Hellfire and brimstone hurt more than Ulysses could've imagined. The eldest Drake had never been casted at before and he now laid in an unconscious state vulnerable with his underside exposed for someone to easily go for the fatal blow. His skin seared from the licks of flames against his body as a reminder that despite the kinship with dragons, Ulysses was a mere mortal with skin burnt to a crisp and without a lick of a spell that he could've cast in that moment. How embarrassing — a pureblood whose anger bubbled to the neanderthal ways of fists for fury. The brute force of his hands against that lion cub's face felt so exhilarating ; watching as a smirk of victory turned so quickly into a look of fear. Uly always knew he had the capabilities for violence, but he never guessed he would've felt drunk with power until it was all taken away.

The boy woke up in the hospital bed wrapped in a salve meant to heal the various burns along his whole body along with a blanket wrapping most of his body up. Blinking his eyes, Ulysses tried to focus his vision on one of the many blurry pieces within the room before he groaned out in annoyance and embarrassment.

" I'm - " With a voice hoarse and filled with a heavy wheeze, Uly cleared his throat and felt the burn of smoke against his vocal cords. The first year decided to power through the pain anyway, despite how his whole body still felt as though it had been on fire — perhaps a simple phantom pain as he quickly darted his eyes around for reassurance. " I promise i'm fine. Finn's a punk bitch, anyway. Arsehole. " If anything, Ulysses wanted to get back out there and grip the muggle and slide his face against the mud. However, Ulysses might've been a shite student but he knew better than to get himself back in a place where he was going to get outgunned by magic.

He hated this; Uly still wasn't doing well in any of his classes. But, perhaps his desire to destroy a lion and his reputation could be just the push he needed to be able to focus. The asp would use this time to rest, despite already knowing that the thought of flames and being set on fire had now taken residence in his mind. The thought already started him worrying in a way that he could hear his heartbeat in his ears. Ulysses took a deep breath, calming himself as he offered a weak smile and hoped he could get out of here without any embarrassing visits from anyone, losing was embarrassment enough.

The boy had a self to recover; to shed the molted skin and ready his venom for a determined preemptive strike.

Dennis was on his way to the Ravenclaw v Gryffindor race. He had such a hard time deciding who he would root for. He was running late but of course he could still catch the action. On the one hand, there was Ravenclaw. He would be a poor Eagle if he didn’t show house fealty but at the same time Ying was racing for Gryffindor. He would have to split his time evenly between a whole house team and one solo racer. That was the only logical conclusion.

However, his plan was cut short. He was still a ways away from the spectators area for the race when he heard some people talking about a duel between a Slytherin and a Gryffindor. He stopped to ask what they were talking about and even though he didn’t recognize the Lion he knew the moment the ‘U’ formed in the group’s mouth the this friend was in danger. He drew his wand and went racing toward the spectator stands as fast as he could. One of the people in the group called after him saying that Ulysses had already been taken to the Hospital Wing.

Dennis stopped in his tracks. What was his friend thinking getting into a duel when Dennis wasn’t even sure Ulysses could even cast? The Ravenclaw, without another thought, turned around and made his way to the Hospital Wing.

He found Ulysses first by his singed smell before he actually saw him. He made his way over and the Ravenclaw sat on one of the bedside chairs. More of a flop, his wavy red hair falling over his face. He puffed to blow the strands out of the way and looked his friend over. “Tell you didn’t try to brew potions without me. This is what happens.” He said trying to open up with a joke, knowing full well that even if Dennis had been there the results would not have changed. “Looks like you went to a bbq and you were the one cooked.” Hoping that a little levity would help pull his friend out of what looked like a thirst for vengeance on his face.

𝔄very's coat was a double-breasted woolen overcoat, enriched with a deep charcoal and navy hued cashmere blend. It was a classic, a timeless pieces with enough fabric and weight for it to frame him perfectly and drape elegantly about him. Its thread and cuts were subtly made to accentuate the wearer's stature, and each of its buttons were what seemed to be made of polished horn to further add to the image. Within the coats folds, a deep burgundy silk-satin was akin to a comforting hug, fit with a sensible number of pockets one might need. All of this, was to say that it was clearly a coat that had come from a place where money typically wasn't an issue; expensive.

He didn't know what kind of condition he'd find it, nor why he embodied the vision of charity in using it to cover Ulysses following his fight with Finn in the quidditch stands. It was too late to regret it retrospectively, what good would that do? Avery was resourceful, and he would play with the cards dealt to him in most instances; and here he saw opportunity.

Not literally, of course. Here, a few feet from the bed-post, he could see a disgusting display. Thick salve had been lathered all over the poor fellow, making him look like a giant Mr Whippy ice cream, and that really wasn't befitting a pureblood, not least one that punched Finnegan Connor like that. Avery did not wear his token smirk, instead a sympathetic look as he crossed his arms over his chest; eyes darting from his skin-grafted coat to Ulysses.

“Quite right, a punk bitch.” He agreed, smiling then. “Socked him good though. Bet he'll have a broken nose." Avery was certainly pleased by this and if Uly didn't already pick up from his part in the entanglement, Avery clearly had an issue with Finn.

