Once Astronomy was finished, Kaitlyn took her time to pack up her bag, attempting to look inconspicuous. ’I really want to see what the night sky looks like from up here … as nice as the Slytherin dorms are … I feel like the stars would look even more amazing from up here,’ she thought. As she noticed enough commotion of other students leaving, she snuck over to the staircase leading to the observatory, and quickly scaled the stairs. She was thankful for wearing flats to this class to hide her footsteps as she walked.

When Kaitlyn emerged on the landing, she spotted Minnie sitting there alone. A light flush bloomed on her cheeks. ‘Oh no … I hope I’m not disrupting her peace and quiet … Maybe if I just turn around and leave … no, that wouldn’t do either, Minnie is rather observant … I’ll do my best to not bother her, too much … That reminds me, have I ever told her I like her new hair color? Oh! Is that one of her stuffed animals she told me about? It looks so adorable … Focus, Kaitlyn, you must say something; otherwise, you’ll look too weird.’

“Hi Minnie,” Kaitlyn called out to the Hufflepuff, quietly. “Don’t worry, I promise not to bother you, I’ll sit over here,” she continued, in her low tone. She moved a little further back in the room, but away from Minnie. To respect her privacy, and hopefully her wishes. The young Slytherin playing with the hem of her skirt, as she looked up at the night sky.

Minnie jumped with surprise when she heard Kaitlyn's voice. She quickly stuffed her bat into her satchel and spun around, blushing furiously. Oh this is bad. How am I supposed to act alone with her? This is going to be a disaster. Why do I have to have a crush on her? Blood pops! She bit her lip nervously and slowly walked over to Kaitlyn. "It's okay. You're not bothering me." That much was true. Kaitlyn made her feel too much and too little at the same time, and she was always struggling to figure out her emotions next to her. I can't believe I'm thinking about this. I should just keep talking to her. She stepped closer to Kaitlyn. "What are you doing here? I-how long have you been standing there?" She was worried that she had seen her bat. It was rather embarrasing. But hopefully, if Kaitlyn did notice, she wouldn't care. She stepped slightly closer. "It's nice out, isn't it? I just love stars." Minnie felt her heart rate increase as always as she came closer to Kaitlyn. "That's why I came out here. That and I hate all the noise in my common room." I hope it's dark enough that she doesn't notice I'm blushing. Goodness, this is so terrible! I really wish I didn't have a crush on her. Minnie sighed slightly, and then smiled at her. "So...how has your day been?"

Kaitlyn flushed lightly when Minnie told her that she wasn’t bothering her, and then started to walk over to her. ‘I didn’t mean for her to come to me … ah well, this is nice anyway … wait, is she hiding her bat from me? That’s so cute. I feel bad though. I’d like her to be comfortable around me to admit to these things … and yet, it does scare me a little. I have this crush on her, and I don’t want to mess it up by being an idiot,’ she thought, while maintaining a bright smile on her face.

“I'm glad,” Kaitlyn replied quietly. “Oh, well, I wanted to spend some time up here just to sit and enjoy the stars … In the Slytherin Dorms, I have a window to look out of, but the stars aren’t as magical from down there. And the common room has a lovely look of the lake … not the sky,” she giggled quietly, well aware that she was rambling. A flush bloomed on her cheeks and her freckles popped a little. “Um, well, enough of time. I … well …” she trailed off, unsure of how to broach the subject. “I like your bat, you didn’t have to hide it from me. I’m not about to tease you or anything … I have a stuffed bunny Squishmallow and a stuffed hamster Squishmallow in my dorm,” she admitted, giving Minnie a reassuring smile.

“I totally agree with you. I was looking forward the most to this class, since it reminds me of my muggle education. I love the stars, too … and I get it about the Common Room. Mine’s the same way. It feels like a maze when there are a lot of students in there,” she chuckled. She felt her heart race the closer Minnie approached her. She attempted the quell her heart to no avail. “My day has been going well, thank you. I almost tripped when helping out in the Herbology greenhouse, though. Thankfully the plant I was holding landed on a table. How has your day been?” She asked. She fiddled with one of her pigtails nervously before adding. “I … um. I like your hair color change. I think blue looks good on you,” she complimented her.

Kaitlyn shyly gestured to the seat next to her. “You’re welcome to join me if you want,” she offered quietly.

Minnie was far too speechless by the compliment to say anything. Her brain just shut down for a few seconds before starting up again and making her flush very brightly, embarrassed. Wow. Can I make it any more obvious I have a crush on her? She must be so confused right now. She cleared her throat after what was probably only a few seconds, but what felt like an eternity. "Thanks." She squeaked out. Thanks? That's all I say? She has no idea now much her opinions mean to me. Minnie awkwardly sat down next to Kaitlyn, glad the darkness covered her flaming face. "And...I'm glad that your day went well." She finished. Minnie noticed Kaitlyn acting a little nervous. Oh, am I making her nervous? I hope not, although maybe I should ask her? But what if that embarrasses her? Before her mind could make itself up, her mouth made the decision for her. "Um...am I making you nervous?" She asked, then flushed brighter. Minnie quickly looked away, stepping back a step to give her room. "Sorry. I-sorry." As usual when talking to Kaitlyn, her words got all tripped up. I really cannot believe myself. I just keep on being rude and weird. She must think horribly of me.

Kaitlyn flushed, but smiled brightly at Minnie’s thanks and nodded in agreement. “You’re welcome,” she replied, softly. Her right hand began to fiddle with one of her pigtails nervously. “Thank you … I doubt my day is as interesting as yours,” she replied. She was well aware of Minnie’s metamorphous power and her trouble-making desire. Both of which she found intriguing. ‘I’d like to ask her about it … but it seems like I’m making her embarrassed? I can see her flushing,’ she observed.

