Lucey glanced around the station. There were forty-six parents, sixty-two kids who weren't on the train yet, and twenty-one creeps who were here for no other reason than to ogle the parents, and maybe even the children too. The train had five carriages, each carriage with ten compartments, and each compartment with six seats. That meant the train had a capacity of three hundred people, and there were two hundred and twenty-four kids in the school (four boys and four girls in each house, four houses, seven years.) Lucey's brow furrowed as she tried to work out the approximation of people per compartment, as it would be useful when finding a place to sit. Apparently, you can meet some of your best friends and worst enemies on the Hogwarts Express. At least, that's what Lola said, but Lola offered her a tampon when she got a nosebleed once, so her sister wasn't the most reliable source.
Lucey navigated her way through the one hundred and twenty-nine people standing on the platform and reached the door to the train. A few Seventh-Years walked past her, laughing too loudly. Lucey bit her bottom lip. The lights flickered as she moved into one of the compartments, then remembered she didn't knock.
"Hi, um, is it okay if I sit here?" Lucey asked tentatively. The kids shrugged and nodded. She analysed them individually. The first was a girl who reminded her of glass - shiny and flawless. Her hair was pulled back into a shimmering black ponytail, her lips lined with gloss and her skin moisturised to the point of perfection. She was maybe in her 3rd Year. The second kid was the same age as Lucey. He had the same shiny black hair, except his hair was short and tousled, unlike the girl's sleek black ponytail. His eyes glittered with a certain confidence carried only by purebloods.
The third was a bold contrast to the other two. Her hair started out brown, at the top, then melted into streaks of purple. She was Lucey's age, although she looked younger. Nervous, inquisitive green eyes blinked at Lucey as she placed her bag on the overhead luggage carrier and took a seat.
"I'm Lucey," she smiled and extended a hand to the girl with the ombre hair.
"Sage," the girl replied. "My name is Sage Nightshade."
"Holy feck. The Sage Nightshade? Daughter of Cox Nightshade, Minister for Magic?" Lucey murmured in disbelief. Although she had only been told of this world in July, everyone knew who Cox Nightshade was, and especially his daughter. Sage had founded the Department For Diverse Wizards and Witches by age 8.
"The one and only," the glossy-haired girl grinned. "Sage here is my godsister and Dustin's best friend. Proud to know her."
The shiny-eyed boy bit his lip and glanced at Sage. "She's more than her status, you know, Olive."
"Well, I know that, obviously. It's just so Lucky knows who she is. She's grown up a Muggle, she might not know about Sage."
"It's Lucey, actually," Lucey corrected. "Also, how did you know I grew up a Muggle? I never told you that."
"Didn't need to, sweetpea. Couldn't look more out of place if you tried." Lucey wanted to say something back, but Olive wasn't wrong. She was... she just wasn't at home here.
"Anything from the trolley, dears?" Lucey startled and spun around. A smiling, plump old lady was wheeling around a metal trolley filled to the brim with sweets. This must be the trolley witch.
"Sorry, I don't have any money," Lucey smiled ruefully.
"We'll get four of everything," Sage said abruptly, then handed the trolley witch a full sack of galleons. Lucey's eyes widened.
"Holy feck," Lucey muttered under her breath. She wasn't lying about being the Minister's daughter. Lucey had never seen that much money in one place before.
They hauled the sweets into the compartment and she ate like she had never eaten before. Lucey had friends back in Ireland - you could even consider her popular - but no one had ever done something like that before.
No one had treated her like a human.

Theodore stood in the train's hallway, waving to his parents through the window as it departed from the station. Although a smile crossed his face, his true intent was to ensure they were genuinely gone. As they vanished from sight, his expression turned into a dull frown, and he shifted his focus to finding a seat. He strolled through the carriages, but the majority appeared to be almost full. He paused in front of a private compartment occupied by four children. Although he had heard from an older student that the maximum seating per private compartment was eight, as he glanced through the window, he hesitated and wasn't so certain.

Eventually, he mustered enough courage to enter without knocking, possibly due to forgetfulness or a disregard for manners. Clearing his throat, he interrupted anyone speaking to make his point. "The other compartments are quite full. Hope you don't mind if I join you," he said before taking a seat. The other children now had a good look at him, and he, in turn, observed them, taking in their appearances. He was white, with well-kept ashen hair and long, narrow features on his face that bore a stern look, as if he were constantly displeased by something.

