithering now, trying to decide what to do. After he said that she would love it up there, she could tell he wanted her to come up too. I'd get in so much trouble! We need to leave now, so we don't get caught. But that feeling was niggling at her again... and against her better judgement she found herself wanting to go up to the balcony.

He couldn't help but glance back down at the girl once again, he could see she wasn't sure and who could blame her being out past curfew was already filling her with dread, this was a different level. This place though, it was like nothing he had ever seen and to think he was here for 7 whole years he knew it was worth any risk and always would be. Breathing in that crisp autumn air he felt as if he could fly. Viva had made this night the perfect memory and so it was time to do the right thing and return the favour.

Barely able to pull himself away from the stars he let go of the railing and walked back to the balcony entrance towards her smiling with his entire body as he radiated pure joy. "I believe this here bag belongs to you Miss Delacourt" he said passing the girl her bag. There was a slight breeze entering from the balcony that picked up her hair in the most elegant way and showed those dazzling eyes even clearer. He felt like he had left one set of stars for another. "It has truly been my honour to share this evening with you Viva, I hope we can do it again sometime, I have a feeling this isn't the first time we'll meet like this!" he smiled, taking her in. Teasing playfully, he took a bow and continued "Now as for me, I am afraid I have a date with the moon, so if you won't be joining me I don't like to keep her waiting. It would make us both very unhappy!" he giggled to himself with a childish glee of rebellion as he turned to re-enter the balcony.

Honestly, there was no telling what she would do. He sensed a spirit within the girl that was ready to burst free, a likeness to his own sense of adventure and trouble making but he also knew her struggle. Growing up he was told he was trouble whether he did something or not, he was so used to the reprimanding he had given up caring but she hadn't and he wasn't going to force someone who wasn't ready only to end up hated by them for getting caught. Especially after tonight, he didn't want Viva to hate him. So he sat, watching the stars pass by, tracing the constellations with his finger and losing himself in the moons glow, wondering if she would join him or even if he would ever see her again.

Making a decision below @Matthew Campbell
Viva's eyes were wide as she watched Matthew come a little ways back. He looked so... happy. No, not happy. More then that. Joyful. Her eyes lit up with joy herself as Matthew passed back her book bag. She took it slowly, gently, from his hands, and looked up at him with wonderment as a breeze ruffled her hair, filling her lungs with the fresh night air. Viva breathed in, reveling in the feel of the night. "Thank you," she said quietly.

Blushing as Matthew talked to her, she averted her gaze and looked at the ground. She clutched her bag, holding on to it as if it was a lifeline. I hope we can do it again sometime too... she thought wistfully. She jerked her head back up at his next words. He wasn't coming down? He was going back up?! But... Viva felt her heart yank. She wanted to go up so badly, and yet knew the consequences if she did. Despite herself, despite her worry, she laughed, throwing her head back to let the wind catch her hair.

As he walked away, she quieted herself. Now she was in a real dilemma. What in Merlin's name should she do? Trying to force herself to do the right thing, Viva slung her bag over her shoulder and took a few steps towards the classroom door, before stopping right in the middle of the room. She blinked, then blinked again. She had to go up there. Turning again, quickly, before she could change her mind, Viva rushed to the staircase, took a deep breath, and ran up it. She breathed out as she reached the top, and saw Matthew. She took a step forward, delighting in the wonder of the stars above. "I came," she said softly.

Could all bend at the mercy of love.”

She had appeared. In the open air starlit balcony he recognised her for just how pretty she really was, of all the stars out there he was sure she shone the brightest. He wasn't sure what had made her change her mind but he was glad she was here. Watching her lose her worry by breaking the rules was magical, there was a new power behind her that filled the air with ecstasy. A wide smile filling his face he said "So you did, join me?" gesturing to his side where he was sitting legs hanging off the balcony edge.

As he waited for her to sit down he tried to quell the growing redness that filled his cheeks as he couldn't stop blushing. He was all confidence before this but now she was really here, in all honesty he wasn't used to anyone wanting to spend time with him let alone a girl. Matthew pondered on what the best thing to say was, should he ask her about her life or how she was finding Hogwarts but as the scenarios played out in his head he knew no matter what she said he would mess it up. Feeling anxious he stared towards the stars and found the answer among the constellations.