Avery withdrew then, uncrossing his arms and moving around the bed to the chair where his coat had been strewn carelessly. Of course, it was not as important to a burning child-- to them. Ulysses would heal from his injuries, but his pride would not. No matter the length of time, Avery knew that this embarassment would live with him; for he felt it too. He let those thoughts play out in the silence that existed as he inspected his burnt-skin smelling coat before he finally decided to test Ulysses; to figure out if the boy was a notable; a shark, a spider, someone like him.

“But that's not enough, is it? It's not right for someone like him to have shown you up like that. -- But what are you going to do about it? He asked then, returning his gaze to Ulysses after folding the coat over his arm. It was a harmless question, but Ulysses' answer was something Avery was very-much interested in.

Through blurred vision, it wasn’t until the other person in the room spoke with a voice dipped in honey as though a snake charmer provoking Ulysses to strike that he realized it was Avery Leveret. The two hadn’t been incredibly close, their families ran in similar circles but Uly hadn’t forgotten that he was in the audience when Finn had decided to escalate a jesting taunt into something far more sinister than he was expecting. A stolen glance from June Selwyn to an annoying Gryffindor and he was getting lit to flames for the sake of the Broom Racing team. In fact, Ulysses hadn’t even been certain how he had made it to the Hospital Wing but deep shame was the first emotion that radiated from the young first year’s core. Like a pebble in the middle of a deep sea, Uly’s inadequacies made themselves known as a Pureblood who simply couldn’t get himself to understand magic like a proper wizard. His mind whirred to the howler he was sure to expect, his mother’s rage on embarrassing the family would be a bitter pill to swallow.

But under the surface, rage festered like the deep burns that scattered across his entire body. The first year knew that he wasn’t ready to take on someone like Finn with his current abilities and though like a snake unfurling itself, the piece of Ulysses that felt the fluttering of ambition and cunning emerged with a pointed look towards Avery. Through the salve, the wounds, and the embarrassment, Ulysses would hold tight to this feeling of conspiring for revenge against Finnegan Connor.

" He's going to learn what it means to mess with me. " The words were incredibly matter-of-fact, a declaration to teach Finn that he would regret this little teenage brawl and deciding that Ulysses was the one to let it out on. He hadn't even needed it to be immediately, the best revenge was calculated and unexpected. " It might not be this year, but i'm going to figure out the best way to pin down the kid and teach him a valuable lesson. " It was decided and it was now declared.

The blurry vision of the second year had finally began to regain focus as he took a look at Avery, expensive coat in hand and a gaze that seemed as though they were kindred spirits in what they desired and demand of the fates.

" I didn't think you had any issue with him. Why's that? " It would only be fair that if they were beginning to build the road to revenge and redemption together that it was on equal footing. Avery was a formidable student and wizard; the pride and joy of any pureblood family and surely the type of son his own mother wished for. But, perhaps, proximity would be enough for Ulysses to be able to create enough of a facade to get his mom off of his back.

Ulysses wasn't naturally refined as the others; the boy was pure, unbridled energy ready to leave an impression to whatever had the privilege of being in his path and with Avery's aim, they would surely be a lethal duo.

𝕾hark, it is.

At summons, a black-hearted smirk told all. Ulysses had correctly deferred to Avery's aim and vision, and Avery; for better or for worse; liked this. Ulysses was a side of a similar coin, that was sure.

Already, Avery could see that perhaps Ulysses's coin was less polished; a bit roughed up- certainly in appearance right now, perhaps a scratch or two around. In that moment he acknowledged that there was a use in associating with people not as refined as he would like; which meant that there was value in their association. As such, he quickly dismissed any concerns he would have sharing his personal grievances with @Finnegan Connor, with the burnt crisp that lay on the bed a few feet from him.

"Well it's only fair you know..." Avery said, banking that Ulysses would think the same; a small gesture to align them further. "The little blighter who happened upon magic through luck and not blood, thinks he can get away with body-bind cursing me in front of my class." He spoke that with little anger in his voice, but that made it all the more personal. Avery seemed to be the kind of lad that would hold on to grudges, and nurture them until they grew heads of their own. In the next moment, he dismissed any worries about his bubbling rage and gave a honeyed follow-up.

"As much as I want to join you in pinning him down and beating him until he turns the colour of my coat--", Avery gestured to the dark navy coat folded over his arm; something reminiscent of an awful bruise, "-- we are wizards, pureblooded ones at that. Regrettably, we have our reputations to think of, and he knows the way around a wand so." He shrugged, though his smile was practically begging to let out his next sentence.

"Thankfully, there are ways and means if you're bold enough. - I have the ways of sending a chilling message, but I just need the means." He paused, looking at Ulysses then to see if there was a fire in his eye; a key component of their future.

"I need a few measures of wormwood essence, three valerian roots, and powdered root of asphodel." Avery parotted from his deal with the devil, almost exactly. "I am working on other parts of the plan, with my cousin too. Perhaps you could both be resourceful enough. Exert influence on your classmates; trick your foes into doing it for you; whatever. I am sure you would both excel. - You would make a mighty fine team." He smirked then, allowing that thought to settle in Uly's mind.

"Think on it, but let me know soon. - Opportunities like the one I have, do not come without work and the pressure of time." Avery added, keen that the year was drawing on and he had still not made due on the bargain he struck. Before long, he wouldn't be able to count on it being possible, for that was the nature of restricted knowledge; locked behind aged wisdom, promised a tomorrow-land greener pastures.
