Em's first semester at Hogwarts was well under way. Between Charms, Transfiguration, and Defense Against the Dark Arts; Em already felt that his time at Hogwarts was busy and well spent. He had a particular affinity for Charms, and spent most of his time studying more advanced forms of magic that would be practical to his interest.

Having grown up in his house, Em didn't particularly get excited for brewing potions. It was rather mundane, especially first year draughts. He did enjoy foraging for ingredients when time would allow, though the actual brewing of potions came rather easily to him. He had watched his Mother brew potions daily his entire life. She told him her personal secrets, and what to look for. Even how to correct simple potions that went awry. It came naturally to Em.

Today his class was being tested on their ability to brew an effective forgetfulness potion. This wasn't;t a brew Em was particularly familiar with outside of school, but the techniques were beginner level.

He sat at a quartered potions station. Three other students sat near him, though they all had their own brewing set up. They were allowed to use their textbooks to follow the recipe, but talking to their other classmates was not allowed.

Em followed the recipe, knowing that the potion would be brewed in two parts. He added two drops of Lethe River Water to his standard size two pewter cauldron, and heated it carefully for twenty seconds. He added two Valerian sprigs to the heated liquid, and stirred it clockwise for three turns. After waving his wand over the brewing potion, he sat back on his stool, and observed his other classmates.

There was one Slytherin student, Matthew Campbell, who seemed to not be paying the most attention to his recipe, more concerned with playfully pestering his friend. He had brunette curls he was always pushing out of his face, was a slim build, slightly shorter than Em, but with similar hazel eyes.

Em watched as the Slytherin tossed in his Valerian sprigs, and stir the potion a few times, before stepping away to engage with his friend who had also finished the first part of the test.

The professor had stepped out of the class, to scold a student who over boiled his river water, making it evaporate, and his cauldron over heat. Em kept an eye on the Slytherin, who wasn't paying attention to his potion at all.

Em was caught up on their homework, and forgot a book to read. He noticed the missed steps and figured it wouldn't hurt to help him pass the test; maybe even make a new friend in the process.

Em subtly stepped up to the other student's cauldron. He noticed that the potion was not brewing the way it should, and was a little off colored. Em took a teaspoon of river water, and half a sprig and added it to the liquid. He stirred the potion six times clockwise, and two times counter clockwise. Em waved his aspen wand over the cauldron, and watched as the liquid changed color, and began to bubble properly. Em smiled, a look of satisfaction on his face.

Em turned when he felt a heavy tap on his shoulder, and was face-to-face with Matthew.

Potions class, although at first not one he believed he would particularly care for, had become a calm relief for Matthew. Starting his first class he had been delighted to see the friendly face of his friend Felix and they had instantly joined together and become quite the chaotic duo much to the poor Professor Regan's displeasure. It was a place he could let himself go and a welcome break to have a class where he didn't have to constantly watch his back for knives.

Or so he thought...

The Professor had taken off to scold one of the other students and he revelled in the opportunity to get some much needed fun from this dreadfully dull potions test. They were being asked to brew a Forgetfulness Potion, it wasn't that he didn't care about the test, more that it was his last class on a Friday and as a rare surprise the sun was blistering enough to even heat the usually baltic potions classroom so his mind was more occupied on events after class, rather than during. Tossing some of his ingredients in and mindlessly stirring he ran over to Felix's cauldron that looked almost ready to boil over, wouldn't be much use planning an afternoon of fun if he had no one to spend it with he thought to himself and ran over to assist his friend turning his cauldron heat down laughing off his pals mistake.

That was when he turned back and saw a rather surprising situation awaiting him. In place of where arguably he should have been, one of the boys from his station was eagerly tampering with his potion. The boys chestnut hair had a clean cut to it with a taper fade, nothing like the mop of curls Matthew himself bore. He had learned the boys name on the very first day, Emmanuel Bourne, a potions prodigy they called him so being the curious individual he had asked around about him. Turns out his mother was a famous potion brewer herself so it was no wonder he felt the need to but into other people's business, it was the pureblood way after all to assume everyone less was incapable.

