Finished Animal friends PV Rose Moon

Rose was walking along the edge of the Lake. Taking walks was always a calming part of her routine, but especially lately. With all that happened over the winter break, Rose needed time to think and relax. Since school got back in session, she had been pouring over textbooks and research about animagi, and once she started the process of becoming one herself, she had that to focus on. But ever since she had actually become an animagus, she felt like she had much less to do in order to distract herself.

And so, she took walks on the grounds, usually in her cat form, because of her thick fur that protected her naturally against the chill. She was grateful for the sun on her back as she strode along the lake's edge. It actually made it quite nice. Rose kept hoping that spring was coming soon, and this was a pretty good sign that it was.

Then, she saw a kid. She turned her head on its side, debating whether or not to approach him. She decided to- after all, why not? Maybe she could make a new friend. She came up to him and sat in front of him, analyzing him for a second. He seemed young, so she could guess that he was a first year. He had blond hair and freckles. She didn't know why- maybe it was a cat's intuition- but she felt like she could trust him. The calico cat approached him, and took a seat in front of him.

The cat had decided to sit directly in front of him, staring at them as if the cat was studying them. Mylo looked at them trying to see if they were wearing a collar with a name or anything but couldn't see one, 'probably just some other students pet that they had let walk around the grounds' he thought to himself.

"Hey buddy, aren't you gorgeous, some lovely fur you've got there. Are you enjoying your walk around the lake? It's quite pretty isn't it, I love the way the sun reflects off it." Mylo said to the cat, they had always loved talking to animals, not getting the same anxious feeling around them as he would get around other people. They quite often would find themselves rambling on about everything and nothing to any animal that would sit around him.

"I wonder, do many students let their pets walk around so freely? Oh, are you magical as well?? That's something I've been wondering, like the students are magical do their pets also have some magical abilities or something? That would be really quite cool, just imagine a cat like you blasting some magical spell at someone else lol. That would be quite the sight, I think my little sister would be so exited if that was true, she loves magic and animals. So imagine how exited she would be to hear about magical animals. Anyways, if you want to sit here with me I'd be honoured, it's quite a nice spot. Plenty of sun and nice grass to lie in." Hoping the cat would stay Mylo closes their eyes for a bit just taking in the sounds of nature and the water around them.

The kid complimented her fur, and if Rose was in her human form, she likely would have blushed a little. That was such a nice thing to say! Rose's whiskers twitched and she stood up, doing a little spin to show off her coat. She remembered one of the first times as an animagus that she looked in a mirror. It was such a surreal experience, and she almost didn't believe it, but there she was- a cat. Rose always thought her green eyes and patches of reddish fur suited her, since it was similar to her in her human form. It made her almost surprised she wasn't a ginger cat, since those had orange hair all over that was similar to her hair color. But no, she had heard the crazy nature of some ginger cats, and that didn't suit her at all. With her cute little white paws and elegant tail, it was hard to explain, but Rose just felt like herself, even though she was a completely different species.

They did call her "buddy," which was kind of weird. Since she had always presented in a feminine manner, she was rarely called that. She supposed that it was much more difficult to know her gender when she was a different species, but still, a strange occurrence.

She turned and looked at the lake as the kid mentioned it. It really was mesmerizing to watch- the light dancing on the surface, the water moving gently. Now that she thought about it, she had been enjoying her walk, and she still was, since now she had someone to talk to.

Well, she supposed she wasn't doing a lot of talking. It was mostly the kid talking, but as he started talking about the pets around Hogwarts, she sat back down to listen to him. They were talking about if she was magical or not, and Rose listened to him talk. She remembered when she was around their age. She didn't know it then, but life was a little easier four years ago. She smiled as they started to talk about magical creatures. She loved magical creatures herself, but she herself wasn't a magical creature.

The kid leaned back to rest in the sun, and she turned to watch the lake for a moment. It was quiet for a moment, and strangely relaxing to be out here with this kid she didn't know.

Then, Rose started to feel slightly guilty. He was talking to her like she was a cat- they didn't know that she was really another student here. It was almost like she was lying to him.