Pointing up towards the formation of Ursa Major he spoke gently to the girl "Do you know the story of Ursa Major? It is believed by the Greeks that Zeus fell in love with a nymph named Callisto but his wife Hera being jealous turned her into a bear. While she was turned her son Arcas found her and seeing her as nothing but a bear attempted to kill her but Zeus stepped in and turned him into a bear too. Then to immortalise them he placed them into the sky creating Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. I don't know what wizards think of ancient gods but I think the story rather beautiful."Lost in the moment he felt the start of tears begin to well in his eyes and mostly to himself but audibly said "I would've loved to meet my mum." Still staring up at the stars he held his hand to the ring that hung around his neck.

Listening to @Matthew Campbell
Viva felt her heart turn over in her chest at the sight of Matthew. Why was she feeling this way? It was strange, and new, and slightly painful. But... the feeling also was nice. It was warm, and made her feel like she could do anything. With this burning feeling inside, and the cool night air, Viva thought that nothing could possibly make this night worse. A smile slowly began to grow on her face, soft lips parting gently. The night wind whispered, ruffling their hair. Viva watched as Matthew's brown curls were tossed around, at the mercy of the breeze. Like in a dream, she glided forward and sat down next to the boy, on the edge of the balcony.

She looked up at the stars, heart filling with wonder at the beauty and majesty of the glittering flecks up above. Viva took a breath, aware of Matthew's quiet breathing beside her. After a moment of silence, Viva turned to look at Matthew as he began to speak. She listened, looking at him interestedly. "That is a wonderful story," she said softly, speaking for the first time up on the balcony. "I love it." She looked back up at the sky, tilting her head to study the constellations. They really were quite magnificent, clearly outlined in the deep cloudless sky.

Suddenly, Viva turned her head towards Matthew again when she heard him talk about his mum. It was very dark, but by the light of the moon she could make out the shining tears threatening to fall from his eyes. His mum? Oh no. She was filled immediately with worry and concern, and a deep longing to make him feel better.

Maybe it was the new feeling inside of her. Or maybe it was the stars, their light filling her with a sense of courage. Whatever caused it, Viva gently leaned over and wrapped her arms around Matthew. She did it without thinking, just wanting with all her young heart to fix this hurt. She didn't say anything, mostly because she didn't know what to say, but hoped this would be enough to show that she cared.

He had lost himself in his head but was immediately brought crashing back down to earth as he felt Viva's embrace. He hadn't meant to get upset he just couldn't look at the stars above him and not hope she was looking down on him. It felt nice to be comforted by her, she was so kind and warm despite the cold air that wrapped around them.

Turning to her a simple kind expression on his face he said "Thank you, it was a long time ago..." he paused allowing time for his emotions to settle and for Viva to see that he was ok. He wasn't really sure if he was or not, he was finding recently being away from his family that he thought of them more often than ever, but he wanted her to think he was. Matthew wasn't used to being seen especially not in this way and it scared him slightly, letting people in was a risk he wasn't sure he could afford but sitting there those sapphire eyes staring straight to his heart he wondered if he had been wrong about that. If pushing people away only added more hurt.

Partly curious and partly in an attempt to retreat from being seen he turned the conversation to her, "Do you get on with your family? I'm sure they miss you a lot." it was almost a silly question he thought, who couldn't miss her. Noticing he hadn't taken his eyes off of her since she had hugged him he moved them towards the sky once more listening to her speak but trying not to be overbearing. Perhaps it was a bad idea, many people did not like talking about their family but he wasn't used to this. He would have to make the mistakes as he went and learn from them.

Talking to @Matthew Campbell
Viva slowly drew her arms away, not quite sure if her embrace was welcome or not. Deeply blushing, hoping it was too dark for Matthew to see her face, she hastily looked up at the sky again, grateful for an oppurtunity to look away. "Sorry," she said quietly. "I should know more then anyone not to touch people without warning. I didn't mean to make anything awkward." Her voice was quiet, barely audible. She turned to look at him again as he mentioned his mother. He was making this weird face, like he was pretending to be fine. Viva knew that feeling all too well, which was why she saw right through it. He wasn't ok. He didn't need to pretend to be all tough and strong. Tilting her head a little, Viva studied his face. The flecks of gold in his eyes shone in the starlight as he gazed back at her.