Marching over to the boy he attempted to appear as defiantly confident as possible but being smaller than Emmanuel it likely wasn't going to prove very effective. Sometimes, just sometimes, he wished he could grow a little. As he cleared his throat and tapped heavily on the boys shoulder he was greeted by the satisfied face of Mr Bourne, potions prodigy. "Why are you messing with my potion?" he confronted as the once satisfied face of the boy began to fade. Following up and pushing past the boy he checked the potion for any signs of sabotage though couldn't see anything noticeable so far, untrusting he continued "What did you do to it? No doubt something I won't be able to see until after it's complete." there was a defeat in his voice as he felt the relief and fun of this class was likely about to end. Just when he let his guard down and he stopped looking, there was the knife.

Em’s face shifted from startled, to slightly angry, and landing on embarrassed as he was accosted by the Slytherin. The boy’s face was a mixture of anger and surprise, as he confronted Em. Although he was shorter than Em, he felt that his demeanor was towering.

Em usually strayed away from any and all confrontation, and to be interrogated when he was doing something nice, started to rub him the wrong way.

Em lifted up his hands, a sign of surrender, and let a small sigh out. He took a step back from the finger pointed at him in accusation, and took a small breath before replying.

His voice was a little shaky, but built in stature as he went.

I didn’t mean to meddle, I just wanted to help. You weren’t paying attention, so I fixed your potion for you. It’s really no big deal,” he stated dismissively; letting his arms fall back to his sides.

Em straightened his back as he inhaled, not losing his composure on his exhale. “I was trying to do something nice, and assist while you gossiped with your friends. I’m now realizing, that was a mistake. Although I am sorry, I really don’t appreciate the accusation you’re making.” Em said, jumping to conclusions.

He could feel his face betraying him, his cheeks turning rosy from embarrassment; his eyes swimming in regret. But despite his frustration with himself, he could feel that his pride would continue to make him defensive. Em usually was level headed, but could let his emotions take over at the thought of being in trouble.

Sorry he laughed to himself, the boy was sorry. Sorry for getting caught more like, Matthew thought as he sized up Emmanuel in front of him. As he took in the boys embarrassed face he wavered slightly, it was not the reaction he was expecting, gloating sure but embarrassed. He replayed the boys words in his head measuring them for their true meaning and feeling the anger rise inside of him as he did.

Emmanuel had wanted to fix his potion, because he was gossiping, and it was no big deal. The words gnawed at his brain, "Well for your information, I wasn't gossiping I was helping my friend make sure his potion didn't overboil but I'm so glad I had you to save me, would you like a reward?" he sneered frustration driving his tone. It may not have been a big deal to the boy in fact maybe it really was even a genuine action from him but it was important to Matthew.

Ever since he had been here he has been underestimated at every step, what could a muggle know about magic, lets all laugh at the silly muggle-born and his lack of knowledge. Every time he had proven them wrong and he wasn't about to let this time be any different. Watching the regret in the boys eyes he faltered slightly, he was used to being pitied but this was the opposite, he felt as if he was behaving exactly like he had been treated. After all his step-father would never forgive him, being a lawyer he was a firm believer in innocent until proven guilty.

Once more examining his potions he noted that it seemed to be in perfect condition if anything the coloration was far better than when he had left it. He couldn't be 100 percent certain but it seemed clear the boy was telling the truth. Tears began to well in his eyes as he realised that this place was turning him into someone he didn't want to be, but he cleared them turning back to face Emmanuel with an expression of sorrow.

Lowering his tone he spoke again "I didn't mean that. Were you really trying to help me?" this time his questioning came across as genuine. "Even if you weren't I shouldn't have snapped at you, I'm sorry, it's not who I am." his cheeks now burned brighter than even those of Emmanuel's as he felt like he had made a horrible mistake. Rising his hand up to his necklace as he did so often when he needed comfort he continued "I'm not trying to excuse myself or anything, you see I'm just not very used to receiving genuine help, especially from one of you lot." his eyes fell to the floor ashamed.

A Reward? Em felt anger building in his stomach, like a kettle beginning to boil. He clenched his fists, and squinted his eyes. Using every last bit of self restraint to keep him from yelling at the Slytherin, or worse, grabbing his wand. Not that he’d know what to do with it, but the other boy didn’t know that.

Em watched as tears formed in Matthews eyes , and his tone dropped with his apology. It was like a balloon was deflated inside of him. Em’s cheeks stayed rosy, but he unclenched his fists, and he could feel tears trying to swell to the surface; but he pushed them down.

Em cleared his throat again, this time louder. Swallowing his anger, and especially his pride, to reflect the change in the conversation. He wasn’t calm yet, but well on his way.