Hearing Minnie’s question, Kaitlyn’s face flushed bright red. Before she could respond, Minnie was backing away from her and apologizing. She quickly shook her head to let her thoughts be heard. “You don’t have to apologize … or move away from me. You did nothing wrong,” she fell silent for a moment, her heart beating loudly in her chest. “Um, yes,” she acknowledged shyly before looking Minnie directly in her eyes. “In a good way, though. I’m more nervous that I’ll say something stupid that makes you hate me or not want to hang around with me,” she continued. A brighter smile shined on her face. “I do like hanging out with you and talking with you,” she confirmed. “Um, do I make you nervous?” she asked, quietly, hoping Minnie didn’t hear it. "You don't have to answer; if it makes you too uncomfortable, I'd understand," she continued softly.

Minnie's brain started trying to figure out the hidden meaning behind Kaitlyn's answer. What it she likes me back? No. Don't go there just answer her question. But...should I tell her the truth? What if it ruins our friendship. I...I have not idea how to respond. And yet, she did. "Um...the truth is...well..." She looked away, her face feeling like it was on fire. "Sometimes I feel the need to...impress you...or I worry that you might stop being my friend after I accidentally say something rude. And...I...but no. Normally you do not make me nervous, and I always enjoy hanging out with you." Now that last part was a lie, and Minnie knew it. She always felt nervous around Kaitlyn, no matter how kind she was. I cannot believe-what if she digs deeper into that sentence-why do I do this to myself-what if she stops hanging out- With an effort, Minnie stopped her thoughts and looked back at Kaitlyn, hoping she didn't notice her pause. "So...what do you think of all the teachers? Um...do you have a favorite or a least favorite? Sorry, I'm very bad at small talk." Especially with you. Her mind added. But she couldn't let her silly crush make this lovely night awkward. She was determined to have Kaitlyn enjoy the night.

Kaitlyn gave Minnie a kind and understanding smile. “You don’t have to worry about impressing me … Ever since we danced in the ballroom in January, I’ve been impressed with you. And I doubt there is anything you can ever say to me that will make me not want to be your friend,” she replied honestly and as clearly as she could articulate. ‘I very much doubt Minnie would ever start to make fun of me being a muggle-born, which would be a potential avenue, but even then. It’s not easy for me to start disliking someone. While she said I don’t make her nervous, normally, something doesn’t seem right there. I do wonder if she actually does like me, too. I’m too afraid to ask, and I don’t want her to hate me for trying to delve deeper. I’ll back off.’

“Please don’t hesitate to tell me if I ever make you nervous … um, it’s not intentional,” Kaitlyn continued, her smile never leaving her face. Her smile grew brighter at Minnie’s question. ‘I love her awkward small talk, not like I’m much better.’ She let out a soft giggle. “I think, for me, it’s tied to their classes. I like Professor Toussaint the most for letting me help in the greenhouse. I think I’d have to say Professor Phelan is my least favorite. Do you have a most favorite or a least favorite?” She asked, her voice remaining soft.

As she awaited Minnie’s response, Kaitlyn broke eye contact and looked up at the night sky. “Have you ever imagined yourself as a star? Shining brightly in the night sky. Amongst a sea of other stars, and yet so lonely in your immediate vicinity due to the dark, inky fog dulling the brightness around you. And yet, being a source of inspiration … of hope, for people just like us, looking up at them at night,” she paused for a few moments, letting her poetic words settle in, before turning back to Minnie. “Sorry, that must have sounded kind of corny. Too bad I don’t have my thesaurus with me,” she giggled. She never liked carrying that, and a dictionary, around to her classes.

Minnie smiled as Kaitlyn told her some rather poetic stuff. Then she giggled. That's just like Kaitlyn to bring a dictionary around. "I find what you said poetic and cool! You should be a poet. And...I don't have a favorite teacher, but I do have one that I dislike the most. Professor Phelan. He gives us so much homework! And he gave me detention once. I find him very annoying." She sighed a little but then returned to smiling. Does Kaitlyn...think that I have a crush on-nope. She would say something...wouldn't she? Jelly slugs love is confusing! Then another thought occurred to her. Sugar quills what if we're caught! Talking would be really all my fault and then Kaitlyn might have to hate me! I should leave. But what if she takes it the wrong way? Besides, I really want to stay here with her. Licorice wands! Why does my mind always have to remind me of the bad possibilities! And I bet she's getting curious about why I'm just standing here, thinking. Why can't I talk to her without being awkward? This is getting far too awkward and odd. Why can't I tell her how I feel? I really should. But not now. I have no escape here. But later...I will have to tell her.

Kaitlyn flushed and smiled at Minnie’s compliment. “Thanks,” she replied, shyly, as she pushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “I haven’t thought much about what I want to do … but thank you for your opinion. I’ll keep it in mind,” she promised. She snorted and giggled at Minnie’s description of the Transfiguration Professor. “I … agree. Maybe if you ever get detention near me, I should try to get it too … just do you don’t have to be in detention alone,” she partially suggested, and partially voiced her intent.

As she had no idea what to say next, Kaitlyn’s right hand started to play with her right pigtail again. “Um, Minnie? Sorry, um ….” She trailed off, letting her blue eyes look back up at the night sky. “Do you like spending time staring at the stars in the night sky? I like doing it, but the Slytherin Common Room doesn’t give me the best look at the sky.” Her right hand twirled her pigtail around her fingers. “I’d you don’t mind me asking, but what comes to your mind at night like this? I think a lot of thoughts. But I think I make some of my best writing at night,” she continued. “Although, I consider that poem I wrote for you to be one of my best works, and I wrote that during the day,” she chuckled.

Kaitlyn’s eyes looked shyly back over at Minnie and smiled to her. “You know, you can sit here with me, if you want,” she added.