She blinked at the sudden change in conversation. I know what you're doing, she thought reproachfully. But that's ok. If this is what you need, then I'll do it. She took a deep breath, staring at the blue velvet sky above, trying to find the courage she needed to speak. "I've lived in the muggle world my whole life. I never knew the magical world existed until my eighth birthday, when I discovered I was a witch. My dad is a wizard, and my mum is a muggle. When they met, it was love at first sight. They got married, and my dad left the magical world to live in the muggle world, where my mum was more comfortable. Obviously he told her he was a wizard, but they never told me because they weren't sure if I would inherit my dad's magic or not. Anyways, over time, I think my dad slowly started wondering if he made the right choice by coming to live in the muggle world. He missed magic so much, he started getting bitter and angry all the time. When he found out I had magic, he was so jealous. He hated me."

Viva looked down, a lump suddenly appearing in her throat. She gripped her own arms tightly, and swallowed. Why am I telling him all this? She continued, but more quietly. "I never got on along with my dad very well. I did with my mum, but only when my dad wasn't around. She always got quiet and kind of ignored me if my dad was around." Viva kept her gaze focused on the balcony rail, looking down. Her entire body was still, except for the strands of hair the wind was playing with.

It was clear from her reaction that his attempts to hide himself had failed and he felt awful that he had made her question herself. She did a kind thing and he had trampled all over it. Despite this she seemed to continue a sadness washing over her that he hadn't seen before. Illuminated by the stars it made their eyes white beacons able to be read clearly even in the growing darkness. If he was honest he didn't know what to say it wasn't that he couldn't understand her, but how do you help someone realise that they deserve so much more without upsetting them further.

As she talked about her father he could see her demeanour shift even harsher than before, making it clear that his treatment of her had left scars that were far from being healed. In that moment he wanted to hold her just as she had done for him but he was worried it was the wrong move given her comments. Taking in a deep breath from the air that cooled his entire body he turned to her once more, his face consoling and as he spoke it was clear he really was ok. Matthew had grown up learning to comfort his father, it was a position in his life he knew all too well and although this was not his father he thought he ought to try.

Steadying his nerves he spoke up "I used to think my dad hated me too. My mum..." he paused biting his lip to stop his mouth from trembling. "My mother died giving birth to me, there were days when he couldn't look at me and I thought he must hate me. Because I took her from him, but it wasn't true, he couldn't look at me because he saw her in me and it made him sad that she wouldn't get to meet me. I don't think your father hates you Viva, I think he hates that you have a chance to do everything he gave up. Envy is a corrupting emotion. Regardless, it certainly wasn't your fault. You're kind and good and if he couldn't see past his jealousy that's his loss."

In an instant his smile became devilish once more as an idea struck within his mind. It had been years since he had done it but he couldn't imagine a more perfect place. Holding out his hands towards her and attempting to pull her to her feet as he scrambled up himself he asked "Do you trust me?" while smiling like a madman all sadness washed from his face.

Trusting @Matthew Campbell
Viva blinked away a few tears as she looked at Matthew. She felt a deep stab of sadness for him as he explained about his mum. Being a empathetic girl, she had the blessing and the curse of being able to feel what others were feeling, and she felt it deeply. She turned her head away as he mentioned her father. That couldn't be true, could it? It was so obvious. The anger in her father's eyes was enough to show Viva that she was clearly not wanted. She sniffed once, her hair flowing like a stream behind her as the wind picked up. She looked back at Matthew, her blue eyes pooled with sorrow. Did he really think she was kind and good? Despite everything, she felt a warmth begin to grow inside of her.

She stared into his eyes as he began to grin. That was odd, considering everything they were talking about right now. She dragged her eyes down to look at his proffered hand. She slowly reached out her own hand, a little smaller then his. She shivered a little at the touch. Viva loved affection. She craved it, because she never got any at home. She loved hugs, and physical touch. Matthew's hand was just the thing she needed to steady herself, and she got up from her balcony perch with his help. Again, despite everything, she felt a happiness explode inside of her and she laughed as he pulled her up. Viva looked at him. Did she trust him? In a second, she found the answer. "Yes," she breathed.
