All Emotions in a Song

Mellani entered the Rehearsal Room of Hogwarts, in need of a distraction, a way to get away from her life. Mellani had always had a certain attraction and talent when it came to music. Mellani looked around the Rehearsal Room, trying to choose between playing a saxophone or a piano. After a good amount of thinking, she decided to go with playing the piano.
Mellani sat at the piano, practicing scales to get her hand used to it for five minutes, then stopping, wondering what she should play. After a bit of thinking, she decided to give a go at composing her own song. Mellani had a habit of filling her songs with all the emotions she felt at that moment, very similar to her habit with sketching. On this particular day, she wasn't in a great mood. She really wanted to go back home for a while and regretted not doing so in the Winter or Easter vacations. Mellani missed being around her friends back at home. Even though she spent a considerable amount of time at Hogwarts, she had hardly any friends, definitely not any who she could talk with the way she talked with her friends back at home. Mellani couldn't even write to her brother for fear that the letter might be read by someone other than him.
Her song expressed all these emotions. I was soft and slow and oddly... hopeful sounding. It had an even mix of depressing notes and hopeful ones. It was one of those songs that would remind you of home, of being with someone you loved, of doing something you liked, but in the end, it reminded you how hard doing everything all at once was and the best you could do was keep hoping that you had enough hours in the day to manage it.

Coming upon @Mellani Miller
The Rehearsal Room was one of Simon's favorite places wtihin the Castle. It was a room where he could practice his guitar or the piano, write some songs, sing some lyrics - all without an annoyed glance from someone studying or writing an essay. Not only was it a more solitary and welcoming space, but the portraits on the walls had grown to know him and they supported both him and anyone who came through those heavy wooden doors.
That particular day, a song that had been playing in his head time and time again kept popping up in the most random of places - while brushing his teeth in the Prefect's Bathroom, while learning a new incantation in Charms, when writing a letter to his Aunt Maggie. It was as if it was begging to be heard so he wrote a few notes down in a notebook and then took to the Rehearsal Room to play them out on the piano to see how they sounded.
When he got closer, he could already hear the keys of the piano making their sound and so attempting to play out his song proved to not be a choice at the moment. That was fine and all - there would be other days.
Simon did, however, open the door slowly so he could hear the song that was being played, hoping to not disturb the musician.

Mellani was so absorbed in playing the piano that she did not notice another person standing at the door and listening to her. Not until she was done with her song and had decided to take a look around the room. That was when she saw him. She tried not to look conscious or surprised. She usually played songs for herself and was not used to having someone else listen to them. It made her wonder what the other person would think of her music, and how they would judge her.
She tried to put on a confident smile as she greeted the boy, who from looks, looked older to her. "Hey... You looking for something, or would you like to play the piano or something?", she asked. She wasn't sure what else to ask, and the question did sound slightly rude to her ears, even though she meant it in a kind way.
Why, oh why was she so bad at talking to people? She knew that the rehearsal room at Hogwarts was a place for all the students and she should have known that someone would come in, but yet, it still made her nervous. She wondered what she should do. Should she get up and run, or should she stay and see what the other guy had to say? He didn't look like he had any bad intentions or anything. He was just listening to her playing the piano.

The girl spoke and honestly, he wasn't quite sure what her tone was. If she had been upset that he lingered to hear the playing than he certainly didn't mean no ill intentions. The music was pretty but she might not have wanted an audience.
"Uhh - " he paused a moment, attempting to gather what he should say. "Yea, but you're here and I can come back. Beautiful playing, by the way. Continue, please, and pardon the interruption. Don't be startled if these guys randomly break out into applause," he motioned to the portrait people on the portraits that hung in the room. Some of them were waving to him and he smiled, waving back at them.
The heavy door behind him began to shut and normally it would have knocked a person inside due to its weight but it didn't for Simon, since he was a dhampir with excelled strength, only budged him just enough that he dropped the notebook in his hand. "I swear they don't even want us in that room. They make the door heavy enough. It needs to have an automatic door like the Common Rooms have, or a secret entrance....." and that's when his thoughts deviated just slightly, wondering if there was a secret entrance to such a room.

Mellani looked at Simon as he responded. He seemed to have picked up on her tone, and honestly, she felt really bad. "Sorry, that uh- that came out harsher than it was intended... You can stay if you like... and... thanks for the compliment, not many people say that.", she said smiling, and blushing slightly because of his compliment.
Mellani looked around at all the portraits, wondering what other surprises Hogwarts had in store. That was when the door behind Simon began to shut, and honestly, Mellani was quite surprised by his strength. She had not seen many people with that kind of strength. He dropped his notebook. Mellani got up and picked it up for him, offering it to him.
"I know right! Somehow the Common Room doors are the only good ones... Secret entrances would be cool! Do you think this room has one?", she asked, curious herself. She only knew of the Room of Requirement that had a secret entrance, and honestly it would be pretty cool if she could find some more such rooms at Hogwarts. Now that would actually be useful magic, magic that she could understand, if nothing else. She really failed to understand the purpose of most magic. Like thestrals, for example. You could see them, but you had to see someone die first. Or ghosts. Why keep spirits of the dead? Why weren't they in the underworld or something?

