It was a slightly warmer day than most February days. The air wasn't as brisk, and the wind wasn't as sharp, and that gave Rose some hope for spring. She preferred the mildness of spring over the ruthless cold of winter.

Rose was sitting in the lowest branch of a tree, and her chin rested on her paws. Her thick calico coat kept her warm against the slight chill in the air. She could see so much from up here. A pair walked across the grounds, bundled up, and a trio of what looked like first-years was running around. Her green eyes flicked around, observing the grounds. Everything looked slightly different in terms of colors, since cats couldn't see all the colors humans did, but she also felt like she could hear and see so much more.

The redhead was becoming more and more accustomed to spending some time as a cat. It was oddly calming, because other than the professor that had helped and mentored her through the process, nobody really knew who she was in her feline form. She had no obligation to talk to anybody. And some people definitely would have judged her for struggling to climb a tree in her human form. It had been so easy as a cat, to just clamber up the trunk. She wasn't trying to keep it a secret, necessarily, but she didn't really see why everybody needed to know, either.

She knew one day, being an animagus would just be a natural part of her life, but as it was such a new development for her, she was enjoying learning how to be a cat.

Then, something occurred to her. She didn't know how to get down.

How ironic- it was a stereotype of cats to get stuck in trees, and here she was. She supposed she could just jump down, but the ground seemed so far away, especially in her feline form. She could shift back into her human form to get down, but she didn't know if that would solve the problem, or if she would bang her head on the branch above her or slip off the branch entirely.

She gripped the branch with her claws, and peered over the edge. Was it really that far down, or did it just seem that far down because she was so small as a cat?

There was nothing quite like the first warm days of the season. Despite snow clinging to the fringes of the grounds, the sun shone brightly against a clear sky, soaking all it touched in a welcome heat. More than one animal was taking advantage of the break in icy weather: as the cat basked, an eagle soared overhead. He savored the sunlight against his wings while watching his shadow race beneath him. As much as Pericles had distanced himself from social circles over the past year, he still liked keeping an eye on things from a distance, especially now that he had a literal bird's-eye view. Like Rose, he enjoyed the privacy of his animal guise. He felt blissfully apart from the going-ons far below: students racing from one place to the next, bickering, chattering, engaging in slushy snowball fights. When he'd had his fill of taking in the sights, the bird coasted down to land on the upper branches of a tree, only to quickly realize he wasn't its only occupant.

With a tilt of its head, the white-bellied sea-eagle took in the long-haired calico, observing the way it eyed the ground at the edge of its branch. He could tell it was trying to calculate the leap, and he wasn't about to wait for it to hurt itself. With a flutter of feathers, the bird coasted to the ground before becoming a wizard, trading gray wings for a gray coat while white head feathers became instead a head of snowy hair. The wizard dusted himself off before turning to the tree and lifting his head. Pericles didn't often go out of his way to talk to strangers. He did go out of his way to interact with cats, whenever he possibly could, and was about to treat this fellow animagus the same way he did any other stray feline.

"Oh, poor thing!" He was baby-talking her, hands outstretched, arms raised high in an attempt at encouraging the cat to jump into them. "Come here, darling. It's alright. Pspsps...."

As the calico cat heard a small rustle of branches, she looked up over her shoulder. It was a white bird with gray wings, and it was fairly big, too. She had never seen a bird like that on the Hogwarts grounds before. She watched it for a second before looking back towards the ground. If she was going to find a way to get back onto the ground safely, she had to focus.

Maybe she could jump off and then turn into a human? No, what good would that do? Maybe she should just jump. Rose clung to the branch and tried to gather her courage. Cats always landed on their feet- everybody knew that. And she had her wand with her in her human form, so she could heal herself if she got a cut or a bruise.

Then, the bird left the branch above her head and flew to the ground below her. Rose's whiskers twitched in annoyance. Was it mocking her? Obviously, she couldn't just grow wings and fly to the ground like this bird had, though that would be helpful in this situation.

Okay. Just jump. Just-

And then, the bird turned into a boy.

Rose meowed in surprise at the sudden transformation, her fur stood up for a second and her tail straightened. She had not been expecting that. The bird was an animagus, and even stranger, someone she recognized- he was in her year. She was pretty sure his name was Pericles. They had never really had a conversation, but she knew who he was- he was hard to miss. Everything about him was silver and snow. She was sure his friends didn't have a hard time finding him in crowds.

Rose sat down on her haunches and processed this for a moment. She hadn't known that he was an animagus, like her, but knowing that he was brought her a new respect for him. She knew how hard the process was, since she went through it herself, and anybody who took the time, energy, and work to complete the process was admirable in her eyes.

He reached up to her, and he clearly felt bad for her in her situation. He started to baby-talk her, and though Rose definitely would mind in her human form, she didn't really as a cat. She probably would have done the same thing, if she was being honest. Maybe that just meant she was really cute in her cat form.

This was probably a better solution than jumping all the way down to the ground- that is, if he caught her. Rose let her claws come out of the branch, and reached a dainty white paw down towards him. It was a short jump, but too far to just climb down into his hands. Rose put all four paws on the branch, steeled her courage, and jumped down.
