To The Skies Little Badger!

Howard did his best to keep his stride short as to not outpace his newfound friend. Merlin knows his long limbs could carry him quickly. It was hard though as he loved teaching people new to Quidditch all about the sport. Especially when they seemed to be as excited about it as he was. He would fill the moments with idle chit chat as they both made their way out to the practice pitch for Nellie’s very first lesson. Howard was captain of team Hufflepuff, but it had been a while since he had introduced someone to the sport. Most witches and wizards came with a wealth of knowledge, so he hoped he could explain it well.
Soon enough the pair would make it onto the pitch. “Hold tight!” Howard asked before he ran off to a nearby storage shed and began to return with a chest and two brooms. Before Nellie knew it he would plop it down in front of her and with a bit of a kick the top would pop open. “I give you…Quidditch!” His clawed hand waved over the top of the now opened chest. Inside she would see four balls packed snuggly away, two of which were strapped down for good reason. “Let me show you the balls we use. This little one here is the maybe the most important one. The Snitch!” His pointed finger would draw her attention to a small, golden orb adorned with two wings. They slowly flapped back and forth as it rested. “Now, each team has one Seeker and it their job to try and catch this little bugger. What do you say? Think you could spot this thing while flying around?” He paused there, trying not to overwhelm her with too much at once.

Walking alongside excited tall upperclassmen boys was hard. Nellie’s legs were quite short, like the rest of her. Even for an eleven year old, she was shorter than most other’s her age. It was a curse. Well, not in the literal sense, but neither of her parents had been particularly blessed in that department. The girl held a healthy amount of respect for the captain of any sport or team that would invest the time in teaching a new player. But her enthusiasm was not enough to propel her any quicker ahead. As it was, she was having to work to keep up.
At his bidding, she stopped moving, rather abruptly at that. Tall people could always stop quicker, it seemed. Maybe it had to do with his long legs. There was probably some math that showed it somewhere, but that was not something she wanted to figure out. Numbers. Ew. Her brows rose when she spied the chest and brooms. It hit the ground before her with a muffled thud. Her chocolate colored hues moved from the trunk to the boy, a skeptical but curious glint within.
The snitch was small. Stepping forward, she leaned in to get a better look. “It’s so small.” She looked from the snitch, up to the boy presenting them, straightening once more. “I… could maybe try? I feel like that’s going to be really difficult. For anyone, really. But… I suppose that’s the point.” She pointed to the snitch still in its place within the chest. “Why is that one the most important?”

Howard couldn’t help but to smile as he spied that curious shine on Nellie’s eyes. He too must have had that look when he first was introduced to the game. Merlin it seemed like yesterday and an age ago all at once! The memories came flooding back in. How shaky he had been on that school broom that was loaned to him and all of the others seemed to move so fast! He tried out for goal tender thinking it would require less skill, but goodness he was mistaken. It seemed weird now to think he had starter as a Keeper as he had now been playing Chaser for so long. He blinked the thought away and refocused on the task at hand. There was a newcomer to the great game of Quidditch and he would do his best to give it a proper introduction.
“Yup! I don’t know how anyone sees this thing flying around, but hey, that’s why I’m a Chaser and not a Seeker. But some got the eye for it. Just make sure you don’t lose those glasses.” Howard teased a bit with a big smile. “It is meant to be difficult, you’re not wrong there. The Snitch is that important because it’s worth one hundred and fifty points, but not only that, once this thing is caught the match is over!” Howard would have to explain in more detail, but he watched closely to see if Nellie’s interested peaked any further. Seeker was a tough position and required a ton of focus. Not to mention a load of pressure as well. It was often too much for some, but maybe she had the spirit for it.
If she gave any inclination that she was interested, Howard would take off on an idea that had just come to him. “Want to try a drill?” His long arm would plunge into the chest in search for one of his go to practices. A moment later his arm would return with a golf ball in hand. Almost the same size as a Snitch. “What I can do is launch this high up and across the pitch. You could hop on the broom and give chase. See if you can keep your eye on it and catch it before it hits the ground. What do you say?” Howard offered. If she didn’t want to they could just carry on with the explanation of the other balls and positions.

Could Nellie see herself seeking? She imagined flying around, hunting the snitch and possibly clinching the win. It was an attractive thought, that was for sure. Yet, she couldn’t help but think that maybe her vision might be a hindrance to the whole spotting a tiny flying ball thing. As she stood there, considering Howard’s offer, she pushed her glasses up onto her face, struck by a sudden self consciousness. Still, though, Nellie had never been one to back down from a challenge and this time was no different. Her nod was slightly hesitant, but determined nonetheless. She was already grabbing for the broom with her right hand. “No reason to not try, right? Maybe I’m a natural.” Despite her nerves, she grinned at the older boy as she hopped onto her broom.
While she waited for him to throw the ball, she rose a bit into the air, just high enough so that her feet no longer touched the ground. Leaning into the broom, she lifted her feet, readying herself to fly as fast as the broom would carry her. Hopefully she’d manage to stay on the thing. Once in position, she pushed her glasses up her nose again for good measure. “Alright. I’m ready. Let’s see what I can do.”
