The smoke was too much, blinding in its intensity. It suffocated and choked her, her lungs hacking up black puffs that made her think she had been a chain smoker in another life. Good god this is why people shouldn't smoke. Her eyes had watered the entire time, silent tears streaming down her face like rivers that couldn't provide life. No matter how hard she blinked. The water was unforgiving. All it did was blind her even more. Perhaps that was why she struggled this round.

Swearing to herself just a little, Beatrice grasped her wand a little tighter, not wanting to fumble and lose it in the thick smog. She'd have to cast eventually. One last hack and then she stood tall, her eyes still smarting from being suffocated by smoke. Alan was playing with them, she was sure. Eventually she'd hit him. His head wouldn't be able to hide. Casting out rather blindly, she let wand cast her favourite spell. Fire! After it was sent, she waited and listened but didn't hear any screams of pain. She must have missed, which was annoying to say the least.

After all was said and done, Bea sniffled, wiping her runny nose and streaming eyes on her sleeves. There was the light! Bright and clear like the morning sun. And so too was Alan, unscathed and unburnt by her fire. He was going down!

𝓝ew to the duelling scene as she was, Bex had caught on to one harsh reality of the sport fairly quickly: much like Quidditch and Racing, duellists getting injured and even falling unconscious was simply a part of the game. One of the most important functions of a duel's moderator was to ensure that, when a duellist does go down, someone is there to stop the fight, ensuring that the injured party is escorted to the hospital wing safely.

Typically this happens during a round or at the end of it, rather than before the round has even begun. Just as Bex was about to call out for the combatants to continue, Maverick raises a hand and signals to her to stop the match. Whether it was the stress of the duel, an illness going around that he was unlucky enough to catch, or an unfortunate meal of sugar free gummy bears before the match, the end result was the same. Maverick was feeling too unwell to continue to match, and made his way off of the piste.

This left only three underclassmen remaining to challenge Alan. The odds had been proper grim before, and were certifiably abysmal now. She grinned at the duellists and gave them a thumbs up, and on her count of three, the round began.

Almost as soon as the words were out of her mouth, Alan had quickly thrown up a spell that Bex had never seen before, creating a shimmering shield in front of him. None to soon, too, as all three young women sent spells his way in rapid succession. Both Beatrice's Expelliarmus and Raizel's Incendio Duo, while well cast, immedietly fizzled out on impact when they made contact with Alan's Protego.

Something far different and far sillier occurred though, after Alyssea had cast Spongify at Alan. Her spell pinged right off of the older duellist's shield, rebounding violently away from it and right back at Alyssea. Instead of hitting her, though, it flew right past her, narrowly missing her cheek, and careening towards a Fates-cursed Raizel, who happened to be standing behind her. As if it was nothing to her, though, Raizel merely stepped to the side, out of the path of the spell, and it crashed harmlessly onto the floor of the piste.

Bex stood silently for a moment, processing everything that had just occurred. "Okay. Well that, uh. Certainly was a round. If anybody else has fallen ill, please say so now. I'm very busy."

Freezing up on the piste and in front of danger. Not exactly an uncommon sight for Raizel. It happens, maybe not to her, but she had seen it. Basing it on experience, she won’t be surprised if Maverick only stood there being a free target for Alan but to her surprise, he actually excused himself and it did get her a bit worried for his well-being. She watched him as he got off the piste and made his way out of the duelling.

That gave her some time to think of the next spell that she could shoot at Alan, brown eyes glancing back towards the 7th year who they haven’t hit at all. There is an obvious skill gap between them and him. Despite facing off against like 4 students at the same time, he is still making it look so easy for him. Alan sure is a skilled duellist. If she could just land a hit in, just one would be enough, it’ll make her so happy. Alas, that is just but a dream and for it to come true, will require a huge amount of luck, something that she lacks.

The duel resumed once the Ravenclaw girl signaled for them to go and immediately, she fired her own spell along with her teammates. Both hers and Bea’s dissipated upon contact with what looks like to be the shield charm. Oh how nice it looks, much more when she gets her hands on it once it is close to her skill level.

