The Quiet Girl
Min-seo smiled at the girl and nodded. "Sure! Take all the time you need." she said. Min-seo brushed some of the hair out of her face. Ruby thought that she wasn't nice. Min-seo tilted her head to the side. The other girl seemed quite nice. Did she act differently around other people? Min-seo did know that the girl could seem a bit cold, but not to the point that they wouldn't talk to you and glare. Maybe she was just lucky that the other girl didn't hate her guts. "Well, to me you're pretty nice. And I'm not necessarily better than you," she said in her soft voice with a small smile. The girl loved the snow. It gave her thoughts and memories that had been pushed to the back of her brain. When she was younger, her brother always would ask her to play with him in the snow when he got home from school. She always agreed, of course. But now that she was at school as well, she didn't know if it was going to happen when they got back to London. She turned back to Ruby. "It's okay if you don't know, it was just a random question. My favorite color? Probably lavender." she said.
“I don't understand how people can be so mean to others. We're all living beings, is it that hard to accept?" ~Min-Seo

The Quiet Girl
Was Ruby not nice? She wasn't necessarily deliberately unkind, unless she was in a bad mood. She could often be wonderfully kind and sweet to friends. She was just reluctant to trust people, and in order for her to become close to someone and treat them like a good friend or best friend, she required very specific types of people. Everyone had a list of what they looked for in someone, whether they were aware of it or not. Ruby's people just seemed to be harder to find. Maybe she'd find more of them eventually, but for now she was working on at least making good acquaintances and allies, even if she wouldn't really call them true friends.
Because of her reluctance to be immediately open and friendly, she seemed cold a lot of the time, and it was far from unusual for people to hate her. She was beginning to accept that she would rarely be understood, and because there was something about her that was so different from others, they often found it difficult to like or accept her. Had she ever really had a true, close friend, that she shared a mutual bond of caring with? She honestly wasn't sure. There were her three closest cousins, who were basically her brothers and best friends, but they were older and part of her family, and she wasn't sure if they counted.
The young Slytherin really needed to open up a little. It was difficult to, in this society where everything was impersonal and most people were willing to learn things about someone only to betray them later and ruthlessly destroy them. There were good people out there somewhere... she could think of many of them. Even so, many people were so selfish and caught up in their own desires and beliefs that they never stopped to think about other people, or really consider helping them. What was perhaps disappointing about this was that Ruby didn't really think she was an exception to this... not yet, anyway. But, then again, she had helped people for no reason other than that she thought they needed it. She offered her assistance to people, and made them feel better, offering them a shoulder to cry on and some kindness to help them heal. She was also pushed away too often, though, scared of this girl that held power inside her. She was intelligent. She was willing to do what it would take to reach her goals. She defied social expectations/norms and wouldn't do something just because someone else wanted her to/thought that she should. Sometimes, that meant that she was direct and personal, and that often shocked people because they weren't used to it.
Was she genuine, at this point? She didn't really know. All the walls she had built up to protect herself had had an effect on her, and sometimes she wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't. Besides, her highly contradictory personality didn't help either. Sometimes, she would be a wonderful person who wanted to save the world. Other times, she wondered if she was meant to destroy it. It wasn't just because of what people said or did, either, or linked to her emotions. Her core beliefs/ideals and traits of who she was were often direct opposites. She was left in this strange in-between stage where she didn't really know what to make of things, a lot of the time. There was one huge thing that never changed and had no opposites, though – she strongly felt like she was destined to be someone great and powerful. She wanted to be someone who changed the world – whether it was good or bad. She had always had this feeling like she was meant to be very different, and go far... but that didn't have anything to do with the conversation at hand.
She had to drag her thoughts back to Min-seo and her words. “Thank you. I guess perhaps we can be equal,” she said with a small laugh. The small pause afterwards gave her a moment to mentally go back to earlier in the conversation and properly consider what Min-seo had said about dancing – Ruby hadn't replied to the comment about taking as much time as she needed, either. Did she want to dance again? It would actually be nice... besides, her parents had not been pleased with her quitting ballet because, for some reason, it was important that purebloods were good dancers and at least knew how to do it. “Oh, and about your earlier comment... it would be nice if you could teach me how to dance. When would we be able to do that?”
