"Oh, that's a shame." He muttered as she mentioned her father having tried to find work within the ministry. He'd assumed there would of been some sort of decree, or whatever, preventing hiring discrimination based upon blood-status, and what-not, but then again, that was probably just as easily circumvented.

"Cool. " He grinned as she forgave him, any sign of building tensions in his shoulders relaxing in an instance, slouching back against the wall, to once again get himself comfortable, no longer needing to feel defensive, or confrontational. "I am sorry though." He reassured her. Apologies didn't come naturally to him, he could count on his hands the amount of times he'd had to apologies prior to today, both in part to him not really doing too much 'wrong', and often just being forgiven ,or his parents taking his side automatically.

"Eights not too bad.. Guess it means you learn about magic for a couple of years before coming here, wouldn't have been as much of a shock. I always wondered that about muggleborns, how they cope with the news.. Learning about all of this." He gestured his arms around. "Only a few months before coming here. "


"Pretty convenient first way to do magic though. Not sure how old I was, but I broke a shelf when my mum wouldn't pass me a toy." He explained, before falling silent, as she began to spoke of her father. "Your dad sounds like.. " His voice trailed off. Was it worth risking another argument? What could he even say that was remotely appropriate? "I dunno, I don't really understand his thinking there. "

"What about your mum then? Do you get along with her more?"

Viva swallowed hard, feeling a lump in the back of her throat. "Yeah," she said. "It is a shame." She let her head fall, but peeked up again when she heard Jacob's second attempt at an apology, which sounded much more sincere. "It's okay," she said softly, "I think we were both being stubborn and not seeing the other person's point of view. We're just different people, from different parts of life. That doesn't mean we can't be friends, though." She smiled at him, her blue eyes sparkling.

They began to get more dull again, though, as he talked about her home life once again. "Hmm. Wasn't your mum... angry?" She wondered out loud. "My dad sounds like what? It's okay, you can say it, I promise not to blow up again." She sighed slowly. "And yes, I get along a little more with my mum. It's funny, when my dad's not around, my mum and I actually... have fun together. We talk and laugh, and it feels so wonderful!" Viva clasped her hands to her chest, smiling, then slowly let them fall as her smile faded. "But when he's around, he's usually angry, so my mum tends to get really quiet and kind of... ignore me?"

"Sounds about right." He nodded, as she mentioned their mutual stubbornness around their earlier argument. "Guess it could be cool to have a friend who knows about muggle stuff, find most of them quite confusing to be honest."

"I don't think my mum was angry." He muttered, trying to cast his mind back. "I was really young though, so I might not remember properly, but I think she probably just happy I wasn't a squib or anything. Not that they were ever worried about that." He paused for a few moments. "I think she might of been more angry before, actually, that's why she wouldn't let me have my toy.. Don't know what I'd of done though, I'm a saint practically."

"Dads sounds like.. " He once again paused, once again beginning to idly fiddle with his sleeves, and robes as he tried to think of an appropriate word. "Idiot. " He eventually settled on. "Doesn't seem fair for him to be upset with you, if he chose to live as a muggle, and marry your mum."

"Nice you get along with your mum thoug-" He began, before falling silent as she mentioned how her mum acted around her dad. "Uh.. " Something light hearted, he glanced around for a few moments, wanting to try and not allow her mind to dwell on her home life. After a moment, his gaze fell onto the book, that'd be sat besides him this entire time, 'The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection'.

"You ever read this? It's a really cool book. My dad bought it for me when I was 10, because I said I wanted to be an Auror, like him."

Raising her eyebrows, Viva startled herself by laughing at his story. "A saint, huh?" she asked sarcastically. "Totally. Yep. One hundred percent believe you. Angel child." She gave him an appraising look.

But a second later, Viva began to feel sad again as they went back to talking about her family life. She felt a tear trying to fall, so she hastily made it look like she had something in her eye. Seriously, why are you telling him all this? You just met the boy! He's just gonna pity you... Viva blinked slowly, then went back to listening to what Jacob was saying.

Idiot? Viva didn't know how she felt about this. She had promised not to get mad, but she didn't feel like arguing anymore. The question was, was that true? Was her father an idiot? She honestly didn't know. She didn't say anything to this statement, just looked down at the ground and shuffled her feet around a little. The following silence was filled with Viva's thoughts, about her past home life.

She looked up as Jacob held up the book she had noticed he seemed very attached to. "Um - yes. I've read that, it's a required textbook for all first years," she reminded him. "I think it is interesting, as interesting as a textbook can be. It's certainly better then that history of magic one," Viva shuddered at the thought. She tilted her head. "You want to be an Auror?"

"Yep. A saint. " He nodded with a grin, the sarcasm not lost on him, but entirely agreeing with her assessment of him as an angel child. "Haven't stepped a foot wrong ever, at home. I think."

As she went to rub her eye, his eyes narrowed slightly, leaning forward as if he was trying to make out if the gesture was covent for something, however, he wasn't quite able to check in time to see the hidden tear, so he slumped back against the wall once again.

"I sort of took it, as you know.. 'Required' " He gestured the quotations around the word in the air with his fingers. "This is the only one I properly read, I think.. I skimmed the others a little, but they seem dull." He nodded along with her assessment of history of magic. "Stupid subject, I think.. Who cares which goblin rebelled, or where the.. I dunno, giants trodded off to? Not me, that's for sure. I'd rather just always do Defence Against the Dark Arts, or maybe transfiguration.. I don't mind transfiguration, it's kind of cool."

