Seraphina was furious! And afraid... Maybe more afraid than furious, really.
She understood her parents couldn't understand what was happening to her. She was suddenly a witch (or so had told her the professor Hogwarts has sent to speak with her and her family). She had magic! And that should have delighted her! She loved a good fantasy story! But it did not. It meant she was weird! And that she would have to spend the year away from her family and her friends. She didn't even know if Hogwarts had a theater club!
But in the end it has mattered very little that she and Victor (her twin brother) had tried to barricade themselves as protest. Their parents had made up their mind and to Hogwarts would she go.
And so, on September the first they all were on King's Cross station. A trolley charged with a chest with all things she has bought for this new school and some of her more precious possessions. Looking for a platform that should no exist and without any idea on how to find it.
They were all confused looking around until Marina, her four year old sister, pointed to something that sounded impossible. She claimed to have seen people disappear at an empty column. So all the Merryweathers stood there, looking like fools at said column when the impossible happened again. A whole family of robe-wearing, wizard-looking people disappeared after throwing themselves at said column.
And so, Seraphina kissed her family goodbye for the umpteenth time and decided to charge forward and simply follow someone around until she discovered what to do next.

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn stood at the train station between platforms 9 and 10, with just a brick wall between them. This platform 9 and three quarters seemed impossible. The Hogwarts letter in her hands, however, made it sound very possible. Her twin sister Abigail shared a dumbfounded look with her. It couldn’t be possible, right? Just throwing yourself at the wall? Then again, they also learned that they were witches. And plenty of weirdos in cloaks and robes threw themselves at the wall. They were magical, too, right?
As she stood with Abigail, Kaitlyn noticed another family standing nearby. ‘They look just as confused as us. Despite my shyness, I need to ask. We don’t want to be late for the train. That wouldn’t do,’ she thought. With a big sigh, she started to walk over to the young girl and boy, after their family left. “Hi,” she greeted them shyly. “I n-noticed y-you looking j-just as c-confused as us,” she gestured to her sister Abigail. She gave her twin sister a look, so she knew to come over to join them. She glanced down at her feet, her face flushed. ‘Should I even mention we’re witches? What if they aren’t? Ugh, I’m so confused,’ she thought.

Oh, boy, this was awkward! Now two girls were asking them for directions! But nothing in them indicated they were witches. The girl who had approached us first was wearing a pink top and sandals... No robes in sight. Damn, someone should have told her she was allowed to board the train with her everyday clothing.
What could they tell them? Other than "Oh, yes my best idea so far is to run into that brick wall!"
So I tried to answer them without looking like a raving lunatic.
"Well, yes. Hi! My name is Seraphina K Merryweather and this is my family. I have a ticket for a new school in platform nine and three quarters. I don't know where it is but I think I have seen people getting there by crossing that column over there."
Now they would certainly think I'm mental. Unless they were magic people too... But there was no way she was going to ask them that!
Maybe trying a different approach:
"Today I'm suppose to board the Hogwarts express to get to my new school...are you by any chance going there too?"
Please say yes, please say yes... It was so weird finally talking about it with someone other than her family.

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn stayed quiet, as Seraphina said her introduction and answered her question. Very active listening was needed for this. Platform 9 and 3 quarters seemed to be a dream. Not something grounded in reality. She glanced over at her sister, Abigail, who was watching their trolleys with their trunks, and extra small pieces of luggage. Hopefully what they brought would be enough for Hogwarts.
Once Seraphina finished, Kaitlyn waited two extra beats before responding. “Um … yes. H-hi Seraphina. M-my name is Kaitlyn Connor, a-and this is m-my twin s-sister, Abigail,” she gestured to her itendical twin. Abby waved her greeting. “I-it’s nice t-to meet you,” she responded. ‘I hope Seraphina doesn’t find me to be too weird for asking this. As much as I’d prefer to curl up in a ball and hide, we do need to keep in mind the time. Heaven forbid we’re late,’ she thought.
“W-we also h-have p-platform nine and three-quarters t-tickets,” Kaitlyn confirmed, removing two tickets from a pocket in her skirt. “An, y-yes, we’re g-going to Hogwarts, t-too,” she whispered, thinking they shouldn’t discuss magical things so freely. She wasn’t aware of the rules she’d have to follow. “I h-heard it’s t-through here,” she turned to the brick wall between platforms 9 and 10, feeling squeemish.
As she turned back to Seraphina, Kaitlyn’s blue eyes noticed another young girl nearby. “H-hi,” she greeted the other girl, shyly, giving an awkward wave.

"Your father went there?" That was incredible! That could only mean he was a full grown wizard!! Just imagine how much knowledge of everything this girl might had! "That's great! I mean... He knows what to do! He wouldn't tell you to run into a wall just for the laughs" Crap. She hadn't intended to say the last part... Now everybody would think she was weird. She was blushing hard too, she knew.
She quickly scurried away to her family for a last round of kisses and good-byes and to tell them she had discovered how to get to the platform.
It was so hard saying goodbye to them for a whole year. She had never been for so long without them. Heck! The longest she'd been without her family was at summer camp, and Victor was with her in those.
Then returned to the group of girls. "Ok, let's try it, then!"
She wanted to start running, but she felt glued to the floor. She could only see the perfectly solid wall in front of her and imagine how spectacular would be to find out she was not magical enough (and God knew she didn't feel very magical) by breaking her nose in front of everybody.