Introductions to @Mellani Miller
"I don't think this one has one," he said as he looked around it. He had been in that room so many times, he felt he would somehow know. "Plus, they'd probably be mentioning it with all the struggles that everyone has with the door,"and he glanced up to the portrait people, indicating them. "Who know though. I've found a few in this Castle and I wouldn't be surprised if there's so many more."
Simon took the notebook back from her and smiled in appreciation and also was glad that it seemed he hadn't bothered her. He knew how it was to get lost in the music sometimes and that's probably where this girl was, just coming back from reality from the head space she had been in. Can't blame a musician for their passion.
"I'm Simon Kincaid, fellow lover of the piano and music. You play nicely. I'm surprised I haven't come across you here before." That sort of playing needed to be kept up - the practice needed to continue to remain that good. Talent was talent, but it was the practice and dedication that really made one shine and he was pretty sure the girl had put time into her playing.

It took a second for the boy's words to register. "You've found some secret entrances?", she asked, curiosity taking over. Yep, she definitely needed to be friends with this guy. Maybe he could show her some secret doors. That would be fun.
Mellani had only known about the room of requirement so far. Besides that, she had a secret door in her house, but no one knew about that. Secret entrances and secret places gave Mellani a sense of calm that not many things gave her. She looked at the boy with a newfound interest. Maybe he was a prefect, but finding secret entrances was not against the rules, right?
The boy introduced himself as Simon and Mellani just realized that she had forgotten to introduce herself. "I'm Mellani Miller, fellow uh- human?" she said, a shy smile on her face. "I don't visit this place often... but music has always served as a way to let out my feelings, so I guess that's what made me end up here", she said with a shrug. The music had helped in a way. Mellani felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Maybe the feeling was temporary, but Mellani was grateful for it nevertheless. At least Hogwarts had a place with a normal piano.

Simon smiled at her first statement. Mellani was a nice name but she had claimed to be a fellow human and, well, Simon was only half. Still, especially since coming out with his 'secret' that year, it was nice to be acknowledged by someone as his maternal half. Hopefully the smile didn't automatically give him away with his adult fangs. He tried to keep them half extended at all times - so they aligned like normal human teeth - only maybe slightly more pointy. It was barely noticeable.Talking with @Mellani Miller
"Yea, I know what you mean about music," he said, knowing he had spent a lot of time on that very same piano bench trying to sort out his frustration and anger and excitement and confusion - whatever emotion seemed to be getting a bit too much in the years he had there at Hogwarts. It wasn't always easy to attend a new school - whether one was all new to it or from a wizarding family. Plus, Hogwarts was a rather stressful place if one actually though about it - some crazy things happened there.
"So what now, Mellani Miller?" he left off the 'fellow human part on purpose. "Do we have a piano-off to see who's the better player? Talk a bit and learn more about one another? Explore the castle a little? Or do I just leave you alone?"

Mellani looked at Simon smile when she said that she was a fellow human. She thought she noticed his teeth looking pointy, but it wwas probably nothing. When he acknowledged Mellani's comment about music, Mellani felt seen, like there was finally someone else who understood her and why she payed music. Most of the time, when she said that music was a way of channeling her emotions, people just stared at her, and asked her what she meant.
Simon suggested several things to do, and out of them, two stood out to her most. The first, was of course, exploring the castle, and the second was getting to know each other. She was not interested in a having a piano-off, especially because Simon was probably the better player, and as for the fourth option, she just felt that roaming around with someone would be infinite times better than being alone.
"How about exploring the castle while talking and getting to know each other better?", she asked, finding this to be the only way to get both things done. After all, what was the fun in sitting in one place and talking, or roaming without saying anything? This was probably the best, and most interesting option there was.

Talking and walking with @Mellani Miller
"Sounds like a plan," he said and came to help push in the bench to the piano there in the Rehearsal Room. He looked up to see several portrait people lose interest now that there would be no musical entertainment for them and begin to desert their paintings, leaving behind canvases of backgrounds and no subject matter. Some murmured a bit on their way out to - well, wherever it was that portraits went when they didn't want to sit around all day in their own frame.
They were on the Fourth Floor of the Castle and Simon had heard about another entrance to the girls' lavatory that needed to be boarded up because boys kept attempting to surprise them but he wasn't sure the validity to that or if it was just one of the school's urban legends so he let that go - besides, if it was boarded up then there was nothing to see and even if it wasn't; he needn't be spying on the girls' lavatory.
"Have you found any oddities within the castle?" he asked her curious as they walked. There was one behind a mirror on this floor and as they walked out of the Rehearsal Room, that's where he headed. Most were just shortcuts to get from one part of the castle faster than roaming the main corridors. He wondered if it wasn't for the benefit of the headmasters and heads of houses or perhaps even the school elves to just get somewhere a little quicker when needed. One though, connected Hogwarts to Hogsmeade and he knew that such a fact would be of interest to many, especially the students who had yet to have permission to visit the wizarding town.
"Oh, and tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from? What do you like to do when you're not playing the piano?"