Theo didn’t recognize the supposedly famous person, and, for that matter, didn’t know who the Minister for Magic was. All this was very new to him, being Muggle-born. However, he could tell from the expressions and goggling going on in the compartment that this Sage was a big deal. “Sweets rot your teeth, you know.” He said, seemingly out of nowhere as he stared in disbelief at the amount of candies littering the compartment. As soon as he said it, he felt a bit rude. Before anyone could speak, he followed it up with, "I’m Theo, by the way. Theo Vendeberg. First year." introducing himself in an attempt to come across as more polite.

Lucey assessed him carefully. Judging from his accent, he was British in nationality, probably from Manchester or Liverpool. His surname was German, though. His family had immigrated at some point in the past, seeing as Hogwarts didn't accept international students - plus the accent was English.
"Lucey Lopez-Murphy. First-year, also," she said.
Theo gave a tight smile. It looked like it had been carefully practised, yet it still felt like there was hatred behind his grin. Lucey returned a small smile. "By the way, it's not the sweets that rot your teeth, it's the sugar. And these sweets are full of sweeteners, yet not a single grain of sugar. So, no, these won't rot our teeth."
Theo went red. He clearly wasn't used to being corrected. A muggleborn, Lucey thought. It explained the ignorance about wizard sweets.
"I'm Olive, and this is Dustin," Olive interrupted, clearly sensing the tension. "And this is Sage, daughter of the Minister for Magic," Olive said proudly, dimples curving her cheeks. Sage let out a small exhale of boredom through her nose.
"What's the Minister for Magic?" asked Theo. Lucey furrowed her brow, Olive's nostrils flared and Sage's lips curled into a smile.
"Just some admin job in the government. Nothing important, really," Sage said hastily before the others could answer.
"Why's it such a big deal, then?"
"Lots of... publicity," Lucey said, trying to cover for Sage.

((ooc note: Hi. In your post above you did some slight god-modding. I am guessing it is because you are new to RP. Although in this instance I personally did not mind it. Despite learning the sweets were sugar-free, Theodore still resisted trying any. It wasn't that he suspected deception; he simply didn't want to take the risk. The first eleven years of his life had ingrained in him the belief that indulging in sweets could lead to his life falling apart by some unknown means. Being corrected bothered him slightly, but he chose not to retort. After all, he realised he shouldn't have spoken up in the first place. His tendency to act impulsively often led him to make spontaneous judgments about others, which he found cathartic.

The boy had encountered the term 'Ministry for Magic' a few times before, but this was the first occasion he truly pondered its meaning. Numerous questions raced through his mind: Why was it termed a ministry? Did the Minister for Magic participate in the Muggle Prime Minister's cabinet alongside the Ministers for Agriculture and Defence? He didn't vocalise these thoughts, opting instead to sit in contemplative silence.

Eventually, he decided to initiate some small talk, considering the long hours ahead on the train. His curiosity was especially piqued by the third-year student, who had actual experience at the school. "What are the teachers like? Are they strict? What's detention like? Does learning spells come more naturally to some than others?" Theo realised he had bombarded her with questions without giving her a chance to respond and promptly closed his mouth.

"The teachers vary. Some are lovely, while some are absolute demons," replied Olive. "Detention is pretty much just the same as Muggle school, where you stay after class to write lines. Yes, spells come more naturally to some than others, but others have the same aptitude to learn them. That's why I strongly suggest you pay attention in class."
"I'm a First Year, too, but I reckon you'll be fine. Around a third of kids here are mudbloods," Dustin said.
Olive went a sickly shade of grey and her palm came rushing towards his face. He cried out in pain and cradled his cheek. When Dustin pulled his hand back, his eye was purple. "What was that for?"
"Do not," Olive hissed, "Do not say that word. Ever."
"Why the hell not? It's just a word."
"It's not just a word, birdbrain. You realise it's offensive, bordering on actionable."
Dustin shrugged. "Dad says it all the time. I don't see the problem. It means the same as muggle-born, don't it?"
"Doesn't," Olive corrected. "And besides, it's still absolutely unacceptable to say, especially in front of a Muggle-Born."
Lucey felt extremely uncomfortable watching this debate. Although her mother was a witch, she didn't know this world existed until July, when she found out that her sister wasn't in a plain English boarding school, but attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where she would soon be joining. She had grown up as a Muggle. An occasionally telekinetic Muggle, but a Muggle nonetheless.
"So, um, what house are you in, Olive?" Lucey interrupted, heat rushing to her cheeks.
"Slytherin," Olive said proudly. "The house of elites. Dustin's gonna join me there, ain't you, birdbrain?"
"Hopefully. Then again, Gryffindor wouldn't be so] bad. As long as we win the House Cup, I'm happy."

