|| The Book of Futures: Rowan Bane ||

I am the record of hopes, dreams, and reasons to fight for generations to look back on.

Reducio
Hi friends! For those of you who know me, Hi, and to those of you who don't, Welcome. My screen name is Nocturne Bane, and I have a character here on HIO that goes by the name of Rowan Bane. This is going to be a series of various pieces of where people see there character going in the future. I'm starting with my character, because it's the best example I can give. I will be accepting commissions so if you want to see your character here in the future, go ahead and send me an owl! Otherwise, this thread is mostly me being bored and needing somewhere to do something when YouTube is out of videos, and people aren't online.

And some general things to know:
  • None of this is cannon, do not treat it as such, this is the future after all
  • I could, and may add anything to these posts, lists, exc
  • Please don't get offended by this writing, most of it is going to be sleep deprived

Many people were offput when they saw a healer in a wheelchair. A product of injury fixing the injured.

a bad omen
It was difficult too. He couldn't lift as much as the other nurses. He always had to ask for assistance if he needed to move a patient from the bed, or anything that required any lower body strength. Though otherwise he was fine. Rowan did his job just as well as everyone else, and he had learned to accept the fact that he needed help. He had strengths in other areas.

will I end up like him?
In fact, he did his job better than some. He got better results. He worked longer hours. He handled the most difficult patients. Was the most adaptive worker. Rowan took care of adults, children, infants, you name it. He had even been offered the position of Head Healer. One of the youngest to be considered, and chosen for the job.

I don't want to be stuck like that!
Though he turned it down. He knew he would be taken away from the bulk of the hands on work. Call him crazy, but he didn't want some high up honor like that. He had never been the one for the fancy jobs. He wanted to be hands on and doing the harder work that no one else wanted. He mostly worked to help patients recover these days though.

why doesn't he just get up and walk?

what even is that thing?

                                                            Is he okay?

“What's wrong with him, mummy?”

A parent had brought their child into work, or maybe it was the child of a patient. Either way, the little boy pointed to him and asked the obvious question. The parent, who was sitting right next to him, quickly shushed him and made him lower his arm.

Rowan had been going to deliver paperwork from his last case. A young witch who had been experimenting and blown off her right arm as her wand backfired. He would be working with her for weeks after, he already knew this, but his next move was to get her a guide. He often reached out to try and find someone willing to speak on how they coped with their injuries. It helped new patients much better on their road to recovery, he found. He was still working to see what he could do to reverse some of the damage, but likely she wouldn’t be able to make a full recovery.

Though as he did not have a time limit on the paperwork, he stopped dead in his tracks and looked to the boy. His watchful eye did not miss the mother whispering to him. Rowan rolled over, papers in his lap.

You see, the thing with children, is that they are very impressionable, and unless there is a big event, those veiws do not change easily. Rowan wanted to make sure he started on the right foot.

“May I?”

He asked the mother, gesturing to the boy. Permission to speak, as you will. Rowan didn’t like to do many things without asking first. Giving everyone choice often made them like him easier. Anyhow, the woman nodded, so he started speaking.

“What’s your name bud?”

“David!”

He sounded so happy about that. So jumpy too, excited about everything it seemed.  Rowan liked that.

“Why are you here today, David?”

“Oh, dad works here. Mum just said we were waiting for him to wrap up.”

“Alright then. Why did you ask that question about me, David? The way you said it was awfully mean.”

“Oh- no- I didn’t mean it like that... You’re just-  not walking like everyone else. You’re in a chair that moves. And you’re a nurse too! I’ve only seen hurt people in those chairs!”

“Good observations. It’s called a wheelchair. I’m in it because I got hurt awhile ago and I can’t walk anymore. It helps me get around, because my legs don’t work. Without it I couldn’t move.”

“Well- can’t you just get your legs fixed?”

“Nope. Magical injury. Which means it can’t be fixed as easily as everything else. Mine is tricky. Though you should really be more careful with your words, because they sounded mean at first. If I hadn’t stopped I would have thought you were quite rude.”

“I’ll try...”

Rowan sighed softly, nodding as he turned away. He probably wouldn’t remember it, but he tried to at least teach him something. He rolled back, turning to leave. He had work to do after all, with one of his most stubborn cases next

The girl’s frustrated screams wracked his mind. They had been at this for an hour. Physical therapy was always the hardest, after all, especially with teens of this caliber. She was giving up on him, which was the most infuriating part. Her legs couldn’t recover if she didn’t try. She had gotten past the excitement of the first few steps weeks ago, now giving up to even get three in, when he knew she could walk up and down the halls.

