Kaitlyn enjoyed talking with Seraphina. While she was normally shy and quiet, she was enjoying opening up to her Hufflepuff friend. ‘This is nice. I’m happy to call Seraphina a friend, she’s fun to be around,’ she thought with a smile. In her sketchbook, she continued to draw the landscape in front of them, of the sun setting. While her picture would not be in color, it would still look lovely. She would have to remember to shade it, due to the lack of color.

At Seraphina’s words, Kaitlyn looked up and flushed. “No … There have been a few I’d like to deck, but I haven’t fought with anyone yet,” she shook her head. “But, if I ever feel like beating someone up, I’ll invite you before I start,” she giggled. “But, thank you for offering. I have no doubt in my mind that you’d do a good job beating someone up, if needed,” she smiled to her friend. "Is everyone treating your alright? If you need my help with anything, I'm willing to provide my assistance," she smiled to Seraphina. 'I love how she is willing to fight someone to help me, that is real dedication right there. I'm glad we're friends,' she thought.

Seraphina felt happy. She could feel Kaitlyn relaxing and enjoying herself better than when she arrived. She talked more and decidedly less nervous than when she arrived. And in Seraphina's books that was a win.
"No, I don't know enough people to fight them... But it's ok! I'm tiny, so I'd rather not fight if I can help it. I'm very skilled at biting my enemies, though!" She joked. "Seriously now, you can count on me if you have trouble. I may not be much of a help but I'll do my best. What is your favourite subject and less favourite so far? I think I like charms best and certainly would enjoy potions if I could keep my uniform stainfree for more than thirty seconds. I'm dying to get on a broom. And I don't like so much defense against the dark arts... Mainly because I don't want to imagine fighting any dark wizard or any evil creature... Not that I think any creature can by evil." Seraphina blushed. She had started rambling again... She tended to do that and she hated it. The only possible way it was acceptable was if the people she talked with rambled in return... And she didn't thought Kaitlyn would. She was too polite for that.

Kaitlyn giggled and nodded to Seraphina’s words. “How about we help each other if we need it. I may be shy, but I am reliable,” she suggested. ‘I don’t know why I feel so comfortable around Seraphina already. I have plenty of nervous energy. When I met her on that train platform, I never would have guessed this. I am happy, though,’ she thought.

At Seraphina’s ramble, Kaitlyn smiled politely and let her friend finish. She enjoyed active listening. For the few friends she had at Hogwarts so far, they seemed to enjoy it when she actively listened. ‘I hope no one ignores Seraphina. She’s too nice and sweet for that,’ she thought.

Once Seraphina finished in a blush, Kaitlyn waited two beats before responding. “Ok, before I respond to all that, May I say … you don’t need to feel embarrassed around me when you ramble. I’m the same way. I blush and apologize for wasting the person’s time. I’m enjoying talking to you like this. I’d like us to be comfortable around each other,” she replied, sincerely.

“Here goes. I completely believe in you Seraphina. You can count on me, too. I love Herbology and Potions. I feel like if you leave Potions without some kind of stain, are you even doing it correctly? I’m excited and scared to fly a broom. I’ve never been up in the air before. I’m not fond of Transfiguration. I get that some of the transformations are cool, but I’m going to feel squeamish when we have to cast the spells on animals. What if they can feel it? And what if I mess up? Do they feel it then? I don’t know, it makes me worried. Oh, and I also don’t think a creature could be evil. Dangerous, yes. But, not evil,” she finished her ramble and gave Seraphina a bright smile.

"I feel the same way about transfiguration!!" Seraphina exclaimed excitedly. "I think it's the coolest, don't get me wrong, and one day I hope to be an animagus, but turning animals into things feels wrong." It was a relief to be able to put all her thoughts into words this way. She had been to fearful to offend anyone or embarrass herself with the other students. She hasn't heard anyone talk about that kind of things, and most of the people she had follow around (wizard-borns) didn't seem to mind much about it. They simply accepted those things as easily as they did the ghosts around the castle.
"Have you messed up big time in some class already? My mother says I will not be a proper Hogwarts student until I make a big fool of myself at least once. She says it's the way you know you're doing your best at something. But I'm so scared of messing things up. And I don't think there's a class where you can do something really awful without injuring yourself or someone else. What if I blow up my cauldron or hex someone by accident?" She was so fearful she was double or triple checking every step through every class. She was really slow while working on something, but for the moment nothing has been set on fire. That was a slight relief.

Kaitlyn smiled brightly at Seraphina’s statements. ‘It feels nice to have someone that agrees with me. I sometimes feel left out, when all of my magical friends seem unbothered by these occurances, and yet, here I am, lost in space’ she thought. “An animagus sounds sooo cool,” she agreed. “But, yes, I get so scared that I’ll hurt the animal … I don’t know if I have it in me to try … and yet, I also don’t want to fail,” she admitted, her eyes downcast.

Kaitlyn could not help but to giggle at Seraphina’s question and easily shook her head. “No, I have not thought of that yet … May I just say, honestly, I don’t think I’d do that willingly, at least. I mean, I guess that is one way to look at it …” she trailed off. Her cheeks flushed lightly and she looked down at the floor. It didn’t last long, and she looked back up at her friend. “Would you like help? I’ll know what you’re doing, so, it won’t come as a surprise for me … and we can think of a way for us to mess up. I’d think a spell would be easier …”

“Potions would be kind of hard to mess up and not make extra problems … I read the syllabus for that class. One of the potions we’ll learn is Cure for Boils … I’d rather not have anything like that touch me … Maybe we trip and fall into some plants? Or a spell. Those sound easiest, and have the potential to not be dangerous to either of us,” she replied.