Alyssea’s spell didn’t suffer the same fate as theirs nor did it hit Alan but rather, the Hufflepuff missed, maybe a misstep or whatever misfortune had befallen her. Or rather, Raizel’s misfortune. Again, it’s not something that she has a ton off so guess it wasn’t that surprising when the spell went for her instead. She was quick to avoid it, sidestepping before giving Alyssea a thumbs up and a grin. That was probably the second time the Hufflepuff accidentally targeted her with a spell, with the first being a Flipendo during her first duel.

“I can still keep going for me.” Raizel said to the Ravenclaw girl, her focus returning back to the untouchable 7th year.

Alyssea could only laugh in pure pain and insanity as she watched the next round go down. Of course, she had to cycle through the six stages of grief within a minute before then as Maverick left the piste. Before you asked, yes, there were six stages. Everyone forgot that after acceptance is moving on. Like, what are else are you supposed to do after accepting the grief?

Out of ideas, she pulled her usual spell out of the hat. The wand movement was practically muscle memory to her now with how many times she'd used it in duels. What she didn't count, however, was what came next.

Alan threw up a very cool silver shield (Alyssea wanted that spell really bad; what year do you learn it?) which caused Raizel and Beatrice's spells to crumble into nothing upon impact. Her spell, however, decided to absolutely humiliate her as it ricocheted right off the shield and redirected towards Raizel. Her life flashed before her eyes as she relived that moment when one of her spells aimed at Zach went flying to Raizel instead. Déjà vu. Good thing Raizel dodged it.

Alyssea's luck was just really bad. She only hoped it would get better or she just might quit duelling before the year ended. Not a great way to end the year with a broken promise to one of her captains.

Alan glanced as one of the kids that he was duelling with had decided to step back from it due to feeling unwell, so Alan was quite aware that their already slim chances had been upgraded to impossible to win for them. Though he was still determined to make this a fun experience for all of them, it was practice after all. So at the very least he could help them become better duellists, practice their aim and if they had interest in duelling - which he knew all three of them did - improve their skills so they could further make their houses proud.

Alan, while loyal to his house mate, was not a fan of blind loyalty and gatekeeping friendships and opportunities, so he felt very much inclined to make this a hopefully enjoyable teaching moment. "Protego is something to be expected, even in a practice duel, especially if your opponent knows that you are planning to attack," he allowed some advice to carefully spill over to them as he got ready for the next round of spells. He knew he should be doing something more enjoyable this time. He had after all taught them now, that focusing all people on one person was perhaps not the wisest of decisions.

What were they to do? Just sit and wait for Alan to pick them off one by one? It wasn't hard as Maverick left the piste, leaving the three of them to fend for themselves. Alan's words coaxed a scathing scoff from her lips, a faint sneer turning them downwards. "That's correct Vanes. But the only option when there is one opponent." She wouldn't admit to to Alan that there were quite a few alternatives than to just blindly attacking again and again. Her impatience and competitiveness once again, was getting the best of her.

Alan had the upper hand. Could sit there all day behind his little shield and throw a spell or two their way. Any number of the upper year spells could wipe them out in a couple of blows. She'd seen it for herself with the first stage of duelling last month. Eun-ji gone within a single round from multiple hits.

She'd cast that Expelliarmus perfectly, enunciation and wand movement just right. And it was for nothing as the Protego spell swallowed it up like a Snorlax munching on berries. She shook her head. Alan wouldn't get that reference. Many of the students wouldn't here. But it amused the red-head just the same. Maybe Alan would just suddenly stop and take a nap? Enough for them to a get a hit or two in?

𝓘t seemed that the underclassmen had come into this round with a fairly decent strategy, all things considered. It's a shame, of course, that it didn't work at all, but we can't have everything on this Earth. Beatrice's spell was successful, which was neat, but didn't really do much of anything. Bex's fellow Ravenclaw cast a lovely Lubricus which, as the name implied, briefly made the piste surrounding Alan exceptionally slippery. A pity, then, that the older boy simply stood still in the middle of it and didn't put Beatrice's perfectly good spell to use. Bex wasn't sure what it looked like to slip on the Slippery Jinx, but she liked to imagine that it looked something like when you hit a banana peel with your car in Mario Kart, and she would very much like to see that, thank you.

"What if you did step in it, Alan? Like, as a treat. I'm not getting paid for this, you know."