“I can’t do it! You’re just humiliating me at this point! Why the hell are you of all people trying to teach me how to walk?! You can’t even...”

Her words died in her mouth, angry temper to an end. She sat infront of him on the floor, braces on her legs still, and crutches chucked across the room. The replacement nurse stood waiting at the door. He was supposed to leave twenty minutes ago, but he wasn’t about to have this go unfinished.

“I’ve known you for four months, but still, that’s a low blow even for you. Come on. Get up. We’re not done yet. I’ll get your crutches that you so rudely threw.”

Rowan rolled over to the replacement nurse first though. The female raised an eyebrow as if to say, ‘are you tapping out yet?’ He waved a hand, sighing softly. Like hell he would tap out.

“I need you to do me a favour. Two, actually. Send an owl to my husband, telling him I’ll be late, and I need you to get my set of braces from Vivian. Preferably the braces first.”

She nodded slightly, glancing back into the room.

“You’re the boss. I’ll do whatever you want pretty much as long as I don’t have to fight with pissy pants over there.”

He shrugged and started rolling over to the crutches. This was going to be a long day, but if she completed the task, it was going to be worth it.

“Alright. Walk to the wall, and I’m out of your hair. You know how this works by now.”

“I can’t though! You saw me! I fell after like what, two? Two steps! My stupid legs still don’t work!”

“Do you want me to show you up, missy?”

“You can’t even-“

“Catch!”

Her shrill shriek hurt his head, but was worth it as he tossed the crutches to her. She caught them, of course. A grin was settled on his face as he watched her smack the floor in annoyance.

“You can’t even walk! How are you supposed to show me up?”

“I can, technically. And if that’s what it takes to get you to take those steps, I will do it. Here. I’ll make you a deal. If you can beat me in a race to that wall, I’ll get you whatever you want for dessert tomorrow.”

“That’ll be easy!”

“AHAH! See? Where was that I can’t from a minute ago? Let’s do it then.”

“I-“

“Nope! Not hearing it! Get up!”

Right on time, the relief nurse walked in, handing Rowan his leg braces and a pair of crutches, so he could race the girl properly. She was purely challange motivated, so Rowan always had to go overboard with something like this to get her up and trying again. As he strapped the braces to his legs, and the crutches to his arms, he took a shaky standing step.

“You okay there old man?”

“Yeah, yeah, shush. I’ll beat you still.”

He walked over to her on the opposite wall, slowly, but he walked nonetheless. Leaning heavily on the crutches on his arms, and braces that went all the way up to his hips, but he walked. Something he rarely did these days.

The girl wasn’t much better off. She had weak hip movements, and her leg muscles were next to nothing, so steps were hard for her, but easier in comparison to Rowan. Without the braces, both of them wouldn’t be able to stand. Without the crutches, Rowan wouldn’t be able to walk.

“Alright punk, ready?”

“I’m ready old man. You sure you can make it?”

“Hell yeah. Alright... Three, two- Hey! Cheater!”

He was grinning though. She had taken off before he even said go, but that was even better than he would have ever expected. The bait had been more than enough of a push to get her speed walking all the way to the other wall in a matter of seconds. It took Rowan a little longer, but he made it as well.

“That wasn’t so bad, was it?”

“You look like you’re gonna fall over. And you owe me dessert.”

“And there, you are right, brat.”

“ROWAN!”

And then there were the days when it took every ounce of his energy to keep breathing. He had medications to help with pain, but they only did so much. He had to fight to keep awake and moving.

“Rowan, Rowan breathe. C’mon, stay with me. You just gotta get the tonic down- then you’ll feel better.”

He took big, gulping breaths as he woke up, waving his hand for the bottle he knew would be held out to him. His hand closed around the cool plastic.

“There you go. Almost there.”

His vision was blurry, but he brought the container to his lips with some help from the male. Who? Well, that would be one of the other nurses on duty. Rowan didn’t know who specifically. All that mattered is that they kept him alive. He hadn’t even made it home yet. He had just closed the case with the girl, after all.

As he finished off the bottle of tonic water, his vision began to slowly clear, and his laboured breaths slowed. The pain gave way to relief and he slumped back in his chair, running his fingers through his hair. Evey day he fought.

Tripod, his lovely cat walked from behind the desk, and jumped up onto his lap, with all his three legged glory. Every day he fought, but it was worth it, for so many reasons.

Often lying, but not to you.
