Theo shifted in bed, eyeing his planner and discovering a double Transfiguration class scheduled for the morning. He let out a helpless groan before ultimately deciding to rise and prepare for the day. He journeyed from Gryffindor tower to the classroom, a comb in hand, tidying his hair as he entered and casually dropping his bag near an available chair. Directly across from him sat a Ravenclaw student who briefly captured his attention. He regarded her with an entirely inscrutable expression, silently assessing her.
Theo took his seat and cracked open his textbook, preparing for the day's lesson. As the professor began speaking, the girl beside him initiated a hushed conversation. Annoyance briefly flickered across his face; he glanced at her and then refocused on the teacher, pointedly disregarding her attempts at conversation. Only as the exercise commenced and the room buzzed with student chatter did he cast a glance in her direction. "You're Irish," he stated, making a glaringly obvious observation based on her accent. However, he didn’t necessarily mean anything bad by it.
"I'm Theodore," he introduced himself, but that was the extent of it. He then redirected his attention to the exercise. "Flintifors!" he commanded, waving his wand somewhat clumsily. However, nothing happened, prompting him to glance back at the textbook to re-read the instructions. "Turning things into matchboxes, how pointless. Haven't these wizards ever heard of a lighter? Who still uses matchboxes these days?" he remarked aloud, inadvertently exposing his Muggle-born background.

Theodore was slightly taken aback by Quinn’s initial question, he mulled it over in his head before replying. “I’ve just not met many Irish people where I’m from. There was a girl at my primary school that got expelled for bad behaviour, though she had a much softer accent than yours.” He started to ramble slightly, not giving Quinn eye contact and instead his eyes wandered around the room as if he was daydreaming. Suddenly he became self conscious of this and his attention snapped back to Quinn. “Northern or republic?” He asked, referring to Quinn’s Irish roots.
“Don’t get me wrong, transfiguration is one of the only kinds of magic that I’m interested in.” He paused for a moment and turned the page on his textbook, before continuing. “Particularly, the kind of magic that deals with self-transfiguration. Freeing the mind from the limitations of the human body.” He mewed, with a smile on his face as he fantasised idly about powerful magic beyond his reach. His words here seemed far too eloquent for a twelve year old and it was likely he was quoting something he had read. “-and of course, the power to turn other people into whatever your heart desires.” He said coldly. It may have been a funny joke, but the boy’s expression seemed dire as the smile faded from his face. Perhaps a threat to anyone who might cross him?
When it came to being criticised for his inept wand movement, he started to blame everything and everyone but himself for his failure. “This is what the professor was doing.” He started and then quickly moved on to the next excuse. “The textbook is complete drivel and hard to understand.” Before finally settling on a classic. “My wand is defective at the moment.” Even though it was blatantly not true.

Theodore’s face scrunched up in confusion for a moment as he listened to her answer. Perhaps he could have been clearer. “No-No.” He started, interrupting her and then continuing. “I meant, are you from the Irish Republic or Northern Ireland?” He repeated, this time a little more concisely. He gave her an intense stare, but his expression softened after a pause. “It’s not that important, I’m just curious.” He said, giving her a smile. It was likely he did have ulterior motives for wanting to know, but he kept it to himself.
The boy continued to practise, but was not getting any results from his wand movement or incantation. He eventually slumped back in his chair, resigned to just waiting until the lesson was over. As Quinn spoke to him, he sat in relative silence, his expression neutral. That was until she suggested he wasn’t perfect, at which point he looked right at her and frowned. “What magic do you know then?” He asked. Criticism or failure was not common to him, especially at his previous muggle school where he had excelled academically. It was clear the muggle-born was having a challenging time adapting to this new environment.
He was especially lacking in the ‘making friends’ department, due to his snobbish and arrogant behaviour.

The boy absentmindedly scratched his face, pondering what he knew about Dublin. Recalling his mother's advice about speaking only if he had something nice to say, he opted for a simple nod when Quinn praised the city's beauty. His mind drifted to a song, 'Dirty Old Town,' by a muggle band called the Pogues, often associated with Dublin. Lost in his thoughts, he almost tuned out Quinn's words entirely. Suddenly, a realisation jolted him back to the conversation. Wait, did she just insult me?
He sighed but opted not to respond to Quinn’s remark about his unfamiliarity with failure, assuming it was rhetorical.
Theo reclined in his chair, nonchalantly setting his wand on the desk before him, his gaze fixed on Quinn. "Well then, don't keep me waiting," he prompted, a hint of eagerness underlying his words. "What's the most intricate spell up your sleeve? I'm positively itching to witness it." His grin, though small, held a touch of scepticism, as if he were challenging her to exceed his expectations. Was it mere boredom that drove him to seek entertainment, or a genuine curiosity to witness her prowess? Arms folded across his chest, he awaited her demonstration with a mix of anticipation and scepticism.
With the frown now vanishing from his face, he had effectively shifted his focus away from his own failures, directing all his attention to assessing Quinn's skill with a wand.
In the bustling background, the professor busied themselves assisting other students in mastering the day's practical exercises. A few minutes lingered before the next phase of the class would commence, providing a brief window for Quinn to showcase her magical finesse.

Theodore had not expected Quinn to be so brazen as to jinx him while in class. A look of surprise crossed his face as the girl pointed a wand at him and the boy's hands shot out in front of him as if in surrender. “Wait-” He blurted out, but it was too late. The spell had been cast and Theo found himself sprung out of his seat, his legs moving involuntarily as they jerked around in an uncoordinated dance.
It took all Theo’s willpower not to shout for a professor and get Quinn into trouble. The only thing stopping him was the shame of being a tattletale and the notion that he couldn’t look out for himself. His second instinct was to try and grab his wand, which was a struggle given that it was back on his desk out of reach.
Finally, his last resort was pleading with Quinn. “Okay- Okay! You’ve made your point!” He said, seething frustratedly. As soon as the jinx subsided, he took his wand close to him and sat down, peering over at her with a scowling frown. “You are lucky, I am in a forgiving mood. Quinn from Dublin.” With that he snapped his textbook shut and folded his arms on it, content to wait for the lesson to end.