"But yeah, I definitely want to be an Auror. I think I always have, ever since I was a kid, just hearing what my dad would get up to sometimes, sounds cool. What about you? Do you have an any clue what you want to do? "

Viva smiled at his description of History of Magic. She covered her mouth with her hand as she gave a little giggle. Honestly, I agree one hundred percent. "I certainly don't care where the giants trodded off to," she said with a smile. Hmm. He's funny. She tilted her head to study him more carefully. He kept surprising her, just when she thought she finally had him figured out.

"I personally think Charms is my favourite class so far," Viva said thoughtfully. "But I have a feeling I am going to really enjoy Care of Magical Creatures in our third year." She looked back at Jacob. "I think that's really cool," she said. "That you want to be an Auror, I mean." Viva shifted her feet around. "I don't really know," she admitted hesitantly. "I think I might want to be an author, I like to write. Or something to do with magical creatures, I absolutely LOVE animals!" She paused, then looked at him again. "And - don't laugh - I kind of have always wanted to be an actress," she mumbled, dragging her foot along the stone floor. Yeah, I know I'm not the most outgoing, crazy person ever. I'm shy and quiet and kind of a nerd, I get it. But it can't hurt to dream, right?

"Exactly. " He grinned, nodding at their mutual lack of care towards the giants destinations, and by extension, History of Magic. "Maybe muggle history might be cooler, I dunno." He said, very much in contrast to many of his comments. "Might be some interesting stuff there, and I doubt many people will ever learn about it, if it isn't taught."

"Charms is good. " He nodded. The subject had completely slipped his mind when he was listing what he found interesting. "Most of the actual practical stuff is good, I guess.. Just not History of Magic, and potentially worse, Astronomy.. Only benefit is that you get to stay up for it, I guess. "

"Third year subjects. " He muttered to himself, quickly trying to recall what they were. "Care of Magical Creatures is probably the only good third year subject, at least that I can think of of the top of my head. " Divination was likely a bunch of made up stuff, after all, and there wasn't a chance he'd even think of taking muggle studies. "I guess it makes sense if you love animals, and are looking forward to that subject.. Maybe you could be a magizoologist, that's a good career. I think one of my friends from when I was a kid had a parent who was a magi zoologist.. Or at least worked with animals, I can't remember. "

"Actress. " He echoed, glancing down at the floor for a moment, as he thought. "Like in muggle stuff?" He was just about familiar enough with muggle culture, to know about films, having seen advertisements for them around London. "Maybe that'd be fun, but wouldn't you want to do something with magic?"

Viva nodded. She agreed with Jacob completely. It felt nice to finally agree on something. "I always feel so tired in Astronomy," she said. "I need my sleep!" Laughing, she leaned against the stone wall again. "Also, muggle history is definitely NOT better, sometimes it's way worse even!" But as she laughed, something niggled in her mind. Is he actually suggesting that something in the muggle world might be better then in the Wizarding World? He's really trying to listen and understand. She felt another rush of gratitude for Jacob.

"Yeah," she agreed about the third year classes. "I don't think I'd be much good at Divination, not much of a seer, really. Also, I am, like, ninety-nine percent sure that half of all those 'prophecies' are actually just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo. Oh, a Magizooligist would be fun!" She clapped her hands together. "I would love that."

Slowly her smile began to fall as she realized Jacob was probably judging her again. "Yes," she said, a little bit defensively. "And no, I don't particularly care if I work with magic or not, the jobs can both be amazing." She crossed her arms and looked at him, hoping he wouldn't start this again. She didn't want to keep explaining the same thing over and over.

"Exactly!" He nodded his agreement to her saying she needed her sleep. "I can never function properly after astronomy, I run the risk of falling asleep in my breakfast which would be embarrassing." He seemed slightly confused by her mentioning how muggle history could be even worse than magical history, but it did make some sense, considering she had grown up with exposure to both worlds. "Can't imagine much worse, to be honest with you.. Maybe I'll have a look one day if I ever find myself in the library. "

"Divination is dumb." He began, before quickly adding. "You're probably right about it being mumbo-jumbo, my mum says most of its made up, and that she regretted ever taking that subject.. That's all she ever said about it, I think, so it must of been pretty bad. She normally likes talking about Hogwarts with me. "

"You should think about it when you're older, if you like animals, definitely. " Admittedly, they had many years yet before they even had to think about careers, so it likely wasn't worth much thought. Though, Jacob had been set on his career for as long as he could remember.

"You really don't mind? " He looked somewhat surprised by her words, leaning back against the wall with a frown. "Can't imagine a job where I couldn't do any kind of magic.. Ever since I got to Hogwarts, I've loved any chance I got to cast magic, I don't think I'd want to go back on that.. But I guess you lived most of your life not around it, so it sort off makes sense."

Viva sighed. "No, I really don't mind," she said. "I keep telling you that just because you can use magic for something doesn't make it better. Sure, things are definitely 'easier' with magic, but does that make it better? Is easy the best way?" She was trying to explain herself to Jacob without getting angry again, and so far it was working. She was managing to stay calm this time, which she was rather proud of herself for.

Looking around the corridor, she realized it was getting later and later as time went on. "Well, I should probably go back to my common room now," she said shyly. "I have a lot of homework to do. A whole four foot essay for History of Magic, ugh." Giving a little giggle, Viva slung her bag over her shoulder and then tilted her head as she turned back to Jacob. "Well, it was honestly nice to meet you. Even if we did have a little... argument... in the middle. I think you're a nice boy, and I hope to see you around." Viva gave him a last smile, lips parting gently, as she turned her heel and started walking away, towards the cellar where the Hufflepuff common room was. I hope I see him again, she thought as she walked away.
