Kaitlyn turned the page in the book. Her blue eyes scanned the page. The longer she was left undisturbed, the faster her reading speed got, as she was able to concentrate more. It was a nice feeling. She loves to read. While her favorite books were obviously muggle related, she was starting to slowly get into reading more magical books. She absolutely loved reading about Herbology and Potions, and comparing Astronomy with the muggle version. In her opinion, it was very interesting information. Her Astronomy notes were already filled with extra scribbles noting differences. Revising those notes took longer.

Being so absorbed in her book, Kaitlyn was unaware someone joined her at the table. It was only when a female voice called out to her, that she realized she wasn’t alone. A pair of blue eyes peeled over her book, and noticed the girl sitting with her. A flush burned on her cheeks. “Um, H-hi,” she greeted the girl, shyly. Her hands shook gently, as she placed the book, face down on the table to keep her place in the book.

“I-it’s c-called T-the F-fellows-fellowship o-of t-the R-ring,” Kaitlyn stammered, looking down at the table to half hide her embarrassment. Remembering that she was at Hogwarts, and had no idea if the girl would realize, she quickly added, “um, I-it’s a m-muggle b-book.”

Kaitlyn flushed and nodded her head to the girl’s statement. ‘At least she didn’t yell at me for reading muggle literature,’ she thought. She noticed the girl’s warm smile and gave a shy smile in return. ‘And she doesn’t appear to mind my inability to talk, which is always a good thing.’

When Linda looked at her eyes, Kaitlyn responded in kind and looked at her eyes. “I … um … I-I’m Kaitlyn Connor,” she replied quietly. “Um … i-it’s n-nice t-to m-meet y-you, L-linda,” she gave her another shy smile. Despite being shy and stuttering, she actually enjoyed meeting other students. She felt more connected to magical society with every new student she met.

At Linda’s question, Kaitlyn glanced back at the book she was reading. ‘Advice … and she is older than me. I’m surprised she’s willing to talk to a first-year like me,’ she thought. “It … um, i-it’s a f-fantasy b-book … I h-haven’t g-gotten t-that f-far y-yet, b-but I-I’m s-still r-reading a-about h-hobbits.” Another flush bloomed on her cheeks. “Ah … s-sorry. A h-hobbit i-is h-half t-the s-size o-of a m-muggle a-and w-walks a-around barefoot,” she stammered.

Kaitlyn closed her eyes and sighed quietly. “S-sorry …. I’m n-not the b-best a-at talking,” she replied quietly. “Um … m-my fa-favorite g-genres of m-muggle b-books are … um … f-fantasy a-and s-science fiction … b-but I-i’ve read others t-too,” she replied. “Um … d-do you r-remember w-what those b-books were a-about?” she asked.

At the question about how she liked Hogwarts so far, Kaitlyn nodded her head. “It’s d-different t-than w-what I-I’m u-used to, b-but y-yes … I l-like it,” she replied, quietly. “D-do you l-like it, t-too?” She asked.

Kaitlyn’s smile grew a little brighter as Linda responded. She decided to stay quiet as Linda spoke to maximize the amount of speech she listened to and to show Linda that she was truthfully listening. As she heard of books Linda previously read, her right hand rose and began to play with her pigtail lightly. For once, not due to nervousness, but in contemplation of what the girl was saying to her. ‘All interesting choices.’

Followed by her comment about interesting backgrounds. ‘As a muggle-born myself, I see and hear plenty of interesting things every day, even ones that are not directed at me.’ Then, Linda asked what she liked to do other than study. ‘My hobbies.’ Once Linda was finished talking, Kaitlyn waited an extra two beats exactly before responding to her. Practicing active learning also had the benefit of slowing her heart and hopefully improving her speech.

“O-once I finish r-reading it, w-would you l-like to borrow i-it?” Kaitlyn proposed. She wasn’t against lending out her books. While it would have been easier with a fellow Slytherin, she wouldn’t mind sharing with another book lover. “Those a-are fantastic c-choices, and all b-books I’ve r-read before … s-sadly, most are n-not here with m-me. I didn’t k-know how much r-room I’d have in m-my dorm.

If my m-memory serves me, it s-sounds like you e-enjoy m-muggle mystery a-and fantasy books,” Kaitlyn guesstimated. “A-and I agree. I’ve m-made friends with o-other muggle-borns, p-purebloods, and half-bloods,” she listed, checking each off on her fingers. “Um …. h-how much t-time do y-you have?” She quipped. “Other th-than studying a-and reading, I like t-to dance, draw, bake, run, practice yoga, and meditate,” she said. “W-what do y-you like to d-do?” She returned the question.

Kaitlyn gave Linda a bright smile at her question. “Of c-course! I’d love t-to. Would you l-like to read it f-first? I watched the m-muggle movie a-about this book b-before, so I already h-have an idea of what h-happens,” she offered. She was excited for someone else to share her love of reading with. While she never got super attached to book characters, she’d love the opportunity to talk to someone else about them. ‘Linda seems like a great person to do so with,’ she thought.

“Agatha Christie h-sas a lot of great b-books, in my o-opinion. Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, Hallowe’en Party, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, The Hollow, The Mystery of the Blue Train, j-just to name a f-few,” she rattled off the names of a few that she read or brought with her to Hogwarts. “Your b-besties sound a-awesome, by the way,” she giggled.

Kaitlyn flushed as she realized that Linda did not get her joke. “Sorry … I d-didn’t mean that l-literally. I like to r-fefer to my list of h-hobbies as a laundry list, s-since I have so m-many. I asked a-about how much t-time you have to l-listen to me go off a-about them,” she explained, embarrassed at her joke. “I also f-forgot one, w-writing poetry,” she added.

“Oh, cool. I’d l-love to have a running p-partner! I don’t want to o-overburden you … m-maybe twice a w-week, if that’s o-okay?” Kaitlyn asked. “I a-also know how to play the piano, b-but I’m very out of p-practice. I have n-never tried s-singing,”[/color] she smiled. ‘I’m glad this is going so well. And Linda does not appear to mind my inability to communicate properly. This is nice.’
