Frankly, her first race couldn't come fast enough. In the time between becoming vice-captain, training with the badgers, and then trying out her own (unofficial) races, she figured she was just as seasoned as a rusty chain. Honestly, it was time she slowed down and let the fates figure out where they wanted to plonk her next.

But not just yet.

Alyssea braved the winter chill and headed down to the planned track with Vanya (her Silver Arrow) in hand. The racers had a week to prepare which also meant Alyssea had a week to prepare for commentating her first race. Looking down at the rough sketch in her hand, she took a deep breath. Hopefully, this would go well and hopefully, the weather would let up before the race day.

She mounted her broom and headed towards the waterfall, shocked by the frozen water. There were enough gaps in the ice that one could manoeuvre and fly right into the passageways that followed but those icicles would be killer. Alyssea slowly moved towards the frozen water and tapped it with her knuckles, reeling back when some of it broke and fell.

How exactly were they going to deal with this on the day? Alyssea took a lap before darting towards the passageway hidden behind the waterfall, easily manoeuvring through and squinting as she made it out the other end.

Vicente has tanked up for three months in preparation for becoming a part of the Hufflepuff broom racing team. Sure, he did manage to fly with a broom around just fine, but he has been struggling to pass some obstacles that were provided in this outdoor area, mainly the high, strong wind that nearly made him fall off.

Vicente's skills have proven to be unreliable for him lately, and he doesn't know why. All of his father's training was utterly useless in this kind of environment, beside the trees—he had dodged too many of them as a child, so it was fair to say how easy it was for him to do that.

Vicente sat down in the spectator section, where he could rest from his self-made practice and drink the heated pumpkin juice that he had brought from the kitchen. Suddenly, he spotted someone preparing themselves, warming up before mounting their broom, and passing through the icy waterfall effortlessly. "Wow, this person could handle the cold," he said to himself before taking another sip of pumpkin juice and watching them go through another obstacle.

Once he felt the warmth of the pumpkin juice spread through him, Vicente used the binoculars he had purchased in Diagon Alley when the figure was too far away for him to see clearly, and he realised that the person he was spectating was none other than the Hufflepuff broom racing co-captain. He had seen her multiple times; however, he had never had the chance to speak to her due to the lack of opportunities.

Seeing this as a chance to introduce himself and get to know the co-captain before he managed to be on the official broom racing team, Vicente seized the school broom, and was about to head down to join her, but the notion of disrupting her session prompted him to retreat to his seated place, thinking of a way to strike up a conversation after her session.

Alyssea didn't stop to turn around and consider the obstacles. No, she kept flying. She did, however, actively avoid the Whomping Willow, opting for a completely different direction than the one the broom racers would have to face next weekend. As much as she wanted to test the entire track, it wasn't the time to test her luck. If she got caught in the hands of the willow by herself then, well, she wouldn't be able to escape that one.

There was a spot on the track where she could literally feel her hands fall off. Flying into the forest, she no longer felt the shaft of her broom beneath her and crashed into a few trees. It reminded her of that mock race she did with Piérre, Colin, Aurora, Astra, and Xailah again. Snowfall and flying do not mix at all. She decided to stop right before another narrow passageway and turned to face the start of the track.

She expected the distance, but she did not expect a face in the stands. Alyssea squinted. Who was that?

With one last glance at the narrow passageway, she flew back to the starting line, hands still numb from the cold. Upon closer inspection, she found a curly-haired boy with a broom in his hand. A First Year? Alyssea had never seen him before so the only reasonable idea was that he was a new student. Or he could be years older than her. She slowed to a stop. "Can I help you with anything?"

Is she talking to him? The Hufflepuff boy looked around as if she were speaking to someone else in the spectator section, but no one was around the area beside Vicente—she was, in fact, talking to him. "I don't need help, thanks," he said awkwardly, still holding his pumpkin juice while clinging onto the school broom and thinking about buying a new broom in Diagon Alley with the coins he saved in his jar at his dorm. "Just taking a rest after my morning training."

Saving up galleons would probably take years for him to save up to buy a firebolt, the fastest broom in the UK, or maybe buy a Varápidos, which was used by the Brazilian National Quidditch Team during the World Cup in 2014, but either way, it was indeed his goal to get one of the best brooms in the wizarding world; there were no other choices since it's his final decision since he got his Hogwarts acceptance letter. He took a quick glance at the girl before him, who was suspended in mid-air, perched upon her broomstick, which remained still.

"I was expecting you to finish the whole track," Vicente continued as he casually taking another sip of pumpkin juice, unaware that the school broom he had been holding slipped away from his grasp, tumbling from the spectator section, "But you did a decent job. Passing through obstacles is difficult, especially that angry, moving tree. I thought I would die going through it." He chuckled before rolling up his sleeves and showing her his bruises.

Morning training? Was the boy a Quidditch player? But that wouldn't be right since the Quidditch games were done on the same day as the duelling matches. Did he even play any sports? Or was he simply a sporty person? Alyssea thought the field was empty when she came down, but maybe squinting to keep the snow from her eyes made her miss someone in the crowd.

Alyssea looked down the track and chuckled. "I don't do these tracks seriously, but I like to test them out so I can give my team some tips on how to best fly through it. I guess this time we have a bit of an advantage since I set up the track this time around."

From the little demonstration she just ran through, the usual precision and focus was needed. Maybe letting the team know to wear warmer-than-usual clothes would be a good idea. As for the Whomping Willow, Alyssea raised an eye, "You tried it earlier? Going through the willow, I mean." The boy didn't look awfully battered or anything aside from the bruises on his arms, but that also meant he was flying without proper supervision. She threw the thought to the back of her head."A lot of people don't realise that, if you fly fast enough, you won't get noticed by it. But flying top speeds can be risky."

That was a little secret she was going to keep for herself until the day of the races. Didn't want the other captains other than her and Avery to know beforehand. Word spread fast around the place, after all.

She hummed. "Say, how good are you against hard winds? There's a windy spot on these tracks that I considered, but scrapped it for a different route."