Theo listened intently as Olive answered his questions, but as she droned on his expression became dull. Perhaps he was secretly hoping to hear fantastical and wondrous stories. If the schooling was as similar to the muggle equivalent as she described, then it would be boring, but perhaps he would fit in easily.

The boy had no idea what the term ‘mud-blood’ meant and this was his first time hearing it. Theo wasn’t offended, or frowning, but his expression turned to that of confusion as he watched Olive assault Dustin for using the phrase. As the debate continued, Theo deduced that it was a racial term, used to describe people with muggle parents, but the particulars were lost on him.

“I’m a mudblood?” He asked rather naively, as he struggled to understand the culture behind the confusing genealogy. He looked at Lucey first for an answer, as she was quietly watching the argument unfold too.

A few moments later and the conversation topic had changed, for the better. Theodore’s knowledge of the house system was fairly lacking and he listened closely. “I’ve seen red, yellow, green and blue robes.” He explained, which was the extent of his understanding. A word Olive used suddenly caught his ear: ‘Elites’. Now that was something Theo could get behind, being a collector of elite club memberships back in the muggle world. This one word sold him on the idea of being a Syltherin. “That’s the house I want.” He stated.

Sage sighed. "No, you don't want that. Slytherin is full of narcissistic, pretentious sociopaths who would do anything to get what they want."
"Excuse me, Sage Brigitte Nightshade, but I wouldn't do anything to get want," Olive retorted. "I'd just, maybe... hurt and/or kill people to get what I want. It's called ambition, sweetcheeks. Besides, Slytherin usually doesn't accept Muggle-borns. No offence."
"No, wasn't Alecto a Muggle-born?" Dustin asked.
"Half-blood," corrected Olive. "It's not to say that it's impossible, but Salazar Slytherin was incredibly prejudiced towards them. They'd have to be extremely cunning and ambitious to get in. Like, to the point where you would kill those you love to make an extra thousand pounds."
Lucey sighed. "A mudblood, Theo, is a derogatory word for a magical person with non-magical parents. The correct term should be Muggle-born since Muggles are those who aren't magic. You are Muggle-born. Someone like me, with one magical parent and one Muggle parent, is called a half-blood. And purebloods, who have two magical parents, are those three."
"Most Slytherins are purebloods," added Olive. "There's the occasional half-blood, and probably a Muggle-born every century or two. Besides, Slytherin isn't all it's cracked up to be. They don't even win everything. It's usually Gryffindor or Ravenclaw who take home all the cups. Hufflepuff won the last house cup, but that was because a girl in the Third Year found the Groundskeeper's missing dog and won two hundred house points. Hufflepuffs are mostly simpletons, to be honest."
Lucey pressed her lips tight together and willed herself not to start screaming at Olive. Her mother and sister were Hufflepuffs. It was even her sister who found the dog. Didn't they know her mother was a Daily Prophet bestselling author? And her sister had an O average in every single class? Didn't they know Hufflepuff had turned out the least amount of dark witches, ever?

‘I would do anything to get what I want.’ Theo thought to himself as he fixed his hair, brushing it back with his hand. He hadn’t been convinced that Slytherin wasn’t the right house for him. In fact, now he only wanted it more knowing it would most likely be denied to him because of his blood. The boy sat back against the train seat and zoned out as the other students discussed Salazar. He only snapped back to reality at the mention of money, his brow raised. “Only a thousand? Hmmm.” He thought it over. “Put an extra two zeros on the end, then we’re talking.” He said with a smile. Possibly a joke, though it wasn’t easy to tell from his expression.

After lucey’s explanation of how blood-types worked, the boy clearly had a lot of questions. He opened and closed his mouth several times, but eventually decided on just keeping it to himself for now.

Theodore’s stomach grumbled. He eyed the wizard sweets covetously for a while, but really didn’t want to give in. Eventually, he sighed and canted his head nervously. “Which -eh sweets are the best ones?” He said, not directly asking if he could have some sweets, but heavily implying it.