Rose shifted back into her human form. The kid was still sitting with his eyes closed. She tucked her hands behind her back. "Uhm- hi."

With the sun beaming down on their face Mylo started to feel a sort of peace come over them, they loved these days where he could just sit outside and enjoy the feelings and sounds of the nature around them.

It reminded them of the days back home, where he would go out with his family on weekends and they would just walk through forests and enjoy each others company. It would often include a picnic and a bit of a playfight in the grass but that was his favourite part. He kind of missed it.

Out of nowhere he heard a voice greeting them, not having realized there was another person there with them Mylo jumped a little. "Jezus.... Sorry, uhm hi. I didn't realize there was someone else here." Looking around for the cat he noticed that they weren't here anymore, they felt a little disappointed, but they knew that the cat might not have wanted to sit with him for long. 'It is a little chilly out here, they might just have gone to find a warm corner or something.' They thought, trying to compose themselves from the scare.

"Sorry, but did you see a cat around here? Calico fur, uhm green eyes? If not don't worry, probably went to find a warmer spot or something." He says, still scanning around him to see if they could spot the cat.

Realizing the student probably came to him for a reason they turn to look at her still kind of preoccupied with seeing if they could spot the cat. "Ah, is there a reason you came to see me?" 'Jeez dude, could you have been any ruder asking that.' they thought, cringing at the way it came out. "S-sorry that came out wrong, can I help you?"

The kid looked confused as he realized she was standing there. He asked a couple of questions, but was overall puzzled at why she had come up to him. Oh- right. His eyes had been closed. There was no way for him to have known that she was the cat. She scratched her head. "Uhm- so the thing is- I was actually the cat."

Okay, that just made her sound crazy. He hadn't seen her transform, so he had no idea what was really going on. She looked like a girl- how could she be a calico cat? In her efforts to make sure she wasn't lying to him, she probably just made the kid more confused. "If you don't believe me, I can show you," she said. She took a step back and shifted into a cat, did a spin, and then back into a human. "I'm sorry if I made this awkward, it just felt weird that you didn't know. I didn't want you to say something without knowing that I was actually a witch."

She didn't need to know his deepest darkest secrets, if he was to say that to a cat. Rose knew that she might have done that herself, if not to a random cat, then at least to her own cat, Chaska.

"So, to answer your earlier question, I guess I am a magical cat?"

'What can magic not do?' Mylo thinks to themselves as new information comes to light that the cat he was looking for, whom they had been looking for for the past few minutes, was apparently standing in front of them. In human form. No, the human was previously standing in front of him in cat form.

A human who can turn into a cat. Could they turn into other animals? What was it like? Did it hurt? So many questions started to flood into Mylo's head. Rose could probably see his brain shortcutting as she transformed into the cat he had seen earlier, did a little spin and then transformed back. Leaving Mylo a little speechless, one of his questions answered as she showed no sign of pain or discomfort.

"Holy cheese, that is.... I don't know. Can everyone do that?" He asked, suddenly thinking what it would be like to come home and being able to pester his little sister in many new ways. Suddenly a thought pops into their mind. "Oh, is this one of the more advanced transfiguration spells? I thought you weren't allowed to transform living beings without an adult present though." Mylo asks, curious about this new magic.

"And I'm sorry, I rambled on a bit while you were in your cat form. I didn't quite mean to do that." He nervously adds, not used to talking so much to people they don't know and not wanting to be seen as annoying.

Rose bit back a giggle at his exclamation- Holy cheese. She didn't know that was something that people said, but it was charming nonetheless. He asked a few questions, and it dawned on her that he had no idea what an animagus was. Or, maybe he did, and just hadn't ever seen one before. That was strange, at first, to her, because she had grown up hearing stories about animagi. They were just another part of wizarding life. Though she would have been surprised to see one in real life, she would know exactly what it meant when somebody transformed into an animal before her eyes.

Perhaps the kid was a muggle-born. She supposed that made the most sense. "Well, I'm an animagus," she explained. "That's a witch or wizard that can turn into an animal at will. It's kind of a long process, so not a lot of people do it."