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn gave Ophelia a shy smile. “I-it’s nice t-to m-meet you, t-too, Ophelia,” she stammered. She looked over at Seraphina and nodded do her statement about Ophelia’s father. “I a-agree,” she replied, smiling shyly. She had hoped the rumor wasn’t true. That they weren’t supposed to blindly run into a brick wall. For all three of them to be told the same thing, she really hoped it was true. Otherwise, this was going to hurt.
With a sigh, Kaitlyn turned her blue eyes to the brick wall between platforms 9 and 10. “O-okay … Seraphina, Ophelia, w-wish me luck,” she said, giving the two girls an uncertain smile. Steeling herself, she went to retrieve her trolly from Abby. She then ran at the brick wall, pushing her trolley in the process. She closed her eyes, thinking she’d hit the wall. Instead it was a weird sensation … like being underwater. Suddenly, she heard hustle and bustle.
Opening her eyes, Kaitlyn saw Platform nine and three quarters and her eyes opened wide in shock. Abby followed after Kaitlyn and had the same wide-eyed expression. This was it. They were magical, and were about to head off to a magical school together.

Seraphina saw incredulously as the twins disappeared through the wall. It was impossible! It was amazing! And it would happen to her too, she supposed, if she tried to follow them. Or not. But she rather not think about it too much.
She made sure to grip her trolley with as much strength as possible and looked into Ophelia's eyes.
"See you on the other side!"
And she charged forward with all her might, eyes closed and a wild "aaaahh!" coming from her throat.
It felt like drowning and raising from warm water all at once. In a second. But when she opened her eyes she knew her whole world was to change forever.
She was in a huge train platform, in front of a very bright red and black train. Hundreds of people in robes walking by in every direction. She felt lost for a minute among all that greatness.
She let a sigh go once she could see most of the people actually wearing different versions of her same Hogwarts uniform. Sure, there was still weird and she much rather be in some of her old jeans, but at least she was not the sour thumb she thought she might be.
She quickly scanned the room for Kaitlyn and Abby, and went to their encounter.
Once she was by them she couldn't help herself anymore and made a little jump up and down. "This is wild!"

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn was momentarily speechless, as she took in the Hogwarts Express. Having not just been there, but after crossing that threshold, here it was. And a lot of people in pointy hats, cloaks, and funny clothes. But, there were other more recognizable things. Trunks, animals, luggage. It was unmistakenbly the train they were meant to take to Hogwarts. But, this whole experience blew her mind already. She felt a mix of anticipation and anxiety hit her in waves. ‘Goodness, I hope I can fit in … I hope I can do well,’ she thought. She ran a hand through her hair, nervously, hoping everything would be alright.
As she admired the train, Seraphina and Ophelia joined her on the train platform. She smiled at Seraphina’s reaction. Wild was one way to describe what they now saw. It was, simply magical. “I c-cannot wait!” She squealed. She smiled at the little jump Seraphina completed. “T-this is s-so exciting,” she giggled, turning to the other two girls. “Th-thanks for g-giving me the encouragement,” she smiled to both of them. She could feel her stuttering start to lessen a little. “I t-think we’re in f-for an ad-adventerous year a h-head of u-us,” she predicted with a giggle.

Ready? Seraphina wasn't sure that she was ready. She was scared "shirtless" by this whole experience. Sure, there has been a couple of years since she discovered she was a witch, but this (this!) was far too real.
And now she was going to board the huge train and pretend she understood something of what Hogwarts was all about. She was supposed to learn magic. Magic! She wasn't even sure it was her doing the funny stuff anyway! A few books flying when she was nervous wasn't any true indicator of something as great as magic. What if they had it all wrong and it was her twin the magical one? Or one of her little sisters?
What if she arrived at the castle and they have to send her back because she wasn't good enough. She liked school well enough, but she knew things like English and science. And there was no science enough in the world to explain what just has happened to her by crossing a brick wall.
But among all those insecure feelings she saw the faces of those three girls next to her and felt a little better. She wasn't alone.
-As ready as I'll ever be.
And so she climbed up the stairs to the great machine.

Thoughts: italicsKaitlyn turned to Ophelia and giggled at her question. Would she ever truthfully be ready? She wasn’t ready for her life to change completely overnight. She wasn’t ready to be within from her muggle boarding school, where she was in upper-level gifted classes. She wasn’t ready to be ripped apart from her friends. She wasn't even ready to leave her homophobic ex-bestfriend. Just like she wasn’t ready to pack her trunk, and decide what to bright to Hogwarts, and what to moarn that she couldn't bring with her. Like her lovely ball gowns, for example. She didn't think she'd need them to attend a mafical school. For this entire experience she truthfully was not ready at all.
“I h-hope to be” Kaitlyn responded with a light flush on her cheeks. ‘I just hope these girls want to be friends with me, they both seem very nice … I’ve been stuttering the entire time I’ve been with them. I hope they don’t mind ... I wonder if either of them grew up with magic,’ she thought. She nodded to Seraphina’s statement. It made sense to her. “I w-wonder w-what the work’s like here?” She questioned, as she followed Seraphina on the train.
