Transfiguration Class
Thoughts Speech/Professor Wade Speaking

Sarah walked into transfiguration class. She was so excited. Transfiguration was one of her top three classes she was most excited for. (The other two top three classes were Charms and Flying) She loved the idea of changing objects into different objects, or changing herself into a different creature! Which is why she was disappointed when she learned that transfiguration on people doesn't happen until later years.
The first thing Sarah noticed when she walked into the classroom was the rows of empty desks.
I must be early I guess.
Sarah sat down at an empty desk and watched as all the other students slowly streamed into the classroom. She watched everyone until another girl sat down next to Sarah. A Gryffindor girl by the looks of her uniform. She was a tall, pale girl with long brown hair that was tied back.
Sarah, as the extrovert she is, decided to talk first.
Hey! My name is Sarah. What's yours?
But the girl couldn't answer since the professor started talking. He welcomed all the students and told them his name was Professor Wade. He began to teach about what Transfiguration was, and showed a picture of something on the board.
Does anybody know what this is? Just shout it out if you know it
Sarah's hand shot up in the air.
An atom.
Yessiree!
Sarah was glad that she got the answer right. She turned to the girl sitting next to her who was looking at back at Sarah. Sarah looked back at the board and listened until the professor asked another question.
There are four schools of transfiguration. You just saw me demonstrate Vanishment and...
Sarah's hand shot up in the air again.
Unvanishing!
The rest of the class continued with Sarah answering. Sarah was excited. She had never been the teacher's star student, but maybe things are about to change.

Transfiguration Class
Becca walked into the Transfiguration classroom and looked around for an empty seat. She did not know many people in the school, so she had not made any friends for classes yet. She eventually decided to sit next to a small girl in a Hufflepuff uniform. The girl introduced herself after Becca sat down.
Hey! My name is Sarah. What’s yours?
Before Becca had a chance to say anything back, the professor started talking. Becca sat through the whole lesson and listened intently. She was amazed that Sarah knew all the answers to the questions the professor asked.
Becca had always loved to read, so when she bought her textbooks from Flourish and Blotts, she had read the first few chapters of each of the books a couple of times. Despite that, Transfiguration was still a hard subject for her to understand.
She had hoped the subject would be easier to understand with a professor teaching, but she was wrong. Becca could not get her brain on board with thinking of manipulating atoms using magic. How did that even begin to work? She could already see why Transfiguration was considered one of the hardest forms of magic.
Becca felt dazed as the lesson ended and copied her homework down. She looked over to the girl next to her and smiled a little. She seemed to know a lot more about the subject than Becca, so she might be able to help her get the subject straight.
Wow, Sarah, you knew a lot about Transfiguration! I’m so impressed by how well you seemed to grasp the whole thing. Did you study science a lot before Hogwarts? It was not my favorite subject, so I kind of felt lost during the whole lecture about atoms. How do you keep the idea of manipulating atoms straight in your head? I am having a hard time wrapping my head around it.
Becca spoke fast as she talked to the other girl. It was only after she finished talking that she realized she might have talked too much without a break. She also did not tell the other girl her name. Becca’s face flushed a little and she said the next sentence in a quieter and slower manner. She smiled again, this time a little uneasy.

Sarah was very proud of herself. She was answering all the questions in Transfiguration class, correctly! All that reading about transfiguration was paying off. Every now and then Sarah would glance at the girl sitting next to her. Sarah felt a little guilty that she never got her name. The girl was very focused on the lesson. Sarah couldn't tell if she was struggling, or just very focused but her question was answered when the girl spoke to Sarah.
Wow, Sarah, you knew a lot about Transfiguration! I’m so impressed by how well you seemed to grasp the whole thing. Did you study science a lot before Hogwarts? It was not my favorite subject, so I kind of felt lost during the whole lecture about atoms. How do you keep the idea of manipulating atoms straight in your head? Sarah immediately took a liking for this girl. She seemed happy to ask questions and speak her mind.
Yes actually! I've always loved to read and learn about this kind of thing, but ever since I got my Hogwarts acceptance letter, I've been studying a whole lot more. I'm sorry this isn't your favorite subject. I mean, they can't all be! I personally am not a fan of Defense against the Dark Arts.
Sarah took a breath and kept talking.
Um... Well it took a while to understand the atoms part of it all, but I can help you! Basically the atom makes up everything in the world. It's very small so you can't see it. It has protons and neutrons and a shell.
Sarah wondered if Becca was confused.
Don't worry. When I first read about atoms I was so confused too. But basically when we do transfiguration, we can manipulate the atoms; cause them to change, vanish, appear, etcetera. Does this all make sense? Sorry I'm not a very good teacher.
Sarah sat tense in her seat hoping that she was making sense.

Transfiguration Class
Becca smiled as Sarah said she loved to read. She was glad to talk to anybody who loved to read and learn. Then the girl said she did not like Defense Against the Dark Arts and Becca nodded thoughtfully. She briefly wondered what it was the girl did not like about Defense Against the Dark Arts but thought it might be too personal of a question to ask somebody she does not know.
She listened to the Hufflepuff girl as she explained more about atoms, and the pieces of the puzzle were finally starting to fit together in her mind. It was still a lot to process, but so was a lot of the wizarding world. It was amazing to Becca that magic and science could intersect with each other in such a way that wizards could manipulate the items in their surroundings. Becca’s head filled with questions, but she did not know how to ask them.
I think I am starting to understand it better, thanks! It’s still amazing to me, though, that magic can manipulate the atoms. I wonder how magic can manipulate something so small. I wonder if I will ever be able to wrap my head completely around it. I also wonder how they know. Do you think there are wizard scientists?
Becca frowned a little trying to concentrate on one of the millions of ideas bouncing around in her brain. Suddenly Becca latched onto a thought and got very excited as the possibilities jumped through her brain.
Do you think there’s a spell that can look at atoms? Could we watch them change as something is transformed? How cool would that be!
Becca started to imagine what it would look like, but realized she had no clue what it would be like. She barely even knew what an atom looked like. She looked at Sarah, wondering what the girl was thinking.