“Listen, I am sorry,” he began, shifting on his feet. “I over stepped, and I should’ve asked. My Mother has shown me how to fix potions more times than I can count, and I just wanted to help. I didn’t mean to come off as an arse,” he sighed.

Em combed his fingers through his messy hair, and took a quick glance at the classroom door; still no sign of the professor.

“I know Ravenclaws are known for being a bit bossy with schoolwork, and I shouldn’t have leaned into that,” Em paused for a moment, and reevaluated the conversation. The feeling of missing something came over him as he spoke.

“Oh, you don’t mean my house do you,” he realized, looking the boy in the eyes. A flicker of anger flashed through his stomach; still on the defense.

“I’m not prejudiced, I’m just good at potions.” His statement, although true, came out tougher than intended.

In all honesty Matthew had no idea how to react to his apology, the anger that was there just moments ago had faded into an awkward embarrassment for the both of them and he imagined they both wouldn't mind the ground swallowing them up at this moment. His apology, however, seemed as genuine as Matthew's and he believed that Emmanuel really had meant to help.

He couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at Emmanuel's description of Ravenclaws, at least they're self aware he thought to himself. Sadly the merriment was short lived as the boys demeanour returned to a tough defensiveness as he almost chastised Matthew for calling him a pureblood. Guard immediately back up his eyes turning cold he said"Great, I'm so glad your life of growing up with a potions expert made you so good at it, some of us actually have to do the work for ourselves so I'll be getting back to that now. If I ever need help again though I'll be sure of who not to go to!" flinging his insults in Emmanuel's face he turned away from him returning to his potion.

The boy may not have been prejudiced but he was certainly right about one thing he was an arse, was he so blind to see the world of privilege he came from, growing up with all of this rather than being thrown in a couple of months before. Unable to clear his head of the notion he turned back to him "I really hope you're not prejudice, because it would be a waste of talent, but there are plenty of people here that are so I'm sorry if my comment made offence but I didn't have the luxury of growing up in this world. Everything I learn I've learned myself and unfortunately for the both of us every pureblood I've met has treated me like a lesser." He could feel himself getting upset, as he remembered every instance of someone looking down on him in his short time here but he was not about to be lectured on his own experiences.

Em felt a bubble of anger boil over in his stomach. He lost his composure and rolled his eyes at the Slytherin. To assume he was somehow superior to Matthew because he is wizard born was asinine. Em never thought he was better than anyone, he just happened to know potions.

It took everything in him not to stomp his foot. He huffed, and moved back to his station, not taking his eyes off of Matthew.

”Next time, I’ll be sure to let your potion catch fire instead!” Em laughed, sitting down in his stool. “Just so you know Matthew, we are all here to learn. None of us-” he gestured to the rest of the class. “-None, have done this before. We are all learning, and we are all ‘learning, to learn for ourselves’,” he quoted, using his fingers sarcastically.

“You being bad at potions has nothing to do with your family. Just like me being good at potions, has nothing to do with you being a prat,” he said, smugly. Antagonizing him was petty, and he knew. He couldn’t prevent his temper from showing through.

Although he was typically gentle and kind, Em had always had a temper. He was never inclined to fight anyone, but he could be sharp tongued. He knew he had been punished more than once over it, though it always seemed to be a lesson easily forgotten when he got upset.

Now he'd done it, now he'd really done it. Matthew always prided himself on his compassion and general softness but there was a darkness to him that lived just below the surface waiting to snap and in moments like this he was undeniably Slytherin. Even the insults he used had to be classy and elegent he thought to himself balling his fists. He was no fighter, not in a traditional way, being 4 foot 6 you couldn't be but his brain was always his strongest weapon and he was about to show this Ravenclaw exactly what Slytherin cunning was. Then we'll see who's 'good at potions' he mocked the boy in his head.

Slyly hiding some mistletoe in his balled fist he marched over to the boy's station. It was still far too early to add them and was sure to destroy his potion. "It must be so hard for you being that arrogant, does it take practice or does it come naturally to you like potions, maybe you learned that from Mummy too." he mocked goading the boy to distract him from his plan. Pushing him in the chest slightly with his free hand he continued "Maybe I should show you what we learn in the muggle world, while you're learning how to be a pompous arse!" pushing the boy once more he had gotten exactly where he needed to be. Being small had one major advantage, he was fast and so pivoting rapidly towards the boys potion he threw in the berries and watched as the reddish potion turned a deep sickly green. Smirking back towards the boy a devilish glee in the glint of his eyes he said "Wow, I'm sorry you're so right Emmanuel your potion looks great!". Giggling menacingly as he watched the boys temper boil over mirroring his potion splendidly.

