April showers bring May flowers.

The old recitation her mother always sang on dreary looking days floating in Illowy's mind as she sat on one of the benches by the Great Lake. Legs criss-crossed under her, sketchbook and graphite in hand, the girl worked away, wanting to catch how pretty and misty the lake looked on days such as this. The real trick was finishing it all before the rain started again. This time of year, it felt like all there ever was was rain.

Blue eyes were focused on her work with intent, occasionally flickering up to the scenery and back down once more to the paper, wanting to make sure her details were accurate. Though the young Slytherin would hardly call herself talented by any means, she had been practicing hard all her life to try to acquire some skill. Perhaps in time, she'd have more confidence in it, but for now, she liked to keep such guilty pleasures to herself.

For a moment, a movement caught the corner of her eye and she looked up catching sight of another first year for a moment before returning to her own work. A thin hand lifted for a moment, thumb and first finger held up in an L position and closing one eye, using it to help keep her work to a scale before she'd go back to the paper.

Dark rain clouds were rolling in quickly, though. If she was going to complete her work, she'd have to move a bit more quickly, else give up for the day.

I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Ruby was spending time at the Great Lake again, which was not unusual. She was outside most of the time – whether she was reading, drawing, observing, interacting with people, or enjoying nature… and so on. She had been sitting cross-legged near the lake for some time when she saw someone else begin to approach it. It was a person she recognized from her classes, the common room, and her analyses/observations of people, but they had never interacted one-on-one before. Illowy Magnard, Slytherin first year – that's who it was. What Ruby found slightly more interesting was that the other girl began drawing. A fellow artist, one in her own house and year, that (from what she had seen, anyway) seemed to be quite intelligent and independent? Now, that was interesting. A potential friend, perhaps?

The prospect of getting close to someone as a friend was both intriguing and repulsive. Ruby had been independent for most of her life – her closest bonds being with three of her cousins – and she had never really had a best friend (or good friends) of her own age, or in general. She needed someone that could possibly challenge her. An equal. However, she failed to find that, and she had not yet met anyone in her life so far that could even come close to what she wanted. Did she have high standards? Most definitely. She was sure that the right people existed though, somewhere out there… she just hadn't found them yet.

The young Slytherin turned her gaze skyward. The ominous clouds advancing in this direction promised rain. Rain did not bother her – in fact, she quite liked it. Even so, she had wanted to do some drawing out here first. She would normally continue to enjoy the outdoors regardless of the rain, but she had this sketchbook with her today, and she couldn't risk its destruction. It would get soaked if she stayed out here, but she reckoned that she would probably have enough time to do one sketch. Whipping her equipment out, she began, her hand darting across the paper as she started with a vague, simple overview/outline of the area, with the girl – Illowy – tucked into a corner, the lake, and some trees. After that was completed, she worked on filling it in. This was the fun part… this was where detail, shading, and the lighting was added. Years upon years of practicing many times daily had got her to this point in her skills, and she was beginning to become quite proud of her work. This year, there had been a striking reality in what she did, and although it still wasn't perfect, it did look pretty good. This was one of the talents that she had been developing for most of her life, and all the hard work and practicing had definitely paid off.

She glanced up at the sky again to find that the rain clouds had almost reached the two students. Her pace increased as she finished off the last details. Had she made it? Possibly. She still needed to find a way to get back to the castle in time, before the rain began… for her book's sake.

Illowy may as well have been on another planet. She was totally oblivious to how near the clouds had come, and even more so that she'd become a part of another student's own art as she held her pencil between her teeth, using her blending stump to work on her shading. A small sense of pride was building up in her seeing the piece come together as she began adding in her shadows and highlight.

However, that feeling was shortlived when she felt it. That first, chilly droplet strike her cheek. Brought back to reality, the girl gaze at the sky, the clouds kidnapping the sun entirely. Quickly, she began packing away her supplies and shoving them into her bag. The last thing she wanted to do was get caught in the rain. Just as she got the last of her things, including her sketchbook, shoved away safely in her bag, the sparse droplets started coming down like a sheet.

The girl looked around herself, spying a dense leafed tree that looked like it would keep her dry enough. The Slytherin got to her feet and rushed for the temporary shelter; at least there she'd be able to wait until the rain lightened up enough to get back to the castle. Of course, by the time she made it, she was half soaked. Illowy smoothed back her thick, dark hair, By the time I get back to the school I'm going to look like a giant pygmy puff, she thought to herself, plopping down at the base of the tree.
