SIX MONTHS PRIOR TO HOGWARTS

A ten year old Jacob stood across from one of his fathers old coworkers, a freshly retired Auror by the name of Nicholas. Nicholas still looked like an active auror, having an athletic body, scarred face, and standing well clear of six feet tall. He towered over Jacob, and very likely would have intimidated the boy, had he not grown up meeting various aurors, including Nicholas on a number of occasions.

"Watch, boy." Nicholas rose his wand, shifting around to face directly across from a practice dummy in the middle of the study. The mans wand danced through the motions with a practiced precision, his enunciation of obscuro absolutely perfect, and clear enough for Jacob to be able to understand the emphasis. Immediately after he spoke, there was some soft sparks from the end of the aurors wand, and a sudden tightening blindfold around the eye level of the practice dummy.

"Show me that again." Jacob demanded, which earnt him a sharp glare from the auror. "I mean, please show me the wand motion again. It looked odd."

"Here." Nicholas strolled over to the desk, taking a quill and holding it out to Jacob, who accepted with a small frown. "Follow my motion." He rose the wand, Jacob raising his quill, and began to slowly trace a circle in the air, before a sudden diagonally downwards slashing motion across the almost-a-circle shape.

"Useful spell, this one." Nicholas drawled, lazily flicking his wand towards the dummy, vanishing the blindfold. "You know why?'

"Uh.." Jacob began, which earnt another sharp glare. Jacob then paused, thinking his answer through before he spoke, as he'd been taught. "I guess it's a pretty good distraction?"

"Good, and what's the incantation?"

"Ob-SKU-.."

"No."

"ob-SKOO-roh." Jacob quickly corrected himself, which earnt a rare smile from the Auror.

"Good.. Just remember how important it is that you say your spell correctly. We don't want you to accidentally cause any explosions.. Burn off your eyebrows or something, I'm sure your father would be quite displeased if that were to happen."

EARLY SEPTEMBER

Jacob hadn't been at Hogwarts long before he found the opportunities to practice all the theory he had been taught. He stood alone in a DADA classroom, having pushed the tables all to the sides of the room, and dragged practice dummies into the centre of the room. Jacob reached into his robes, pulling out his wand, and idly rolling it over in his hand as he paced back and forth, preparing himself.

"Right.." He muttered, stopping his pacing, and turning square to the dummies. He rose his wand slowly, before beginning to slowly drag it around to form a circle, then suddenly slashing it down, and letting out a cry of "OBSCURO!" There was a bright flash from the end of his wand, and suddenly there was a binding tightly wrapped over the dummies eyes. Or at least where the eyes would have been.

"Cool." Jacob grinned broadly, rushing over to quickly pull the binding off of the dummy. The rush that he'd gotten from that spell had been like no over. He'd finally managed to employ his tutoring. And it certainly had been worth the wait. In fact, he'd enjoyed the feeling so much, that he simply could not wait any more. Just as quickly as he removed the blindfold, it was replaced by enough, freshly summoned blindfold. In fact, the spell was cast so frequently in such a small space of time, Jacob was almost certain that he would be able to cast the spell in his sleep by that point.

"This motion, Jacob." Nicholas tapped his wand onto a blackboard, a carefully drawn representation of the disarming charms wand motion being the centre piece of the blackboard. "To many duellists, aurors, hit wizards, whatever, this spell is key to their arsenal, and so it shall be a spell that I will take particular care in demonstrating."

"ex-PEL-lee-ar-muss." Each syllabus was accessorised with a tap of his wand against the blackboard. "Expelliarmus. Repeat it."

"Expelliarmus." Jacob echoed, stood attentively with his arms crossed. Whilst some spells, the blindfolding charm for instance, had seemed useful but boring, this spell entirely excited him. Even at his age, he could appreciate the myriad of uses for it. Be it an offensive tool, or a more defensive tool. If he were to master any spell that Nicholas would teach him. This would be the one.

"Watch." Nicholas moved around the room, facing off against three practice dummies, all of which held fake wands in their hands.

A flick and a swirl of the wand, at least that's how Jacob chose to remember the motion, and Nicholas spitting out the incantation later, and suddenly the dummies were all missing their fake wands. As quick as anything, and the sway of a duel could be changed entirely. What was a wizard without a his wand? Well, some people could do wandless magic pretty well, but that sort of ruined the impact in Jacobs mind.