Seraphina laughed. "I've explained myself wrong! I don't think we're supposed to mess on purpose. Though it certainly sounds funny to do it with you. More like it's something bound to happen sooner or later and we shouldn't feel too bad about it when it does. At least I suppose that's what my mom was trying to say. But now it really sounds like fun discover what may happen."
Seraphina supposed she sounded a bit like a mad woman, talking about failing on purpose. She often got too excited talking and gave wrong messages. But now she couldn't help but wonder what would happen if she made a bit of mischief with Kaitlyn. Nothing really big, she didn't want to loose any house points or bad grades. But maybe letting loose a chocolate frog in class and see what would happen... Or maybe they could figure out together how to deliver the transfiguration bees from their grim fate of becoming buttons. That would be awesome!
Now that she thought about it... She was sure she had some class with Slytherin -all of her classes were with one other house- bit she had been so focused in her tasks that she hadn't even noticed. No wonder she hadn't make a lot of friends yet... She had been too focused in studies since she entered the school. Spending all her time either studying or researching the magical community. Surely that was why that evening was turning out to be such a treat. She has to start balancing a bit better her time or she would go crazy by mid-term.

Kaitlyn laughed with Seraphina. “That does make more sense,” she giggled in agreement. She turned her gaze to Seraphina. “Hey, I know we share a few classes together … and I’d hate to cause you to not make more friends here, but would you like to partner with me when we have group work to do? In some of them at least?” She asked, optimistically.

In the few classes they had recently, Kaitlyn was scoring pretty well. She’d love to score all outstanding in everything. But, she was still happy to receive exceeds expectations, currently. When she first set foot at Hogwarts, one of her biggest fears was failing her classes. With that not happening, it felt kind of exciting for her.

With a lull in their conversation, Kaitlyn returned her focus to her drawing of the grounds. Being an introvert, she liked the quiet. ‘I wonder if Seraphina is the same as me, enjoying the quiet? Then again, I’ve never been that good of a conversation parter,’ she thought. She lifted her eyes to look back over at Seraphina. “Hey, if you don’t mind me asking, but have you found a spot here at Hogwarts that you like to use to hide away from everyone else? I get it if you don’t want to share. Mine’s the library, probably no real surprise there. I love this table near the back of the library. It’s partially hidden by bookshelves. Every time I’ve been to the library, it has never been full. I like to go there to do my work, draw, read, or decompress from all the talking I’ve attempted to do,” she admitted.

When Kaitlyn proposed to partner up in some classes Seraphina got really excited. "That would be great! Yeah! Thanks you! I mean... Of course" "Ok, don't mess it up. Don't get over excited! You may be making a friend... Don't be weird about it!" Seraphina though trying to control her features into a not-so-big a smile. She felt a bit lonely since she got to Hogwarts and even talking with anyone felt like a big thing. Not to say getting a friend that actually wanted to hang with her in classes! "I have to warn you though. Even if I try my best and study hard I have not the slightly idea of magic. I am every bit as clueless as I was the day of the train.
As for hiding spots... I've don't really ventured much on my own. I've kept to my common room and the library too. I know the table you speak of, but I've never been there. Or I don't think so. I often sit by the windows. But there's a spot I like in the grounds. In the lake, near the first trees of the forest. Is no-where really, but is very peaceful. And sometimes you get to see some of the giant squid!" Seraphina tried to locate her little spot of grass in her own drawing and then marked an X of vibrant red on it. "There!"

Kaitlyn smiled wide at Seraphina’s acceptance and nodded. “Thank you. I’d like to hang out with you, more, too. I like being with you like this, and how we have similar feelings about the coursework here at Hogwarts,” she responded. She smiled sympathetically at Seraphina’s words. “Trust me, I’m clueless, too. The only good thing I’m at is reading and writing essays. Most of the practical classes where we cast spells, I’m rubbish at,” she giggled. “But, maybe, between the two of us, we can get something right?” She asked, optimistically.

“Oh, nice. I like the window seats, too,” Kaitlyn agreed. She smiled, as Seraphina pointed out a spot near the lake, but before the Forbidden Forest, and Kaitlyn nodded in understanding. “That sounds like a lovely spot. I like any view of the lake, it is so mesmerizing an beautiful. I also saw a nice area …” she trailed off, as her eyes scanned Seraphina’s drawing, before pointing at a cluster of trees off the path on the grounds. “I like this area. The trees form a canopy and I’ve climbed up to it. The view is nice, and you’re partially hidden from onlookers,” she explained with a smile.

Do you like to climb trees? I used to love it! Seraphina said. "But then it all changed" she thought. Her whole body shrinking at the thought and her voice lowering to a whisper. "I was climbing a tree when my magic acted out the first time"
She thought of that moment often, even if she knew there was nothing she could change about it. But it was the beginning of everything that happened next and the reason she was in Hogwarts instead of her local middle school.
"I'm sorry." She said once she realized she had really changed the mood of the room. It wasn't Kaitlyn's fault that she didn't trust her magic. Surely she would grow used to it in the castle. She had used it somehow with her wand at charms. Like really used it with intention, doing something she had truly intended to do by lifting that big feather in the air...
But it still scared her. It was something she had never wanted and none of the people she knew (until a week ago) had. She knew her parents were worried about it too, even if they always tried to make it sound like something positive. Silence had fallen upon them in a weighted way now, and Seraphina started to feel itchy.
"May I ask how you discovered you were a witch?"