It was low move, but quite frankly Matthew was done caring. He was so sick of every pureblood trying to tell him who he was and enough was enough, he was no longer going to allow people to underestimate him. If someone was going to pick a fight with him they better be prepared to lose.

In a fell swoop, Em watched as Matthew ruined his potion; turning it from a proper red to a disgusting green color. Adding mistletoe this early left Em with two options, restart completely; or try adding powdered plum flower to neutralize the entire potion, and use half the ingredients to remedy the mistake. However, this boy decided to go even farther than destroying his potion. Not only did he insult Em, he insulted his mother. That was entirely unacceptable.

Em has never been one for confrontation, and this was truly his first experience in dealing with someone as nasty as his older cousin, that he couldn't quite hide from. He was an array of emotions. Embarrassed, sad, angry. Anger, though, is a fuel. It explodes when in the wrong conditions, and just like his ruined potion, Em was about to boil over.

Em stood back up, and remained inches away from the Slytherin. Em was slightly taller, and looked into the boy's smug face. He could feel tears reaching the surface, that he wouldn't be able to totally bury. Though, these tears weren't going to be a sign of backing down, no he couldn't allow that. He couldn't allow some brat to make him feel uncomfortable in a class he is born to excel at. He couldn't let his mother down, on either fronts.

"I wonder," Em said quietly, but sternly reaching into his robe pocket, and allowing his fingers to curl around the handle of his aspen wand. "If all muggles are as rude as you are. Insulting my mother? I can't have that." Em looked Matthew in his eyes, feeling a small, warm tear fall out of his right eye, and skid across his cheek.

"I fixed your potion, and you ruined mine. Fine. But you are going to need to pay for what you say about my Mother. And I don't see our professor," Em pulled his wand from his pocket, and took a step back, keeping the tip aimed at the boy. Reason made way for madness. The threat of multitudes of detentions was far away from Emmanuel's mind. He had recently learned the Dancing Legs Spell, and although he had never used it on a person, he figured that he'd likely be able to figure it out.

Em's conscious ringed quickly in his head. Stop, don't become the monster he thinks you are. Allow him to apologize. Em hesitated for a moment, before giving in to his better side (despite how quiet the voice was in his angry ears). "Apologize now, or I'll jinx you. Unlike you, I have manners. I'll allow you to back off, or I'll finish this here and now." Em sounded cold. He couldn't imagine himself as particularly intimidating, but bring a wand into an argument was always a catalyst for disaster. Though, he did not falter. His wand remained pointed at the boy, his stance firm, his heart beating fast in his chest.

The words cut him deeper than the boy could possibly know. It was like a bucket of icy water had just come crashing over him as the realisation of what he had said hit him. He wanted to run and hide, he wanted the ground to swallow him up all over again and more than anything he wanted to break down in tears. Who was he right now, he was sure if there was a mirror there he wouldn't recognise the person it reflected.

He was letting Hogwarts harden him into the very people he hated.

A coldness had entered Emmanuel's voice as he pointed his wand at Matthew. Scared and disappointed in himself, Matthew jumped back raising his hands up in front of his chest, people had been cruel to him for weeks now but no one had pointed a wand at him. He didn't know what to do, it was like the whole world stopped around him and he could feel his heart pounding in his chest. The boy grew up with magic he could know any number of nasty jinxes, and Matthew would be defenceless to stop it. But maybe that was what was right, maybe he deserved it after what he had said.

The truth was that none of that mattered though because he was beyond sorry and thankfully the boy was kind enough to allow him to prove it. Tears beginning to stream down his face he spoke quiet and shamefully his voice practically trembling "Please, y-you're right that was too far. I-I didn't mean to insult her, I would never do that, or I didn't think I could. I don't know what's come over me I'm just I'm so sorry." Now fully crying he sat back down at his station one hand frantically wiping away tears while the other firmly gripped the ring that hung on his necklace.

After a few moments he stood again walking towards the boy and his voice still barely a whisper through the chokes of tears he said "I'm really deeply, very sorry I swear, and please let's swap stations. The professor won't notice you can have my potion it's practically yours anyways." He had never felt smaller than he did right now but he had learned a lesson today, a lesson of who he would never let himself be again.