"Again." Jacob asked of Nicholas, who simply nodded. He'd long since given up on attempting to fix Jacobs rather demanding mannerisms, instead having adapted to dealing with them. The ex-auror once again disarmed dummies as quick as anything.

"Cool." Jacob muttered.
MID SEPTEMBER

Once again, stood alone in an empty classroom, desks pushed to the sides, clearing the center of the room entirely besides from himself, and the opposing practice dummies, this time holding sticks. They were probably as close to fake wands as he could find, or at least, be bothered to find.

"Expelliarmus.. Expelliarmus." He muttered to himself, over and over again. Carefully saying every vowel. Unlike Obscuro, there felt there was some danger of this spell going wrong, with flying projectiles, and what not.

Sure enough, once Jacob committed to the spell for the first time, he slashed his wand with far too much enthusiasm, slightly off with the motion, causing the wands to be violently ripped from the dummies grasps, flying at him with great speeds. He immediately dropped himself to the floor, allowing them to soar over his head.

"Wow.." He muttered, popping his head back up after a moment. He carefully restored the sticks, now slightly bent and damaged, to the dummies hands before returning to his position. "That did not happen with Nicholas." He almost laughed at himself for his stupidity. He wasn't one to allow emotions to dictate his actions, so why had he allowed himself to get so excited over a simple spell? How immature, he thought to himself with a scowl.

"EXPELLIARMUS!" He yelled, much more deliberate and gentle in his wands motion this time around, careful not to cause any kind of accident. Sure enough, his more deliberate and careful approach was rewarding, and the sticks flew harmlessly over to him, landing in his grasp.

Learning- Tongue-Tying Curse
WC - 547
EARLY OCTOBER

It was the first spell he would be attempting to learn independently. He couldn't rely solely on any tutoring he would receive when he went home, or had received prior to Hogwarts. Jacob was also confident that if he returned home, and told his father that he had taught himself spells above his year group, then his father would allow his tutors to continue teaching him spells above what he should be learning, at his age.

He wanted to find a spell that not only seemed practical, but also fun. During one of his trips into the library, he'd rather conveniently happened upon a book containing many number of defensive, or offensive, spells. Whilst many were far above his level, a few stood out to him as being around about his level. The spell that immediately captured his attention was the Tongue-Tying Curse, primarily for how fun it seemed, and the versatility that Jacob believed it could offer him. Someone who was being too loud, and annoying him? Bang! Tongue-Tied. Someone attempted to cast a spell against him? Bang! Tongue-Tied.

Upon discovering the spell in the book, he withdrew a sheet of parchment for his bag, and quickly worked on attempting a sketch of the spells wand motion. His first attempts, however, were far from pretty. It was quite the mess of a wand motion, loosely resembling a wonky circle, with a half-ish circle hooking through it? Jacobs first few attempts at replicating that mess were.. Messes, simply. Nothing even close to the actual sign, until eventually, through his repeated drawings, he was eventually able to replicate the sign. Or at least, close enough for Jacob to be able to discern what it was meant to look like. Next, was the incarnation, which he neatly wrote just under his sketch.

Mimblewimble.

TWO DAYS LATER

Jacob, as he had done a few times before, found himself stood alone in an empty classroom, desks pushed to the edges of the class, besides one which held Jacobs piece of parchment, reminding him of the spells incantation and wand motion. Opposite him, stood a lone training dummy. This dummy, however, slightly differed from the others, as it had its jaw hanging open, a wooden tongue visible in its mouth. Perfect for practicing the tongue tying curse. He rose his wand, slowly and carefully beginning to trace the motion in the air. Over, and over. He must of preformed the motion a dozen times, before he felt as if it was being smoothly, and accurately traced in the air. At this point, he felt confident in his abilities. And so, he confidently rose his wand.

"Mibiblewimbly!" He began, and.. Nothing. With a frown, he glanced back over at his parchment. "Oh, mimblewimble.. Not.. That." He frowned, once more turning to face the doll.

"MIM-BELL-WIM-BELL!" As he slashed his wand through the motions, there was a faint glow of blue at the end of his wand, but once more, nothing truly happened. Once more, he peered over at his sheet. "Stupid incantation." He grumbled to himself, before squaring off with the dummy once again.

"Mimblewimble!" MIM-bull-wim-bull. His enunciation this time, somewhat by luck, was perfect and his wand flashed in a brilliant blue, the wooden tongue of the practicing dumb tying itself together.