The kid seemed almost speechless at her transformation, and she felt bad for springing it on them. He probably was just enjoying her feline company, and didn't want to interact with a human. She knew how that felt. "No, that's totally fine. I liked listening to you. I just didn't want you to say anything without knowing that I'm actually a witch." She tucked her hands behind her back. "Whenever I interact with other people in my cat form, I kind of feel like I'm lying to them. I'm technically not, but I don't think it's fair that they don't know I'm human. Don't you think?" she asked.

Rose shook her head. "Anyway, I'm so sorry- what's your name? Is it okay if I sit with you?"

She didn't seem to mind that they had rambled on, going on to talk a bit about 'animal transformer spell' as he had dubbed it in their mind before 'An animagus, quite a cool name' they thought, wondering what it would take to become one. Rose mentioned that it was quite a long process, 'So not a natural born talent', but how long was long? And wouldn't being able to turn into any animal be worth a bit of time out of your life? Thinking about it Mylo came to the conclusion that there must be something else within the process that meant that not many people would want to complete the 'ritual'.

As many possibilities surfaced about what could possibly deter people from wanting to do the process to become any animal Rose mentioned that she liked listening to Mylo talk, this calmed them ever so slightly. He had had one to many encounters of people telling them to stop talking, or seeming annoyed when he rambled on about anything. Even people who liked them, and whom he knew didn't mean it maliciously, sometimes did it and it wouldn't help the anxious feelings they got.

"Yeah, I can understand that. I would feel like I'd be intruding on people if they though they were talking to an animal. And I'm Mylo by the way, you? And if you want to sit that's okay!" He says gesturing next to them realising they also didn't know her name.

"Although I can definitely see people enjoying the fact that they could spy on others without their knowledge. Is there some kind of spell or charm you could use to detect, uhm... the animal transformer spell?" The name she had mentioned earlier completely slipping their mind for a second. "Oh yeah, to detect an animagus?"

"Also Is this something we'll learn about in class?" He asks, wondering if they would be able to learn this skill as well.

The other student agreed with her, saying that he understood her reasoning. She was glad he understood, and didn't think she was just some weird girl coming up to talk to him. (Or worse- that she was trying to show off. That wasn't her intention at all.) "Oh, good. I'm glad you understand."

Mylo. That wasn't a very common name. He asked her name in reply. "I'm Rose," she said, taking a seat on the grass next to Mylo. "Thanks," she said, smiling. "What house are you in? I don't think I've really seen you around before." If they hadn't crossed paths this far into the school year, he probably wasn't a fifth year, probably wasn't a Gryffindor, and definitely wasn't both.

Mylo went on to say that others might spy on people with the animagus ability. She figured that was fair- very few people knew that she was an animagus, and even fewer knew what she looked like in her feline form. She hadn't really thought about it before, but it would be easy to get all kinds of information and gossip from others- maybe even test answers. But Rose wasn't really that kind of person. She didn't enjoy being sneaky or spying on others, or even gossiping, really. She decided that she would only use her ability in that way if it was absolutely necessary. For now, she was content sitting curled up in the sun, talking with other cats (That was a whole different story. Cats were fascinating to talk to, now that she could understand them.), and overall just spending time without being recognized.

The kid then asked if there was a way to detect being an animagus. Rose had to think for a moment. "Actually, I think there is. If an animagus is in their animal form, there's a spell that will turn them back." She shrugged. "I don't know the incantation, but I did learn about it when I was researching animagi. It doesn't hurt an animal if they aren't an animagus, so I guess you could walk around school casting it on any animal you see and maybe one of them will turn into a person," she laughed.

Rose crossed her legs and leaned back on her hands, looking up at the sky as she thought. "I don't think it's covered in class. It's definitely not advertised in class. The process is pretty long and complicated, and not for the faint of heart, if you know what I mean," she said, a smile on her face. "And definitely not for younger years," she added. "I would recommend it, but probably not until your fifth year or after," she said. Rose smiled. "Once you're a fifth year, send me an owl and maybe I can help you," she offered. "Which year are you in?" she asked.