Alas, being a duel moderator was apparently a thankless job where she didn't get to see anybody slip and fall on their butt even a little. Raizel's Lumos Maxima was more of a Lumos Invisibilis, which kind of defeated the whole point of a light spell, don't you think? Light only works if you can see it, traditionally. But Bex wasn't a duellist, so perhaps there was some other grand strategy at play here that she was blind to. Blind because it was so dark here.

Alyssea's Incendio Duo, while more successfully cast, was not, unfortunately, more successfully aimed. This one hurt Bex where she lived; she was growing rather fond of Incendio, because it was just so pretty. As such, she was more than a little disappointment that Alan was able to lean out of the way of it so easily. He didn't even have to step into the oil slick to do it! Everything was miserable here.

There was one shining light of joy for her this round, though: Alan's Ebublio went off without a hitch, trapping Alyssea in a lovely little bubble. Bex squinted her eyes, holding her hand up to hold off the next round as she surveyed if Alyssea was alright in there. You could breathe in a bubble, right? She was 30% certain of this.

"Alyssea? Can you hear me? Please rate the survivability of your current experience on a scale of 1 to 10."

Only once she had gotten a breathing report from Alyssea would she signal to continue the duel.

Alan Vanes, there was just something about him that kept distracting Raizel from her own spells and somehow found herself staring once more at the older student. The way he moves, he casts those spells, there is elegance and fierceness. Not to mention, it was a spell that she hadn't seen before. New spells always fascinates her and that, combined with the talented and amazing, Alan Vanes, just left dumbstruck.

Why, though? Why could such a scene garner so much of her attention? The fact that this might be the last time she'll be able to see it is probably a factor to it. After all, this is Alan's last year at Hogwarts. A talented duellist and wizard. Such a shame that there was no time to learn more from him, to see what else he could do. If this is gonna be the last, might as well cherish it right?

Well, maybe if she wasn't in a duel. “Ah!” Raizel snapped out of it. That was the second time that she got distracted but it's something that she can't help. She had always admired her seniors, especially the ones in duelling. Sometimes, she even wonders, will she be able to reach that level? Somehow, there is doubt. She could never, right? There was no way she could do amazing things like them. Looking back at her own duels, she is far from one might call… a real duellist. But enough of those thoughts, she needs to focus and try not to get distracted by the amazing performance of Alan Vanes.

People had different forms of coping mechanisms. Some would just sob until their tear ducts ran dry; others would go for a walk and reconnect with nature; a small few may begin plotting revenge. Now, Alyssea did not believe in revenge but rather a bag of apology gifts and maybe a gift card to try appease her enemy. Alyssea's coping mechanism was, however, laughing.

So laugh she did. Once all the spells fired, she felt herself disoriented with how her world shrunk significantly, now encased in a bubble of her approximate size. In her confusion, she stood there. Was the bubble also meant to make it hard for her to hear the outside world or was it just a placebo?

Eventually, she heard Rebecca's question and blinked herself back into reality. "Uh... Uhm... Well, this is not great." Alyssea tentatively poked at the bubble, surprised at the strength of the magical barrier. "I can still breathe? I'll put it as a six out of ten."

Alyssea's laugh quickly turned into a grumble as she realised they still hadn't hit Alan. How long had this been going on for? "I think I'm just going to... sit down. Yup. I'mma sit."

Maybe being a duellist just wasn't her style.

Alan gazed at his 'opponents', or rather his practice partners. He viewed this as an overall practice session rather than a friendly duel, after all these students were a lot younger and mostly inexperienced at least compared to his track record of duels. This was supposed to be his last year at this school and at this time it was a weird mix of just wanting it to be done and over with while also fearing the future. At the very least he had some good plans or something akin to that. He should possibly do more research on active Magizoologists in the UK aside from the ones he knew from magazines. Well and then he would have to ask to apprentice, to become a research assistant. But he could possibly manage to do this on his own too, right? Did he truly need someone else to show him the ropes? He was quite confident he knew exactly what to do! Perhaps he could ask the Care of Magical Creatures professor one day.... maybe they needed an assistant for research? It would be kind of odd to still be stuck around Hogwarts though, he yearned to explore!

Well any of that hardly mattered right now, his attention was meant to belong to the three students working hard to put a dent into him. He grinned as he raised his wand.
