Prying Eyes and a New Surprise
“I climbed a tree to see the world.”
~ * ~Private to @Cleo Cabello and @Samuel Autumnsburn
Monday, April 22nd
In the afternoon, soon after classes end for the dayIt was decently sunny today, but not particularly warm or cold. However, that didn't bother Ruby, who was more than content to enjoy the outdoors regardless of the weather or temperature – as long as she had the right kind of clothing on. Anyway, this was Scotland. People were used to this mild temperature and didn't expect a whole lot more or less, considering it was spring. There were quite a few people outside, but Ruby didn't feel inclined to interact with any of them. No one in the vicinity particularly interested her. Besides, she was enjoying being out in nature and remaining in this untroubled state of peace. She was quite relaxed, as she had already done everything she needed to for the day – both for school and for her own purposes. She had done some reading, drawing, observing of people, and writing, as well as a few other things too.
Ruby had been watching the people nearby. She passed unnoticed until she wanted to – no one would be aware that she was here, even with her ice blue gaze directed straight at some of them. She was in the shadows provided by the trees; she was safe. She glanced at the tree she was currently leaning against. The lowest branch was close enough, and she could probably reach it. Her eyes wandered up and she started circling it, checking to see if this was a good, sturdy tree for climbing. She had also noticed that eyes were now following her as she examined the tree – those belonging to people who probably thought they were being subtle. She concluded that, yes, it was a suitable tree, so she made her way to the other side of the tree, where she wouldn't be seen by anyone. She didn't need or want to be watched in this first stage. She reached up for the branch, standing on her tiptoes, and then put her feet against the trunk of the tree, shifting them higher until she was in a good place to swing onto the branch. She did that, hoisting herself up and then stepping onto a branch where she would now be visible to others. All of this was very quick, and she soon settled and began gazing out at the Grounds again from her elevated point. However, it still wasn't enough. Now that she was safely in the tree, she wanted to go as high as she could and be able to fully admire the beautiful view that she would get from up there. She had climbed many trees before, even just this year at Hogwarts. This one wouldn't be a problem at all.
She paused for a moment to look at the path she would take, and then stood up, resuming her climb. Her hands gripped two higher branches, then she pulled herself up until she could stand on one that was slightly lower than those two. From here, she was now able to climb onto one of the branches she had been holding. After doing that, she stopped – not because she had reached where she wanted to be, but because she had heard a noise. She was not high enough to be out of earshot, in fact, she would be able to quite easily converse with someone on the ground. That seemed to be what was happening. The noise was a voice, and she glanced down to see a person she recognized. It was Cleo Cabello, a first year Gryffindor that had come to be a decent friend, even though they had had a rough start. While she was distracted with climbing, Ruby had apparently missed Cleo's arrival, and hadn't realized the other girl was out here. She offered up a smile. “Hi, Cleo.”~ * ~

Prying Eyes and a New Surprise
Cleo stared up through the branches at the climbing girl. Ruby had not yet noticed that she was there, which was unusual, so Cleo raised her voice slightly over the breeze.
"Hi Ruby, do you mind if I join you?"
Cleo heard Ruby greet her but nothing else, so she came to the conclusion that if the other girl had said anything it had gotten caught in the wind. Eyeing up the tree in front of her, Cleo yearned to follow Ruby. She wasn't jealous of the fact that Ruby seemed to be good at everything she did, she just didn't want to talk to the other girl when there was a very big height difference between them. Grabbing onto one of the branches, she challenged herself to get up to where Ruby was as quickly as possible.
As she climbed, Cleo relished the roughness of of the bark on her palms and the breeze rustling her clothes. Instead of panicking when her scarf blew out in the wind and she lost her balance, she enjoyed the feeling of freedom. She looked at the red stripe that was her scarf amongst the greys and greens of the landscape and felt peace. Admittedly, someone reading her mind in that moment might have been worried for her sanity, but this way of thinking was just a part of who she was. Cleo relished those moments when she felt that endless freedom was in reach, or the feeling she felt when she accomplished something she previously believed to be impossible. She didn't know if everybody had these moments in life or if she was the only one, but it didn't matter to her. She didn't care about the world's opinion as a whole, just specific people at a time.
When she was roughly within reach of Ruby's feet, Cleo settled in a convenient juncture where two branches split. She wasn't afraid of falling, she was too used to being at the top of the cliffs at home. She could nearly imagine herself there now, a safe distance away from the edge, but still close enough to see the constant swell the waves against the rocks at high tide. Nothing's beauty could compare to that of the ocean, she thought. The grass moving in the wind beneath her brought up memories of swirling seaweed, but it was nothing compared to what it was like at her home. Cleo believed that everyone had ties to the place that was truly their home, and she knew exactly where hers was. Just then, though, the biggest question in her head was if Ruby felt the same. She didn't know about the other girls' emotions towards her family and birthplace, and although she was curious, she realised that past probably wasn't all happiness and humour for Ruby. What was important to Cleo, was that they remained on good terms, because she liked Ruby, and she didn't want to lose a friend.
